The UFC has surged in popularity in recent years, not just as the premier MMA organization in all of combat sports, but as a cultural force to be reckoned with. Unbridled athleticism and the ferocious skills of its fighters are the initial draw, but that&#8217;s only the beginning. The UFC&#8217;s unapologetic embrace of courage and patriotism resonates deeply with a growing fanbase, especially as other sports leagues, such as the NBA and NFL, fell prey to woke BS.
The sport celebrates physical and mental toughness above all else. Fans are drawn to the unfiltered intensity. Promos showcase blood, sweat, and stoicism as warriors stare down their opponents. The UFC resonates with Americans who have grown tired of cultural leftism disparaging manliness and dismissing traditional male virtues to exhaustion. 
The UFC isn’t afraid of honoring the United States of America and its military veterans, first responders, and values either. Even in a sport that has representation from countries across the globe, respect for the United States is paramount. Fighters often wrap themselves in their nation’s colors, and post-fight interviews are peppered with shout-outs to the troops or expressions of national pride. This overt patriotism strikes a chord with fans who see the UFC as a bastion of unapologetic love for country. 
President Donald Trump adds to this allure. During UFC 314, the president walked into the packed arena to the chants of “USA!” as he appeared on the big screen. Trump’s appearances at UFC fights are not just celebrity cameos — they’re symbolic endorsements of the UFC’s ethos. For many fans, seeing Trump in the octagon reinforces the UFC as an arena where their values are celebrated, not challenged.

President Donald Trump announced today he will personally fund the installation of two nearly 100-foot-tall American flags at the White House, declaring that the presidential residence has &#8220;needed flagpoles for 200 years.&#8221;
The President was spotted Wednesday morning with White House groundskeepers surveying the north side of the grounds, gesturing to demonstrate where the massive flagpoles would stand.
&#8220;We&#8217;re putting up a beautiful, almost 100-foot-tall American flag on this side and another one on the other side, two flags, top of the line,&#8221; Trump <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/23/us-news/trump-announces-self-funded-change-to-white-house/">told</a> reporters outside the White House, per the New York Post.
The two flags, to be positioned on the North and the South Lawns respectively, will significantly alter the White House&#8217;s exterior appearance, making the American flag more prominently visible from multiple vantage points around the presidential residence.
Currently, there is no freestanding flagpole on the White House property, with the only American flag flying from the top of the building itself.
&#8220;They needed flagpoles for 200 years. It was something I&#8217;ve often said, you know, they don&#8217;t have a flagpole per se,&#8221; Trump explained to reporters. &#8220;So we&#8217;re putting one right where you saw us, and we&#8217;re putting another one on the other side, on top of the mounds. It&#8217;s going to be two beautiful poles.&#8221;

Trump emphasized that the new additions would be &#8220;paid for by Trump,&#8221; noting the flags are scheduled to arrive next week.
The patriotic addition is part of several changes Trump has made since returning to office, the Post reports, including transforming the Oval Office with more portraits of past presidents and gold-accented decorations reminiscent of his Mar-a-Lago estate.
He has also announced plans to rebuild the Rose Garden with an artificial platform instead of grass to make it more practical for hosting events without dealing with soggy ground.
Trump previously proposed building a $100 million ballroom at the White House during the Biden administration, but apparently &#8220;never heard back.&#8221;
The President stated his intention to carry out the proposal himself to create more room for ceremonies without requiring massive, bulky tents.
The President recently <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/08/us-news/trump-uses-golden-shovel-to-plant-replacement-for-historic-jackson-magnolia/">participated</a> in planting a replacement for the historic Jackson Magnolia on the South Lawn, using a golden shovel to plant a 12-year-old sapling that is reportedly a descendant of the original tree, which was nearly 200 years old and had been deemed a safety hazard.
Previous presidents have similarly made changes to the executive residence, from Jackie Kennedy&#8217;s historic restoration efforts to the Obama family&#8217;s addition of a vegetable garden.

On the eve of April 10, 2025, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts underwent a patriotic transformation. 
Under the leadership of newly appointed President Richard Grenell, the iconic Washington, D.C., landmark made a bold and lasting statement: from now on, the building’s exterior lighting will shine every night with the vibrant and meaningful colors of red, white, and blue to honor the United States of America.
“The lights are a beautiful reminder of the American spirit,” Roma Daravi, Vice President of Public Relations at the Kennedy Center, told The Daily Wire. “The red, white, and blue colors are a powerful symbol of unity and our nation’s commitment to bringing people together. What better place for that than at the Kennedy Center, America’s institution for the Arts.”
Over the past several years, the Kennedy Center has taken on multiple different appearances.
The first big change happened in 2013 when the building was temporarily lit with colorful hues to celebrate a Nordic Festival’s “Northern Lights” exhibit. Then, in 2017, the Center started utilizing rainbow lighting annually during the Kennedy Center Honors. The Kennedy Center was lit yellow and blue in support of Ukraine back in 2022. It was also lit with purple and amber lights for the Women&#8217;s Suffrage Centennial back in August of 2020. 
Grenell choosing to light the building red, white, and blue every night going forward represents a permanent, year-round tribute to American values, his team explains. In contrast to landmarks like the Empire State Building, which rotates its lights for various causes, holidays, and marketing campaigns, the Kennedy Center will now be dedicated to displaying national pride.
The Kennedy Center has been in the news ever since President Trump took office and promised major reforms, including firing the entire board, as The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-dumps-kennedy-center-board-puts-immediate-end-to-drag-shows-for-kids">reported</a>.
“At my direction, we are going to make the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., GREAT AGAIN,” Trump wrote on social media in February. “Just last year, the Kennedy Center featured Drag Shows specifically targeting our youth — THIS WILL STOP.”
The changes the new board made led to full-scale meltdowns on the Left, including protests expressed through <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-protesters-plan-to-save-kennedy-center-with-interpretive-dance-yes-really">interpretive dancing</a>. But their protests haven’t made much of a difference. The Kennedy Center just <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/kennedy-center-breaks-all-time-attendance-record-after-lib-meltdown-over-trump">broke</a> its all-time attendance record for a public event it hosted on March 29, welcoming 11,000 attendees, of whom 76% were there for the first time.

In a new <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/appreciating-american-exceptionalism-mike-rowe-member-exclusive">“Sunday Special” interview</a>, Daily Wire Editor Emeritus Ben Shapiro spoke to television host Mike Rowe about blue-collar jobs and patriotism.
Rowe is famous for hosting the Discovery Channel show &#8220;Dirty Jobs&#8221; in the early 2000s. His new <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQ59RsDoPQE" target="_blank" rel="noopener">movie</a>, &#8220;Something to Stand For&#8221; pulls stories about American heroes and is hitting theaters at the end of June.
During their hour-long conversation, Shapiro asked Rowe what inspired him to make his patriotic movie.
&#8220;I&#8217;m real clear when I talk about it that I didn&#8217;t write it for Republicans or Democrats or liberals or conservatives. I wrote it for people who still see themselves first and foremost as Americans,&#8221; Rowe said.
Rowe lamented that &#8220;anti-Americanism&#8221; has &#8220;crept into the conversation.&#8221;
&#8220;It is unfortunate that there is a cohort today that fundamentally sees themselves as something else,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The movie&#8217;s not for them. They&#8217;re welcome to come.&#8221;
Rowe expressed that he was dismayed to see people dressing American statues up in Hamas garb and thought, &#8220;What are we doing?&#8221; In his movie, Rowe visits Washington, D.C. to appreciate the national monuments.
&#8220;I mean, to truly understand how amazing America is, you really do have to understand history and that there is an entire rest of the world out there, and the rest of the world has an enormous number of truly crappy places, places you would never want to live with awful values, with people who believe precisely the opposite of what we believe,&#8221; Shapiro responded.
Shapiro also asked Rowe about what he is hearing from blue-collar workers in the current economy, with sky-high inflation compared to before the pandemic.
Rowe emphasized that there is a distinction in the blue-collar world between blue-collar workers and entrepreneurs, who are &#8220;killing it&#8221; and have &#8220;more work than they can do.&#8221;
&#8220;The math goes like this,&#8221; Rowe said. &#8220;Every year five skilled tradespeople retire. For every five who retire, two replace them &#8230; It&#8217;s been like that for nearly 20 years. We&#8217;re seeing an incredible lack of interest and enthusiasm around these skilled trades.&#8221;
However, the entrepreneurs like small mechanical contracting companies with two or three vans and six workers are winning in this economy, Rowe said.
&#8220;It&#8217;s true. Inflation, super bad,&#8221; he said. &#8220;The cost of college, an enormous problem. The unintended consequences of forgiving student loans, all that stuff is part and parcel of the madness that&#8217;s happening right now.&#8221;
&#8220;But the entrepreneur, who took the time to master a skill that&#8217;s in demand is crushing it in this economy,&#8221; Rowe said.

Last July 4th seemed like the least patriotic birthday America has ever had. In many cities, parades were dismal or non-existent, fireworks were banned, and the American flag was hard to find. 
Once the world’s most powerful symbol of triumph, it has been torn down by Americans who believe it is instead a bigoted reminder of a hateful history. With the immense power that 2024 holds on the future of this national divide, it is imperative to remind each American citizen why the colors of our flag are still worth celebrating.
America has defined freedom for 248 years. She has fought against oppression and regulation, against tyranny and evil. She has defended the liberties of speech and religion, the gifts of open trade and innovation, the rights of life and innocence, and the ability to not only pursue happiness, but to define it for oneself. America has sent her own men to fight for not only the freedom of her citizens, but also for that of strangers.
Freedom is the American identity. It is the pride in this identity which wraps itself in another word: Patriotism. This spirit has endured every challenge of our nation’s lifetime. Patriotism fortifies delicate liberty. “A republic, if you can keep it;” her strength must be ceaselessly reinforced.
But patriotism, it seems, has gone out of style. In its place has emerged a form of tyranny disguised in a quintessentially American shade of blue. A record low number of Americans are proud to be American.
The so-called ‘fight for freedom’ has begun to rot its own definition.
The misuse of these words is changing our national identity. A fight for freedom is not a fight for rights, as the Left has decided to define it. Many aspects of the American life are freedoms, not rights. Education is a freedom, not a right. The ability to choose which doctor to go to is a freedom, not a right. When the government tries to make something a right, it steals whatever freedom it began with. Forcing businesses to hire people based on their skin color takes away the mechanisms which allow them to thrive and grow. No one has a right to be hired. Rather, everyone has the freedom to seek out employment and do whatever is so required to be a desirable employee. The excellence of America lies where these freedoms meet. The freedom to pursue excellence is what it means to be an American.
To risk true freedom in an effort to establish the rights of some is a step proven dangerous by history. French philosopher and judge Montesquieu declared that “the liberty of one citizen is of greater importance to the public than the ease or prosperity of another.”
If we preserve special treatment for some, we take it away from others. Montesquieu reminds us that the only true freedom comes from liberty. No one has a right to success or special privilege, but true freedom provides everyone with the chance to try. Patriotism has always been the glue of America, and it still comes in all three colors. Neither red, nor white, nor blue is more important than the others. Together, they preserve freedom. Divided, they cannot stand. Today, our flag is still flying. That is enough to invoke celebration and pride. Every casket it has ever draped demands as much.
America is the only country in the world to which people choose to move. They risk their lives and leave their families in a bid to buy into the world’s greatest pursuit of liberty. To live as an American is to live with the freedom to become anything. That is a freedom worth celebrating.
For all the talk about privilege in this country — white privilege, male privilege, hetero-privilege — let us not forget that being an American is the greatest privilege of all.

A significantly higher percentage of Republicans say they are &#8220;extremely proud&#8221; to be American compared to Democrats and independents, according to <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/646655/american-pride-remains-near-record-low.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survey</a> results released just two days before Independence Day.
The Gallup poll, which surveyed U.S. adults from June 3-23, shows that 59% of Republicans say they are &#8220;extremely proud&#8221; of their national identity, which remains near record-low numbers. Only 34% of Democrats and 36% of independents said the same, which is up slightly from last year for both demographics, according to Gallup.
The gap between Republicans and Democrats in expressing pride in America has closed in the past five years. Republicans&#8217; pride in their country has dropped from 76% to 59%, while Democrats&#8217; pride in America has risen from 22% in 2019 to 34% in 2024. The Gallup results show that that gap began to close toward the end of former President Donald Trump&#8217;s term in office and throughout President Joe Biden&#8217;s first term.

Gallup&#8217;s latest survey results show a stark contrast in how Republicans, Democrats, and independents felt about being American 20 years ago. In 2004, 82% of Republicans, 65% of independents, and 60% of Democrats said they were &#8220;extremely proud&#8221; to be American. Republicans have maintained a higher sense of pride in their national identity than Democrats and independents since the turn of the century.
&#8220;Americans’ national pride was highest after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001, when patriotism surged in the U.S.,&#8221; Gallup wrote. &#8220;Extreme pride has been trending downward since 2015.&#8221;
&#8220;While the percentage of U.S. adults who say they are extremely proud to be American is near the lowest point on record, about two-thirds continue to be at least very proud,&#8221; Gallup added. &#8220;Republicans’ national pride, though near its lowest point, remains high compared with Democrats’ and independents’, although all party groups are significantly less proud than they were 20 years ago.&#8221;
According to the survey, 18% of U.S. adults say they are &#8220;moderately proud&#8221; to be American, 10% say they are &#8220;only a little&#8221; proud, and 5% say they are &#8220;not at all&#8221; proud.
Another Gallup <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/646643/june-economic-confidence-stable-low.aspx?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=o_social&amp;utm_term=gallup&amp;utm_campaign=x-news-eci_070324" target="_blank" rel="noopener">survey</a> taken over the same time period showed that Americans have an overall negative view of the current economic conditions. Forty-eight percent of respondents said economic conditions in the U.S. are &#8220;poor,&#8221; 28% said they are &#8220;only fair,&#8221; and only 25% said they are &#8220;excellent/good.&#8221; Nearly 70% of Americans said they believe the economy is &#8220;getting worse,&#8221; and 26% said it&#8217;s &#8220;getting better.&#8221;

<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jason-aldean">Jason Aldean</a> revealed the advice late-country star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/toby-keith">Toby Keith</a> taught him about unapologetically speaking his mind when it comes to what he believes, even when it’s not “the popular opinion.”
Speaking to <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/jason-aldean-toby-keith-taught-him-unapologetic-about-speaking-mind">Fox News</a> ahead of his appearance on the 2024 Academy of Country Music Awards on Thursday, the 47-year-old country singer had nothing but praise for Keith and said he was a “guy that a lot of us looked up to.”
&#8220;For me personally, he was a guy that I feel like &#8230; just always spoke his mind,&#8221; Aldean said. &#8220;He said what he thought, whether it was the popular opinion or not. And it wasn&#8217;t, you know, it didn&#8217;t always go well for him, and he didn&#8217;t care.”
“I mean, it was something that if he felt strongly about it and felt like it was something he believed in, he was going to speak his mind,” he added. “To me, from a personal level, that was something to me that was always inspiring, as far as like, &#8216;Hey, you can still be an artist and be true to who you are and go out and not be afraid to speak out.&#8217; And I think that was something that always kind of stood with me.&#8221;

Aldean continued and said what he learned from the late singer was to &#8220;never apologize for being patriotic. Just being not afraid to speak your mind, stand up for what you believe in. Whether other people agree with it or not, be who you are and be unapologetic about it. And I think that&#8217;s pretty good advice.&#8221;
On Thursday, the “Try That In A Small Town” star will be performing a <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C685ML4IsGu/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tribute to Keith</a> at the annual ACM Awards, the outlet noted.
Keith died earlier this year following a lengthy battle with stomach cancer. He was 62. Following his death, the “Red Solo Cup” hitmaker was announced as one of the new inductees into the Country Hall of Fame. He died the day before he would’ve learned about his inclusion in the hall, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fans-react-to-toby-keiths-upcoming-induction-into-country-music-hall-of-fame-hes-in-heaven-singing-his-heart-out">reported</a>.

Following <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cancers-a-rollercoaster-toby-keith-said-faith-got-him-through-health-battle-in-intv-before-his-death">Keith’</a>s diagnosis in 2021, he talked about his incredible country singing career.
“Just seeing how enormous the career I amassed over 30 years when they show the video,” he told <a href="https://people.com/toby-keith-reflected-on-30-year-career-in-final-people-interview-exclusive-8559418">People magazine</a> at the time. “You know where you were when you wrote all those songs, you hear those numbers and you’re just like, you looked up one day and all of a sudden 30 years went by.”

The late country singer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/toby-keith">Toby Keith</a>’s daughter, Krystal Keith, delivered remarks at the University of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/oklahoma">Oklahoma</a>’s commencement ceremony last week while accepting an honorary degree on his behalf.
Keith died in February following a battle with stomach cancer. 
&#8220;When he learned last fall that he was being inducted to Sooner Nation on this high of a level, he was so excited, and he was so proud,&#8221; Krystal said during her speech, per <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/toby-keiths-daughter-says-late-country-music-legend-told-her-never-apologize-for-being-patriotic">Fox News</a>.
Krystal went on to describe how her dad, an Oklahoma native, was devoted to the university, especially its sports teams, and was honored when he found out he&#8217;d be receiving the honorary degree.
&#8220;I actually made a joke about how many hours I spent here getting my bachelor’s degree, and he joked that he didn’t have to work that hard to get his,” she continued. “But we all know he earned it and spent many more hours dedicating his life to earning it this way. He loved his family (he loved all of us), God, our country, and Sooner Nation.&#8221;
&#8220;Throughout his life and career, he made sure to work hard to have the best, to be the best. He often said, ‘They may write better than me, they may sing better than me, and they may look better than me, but they will NEVER outwork me,’&#8221; Krystal said during her speech. &#8220;And that made all the difference. He was a larger-than-life legend, he was an icon, he did things his own way, his songs inspired nearly everyone in country music and beyond.&#8221;
The country music legend’s daughter also discussed how proud her father was to be an American, a value he passed to his children. &#8220;He always said, ‘Never apologize for being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/patriotism">patriotic</a>,’ and practiced what he preached through his work with the USO [United Service Organizations],&#8221; Krystal said. 
She also described his dedication to performing for the military. &#8220;He was going into the most dangerous zones, where guys that never got those entertainers to come to them, were housed and were sitting, and he would go and boost their morale. And that’s who he wanted to go see. We called him Captain America. And that’s something he earned.&#8221;

&#8220;He had faith and believed in himself. He never gave up the fight, even when the odds were against him. He would want me to tell you to never give up on yourself. As you start your next journey in life, know that you have strong roots here at the University of Oklahoma. Work hard and be the captain of your own ship. Believe in yourself and live your dream.&#8221;
Keith was also posthumously inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame after being selected for the honor days before his death.

David Cone, a co-host of The Daily Wire’s sports podcast “Crain &amp; Co.,” dropped his first country single this week with his song about “blue jeans” and “rock and roll” in “Just What America Needs.”
On Friday, the Daily Wire host announced his new country song, which he worked on with Nashville legend Kent Wells, Dolly Parton’s long-time producer. “Just What American Needs” is the first of six singles Cone will be releasing in the next few months. Cone said that Wells, the legendary music producer who is coming off a hugely successful album release in Dolly Parton’s “Rockstar,” was impressed by what he heard in the “Crain &amp; Co.” hosts new songs.
Cone revealed the song <a href="https://x.com/davidadamcone/status/1786388786462511475" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in a post on X</a>, which showcased him rocking out to lyrics about finding a good woman that he loves who is “Just What America Needs.” Cone said the song “intersects with the missional statement of what I want to do in my life now, and with the company I work for with The Daily Wire.”

“I thought now that I have a platform with this sports show, ‘Crain &amp; Co.’ and the aftermath of our movie ‘Lady Ballers,’ now would be the best time to release new music, especially music that is patriotic,” he added. “‘Just What America Needs’ seemed like the no-brainer song for me to start with.”
Cone said his other five singles will be released over the next few months — one of which is another patriotic song titled “American Made,” which Cone hopes to release around the Fourth of July.
Additionally, Cone will release “Flavors of Kentucky,” “Southward Bound,” “Die in Alabama,” and “Thompson&#8217;s Station Train.” The Daily Wire host taught himself how to play the guitar as a senior at the University of Michigan before he started writing music and playing at venues in Atlanta and Nashville.
One powerful line in “Just What America Needs” features Cone singing about how a woman “proudly raised in the USA” likes “social living, not socialism” and suggests that with “few more like her, this country would be okay.”
The chorus praises the woman because she, “likes blue jeans and rock and roll, raised up right, loving country roads. ‘Free Bird’ on the radio, she’s just what America needs.”
In the song, the “Crain &amp; Co.” host notes that he used to sit and complain “about how there was no use of dating any of these girls today,” until he heard this one woman “singing God bless the USA.”
“‘Just What America Needs’ is as close to me being the actual protagonist as possible. And the woman who he’s loving in the song is as close to being my wife as possible,” Cone said.
Cone revealed that the final hurdle to clear in “Just What America Needs” came at “the last turnaround verse.”
“I came up with the line, ‘But she ain&#8217;t perfect, she loves pizza cold,’ and when I wrote that line I thought it’s now been elevated, and now the song can be complete,” Cone said. “Before that I think it opened itself up to criticism that it was just a cliche patriotic song, but that last part there [shows] I’m not holding people who are just what America needs to a perfect standard because this girl isn’t either. She eats her pizza cold. To me, it was a perfect way to wrap up a song.”

The trend of patriotic students confronting the activists has burgeoned at universities in Southern states.
On Thursday, a group of students at the University of Mississippi belted out “The Star-Spangled Banner,” drowning out the chanting and shouting of pro-Hamas protesters on their campus.
In a video posted to X on Tuesday, a number of students could be heard singing the national anthem at the top of their lungs while the shouts of nearby protesters — several of whom carried large Palestinian flags — were completely overpowered.

On North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus, a group of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/gofundme-set-up-to-fund-rager-for-frat-boys-who-defended-american-flag-on-unc-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fraternity boys</a> fought back when anti-Israel protesters attempted to replace an American flag with a Palestinian flag. They stepped in and kept the American flag from touching the ground, even as the protesters surrounded them and hurled insults, water, and other objects their way.
A GoFundMe was set up to fund a “<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/pi-kappa-phi-men-defended-their-flag-throw-em-a-rager?utm_campaign=p_lico+share-sheet-first-launch&amp;utm_medium=copy_link&amp;utm_source=customer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rager</a>” for the UNC fraternity brothers who helped defend the American flag on the University of North Carolina’s Chapel Hill campus.
Pi Kappa Phi member Guillermo Estrada explained, “My fraternity brother and others ran over to hold it up, in order for it not to touch the ground. People began throwing water bottles at us, rocks, sticks, calling us profane names. We stood for an hour defending the flag so many fight to protect.”

News Nation anchor Chris Cuomo admitted during a recent broadcast that his former employer, ABC News, had banned American flag pins in the aftermath of the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States.
Cuomo was responding to complaints from people who he said had told him not to use the word &#8220;we&#8221; when talking about Americans — and he made it clear that he had no interest in complying with that request.

&#8220;I’ll tell you really the truth, and I don’t like to say this, if these college kids had been mouthing off about &#8216;we got what we deserved&#8217; the way they’re saying about Israel right now, this would have been a very violent time in this country. And thank God it didn’t happen then and I hope it doesn’t happen,&#8221; Cuomo said.
&#8220;And if you think the country would have tolerated support for al-Qaeda’s actions, as we’re hearing now, it would have been bedlam. Again, I’ve seen a lot of acts of terror. I’ve seen a lot of brutality, I’ve seen a lot of death. I’ve seen a lot of heads and things chopped off and burned and all the different things that you see in movies. Colorado Democrat Governor Jared Polis, an avid <a href="https://www.denverpost.com/2023/04/14/colorado-abortion-gender-care-protections-expanded/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">supporter</a> of abortion and transgenderism, surprisingly came to the defense of a Colorado middle-schooler this week who was kicked out of class for wearing a patch of the Gadsden flag on his backpack.
Jaiden Rodriguez, 12, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/colorado-7th-grader-kicked-out-of-class-for-gadsden-patch-because-of-slavery-origins" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pulled from class</a> at The Vanguard School for having the iconic flag on his backpack, with a school official demanding that he needed &#8220;to take that patch off&#8221; and that the Gadsden flag is not allowed in class because it has “origins with slavery” and the “slave trade.”
Polis appeared on CNN Wednesday night where he defended the Gadsden flag and the student&#8217;s right to wear to it.
“The ‘Don’t Tread On Me’ flag, the Gadsden flag, is really an iconic American flag. It’s flown over units of our military, you know, of course it’s been adopted by the Tea Party and others, sure it has, but a kid could have an ‘I love the Tea Party&#8217; pin on their backpack, too,” Polis said. “Let’s just let kids have their free expression in school, and if they want to advocate for their political beliefs, I think that’s something that should be encouraged.&#8221;
CNN host Abby Phillip suggested that the teacher &#8220;made the association&#8221; that the flag was connected to slavery &#8220;because it has been associated with the right, with the Tea Party and perhaps with the Republican Party.&#8221;
&#8220;You know, it’s a good opportunity to really go through the history and see the pride really as Americans that we should all take in the Gadsden flag,&#8221; Polis responded. &#8220;The rattlesnake, as Ben Franklin said, ‘They never attack first, but they never back down once they’re in a fight.’ And a lot of Americans identify with that spirit.&#8221;
&#8220;But look, it goes deeper [than] that. If we want the moral high ground, Abby, to say that schools shouldn’t be banning rainbow flags on kids’ binders or backpacks to celebrate Pride, we have to also say they shouldn’t be banning free speech on the other side,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;This is a country that treasures free speech, and frankly, I hope it leads to a frank discussion in that school and others around the country about how free speech means that we support the speech even when we don’t agree with it.&#8221;
