An earthquake measuring 6.8 on the Richter scale struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan — near the Afghanistan-Tajikistan border — on Tuesday, sending shockwaves and tremors that could be felt as far out as India&#8217;s capital city of New Delhi.
Reuters issued a <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/magnitude-68-earthquake-strikes-hindu-kush-afghanistan-gfz-2023-03-21/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">preliminary report</a> on the quake, which occurred at 10:17 p.m. local time, citing data from the German Research Center for Geoscience (GFZ). The GFZ determined that the quake had occurred at a depth of 114 miles.

Earthquake Death Toll Triples In Third Day As Thousands More Feared Dead

U.S. Military officials said Tuesday that the United States European Command has begun sending aid to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/turkey" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Turkey</a> and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/syria" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Syria</a> after two massive earthquakes rocked both nations within the past 24 hours, killing thousands of people.
&#8220;Using a whole of government approach, we remain in close contact with our Turkish Ally to determine what assistance is needed to help those affected by the disaster,&#8221; Marine Lt. Col. Garron J. Garn said in a statement to <a href="https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2023/02/07/us-government-begins-sending-earthquake-aid-to-turkey/?utm_source=twitter&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_campaign=tw_at" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Military Times</a>.
Two earthquakes, which reached 7.8 and 7.5 magnitudes, devastated parts of Turkey and Syria, leaving an estimated 3,000 structures destroyed and approximately 7,200 people dead.
Around 1,500 have been found dead in Syria, and more than 5,400 were killed in Turkey as rescue workers continue to search for survivors following the worst natural disaster to hit the region since the 1939 Erzincan earthquake that killed more than 30,000 people.

Garn said the command is coordinating with the Department of State, the U.S. Agency for International Development Bureau of Humanitarian Assistance, and other U.S. interagency partners to establish what capabilities are needed and available to support requests by the government of Turkey.
President Joe Biden told President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of Turkey the United States stands ready to provide &#8220;any and all needed assistance&#8221; to the NATO Ally in response to the tragedy.
Biden said that &#8220;U.S. teams are deploying quickly to support Turkish search and rescue efforts and coordinate other assistance that may be required by people affected by the earthquakes, including health services or basic relief items,&#8221; a readout of Biden&#8217;s <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/02/06/readout-of-president-bidens-call-with-president-erdogan-of-turkiye/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">conversation</a> with Erdogan said on February 6.
The U.S. Agency for International Development, or USAID, and the U.S. Air Force have sent the first round of aid from Dover, Delaware.

President Erdogan declared a three-month state of emergency in 10 provinces on Tuesday that were impacted by the devastating earthquakes.
&#8220;We have decided to declare a state of emergency to ensure that our [rescue and recovery] work can be carried out quickly,&#8221; Erdogan said, Al Jazeera <a href="https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/2/7/turkey-declares-3-month-emergency-in-10-quake-hit-provinces" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
The Epoch Times <a href="https://www.theepochtimes.com/earthquake-death-toll-crosses-5000-as-turkey-experiences-285-aftershocks_5039212.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that international aid for Turkey and Syria in the Damascus region has poured in from all over the world.
Teams from Netherlands, U.K., and Romania have dispatched crews to Turkey, while Israel, Germany, and France have reportedly said they would also offer assistance. India sent a 99-member medical team with X-ray machines, an oxygen generation plant, and cardiac monitors to set up a 30-bed medical facility.
A spokesperson for British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said, according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/live-blog/earthquake-turkey-syria-live-updates-rcna69449" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC</a>, that a team of 77 British search and rescue personnel arrived in the city of Gaziantep in Turkey today with specialist equipment and dogs in response to a request from the Turkish government and would start assisting with the rescue effort.
World Health Organization (WHO) officials warned that the death toll could rise to approximately 20,000 as rescue teams continue search operations in the coming days.
&#8220;It&#8217;s now a race against time. The baby girl is being treated at a hospital in Afrin, Syria, and is in stable condition after sustaining bruises, lacerations, and hypothermia. The baby’s body temperature reportedly dropped to 95 degrees after her mother gave birth to her. Dr. Hani Maarouf, who treated the baby, estimated that she was found just hours after being born and would not have survived much longer in the cold temperatures. 
“Had the girl been left for an hour more, she would have died,” he said, according to the AP. 
The baby’s parents and four siblings reportedly attempted to flee the building as the earthquake hit the northwest Syrian town, but all were crushed and died under the rubble. Their bodies were found near the building’s entrance, according to a relative.

True to its long tradition of sending aid to countries devasted by natural disasters, Israel <a href="https://www.timesofisrael.com/liveblog-february-6-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">sent</a> a 150-person military aid mission to Turkey on Monday in the wake of the massive 7.8 earthquake and its 7.5 aftershock that shook Turkey to its foundations and killed roughly 3,000 people.
“Some 150 rescue experts are prepared to leave for Turkey in the next few hours. Of these, a third are headquarters and intelligence, and two-thirds have rescue, medical, and engineering capabilities,” Col. Golan Vach, commander of the IDF National Rescue Unit, stated.
&#8220;At the request of the Turkish government, I have instructed all authorities to make immediate preparations to provide medical, and search and rescue assistance,&#8221; Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu <a href="https://www.deccanherald.com/international/world-news-politics/israel-to-send-aid-to-quake-stricken-turkey-netanyahu-1188465.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a>. “The foreign and defense ministers have already been in contact with their counterparts and we will — in the coming hours — agree on the dispatching of a delegation as soon as possible.”
“This is what we do around the world and this is what we do in areas close to us,” Netanyahu <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/world/turkey-syria-earthquake-biden-netanyahu-other-world-leaders-offer-aid-thousands-killed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">continued</a>. “Since a request was also received to do this – for the many who were injured in the earthquake in Syria, I have instructed that this be done as well.”
Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen said Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu informed him Turkey would “welcome the Israeli aid.” The operation, titled “Olive Branches,” saw two Israeli search and rescue teams sent to Turkey early Monday; a second flight was planned containing the full IDF rescue and medical teams. Defense Minister Yoav Gallant approved the IDF building a field hospital in Turkey.

Israel sent 80 tons of supplies food, tents, generators, baby formula, diapers and bedding to the U.S, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, as well as first response aid to the victims of the massive 2004 tsunami that struck Indonesia and Sri Lanka. In 2005, Israel also sent food and supplies to Kashmir after an earthquake there; in 2008 Israell sent food to the Congo. In 2009 Israel sent relief to storm victims in the Philippines.
In January 2010, Israel sent over 200 members of a disaster relief team, the first relief team sent from anywhere in the world, to Haiti, which had been devastated by an earthquake. The next year, in March 2011, Israel was one of the first countries to send aid to Japan after crushing earthquakes struck there.

The earthquake that rocked Turkey and Syria early Monday morning has killed more than 3,600 people, according to the latest numbers provided by officials, a significant jump from the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/at-least-1600-dead-after-massive-earthquakes-rock-the-middle-east" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2,300 figure reported hours earlier</a>.
At least 2,316 people were killed in Turkey, the country&#8217;s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority reported, <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/02/05/turkey-earthquake-istanbul-death-toll/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to The Washington Post</a>. The agency also said at least 13,000 people were injured and 3,471 buildings collapsed, while authorities in Syria reported at least 1,350 dead and 3,411 people injured, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/live-blog/turkey-syria-earthquake-live-updates-rcna69266#rcrd10469" target="_blank" rel="noopener">per NBC News</a>.

Thousands of people are reported dead in Turkey and Syria following two earthquakes that rocked the region on Monday.
The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck shortly after 4 am was one of the strongest to hit Turkey over the last hundred years, leading to scores of buildings and homes being flattened into rubble. Later in the afternoon, a 7.5-magnitude shaker hit the southeastern part of the country.
More than 2,300 people <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2023/02/05/turkey-earthquake-istanbul-death-toll/">reportedly</a> died after the quakes rocked the region, sending tremors as far away as Lebanon, Jordan, Israel, and Egypt.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000jllz/pager">noted</a> the affected population resides in structures that are extremely vulnerable to earthquake shaking. The report said that &#8220;high casualties and extensive damage are probable and the disaster is likely widespread.&#8221;
According to the USGS&#8217;s early <a href="https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eventpage/us6000jllz/pager">estimates</a>, there is a 47% chance of that the earthquake will have killed between 1,000 to 10,000 people and a 20% chance of that the earthquake could have killed between 10,000 and 100,000.
One of the most stunning scenes filmed in the aftermath was a fire that reportedly broke out at a gas line.

The eruption of Hawaii’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hawaii-volcano-threatens-to-cutoff-major-highway" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mauna Loa volcano</a> has led to the National Guard being activated over concerns regarding lava moving closer to a major commuter highway.
The volcano has been spewing lava for ten days. The lava is now less than two miles from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway, but there is still no threat “to any communities at this time,” <a href="https://hawaiicountygis.maps.arcgis.com/apps/dashboards/5865229bcba74020992b372ef18b6f17" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the County of Hawaii Hazard Impact Map website. The highway is a <a href="https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2022/12/06/mauna-loa-eruption-hawaii-state-national-guard/10843029002/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">quick</a> way to travel from the two sides of the island.
On Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey <a href="https://www.usgs.gov/volcanoes/mauna-loa/volcano-updates" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that “the flow front was about 1.93 mi (3.1 km) from the Daniel K. Inouye Highway (Saddle Road).”
The state’s Emergency Management Agency reported Monday evening that the National Guard had been activated.

The flow of lava is also speeding up, the survey pointed out. “During the past 24 hours, the lava flow advanced at an average rate of about 68 feet per hour […] about twice the rate for the past several days. Over shorter periods, the advance rate varied from 62 to 90 feet per hour,” it added.
However, when the lava reaches a flat area, “lava flows advance more slowly, spread out, and inflate,” it noted.
The spectacle has drawn observers and tourists who want to see the eruption of the volcano. Mauna Loa is the largest active volcano on the planet and started erupting last month on November 27 for the first <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/12/06/hawaii-activates-national-guard-mauna-loa-lava-nears-daniel-k-inouye/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">time</a> in almost forty years. Kilauea is a volcano that is close by and has also been erupting over the past year.
The entire Daniel K. Inouye Highway is open, but places next to the highway are shut down and not available to the public, <a href="https://nypost.com/2022/12/06/hawaii-activates-national-guard-mauna-loa-lava-nears-daniel-k-inouye/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Hawaii County Mayor Mitch Roth on Monday.
“With the lava being where it’s at, we feel pretty certain that the lava won’t impact any populated areas,” Roth said at a Monday press conference. “There’s a lot of (moving) pieces. How fast it’s moving. How close it’s gonna come to the highway. How long it will take if there’s any dangers that we’re seeing.”
Whether or not the lava will get to the highway is mainly based on the duration of the volcano&#8217;s eruption.
“We don’t know how long this eruption is going to last, and that will dictate whether or not the highway becomes more threatened,” Natalia Deligne, a volcanologist with the U.S. Geological Survey at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/06/us/mauna-loa-highway-kilauea-eruption-tuesday/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> CNN.

An underwater volcano that erupted earlier this year is believed to be the “largest ever recorded” with modern equipment, researchers <a href="https://niwa.co.nz/news/tonga-eruption-confirmed-as-largest-ever-recorded" target="_blank" rel="noopener">revealed</a> this week.
On January 15, 2022 the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano erupted in the Tongan archipelago, triggering tsunami waves and sending a sonic boom that could be heard throughout the world. Since then, a team of scientists have been investigating the historic eruption, concluding that it turned out to be one for the record books. 
“The eruption reached record heights, being the first we’ve ever seen to break through into the mesosphere,” <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/International/tongan-volcano-eruption-largest-recorded-zealand-scientists/story?id=93708595" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> New Zealand National Institute for Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) marine geologist Kevin Mackay. “It was like a shotgun blast directly into the sky,” he added.

The eruption in the South Pacific Ocean displaced 10 cubic kilometers of seafloor, which is equal to 2.6 million Olympic sized swimming pools, according to the NIWA. According to their findings, 75% of that material ended up within 20 kilometers of the volcano, meaning much of it remains unaccounted for.
“The volume of this ‘shotgun’ plume is estimated to be 1.9 [cubic kilometers] of material, which has been circulating in our atmosphere for months, causing the stunning sunsets we saw following the eruption,” Mackay said. The group added that the volcano’s caldera, or crater, is now 700 meters deeper than it was prior to the eruption.
NASA Earth Observatory <a href="https://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/images/149367/dramatic-changes-at-hunga-tonga-hunga-haapai" target="_blank" rel="noopener">says</a> that the blast from the volcanic eruption “released hundreds of times the equivalent mechanical energy” of the atomic bomb dropped over the Japanese city of Hiroshima. The tsunami waves that were created by the blast reached 15 meters high when they hit parts of Tonga, <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-australia-60039542" target="_blank" rel="noopener">devastating</a> the small South Pacific kingdom and leaving it covered in volcanic ash. 1,500 people were displaced and four were killed throughout the Tongan islands, according to the United States Geological Survey, who also noted that damage was recorded in Fiji, Hawaii, Chile, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, and California.
“While this eruption was large – one of the biggest since Krakatoa in 1883 – there have been others of similar magnitude since then that didn’t behave in the same way,” Mackay said, adding that “the difference here is that it’s an underwater volcano and it’s also part of the reason we got such big tsunami waves.”

Thousands of residents have been asked to evacuate parts of South Florida as Tropical Storm Nicole approaches the state&#8217;s east coast.
Mandatory evacuations are in place for two zones in Palm Beach County, with many other voluntary evacuations in place for those in the state&#8217;s barrier islands and low-lying areas.
&#8220;Palm Beach County is announcing evacuations for Zone A and B,&#8221; Palm Beach County Mayor Robert Weinroth said during a Tuesday afternoon news conference. &#8220;This includes mobile homes, barrier islands, and low-lying areas.&#8221;

Palm Beach County is not the only area shutting down due to the storm threat. Officials in Volusia County issued mandatory evacuations for people east of the Intracoastal Waterway.
&#8220;Storm surge of 3 to 5 feet is expected, possibly higher in some areas. Rainfall amounts of 2 to 4 inches are expected, with peak amounts up to 8 inches of rain,&#8221; a Wednesday Volusia County <a href="https://www.volusia.org/news/news-releases.stml?portalProcess_dd_0_1_1=showPublicPosting&amp;calendar_entry_id=85786" target="_blank" rel="noopener">update</a> read. &#8220;The probability for Tropical Storm winds has increased with a small chance of hurricane force winds. Coastal Volusia can expect wind gusts up to 60 to 70 mph, with slightly decreasing intensity of winds further inland. Timing of the arrival of tropical force winds is about 3 p.m. today.&#8221;
Voluntary evacuations are also in place for <a href="https://www.sjcfl.us/Hurricane/index.aspx" target="_blank" rel="noopener">St. Johns County</a>, including St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach, along with other counties along the eastern coast of the state.
Orlando International Airport, the state&#8217;s busiest airport, also announced on social media that it will shut down operations beginning at 4 p.m. Wednesday due to expected weather concerns.

Many residents across Florida are still recovering from Hurricane Ian, which struck the Gulf Coast at the end of September. The storm devastated Fort Myers Beach, destroying the pier. The causeway to Sanibel Island was also destroyed.
Ian moved across the state and up the eastern side of Florida where it returned to hurricane strength and slammed into the Carolina coast. More than 100 people were killed in Florida and North Carolina during the hurricane.

More than 100 people have been confirmed dead in Florida as search and rescue crews continue their efforts following Hurricane Ian.
As of Tuesday, at least 102 people were reported as killed by the hurricane in Florida, with 55 in Lee County, <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/04/us/hurricane-ian-florida-recovery-tuesday">according</a> to CNN.
“When you are walking around the ruins, it’s an apocalyptic scene,” Fort Myers Beach City Councilman Bill Veach told CNN. “You see a friend that you weren’t sure was alive or dead and that brings you joy. A joy that is so much more than the loss of property.&#8221;
Despite the tragic loss of life, the governor&#8217;s office has reported over 1,900 rescues as of Monday&#8217;s update by Governor Ron DeSantis (R). Many of the rescues included residents of Sanibel and Captiva Islands off the coast of Fort Myers involving residents who did not evacuate as the only bridge to the mainland was partially destroyed during the hurricane.
Tens of thousands of properties have been checked since the hurricane swept through central Florida, with over 45,000 properties noted in a Monday update.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve been to about every address. We believe that we have searched everything very quickly. Now we are going back for a second look,&#8221; Kevin Guthrie, director of Florida&#8217;s emergency management, <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/florida-search-rescue-efforts-redoubled-aftermath-deadly-hurricane-ian-2022-10-03/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on Monday.
&#8220;I am not saying we are not going to find anybody else. We may find other people,&#8221; he added.

Over 2.5 million Florida homes were without power due to the hurricane. As of Tuesday, about 391,000 homes and businesses remained without power. All customers who can receive power to their homes hoping to have electricity returned by Sunday, <a href="https://twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1dRJZMwPQRwGB" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to</a> Deanne Criswell, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Schools in 13 counties remained closed as of Monday. Officials expect to return to classrooms in all counties by the end of the week.
In addition to numerous deaths in Florida, four deaths were reported in North Carolina on Monday.
“The storm has passed, but many hazards remain with downed trees, downed power lines and power outages,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper (D) shared in a <a href="https://governor.nc.gov/news/press-releases/2022/10/01/storm-cleanup-and-power-restoration-underway-after-hurricane-ian" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on Monday. “We mourn with the families of those who have died and urge everyone to be cautious while cleaning up to avoid more deaths or injuries.”
The statement noted that the four deaths included two separate vehicle accidents related to Ian in Johnston County on Friday. Additionally, a 22-year-old in Martin County died Friday in a vehicle incident that led to drowning, while a 65-year-old in Johnston County died on Saturday after a generator was left running in a closed garage.
President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden are expected to visit Florida on Wednesday to meet with state leaders and those impacted by Hurricane Ian.
