Seven police officers in San Antonio, Texas, were shot after responding to a call about a “suicide in progress” on Wednesday night.
Police were contacted by a family member of the suspect, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/man-shoots-police-officers-called-suicide-progress-san-antoni-rcna188902" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, who has since been identified as 46-year-old Brandon Scott Poulos. When the first officers arrived at the apartment complex, a woman said there was a man inside who was shooting, WOAI <a href="https://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/four-san-antonio-police-officers-shot-in-stone-oak-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Poulos then reportedly walked out of the apartment and began shooting, hitting one officer in the leg. The suicidal man then shot six more officers while barricaded inside the property, NBC reported. The seven wounded officers sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect died during the encounter, but it is unclear whether he shot himself or was shot by police, the San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) told NBC.
During the encounter, police evacuated residents from the apartment building, and resident Joseph Loredo told WOAI that he first heard a pop before hearing other noises and recognizing them as gunfire. He ran from his apartment and found an officer on the ground.
“When I went outside, I saw one of SAPD officers had been shot,&#8221; Loredo told the outlet. &#8220;It looked like a leg wound because they were putting a tourniquet on him and then they dragged him away.”
&#8220;I caught on video when [police] was actually firing back,&#8221; Loredo added. &#8220;Then I saw the [shooter] actually shoot a few of the officers. I witnessed this. That is when SAPD actually returned fire.&#8221;
Loredo also told the outlet that he saw Bexar County Sheriff’s deputies arrive on the scene followed by the SWAT team, who surrounded the area once the suspect barricaded himself in the first-floor apartment.

Around 2:45 a.m., after an hours-long standoff and negotiations, SWAT entered the apartment to find Poulos dead from a gunshot wound.
&#8220;SWAT arrived on the scene and the suspect barricaded himself inside the apartment for several hours,&#8221; Police Chief William McManus said in a Facebook post. &#8220;At the end of the event the suspect was found to be deceased, we don&#8217;t know if he was shot by a self-inflicted wound or whether or not he was shot by squad officers.&#8221;
McManus also said that Poulos had been arrested on January 18 for violating a protection order, three assault charges, and driving while intoxicated. He was out on bond when the shooting occurred.
All of the injured officers are expected to make a full recovery.

Members of the Tren de Aragua gang – the same group that has <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/management-of-apartments-hijacked-by-venezuelan-gang-says-company-scapegoated-by-local-officials" target="_blank" rel="noopener">taken over apartment buildings</a> in Colorado – were arrested in San Antonio, Texas, earlier this month.
A weeks-long joint operation at the beginning of the month saw 20 people arrested from an apartment complex in San Antonio, My San Antonio <a href="https://www.mysanantonio.com/news/local/article/tren-de-aragua-tda-san-antonio-19817730.php">reported</a>. Four of the people arrested were members of Tren de Aragua, known for violent illegal activities, including murder, drugs, and human trafficking.
San Antonio Police Chief Bill McManus said earlier this month that one of those arrested was “an enforcer” in the gang. He also said the bust was just the first, hinting that more arrests were to come. McManus noted that police had received multiple complaints from residents at an apartment complex, alleging drugs were being sold, people were being trafficked, and apartment employees were being threatened.
&#8220;We’re on to you, we’re coming for you, and we know where you are,&#8221; McManus said at a press conference, according to My San Antonio.
The outlet also reported that two members of the gang were arrested during a traffic stop the previous week, and that the police had shared a map showing suspected and documented gang activity.

Last month, Gov. Greg Abbott (R-TX) declared Tren de Aragua to be a “foreign terrorist organization” following reports that more than 100 members of the gang had violently forced their way across the U.S. southern border, The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-governor-declares-venezuelan-gang-terrorists-after-over-100-suspected-members-stormed-border" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> at the time.
“The recent entry and expansion of the vicious Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, is a dangerous and deadly problem facing our state and nation,” Abbott said.
“Our goal is to defend Texas from the growing threat of the gang. We will not let them use Texas as a base of operations to terrorize our citizens. They have a target on their back, and we are going after them. Texas is the wrong state for them to try to do business in,” the governor added.
The Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/texas/article-13958241/texas-gang-tren-aragua-apartment-complex-raid.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that the Tren de Aragua gang has taken over four apartment complexes in San Antonio. The Mail, citing law enforcement sources and residents of the complexes, said the situation has been going on for five or six months. The gangs have reportedly squatted in empty apartments and used them to deal drugs or traffic women and children for sex.
The San Antonio Police Department would not verify the claims made in the Mail article to The Daily Wire but did not deny them either.

Members Of Violent Venezuelan Gang Arrested In Texas, Apartment Complexes Under Siege: Report

A Texas police officer was shot multiple times on Sunday during a shootout with a 25-year-old Venezuelan national who entered the U.S. illegally and had been released by Border Patrol, Fox News <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/illegal-migrant-shoots-texas-police-officer-rifle-after-domestic-violence-call-sources-say" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
The shootout began after officers from the San Antonio Police Department responded to a domestic violence call around 3 a.m. and ended with the suspect, Jorge Chacon-Gutierrez, dead, and an officer wounded. The officer is expected to survive after undergoing surgery on Sunday.
It was unclear if the suspect was killed by return fire from police or if he committed suicide, according to Fox News. Chacon-Gutierrez illegally entered the U.S. in November 2023 and was apprehended by Border Patrol in Eagle Pass, Texas, according to law enforcement officials. He was then released into the country with a court date set for April 2026.
SAPD Chief William McManus said, “When officers arrived, they learned that a female victim had been assaulted by her boyfriend. The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/san-antonio" target="_blank" rel="noopener">San Antonio International Airport</a> worker who was “ingested” by the engine of a Delta Air Lines jet last week died by suicide, <a href="https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/texas-news/texas-airport-worker-who-was-pulled-into-a-jet-engine-died-by-suicide-medical-examiner-says/3284834/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Bexar County Medical Examiner.
The ground worker, who has been identified as 27-year-old David Renner, was killed late Friday night by an Airbus A319 aircraft arriving from Los Angeles. According to a Monday report from the medical examiner, an autopsy on Renner found he was killed from blunt and sharp-force injuries, with the manner of death listed as suicide.
“This isn’t the first time David has tried something like this from my knowledge,” David’s brother, Joshua, <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-12236345/PICTURED-Airport-worker-27-killed-jumping-engine-taxiing-Delta-jet.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> the Daily Mail. “There were other times. This time I thought it was different.”
On Friday, emergency crews responded after Renner was &#8220;ingested&#8221; into the jet’s engine as the plane was taxiing to its gate, the National Transportation Safety Board said. The plane had one engine on when the incident occurred, and a source <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2023/jun/26/texas-airport-worker-jet-engine-suicide" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> The Guardian that Renner “intentionally stepped in front of the live engine.”
In an interview with the Daily Mail, Joshua Renner said that while his brother had struggled with mental health in the past, he had shown no signs recently of a desire to inflict harm on himself.
“The reason I say that is because he was almost five months clean and living every day to the fullest,” Joshua said. “David had been clean for over eight months, was in therapy, [was] actively taking his prescribed medication and had finally became the David we all knew he could be,” Joshua added.
Renner was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-airport-worker-killed-after-being-ingested-into-jet-engine" target="_blank" rel="noopener">employed</a> by Unifi Aviation, a ground handling and aviation services company based out of Atlanta and contracted by Delta. Unifi said it was “deeply saddened by the loss of our employee” in the “tragic” incident.
“We are heartbroken and grieving the loss of an aviation family member’s life in San Antonio. Our hearts and full support are with their family, friends and loved ones during this difficult time,” Delta said in a <a href="https://people.com/texas-airport-worker-ingested-engine-died-suicide-medical-examiner-7553767#:~:text=The%20Bexar%20County%20Medical%20Examiner's,%2C%2027%2C%20reported%20the%20AP." target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>.

As a result of the death, counselors are available to airport employees, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/death-texas-airport-worker-was-ingested-airplane-engine-ruled-suicide-rcna91246" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to NBC News. Shortly after the incident on Friday, Unifi said the death was no fault of their policies or operations. Initially, the NTSB was working with Delta to investigate the incident, but that investigation has been canceled in light of the medical examiner’s determination.
&#8220;The NTSB will not be opening an investigation into this event. There were no operational safety issues with either the airplane or the airport,&#8221; an NTSB statement said.

A Texas airport worker was killed after being “ingested” into the engine of a Delta Air Lines jet, airport officials confirmed. 
Emergency crews responded at San Antonio International Airport on Friday night after a ground crew member was sucked into the aircraft&#8217;s engine, which had just arrived from Los Angeles. The plane was reportedly taxying to its gate when the incident occurred, according to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
&#8220;An accident occurred on the ground at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) tonight that resulted in the fatality of an airline ground crew member,” the airport said in a <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/06/25/san-antonio-airport-worker-killed-after-being-sucked-into-delta-jet-engine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>. “We are deeply saddened by this incident and are working with authorities as they begin their investigation. We will share more information as details become available.&#8221;
The victim, who hasn&#8217;t been identified, was employed by Unifi Aviation, a ground handling and aviation services company based out of Atlanta and contracted by Delta. The company said it was &#8220;deeply saddened by the loss of our employee” in the “tragic” accident. 
&#8220;Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, and we remain focused on supporting our employees on the ground and ensuring they are being taken care of during this time,” Unifi added. 
NTSB officials confirmed on Saturday that the worker was “ingested” into the jet engine and said they were in contact with Delta investigating the accident. Unifi Aviation says the death was no fault of their policies or operations. 
“From our initial investigation, this incident was unrelated to Unifi’s operational processes, safety procedures and policies,” the company said. “Out of respect for the deceased, we will not be sharing any additional information. While police and other officials continue to investigate this incident, we defer to them on providing further details.&#8221;

In the aftermath of the deadliest migrant smuggling event on the U.S.-Mexico border in American history that took the lives of 53 Mexican and Central American citizens in San Antonio, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/texas">Texas</a>, on Monday, the driver of the semi-truck could face life in prison or the death penalty if convicted.
&#8220;This is a horror that surpasses anything we&#8217;ve experienced before,&#8221; San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg said, according to <a href="https://apnews.com/article/politics-mexico-san-antonio-12d7431c008ea0123dfa9c271a27a3ca">the Associated Press</a>. &#8220;And it&#8217;s sadly a preventable tragedy.&#8221;
Authorities said Homero Zamorano Jr. transported 64 illegal immigrants across the southern border and allegedly was &#8220;very high on meth,&#8221; the Daily Mail <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10963683/San-Antonio-migrant-deaths-lead-slow-effort-ID-victims.html?ito=social-twitter_dailymailus">reported</a>. Authorities said Zamorano hid in nearby bushes after attempting to escape.
Zamorano, originally from Brownsville, Texas, lives in Pasadena, Texas, a Houston suburb, authorities said. Six months before the tragedy earlier this week in San Antonio, Zamorano and his now-estranged wife, Jennifer Duncan, separated, the New York Post reported.
&#8220;I&#8217;m in shock,&#8221; Duncan told the <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/06/29/estranged-wife-of-texas-migrant-truck-driver-homero-zamorano-says-he-is-a-good-man/">New York Post</a>. &#8220;I mean, I just don&#8217;t even know what to say about it. I know he wouldn&#8217;t do anything if he knew it was gonna harm anybody.&#8221;
Duncan called Zamorano &#8220;a good man&#8221; who &#8220;goes out of his way to help anybody and everybody.&#8221;
<a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-wdtx/pr/53-fatalities-tractor-trailer-smuggling-incident-charges-filed-against-four">Authorities</a> charged three other men who were also found at the scene where a tractor-trailer truck first went through a Border Patrol checkpoint northeast of Laredo on Interstate 35 on Monday.
Authorities arrested Christian Martinez, 28, on Tuesday in Palestine, Texas, and charged him with one count of conspiracy to transport illegal aliens resulting in death. Court documents show through a search warrant on Martinez&#8217;s cell phone that he and Zamorano were in contact regarding the smuggling event. Martinez faces up to life in prison or could face the death penalty if convicted.
Also arrested in the smuggling event were Mexican citizens Juan Claudio D&#8217; Luna-Mendez, 23, and Juan Francisco D&#8217; Luna-Bilbao, 48, who allegedly entered the U.S. illegally and were charged by criminal complaint with one count of possession of a weapon by an illegal immigrant. If convicted, both defendants face up to 10 years in prison.
Homeland Security Investigations and the San Antonio Police Department responded to the human smuggling scene after receiving 911 calls from nearby citizens.
Police said they discovered multiple individuals inside the tractor-trailer and on the ground in nearby brush — many of whom were already dead or incapacitated.
Homeland Security authorities confirmed that 48 individuals at the scene were deceased, including 22 Mexicans, seven Guatemalans, two Hondurans, and 17 other illegal immigrants from an unknown origin.
According to the Associated Press, Rubén Minutti, Mexico&#8217;s consul general in San Antonio, said several survivors were in critical condition with injuries such as brain damage and internal bleeding.
Five illegal immigrants died at a nearby hospital after authorities transported 16 of the 64 illegal immigrants found in or around the semi-truck. With the temperature reaching nearly 100 degrees, some were dealing with heat-related illnesses.
The Associated Press reported San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said those taken to the hospital were hot to the touch and dehydrated without water found in the trailer.
&#8220;They were suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion,&#8221; Hood said. &#8220;It was a refrigerated tractor-trailer, but there was no visible working AC unit on that rig.&#8221;

&#8220;Exploiting vulnerable individuals for profit is shameful, as is political grandstanding around tragedy, and my administration will continue to do everything possible to stop human smugglers and traffickers from taking advantage of people who are seeking to enter the United States between ports of entry,&#8221; Biden said in a statement.
Craig Larrabee, acting special agent in charge of Homeland Security Investigations in San Antonio, said, according to the Associated Press, South Texas has long been the busiest area for illegal border crossings. He added that U.S. authorities discover trucks with migrants inside &#8220;pretty close&#8221; to daily.
Larrabee said illegal immigrants pay anywhere from $8,000 to $10,000 for transportation across the border. Then, after packing into a tractor-trailer and hitching a ride to San Antonio, he said the smugglers transfer them to smaller vehicles for their final destinations across the United States.

Three people have been taken into police custody after the bodies of at least 46 illegal immigrants were found smuggled in the back of a tractor-trailer in San Antonio, the deadliest smuggling incident in American history.

“Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard, citing information provided by U.S. authorities, said the death toll was at least 50, including 22 Mexican citizens, seven Guatemalan citizens and two Honduran citizens,” <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/46-people-found-dead-18-wheeler-san-antonio/story?id=85820560">ABC News</a> reported.
“Forty-eight people died on the scene, and two died at hospitals, the federal law enforcement official told CNN on Tuesday, noting the toll is preliminary,” <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/06/27/us/san-antonio-migrants-found-truck/index.html">CNN</a> stated, adding, “High temperatures Monday in the San Antonio area ranged from the high 90s to low 100s, <a href="https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?issuedby=EWX&amp;product=RTP&amp;site=ewx">according to</a> the National Weather Service.”
16 people in the truck, which was found near Interstate 95, survived and were taken for medical treatment. The deadliest human smuggling incident prior to Monday occurred on May 13, 2003, when 18 migrants died, <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2003/US/Southwest/05/15/truck.bodies/">according</a> to a CNN article from the time.
The dead bodies  “were hot to the touch,” San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood stated, adding, “There were no signs of water in the vehicle, and no visible working AC unit on that rig.”
“This is nothing short of a horrific human tragedy,” San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg echoed, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2022/06/27/migrants-dead-texas/">The Washington Post</a>, which noted, “The deaths come amid a surge in migration at the border, with the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/immigration/2022/06/16/united-states-border-immigration-arrests/?itid=lk_inline_manual_18">latest U.S. Customs and Border Protection</a> figures showing that immigration arrests there in May rose to the highest levels ever recorded. &#8230; The agency is on pace to surpass the record 1.73 million border arrests tallied in 2021.”
“The truck had U.S. and Texas Department of Transportation registration numbers on the cab,” The Post reported.
“Horrified at this tragic loss of life near San Antonio,” U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Chris Magnus stated in a <a href="https://twitter.com/CBPChrisMagnus/status/1541736131267596288">tweet</a> on Tuesday. “This speaks to the desperation of migrants who would put their lives in the hands of callous human smugglers who show no regard for human life.&#8221;
“As temperatures start to rise in the summer, human smugglers will continue to exploit vulnerable populations and recklessly endanger the lives of migrants for financial gain,” Magnus said prior to the incident. “The terrain along the Southwest border is extreme, the summer heat is severe, and the miles of desert that migrants must hike after crossing the border are unforgiving.”
“I hate to say this, but some of these kids are rented out by parents who can&#8217;t afford to pay the coyotes to the cartels,” Arizona GOP Rep. Andy Biggs <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/biggs-warns-migrant-deaths-border-summer-months-overrun-right-now">said</a>. “So they let their kids be used over and over again to create these false family units. All of that horrific inhumanity that goes on when you don&#8217;t secure your border.”

Two people were killed and five wounded when a gunman drove past a cookout outside a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/san-antonio">San Antonio</a> home and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/mass-shooting">sprayed bullets</a> at the gathering late Saturday, police <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/ny-san-antonio-barbecue-shooting-driveby-20220619-eo5575sginan5mrnmfgmbs4dia-story.html">said</a>.
The attack came around 10 p.m. in front of the home while children slept inside, according to San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus. The dead were not identified, but both were men, he said.
“The family was barbecuing out in front of the house,” McManus <a href="https://www.kwtx.com/2022/06/19/2-shot-7-injured-family-bbq-san-antonio/">said</a>. “For now, [we have] seven people shot out in front of the house barbecuing, a drive-by, multiple rounds fired, two dead, five injured.”

The two men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the <a href="https://www.expressnews.com/news/local/article/7-shot-2-killed-in-drive-by-shooting-on-17251828.php">San Antonio Express-News</a>.
The victims ranged in age from 20 to mid-40s, and two were women. None of the six children inside the home were hurt, authorities said. No arrests had been made, and police did not even have a description of the suspects, who McManus said fired up to 30 rounds at the victims.
McManus declined to speculate about a possible motive but noted there was a drive-by shooting at the same address last month.
“Back in May, there was a deadly conduct incident at this house, a drive-by, but other than that we don’t have any incidents at this house,” McManus told reporters at the scene early Sunday. “We have a couple of theories, but I am not going to go into that.”
Last week, in the nearby suburb of Castle Hills, two women were killed and a third injured in a drive-by shooting. D’Yani Amajanique Denise Thomas, 19, and Kennedi Eunece Braziel, 18, were with the third victim inside a car when they were shot multiple times on June 12.
“It’s a senseless, senseless act, a very violent act,” <a href="https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2022/06/13/these-suspects-have-no-regard-for-human-life-castle-hills-police-id-women-fatally-shot-in-car-near-north-star-mall/">said</a> Castle Hill Police Lt. Tony Crawford. “We’ve tried to canvass the area for any businesses that we believe that these victims and possible suspect cars have traveled.”
Investigators recovered more than 50 shell casings at the scene and said the killers used a 9-millimeter and an AK-47.
It was unclear if the shootings were related.

A Texas mother alone at her home with her three sleeping children took no prisoners when a man tried to enter her home late at night, <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/05/02/texas-mom-guns-down-home-intruder-while-her-kids-are-asleep/">shooting and killing</a> him.
The San Antonio woman will likely not face charges because of Texas’ Castle Doctrine law, which permits a homeowner to use force against an intruder who unlawfully enters their home.
According to local police, the woman heard Roman Rodriguez, 41, enter through her laundry room in the rear of her home, <a href="https://news4sanantonio.com/news/local/homeowner-shoots-kills-intruder-caught-breaking-into-her-home">News 4 San Antonio reported</a>.
Grabbing a gun, the woman fired twice, hitting Rodriguez in the chest, <a href="https://www.ksat.com/news/local/2022/05/01/man-fatally-shot-by-woman-during-home-invasion-on-southeast-side-identified/">according to KSAT</a>.  Police found Rodriguez sitting in the backyard of the woman’s home, seated on a chair with his chest bleeding. According to the Bexar County Medical Examiner, he died from gunshot wounds on his way to the hospital.
Spectrum News <a href="https://spectrumlocalnews.com/tx/south-texas-el-paso/news/2020/12/10/gov--greg-abbott-rebuffs-proposed-change-to-texas--castle-doctrine-">explained</a>, “Texas law permits someone to claim self-defense at trial when deadly force was used in the following circumstances”:

<li>Reasonably believed the deadly force was immediately necessary;</li>
<li>Had a legal right to be on the property;</li>
<li>Did not provoke the person against whom deadly force was used; and</li>
<li>Was not engaged in criminal activity at the time the deadly force was used.</li>
</ul>
In December 2020, Texas GOP governor Greg Abbott decisively stated that the state would not reduce the Castle Doctrine law after a Texas Democrat introduced a bill that would “require a homeowner to exhaust the potential of safely retreating into their habitation before using deadly force in defense of themselves or their property.”

Abbott tweeted, “Let me be clear. The Castle Doctrine will not be reduced. We won’t force Texas homeowners to retreat. Especially with the crazy ‘defund police’ ideas, homeowners need to protect themselves now more than ever. We will protect 2nd Amendment rights.”

But there are still markets you can break into that won’t break the bank. Whether you want to move to a more affordable city or you’re looking to buy an investment property, we found the best places for you to start your search. 
Where to Buy for the Best Cost of Living
First things first: To find places with the cheapest cost of living, we looked at the Cost of Living <a href="https://www.coli.org/products/">Index</a> published by the Council for Community and Economic Research (C2ER). This index compares expenses like housing, groceries, utilities, transportation, health care, and miscellaneous goods and services in every state. Sound good? Here we go. 
1. Brandon, Mississippi
Mississippi is the cheapest state to live in in the United States. Its cost of living is 16.7% lower than the national average, and median housing prices sit at just $244,500—way lower than the national median of $404,950. Brandon, an up-and-coming city just east of the state capital, is catching the eye of those looking to move because of its job growth and new infrastructure.
2. Calhoun County, Alabama
Alabama is the state with the third-lowest cost of living—about 12.1% cheaper than other states on average. Even the most expensive city in the state, Birmingham, is still 6% below average. But the most affordable place to move to in good ol’ Alabama is Calhoun County—18% under the national cost of living average. 
3. Muskogee, Oklahoma
Out west, Oklahoma ties with Alabama for an average cost of living that’s 12.1% lower than the national average. Oklahoma’s cheapest city is Muskogee. Move there, and you can enjoy a cost of living that’s a whopping 21% below average!
4. Knoxville, Tennessee
Cost of living in Tennessee is 11.3% below average. Nashville is the most expensive place to live in the state, but it still costs 5% less than the average U.S. city. However, if you’re looking to buy, head over to Knoxville, where the cost of living is about 20% lower than average.
5. Kalamazoo, Michigan
On our list, Michigan has the cheapest groceries (shout-out to Meijer) and the cheapest city to live in—Kalamazoo. In Kalamazoo, the cost of living is 24% below normal. I mean, take a (Michi)gander at that number. And with that, I’ve hit my dad joke quota for the day.
6. Morgantown, West Virginia
West Virginia’s cost of living index looks at one city—Morgantown. The cost of living In Morgantown is 9.5% below average, and it has the cheapest utilities and lowest median housing prices on the list. 
7. Richmond, Indiana
Indiana’s cost of living is 9.4% less than the U.S. average. But in the fine city of Richmond, that number drops to 18% below average. However, head over to Bloomington—home to Indiana University, a top 100 school—and residents pay about 2% above average. Sheesh. 
Where to Buy to Invest
Now that we’ve looked at where you’ll want to consider buying if you’re looking to move somewhere cheaper, let’s show some love to all you real estate investing hopefuls out there. To find the cities where you should consider buying real estate, we checked out what the <a href="https://www.nar.realtor/">National Association of Realtors®</a> (NAR) had to say about undervalued markets. 
Yeah, I know an “undervalued market” doesn’t sound like a hot spot, but here’s how the NAR defines it: A market is undervalued if the median home price to median family income ratio is lower among a distribution of metro areas. This distribution is determined by factors that drive supply and demand—things like job growth, population growth, the percentage of houses with Wi-Fi, the percentage of people between ages 25 and 44, and more. These factors basically imply that a market should see strong price appreciation (aka a big increase in prices) in 2022—making it a prime place to invest.
So, according to the “<a href="https://cdn.nar.realtor/sites/default/files/documents/2022-housing-market-hidden-gems-12-17-2021.pdf">2022 Housing Market Hidden Gems</a>” study by the NAR, here are seven markets to invest in thanks to price appreciation. (Interesting note: These markets are almost all in south—ain’t that something?) 
1. Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas
Dallas-Fort Worth’s home value-to-income ratio is lower compared to the rest of the country. Among top undervalued markets, DFW (as the locals call it) has the largest percentage of the population between ages 25 and 44, a main indicator for future price appreciation.  
2. Huntsville, Alabama
Huntsville is becoming one of the most sought-after places to live in the south. I know, I’m as shocked as you are. Strong job growth, population growth and good infrastructure should boost housing demand and home prices in 2022.
3. Fayetteville, Arkansas
Compared to other undervalued cities, the Fayetteville metro area saw the second-highest population growth at 6.3% from 2017 to 2020 (tied with Spartanburg, South Carolina, which I mention later). Home prices and average weekly wages also grew about 20%—meaning home demand and home prices are likely to grow too. As the Razorbacks fans (especially my wife, a former Razorback) say, Woo pig! 
4. Melbourne, Florida
The Melbourne area population is somewhat older (looking at you, snowbirds), and in this case, that’s a good sign. Incoming retirees are expected to increase the housing demand and home prices this year. 
5. San Antonio, Texas
San Antonio’s median home value of $227,684 is the second-lowest among undervalued markets—and it’s cheaper than other Texas metros like Dallas, Houston and Austin (which has an average of over $400,000!). 
6. Spartanburg, South Carolina
Right in between Charlotte and Greenville is this hidden gem. Spartanburg’s estimated median home value in 2021 was $181,571 (which looks a lot more like home prices circa 1998). Jobs and population have also seen growth in recent years, giving Spartanburg a bright future. 
7. Tucson, Arizona
Due to strong population growth and domestic migration, home prices in Tucson rose 23.6% between 2018 and 2021, surpassing wage increases, which were at 15.6%. I mean, talk about equity! The Beatles once sang about Jo Jo leaving his home in Tucson, Arizona, but he might want to reconsider in a market like this one.
Should You Buy Real Estate in 2022?
I’m going to give you a resounding maybe. Really, the answer depends on your situation—especially since every city has pros and cons.
The truth is, buying real estate only based on the cost of living or based on what home values are doing in a given area is a bad idea. You’ve got to consider things like whether you can earn a good living in the city, whether you’ll even like it, whether you’re financially at a place where buying a home makes sense, and whether it makes sense for you to take a financial risk at this point in your life. 
After you consider those factors, you’ll have a clearer idea about where and if you should buy. But my best piece of advice? Children at an elementary school in San Antonio, Texas, were reportedly segregated by hair color and shown a Spike Lee film that included graphic autopsy photos.
<a href="https://news4sanantonio.com/news/trouble-shooters/parents-angered-by-segregation-experiment-at-local-elementary-school">News 4 San Antonio</a> spoke to parents who reportedly “say they want their children to learn about racism and civil rights,” but believe that Northside Independent School District “went too far with the segregation experiment and by making children watch a documentary it admits was not age appropriate.” 
The outlet interviewed Mike and Brandi Lininger — parents whose 10-year-old daughter was “was confused and hurt by a classroom experiment in January at Leon Springs Elementary,” according to the report.
“All of the dark-haired kids, the brown- and black-haired kids, were treated as the privileged ones and the blonde-haired and the redhead kids were the ones treated not so nicely,&#8221; Brandi Lininger explained. The couple said teachers told students children in the fair-haired group were less intelligent. The group was intentionally given a game with pieces missing so they could not play and were later forced to clean up after their classmates.
“She was hurt, her friends, and she named to the principal and to district officials, names of her friends that were crying,&#8221; Brandi Lininger continued.
Meanwhile, teachers played a Spike Lee documentary called “4 Little Girls” — which depicts the 1963 bombing of an Alabama church — to fifth graders. The movie contains autopsy photos of the girls’ bodies. Although the teacher claims she skipped the more graphic portions of the documentary, Mike Lininger said that his daughter was indeed exposed to the images: “The things that she said that she skipped over, my daughter was able to describe to us to a ‘T.’ So that night our daughter was unable to go to sleep in our own room; she was scared.”
The school denied News 4 San Antonio’s request for an interview, but confirmed that “the activity and video in question were part of a larger fifth-grade project-based lesson around the inequity of segregation&#8221; — adding that although “the campus did receive positive feedback from several parents,” administrators “recognize the parent’s concerns and agree that the activity and video are not age-appropriate and will not be used again.”
“They send us notes and newsletters about everything else. Your child is going to see The Polar Express and it&#8217;s pajama day on Friday before winter break, and we get no notice that they&#8217;re going to do a social experiment on segregation,&#8221; Brandi Lininger noted to the outlet.
News 4 San Antonio confirmed the Lininger family’s account with another Leon Springs parent, who did not wish to be identified.
The rising popularity of left-wing instruction in public schools — especially Critical Race Theory (CRT) — have motivated many parents to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/south-carolina-lawmakers-introduce-1000-homeschool-tax-credit-bill">seek</a> new educational opportunities for their children. The Texas Department of State Health Services has seen to it that some 3,600 &#8220;probable&#8221; coronavirus cases have been removed from the state&#8217;s total positive COVID case count.
Before Thursday, the San Antonio Health Department was counting positive antigen tests in their total reported counts of positive COVID cases. The antigen tests are considered &#8220;probable,&#8221; unlike the more sensitive molecular PCR tests.
&#8220;Antigen tests quickly identify people who are currently infected with the coronavirus by detecting proteins from the virus in nose and throat secretions,&#8221; says the San Antonio <a href="https://www.sanantonio.gov/gpa/News/ArtMID/24373/ArticleID/19185/San-Antonio-Metro-Health-separates-“confirmed”-COVID-19-cases-from-“probable”-cases-at-the-request-of-the-state">Department of Government and Public Affairs</a> website. &#8220;This is the same technology used in your doctor&#8217;s office for rapid strep testing. By contrast, a PCR test, looks for genetic material.&#8221;
Since San Antonio is only one of three cities in the state to count and collect antigen tests, Texas&#8217; health department asked for the cases to be separated out from PCR tests so the state can have cleaner comparisons by city and county.
The initial news of the drastic downgrade in total positive cases sparked theories of general over-counting of COVID tests.

San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg responded in a thread about the antigen test removal, emphasizing that the city does not include &#8220;probable&#8221; cases of suspected COVID carriers, only those who test positive from the antigen test.
&nbsp;
&#8220;We do not report repeat positive tests as new cases,&#8221; he said. &#8220;We do not report spouses/household members of positive cases without a positive test. We do not report patients with COVID-like symptoms as positive cases without a positive test.&#8221;
&#8220;We&#8217;re 1 of 3 cities in Texas that counts and collects antigen tests based on their accuracy and FDA authorization. It allows us to see the full picture,&#8221; Nirenberg explained. &#8220;The State wants an apples-to-apples comparison with all cities in their reports, so they&#8217;re removing antigen counts.&#8221;

On Thursday, the San Antonio government website issued a clarification on the change.
&#8220;At the request of the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Metro Health is now separating COVID cases that were confirmed by a positive molecular test (PCR) from those that were detected by a positive antigen test combined with COVID-19 symptoms, otherwise known as &#8216;probable cases,'&#8221; the city&#8217;s <a href="https://www.sanantonio.gov/gpa/News/ArtMID/24373/ArticleID/19185/San-Antonio-Metro-Health-separates-“confirmed”-COVID-19-cases-from-“probable”-cases-at-the-request-of-the-state">website</a> says.
&#8220;<a href="https://www.fda.gov/news-events/press-announcements/coronavirus-covid-19-update-fda-authorizes-first-antigen-test-help-rapid-detection-virus-causes">Antigen tests were approved by the FDA</a> for emergency use on May 8 and July 2, 2020, and they are considered very accurate in detecting the presence of COVID-19 in people with symptoms,&#8221; the city said. &#8220;The CDC includes positive antigen test results in its <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-updates/cases-in-us.html">national count of COVID-19 cases</a>, as does Metro Health in Bexar County counts. However, the State of Texas does not include antigen test results in its COVID-19 dashboard counts, despite collecting this data from local health departments and reporting it to the federal government.&#8221;
Dr. Colleen Bridger said &#8220;probable cases&#8221; in this case &#8220;do not mean ‘maybe’ cases of COVID-19.&#8221;
“Antigen tests are FDA approved, and positive tests are highly accurate. San Antonio is one of only three Texas cities collecting and reporting this data per the CDC guidelines, but the State of Texas wants apples-to-apples comparisons between Texas cities,&#8221; she added.
