When I was 22-years-old, I packed up my life in Poland and moved to the United States to pursue my dreams by attending the Berklee College of Music in Boston. I didn’t know exactly what my future would hold, but I knew music would be a big part of it. 
Little did I know that my future would also include a sweet baby boy and an encounter with a pregnancy resource center that would change my life for the better.
I found out I was expecting a baby during my last semester at Berklee. Even though we decided to start a family, the father of the child was sometimes silent and would become distant. Then, he would come back into the picture again. I started to experience many serious issues in my relationship with the father of my baby, so I ended up in need of support from family and friends. 
Finally, I decided we shouldn’t be together, but I didn’t realize the consequences of refusing to be with my baby’s father would be so huge and would have so much impact on my financial situation.
Thankfully, when I was seven months pregnant, a friend connected me with Boston Center for Pregnancy Choices (BCPC), a pregnancy resource center that provides free resources and support for pregnant women in need. At the time, I was living in Woburn, MA, with an electric scooter as my only form of transportation. My job helped make ends meet, but I couldn’t afford a car. In order to get to the center, I had to take a train, a bus, and then the subway. While it was a long journey, I was determined to find support for my baby and me.
I was exhausted when I finally walked through the center doors, but the warmth from the BCPC staff energized me and made me hopeful for the months ahead.
BCPC explained the three options available to pregnant women. Despite always having my mind made up to raise my child with or without the father, it was helpful to understand all the options and resources that were available.
Unbeknownst to me, while I was visiting the center, a local pastor decided to donate a car to BCPC and was looking for a deserving candidate. Both the center and the pastor agreed that I would be the perfect recipient.
For me, receiving that car was life changing. It allowed me to go where I wanted and do what I needed in order to better provide for myself and my child. For the first time, I did not have to depend on anyone else for reliable transportation. While it may have just been a car to others, it was a whole new world of freedom and endless possibilities for me.
A few months later, I gave birth to my beautiful son Nathaniel and continued to receive support from BCPC. The staff regularly visited us and provided everything that a new mother would need. I received a new rocking chair, diapers, wipes, clothes and various other baby supplies at no cost. The donated car continued to help with my transition to motherhood by allowing me to drive Nathaniel to doctor appointments and daycare.
The women at the center did not owe me anything, but out of the kindness of their hearts, they gave my child and me unconditional love and support. No matter what challenges I experienced, BCPC was there for Nathaniel and me. BCPC’s support gave me the confidence, knowledge, and freedom to make my own decisions for both me and my child.
Nathaniel is now almost a year old, and we have since moved to Nashville so I could pursue my dream of being a songwriter — something that never would have happened without my own car and the generosity of BCPC.
My life is currently full of music, just as I had planned. But it now has the added bonus of also including a beautiful baby boy and a group of supportive women at BCPC who are like family to me.
I am grateful that centers like BCPC exist, and I believe that our government officials should put more effort into making society aware of the existence of these centers and how much they can help people like me and other mothers.

NASHVILLE—An illegal immigrant admitted to killing a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nashville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nashville</a> business owner in a hit-and-run, a detective testified on Tuesday. 
Nashville Police Homicide Detective Tyler Manivong testified during a preliminary hearing that 29-year-old Ulises Martinez, an illegal immigrant from Mexico, admitted to police last month that he was driving the truck that on June 19 struck 42-year-old Matt Carney in the parking lot of <a href="https://www.smokinthighs.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smokin Thighs</a>, Carney&#8217;s popular chicken restaurant and bar. Carney died from his injuries on July 4. 
Martinez was arrested on July 18 and charged by police with criminal homicide, multiple counts of felony theft, criminal impersonation, tampering with evidence, and evading arrest. 
The Daily Wire was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-accused-of-killing-nashville-restaurant-owner-had-previous-felony-charges-dismissed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first to confirm</a> Martinez’s immigration status with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), which said it did not know when Martinez illegally entered the country. Nashville Judge Jim Todd dismissed three previous felony charges against Martinez in March, just months before the hit-and-run. 
Martinez appeared in an orange prison jumpsuit for the preliminary hearing at the Justice A.A. Birch building in Nashville. He fidgeted throughout the hearing as he an interpreter translated the proceedings for him.
Carney&#8217;s friends, co-workers, and family — including wife, Molly — attended the hearing and were emotional as Judge Robin Kimbrough-Hayes heard evidence about the hit-and-run. Kimbrough-Hayes ruled that Nashville prosecutors, led by Assistant District Attorney Lody Powers, had met the burden of proof and bonded the case over to a grand jury. 
Manivong testified that Martinez admitted during an interview with police after his arrest that he was driving the Nissan Frontier truck that struck Carney. The detective said Martinez told him that he and 31-year-old Adrian Diaz-Aguirre drove into the Smokin Thighs parking lot the day of the incident, where they spotted a blue truck with power tools in the back. 
Manivong said Martinez told him that Diaz-Aguirre got out and began stealing the tools before Carney came out and tried to stop them. 
“They tried to drive away,” Manivong said, adding that Martinez claimed that Carney jumped on the hood of the truck to stop them. Diaz-Aguirre reportedly told Matinez to, “go, go, go,” and “so he accelerated,” Manivong said. 
After the incident, Manivong said that Martinez told him “he was afraid of getting arrested” and that a man named Kevin had sold the tools they stole from Carney. 
Diaz-Aguirre is also an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/two-illegal-immigrants-arrested-in-relation-to-hit-and-run-death-of-beloved-nashville-restaurant-owner" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal immigrant</a> from Mexico who has been deported four times, most recently in 2020. He has a lengthy criminal history, including convictions for aggravated burglary in Tennessee 2014, possession of controlled substances in Indiana in 2019, and illegal re-entry in Indiana in 2020.
The court also heard testimony from several people who witnessed the hit-and-run. A man named Andrew Peapos said he was out running in the area around Smokin Thighs on June 19 when he saw a “black truck sped off in the distance” after seeing “a body floating over the car.” 
Peapos ran up to Carney, who was thrown into the street, and called 911. He said that Carney was bleeding a lot and that a nurse who showed up at the scene was unable to administer CPR to him “because he was in such a bad state.” 
Another witness, a woman named Olivia Lehing, said she was driving when she saw a truck send a body “into the air” and then drive “very fast” away from the scene. 
Police traffic crash investigator Jarett Ipox and private investigator Robert Young of Covert Results testified about the investigation during the hearing. Young, who was a friend of Carney&#8217;s, helped track down Martinez and surveillance footage that helped police identify the truck. Young noted that just 26 seconds elapsed between when Carney left his restaurant and when he was hit.
The case now goes to a grand jury to consider the charges Martinez may face. ICE has placed an immigration detainer on Martinez, barring his release.
Carney’s death made national headlines when former President Donald Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-decries-vicious-illegal-immigrant-suspected-of-murdering-nashville-restaurant-owner" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spoke about him</a> during a rally in Montana earlier this month. 
“Look at what’s happening to our cities. Our cities are being overrun,” Trump said. “On July 4th, a 42-year-old Nashville man died after he tried to stop an illegal alien from stealing tools out of his truck. The illegal alien did a number on this man that nobody could even believe. The police officers said one of the most vicious crimes they’ve ever seen.”

Country music star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/country-star-lainey-wilson-says-long-line-of-farmers-taught-her-work-ethic" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lainey Wilson</a> opened up about what she called the “dark days” she went through before her music career finally took off.
Speaking to the <a href="https://apnews.com/article/lainey-wilson-interview-whirlwind-9659b6919f25ff037f732e42a4ef0c74" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>, the 32-year-old country singer talked about living in a bumper-pull camper trailer off her mentor’s studio for three years and freezing during the winters before one of her songs hit number one, 13 years after moving to Nashville to make her dream a reality.
&#8220;It’s been a journey,&#8221; Wilson said. &#8220;I’ve been in Nashville for 13 years and I tell people I’m like, it feels like I got there yesterday, but I also feel like I’ve been there my whole life.&#8221;
&#8220;I had always heard that Nashville was a 10-year town,” she added. “And I believe ‘Things a Man Oughta Know’ went No. 1, like, 10 years and a day after being there.”
&#8220;I should have had moments where I should have packed it up and went home,” Wilson continued. “I should have went back to Louisiana. But I never had those feelings. I think there’s something really beautiful about being naive. And, since I was a little girl, I’ve always had stars in my eyes.&#8221;
Speaking to “<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TrecteS0lcs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Good Morning America</a>” in 2022, Wilson said returning to that parking lot where she lived in a trailer brought her a “sense of hopefulness,” but also a “little sadness.”
“There were a lot of dark days for me,” Wilson said at the time. “I was very lonely. I didn&#8217;t know hardly anybody in town.&#8221;

On Friday, she released her fifth studio album, titled “Whirlwind,” and said she’s gone through a lot after making that trip from her small hometown of Baskin, Louisiana, to becoming a country star. In February, she took home her first Grammy.
&#8220;The word that I could use to describe the last couple of years is ‘whirlwind,'&#8221; Wilson told the AP. &#8220;I feel like my life has changed a whole lot. But I still feel like the same old girl trying to keep one foot on the ground.&#8221;
&#8220;And so, I think it’s just about grasping on to those things that truly make me, me and the artist where I can tell stories to relate to folks.&#8221;
The country singer previously told <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/country-star-lainey-wilson-career-took-off-after-dark-days-nashville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Fox News</a> that she’s convinced all the adversity she went through was just part of her “story.”
“And I think the Lord kind of wanted me to live a little bit more life, so I could have more stories to tell, so I could relate to more people,&#8221; Wilson said. &#8220;That&#8217;s what it&#8217;s about when you kind of zoom out and you think about all of this. It&#8217;s important to remember and realize, why are we doing this? And what are we doing this for?&#8221;
&#8220;It&#8217;s just because we all want to feel something. And, I think, because of that rejection, I think people can relate to some of my stories,” she added.

Boreing praised the film during the latest <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/daily-wire-backstage-live-at-the-ryman-240815">episode</a> of Backstage filmed at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Wednesday. The episode was released on Thursday, coinciding with the release of pre-sale tickets for the new movie starring Daily Wire host Matt Walsh.
Walsh’s latest film shows the Daily Wire commentator going undercover among members of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion crowd, including scoring a sitdown interview with author Robin DiAngelo. “Am I Racist?” is Walsh’s second film after “What Is A Woman?” released in 2022.

It’s really something we haven’t seen before from the right,” Boreing said. “It is a genuine comedy in which you allow these people to be the butt of the joke in a way that we’ve historically only seen from Sacha Baron Cohen, or even John Stewart in sort of the heyday of the Daily Show.”
“You both mock and allow these people to mock themselves in a way that I don’t think we’ve ever seen on the right. It’s a truly special film and a true risk,” Boreing said.
“Am I A Racist?” will open in theaters on September 13. Walsh asked fans to buy tickets to see the movie earlier in order to give it the widest possible reach.

Speaking at a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/episode/election-wire-president-trump-live-from-bozeman" target="_blank" rel="noopener">packed rally</a> on Friday night in Montana, former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> lamented the death of a Nashville business owner who police say was killed by an illegal immigrant from Mexico in a deadly hit-and-run.
During his rally, Trump spoke about 42-year-old Matt Carney, a restaurant owner who died in Nashville on July 4 after police say he was struck by a truck on June 19 driven by 29-year-old illegal immigrant Ulises Martinez. Martinez’s immigration status was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/illegal-immigrant-accused-of-killing-nashville-restaurant-owner-had-previous-felony-charges-dismissed" target="_blank" rel="noopener">first reported</a> by The Daily Wire last month with ICE saying that he entered the country at an unknown date and location.
Trump, who has frequently warned of a “migrant crime wave,” spoke about Carney’s death as he listed a number of violent crimes illegal immigrants have been arrested for in recent months.
“They’re coming from prisons, they’re coming from jails, they’re coming from all over the place,” Trump said Friday during his rally in Bozeman. “Every day, Kamala is letting migrant criminals roam free to assault, rape, mutilate, and kill our citizens.”
“Look at what’s happening to our cities. According to police, Carney was struck on June 19 by a truck in the parking lot of his popular Nashville-based smoke chicken restaurant and bar <a href="https://www.smokinthighs.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smokin Thighs</a> after he attempted to stop Martinez and another illegal immigrant from stealing tools out of his truck. Carney died from his injuries on July 4.
Prior to the hit-and-run, Martinez was charged in March over a previous incident after a police officer arrested him for driving a stolen vehicle and the officer saw him taking tools out of parked vehicles. The charges were dismissed after a Nashville judge said that prosecutors failed to prove probable cause.
Martinez is currently being held in Davidson County Jail on multiple charges including criminal homicide, and his next hearing is scheduled for August 27.
After discussing a number of victims of illegal immigrant crime, Trump promised to enact a “Trump mass deportation,” warning that illegal immigrants would continue to surge into the country if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected president in November.
Trump has kept immigration a key part of his 2024 presidential campaign, calling out Harris&#8217; performance as President Joe Biden’s “border czar.”

A conservative publisher has appealed a decision from a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/tennessee" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tennessee</a> judge to block the release of the writings of the transgender-identifying shooter who killed three children and three adults at a Christian school in Nashville in March 2023.
The <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/13X9TxPLPreTm2LA7nRsao5xa4Y3_f1xI/view" target="_blank" rel="noopener">appeal</a>, from Star News Digital Media and Tennessee Star Editor-in-Chief Michael Patrick Leahy, was filed in the Tennessee Court of Appeals on Wednesday. Leahy is seeking to reverse a decision from Davidson County Judge I’Ashea Myles that said copyright claims put on the writings of the woman who attacked The Covenant School preempted public records requests. 
“We have appealed the very bad decision by TN Chancery Court Judge Myles to prohibit the release of the Covenant killer’s writings on the dubious claim of copyright ownership by intervenors. We will win on appeal,” Leahy said in a post on X. 
Last month, Myles sided with a group of Covenant parents who asserted a copyright claim onto the writings given to them by the shooter&#8217;s parents. The group had intervened to block the release of the writings after multiple parties sued the Nashville police department for access.

“Based upon Supremacy Clause and conflict preemption, the federal Copyright Act serves as a valid exemption to the Tennessee Public Records Act and thus preempts the disclosure of any original work of authorship in any form created by the assailant [shooter’s last name] which has been collected by Respondent Metro,” Myles wrote on July 4. 
The parties seeking access include Leahy, the Tennessee Firearms Association, The Tennessean, and the National Police Association. Leahy is being represented by  local lawyer Paul Krog and Nicholas Barry from the America First Legal Foundation. 
Earlier this year, police estimated they would release their investigative file by sometime in July, but that has not been done. It is unclear when the investigation will conclude.
Despite the judge’s ruling, portions of the writings have already been published by The Daily Wire and The Tennessee Star. Photos of the attacker’s journal <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/covenant-journal-revealed-my-imaginary-penis?topStoryPosition=1" target="_blank" rel="noopener">published</a> by The Daily Wire showed a woman who had been consumed by radical transgender theory and conveyed her anger at Christianity and her parents over their traditional views.
The Tennessee Star also sued the FBI for access to the attacker’s writings. A federal judge is currently reviewing that case.

Three pro-life activists targeted by the Biden administration over a peaceful protest at a Tennessee abortion facility were sentenced by a federal judge Tuesday to three years of probation, including 90 days of house arrest. 
Judge Chip Frensley sentenced Eva Zastrow, James Zastrow, and Paul Place, who were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/four-pro-lifers-face-prison-time-after-being-convicted-in-federal-court">convicted</a> in April of violating the FACE Act, a Clinton-era law guaranteeing entry into abortion facilities. The trio faced a maximum penalty of six months in prison, five years of probation, and a $10,000 fine.
The three were also sentenced to time served, which began back in October 2022 when they were first charged. The terms of their house arrest will include exceptions for work and church.
The Biden Justice Department charged the activists over their participation in a pro-life protest at Carefem, a Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, abortion facility, on March 5, 2021. On that day, a group of demonstrators gathered on the second floor of an office building in the hallway outside Carafem. The group prayed, sang hymns, and urged women showing up to the clinic to not get abortions. 
Prosecutors said the protesters sat in front of doors at Carafem and blocked women from coming inside. Frensley convicted them during a bench trial in April after less than 30 minutes of deliberation. 
During their trial, lawyers for the defendants said that their clients were merely practicing their faith in a peaceful manner. Place’s lawyers argued the trial demonstrated massive overreach by the federal government, saying that the Biden administration was prosecuting “people who were simply expressing their beliefs in a non-violent way.”
The three protesters spoke of their Christian faiths when given an opportunity to talk during Tuesday’s sentencing hearing.
James Zastrow said he was &#8220;obeying a higher law&#8221; when he took part in the protest, and expressed his belief that &#8220;preborn children are people.&#8221;
Eva Zastrow said her only ambition was to love God and her neighbors. She said that &#8220;God personally identified with the weak and vulnerable&#8221; and that she didn&#8217;t want anyone harmed at Carafem. Choking up, she read a poem she had written about the value of children. 
Place said everything he did at Carafem was done out of love, adding that &#8220;children are a blessing from the Lord.&#8221;
Over a dozen supporters gathered Tuesday morning outside the courthouse to pray and sing before the sentencing. They sang songs Christian hymns including &#8220;Rescue the Perishing&#8221; and &#8220;Stand Up, Stand Up For Jesus.&#8221;
Earlier this month, four others charged with violating the FACE Act and a felony charge of conspiring against civil rights over the same protest were sentenced in Nashville. One protester, Calvin Zastrow, was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pro-lifer-targeted-by-biden-admin-sentenced-to-prison">given</a> six months in prison over his participation in the protest. The Justice Department had requested over two years of incarceration. 
Three of his co-defendants, Paul Vaughn, Dennis Green, and Coleman Boyd, all avoided jail time.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/secret-service" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Secret Service</a> briefly held up former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> from taking the stage at the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/america-will-be-the-crypto-capital-of-the-planet-trump-fires-up-massive-crowd-at-bitcoin-conference" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bitcoin 2024 Conference</a> in Nashville on Saturday because of a security incident, according to a new report.
Sources told <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/07/29/us-news/secret-service-delayed-trump-from-taking-stage-at-nashville-conference-after-security-lapse-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the New York Post</a> the short delay was caused by two individuals bypassing metal detectors at a second screening area in the Music City Center after passing through an initial checkpoint.
The Secret Service reportedly said the two individuals were &#8220;credentialed and screened&#8221; but were removed from the event for not following the rules for entry.
&#8220;It was determined that there was no protective interest with these individuals and there was never a threat to the former president,&#8221; the agency said in its statement to the news outlet.
Trump did go on to take the stage at the conference in Nashville, during which he <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/america-will-be-the-crypto-capital-of-the-planet-trump-fires-up-massive-crowd-at-bitcoin-conference" target="_blank" rel="noopener">laid out his plan</a> to &#8220;ensure that the United States will be the crypto capital of the planet.&#8221;
The Secret Service is facing intense scrutiny following the assassination attempt on Trump at an outdoor campaign rally earlier this month.
A gunman, who was eventually killed by a Secret Service sniper, managed to get onto a nearby rooftop and began shooting at Trump in Butler, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/pennsylvania" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pennsylvania</a>.
Secret Service personnel rushed to protect Trump and escort him off the stage, but not before a bullet ripped through the former president&#8217;s right ear.
One rallygoer, 50-year-old fireman <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/dana-white-kid-rock-donate-to-fundraiser-for-shooting-victims-surpasses-2-million-in-under-24-hours" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Corey Comperatore</a>, was killed in the attack.
Two other rally attendees who were wounded — 74-year-old James Copenhaver and 57-year-old David Dutch — have been <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/second-rallygoer-injured-trump-assassination-attempt-released-hospital-rcna164003" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> from the hospital in recent days.
Former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secret-service-director-resigns-amid-uproar-over-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resigned</a> last week as she faced backlash over the security failure underlying the Trump rally shooting.
Ronald Rowe, who was <a href="https://x.com/ZcohenCNN/status/1815782978544431366" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chosen</a> to lead the Secret Service in an acting capacity, <a href="https://x.com/HowardMortman/status/1818292355167928356" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in congressional testimony on Tuesday that he could not defend why the roof was not &#8220;better secured.&#8221;
A number of investigations are underway, including inquiries led by Congress and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/homeland-security-inspector-general-investigating-secret-service-over-trump-rally-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Homeland Security Department&#8217;s inspector general</a>.

NASHVILLE — Former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> spoke at the Bitcoin 2024 Conference in Nashville on Saturday and promised to make the U.S. the cryptocurrency superpower of the world.
Crowds of people lined the streets of Tennessee&#8217;s capital to greet the president&#8217;s motorcade while more people waited in line inside the Music City Center to listen to the former president&#8217;s speech.
&#8220;This afternoon, I&#8217;m laying out my plans to ensure that the United States will be the crypto capital of the planet,&#8221; he said, adding that &#8220;Bitcoin stands for freedom, sovereignty, and independence from government.&#8221;
Trump also blasted Democrats&#8217; unfair &#8220;targeting&#8221; of cryptocurrency and promised to fire Securities and Exchange Commission Chairman Gary Gensler &#8220;on day one.&#8221; Gensler has been critical of Bitcoin, saying the cryptocurrency is &#8220;rife with fraud&#8221; and has pushed to police cryptocurrency more heavily.
Trump further promised to appoint a Bitcoin and crypto advisory council on the first day of his new term.
The Bitcoin 2024 Conference attracted an estimated 20,000 people over the weekend, which included many Trump supporters along with some backers of independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Kennedy spoke at the conference on Friday.
Vice President Kamala Harris, who is the presumptive Democratic nominee, was also reportedly in talks to speak at the conference, but she did not. The Harris campaign has reportedly reached out to billionaire Mark Cuban with questions about cryptocurrency as she gears up her presidential campaign.

Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, among other political figures, also spoke at the conference.
Multiple Bitcoin enthusiasts at the conference told The Daily Wire that they were excited to hear Trump&#8217;s speech and hope he will push to create a strategic reserve of Bitcoin if he&#8217;s elected president.
Saturday&#8217;s speech featured Trump&#8217;s strongest statements in support of cryptocurrency. Earlier this year, his campaign started accepting donations in cryptocurrency.

A judge dismissed three felony charges against an illegal immigrant accused of killing a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nashville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nashville</a> restaurant owner in a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/authorities-believe-man-charged-in-murder-of-nashville-restaurant-owner-is-illegal-immigrant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">hit-and-run</a> just months before the fatal incident. 
Police say that 29-year-old Ulises Martinez struck 42-year-old Matt Carney in the parking lot of <a href="https://www.smokinthighs.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Smokin Thighs</a>, Carney’s popular chicken restaurant and bar, on June 19, before speeding off and leaving the restaurant owner on the road. Carney died from his injuries on July 4. 
Martinez was arrested last week and was charged with criminal homicide, tampering with evidence, vehicle theft, criminal impersonation, and evading arrest. A hearing for the charges is scheduled for next month.
On Tuesday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) confirmed to The Daily Wire that Martinez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico, saying that he crossed into the United States at “an unknown date and location, without being admitted or paroled by an immigration officer.”
Martinez’s arrest over Carney&#8217;s death was not his first run-in with the law, court records show. 
In February, Martinez was arrested alongside 33-year-old Christian Arredondo. The pair was accused of stealing a white van, a red truck, and stealing tools from a white truck. 
However, on March 6, Nashville Judge Jim Todd dismissed all three charges during a preliminary hearing, according to a recording of the hearing obtained by The Daily Wire. Todd ruled that prosecutors failed to show probable cause.
During the hearing, Nashville Police Detective Luke Steigerwalt testified that he witnessed Martinez and Arredondo driving a white van on February 28 that had been reported stolen on February 22. 
The detective said that he followed the van after it was identified and watched the two men take tools and machinery out of the bed of one truck and put it in the stolen van. The detective added that he then saw them drive into one neighborhood, where they found a running truck and drove off with it before parking it at another location. 
The pair then drove the van to an apartment complex, where the police arrested them both. Steigerwalt said that neither Arredondo nor Martinez could provide proof of ownership of the van, which had a fake temporary license plate on the back. 
Steigerwalt said that Arredondo had a crack pipe in his possession when he was arrested. Neither of the men spoke English. 
After testimony from Steigerwalt and the owner of the van, attorney Jennifer Barrera, who was representing Martinez, moved to challenge the charges on grounds of probable cause. 
She said that Martinez should not be facing felony theft charges, but a “joyriding charge at most,” arguing that prosecutors failed to prove he knowingly stole the vehicle. She said that the owner of the white van “wasn’t able to say they stole it, that either one took it, just that they had it, and were allowed to have it.” 
The owner testified during the hearing that he did not know either Martinez or Arredondo, and said he did not give them permission to have the truck. 
Barrera said that there was no proof given that Martinez knew that Arredondo was going to take the red truck, nor proof that the tools taken from the third vehicle were stolen and not borrowed. 
She said that the “owner of the red truck is not here” and that “we don’t know” if they had permission to take the truck or not. 
Prosecutor Emily Todoran insisted that the “state has established probable cause” through the warrants that the two men were in “knowing possession of the stolen vehicle.” 
Still, Todd remained skeptical, suggesting the van could have been pawned off to the two men. 
The Nashville District Attorney&#8217;s office declined to comment when asked if it moved to refile the case after Todd&#8217;s dismissal.
Police say that Martinez and 31-year-old Adrian Diaz were stealing tools out of Carney’s truck when he confronted him, whereupon they hit Carney with their truck.
Diaz was arrested on July 10 and charged with evading arrest and drug possession. He had previously been deported four times and has multiple criminal convictions in Indiana and Tennessee.

Self-proclaimed neo-nazis recently demonstrated in Nashville, Tennessee, sparking outrage and prompting condemnations from local leaders and members of the Jewish community.
One neo-nazi protester from Canada was charged with felony aggravated assault and disorderly conduct after <a href="https://www.wkrn.com/news/local-news/nashville/neo-nazi-protester-arrested-for-assaulting-nashville-bartender-with-flag-police/">striking</a> a 19-year-old in the ribs and in the face with a flagpole. The incident happened when 15 to 20 neo-nazi demonstrators assembled on Broadway in downtown Nashville.
“Chief John Drake condemned the hate being spread by the Neo-Nazi group,” Metro police said in a statement. “He expressed his appreciation to the MNPD officers who spent their late afternoon/early evening monitoring the group’s activities,” it went on to say.
“I want to say to these visitors from out of town: You are not welcome here,” Council Member at Large Zulfat Suara <a href="https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/article-810898">said</a>. “Nashville government condemns all forms of hate, and when you come for one of us, you’re coming for all of us, and we continue to stand together for Nashvillians.”
Nashville Metropolitan Police Department Chief John Drake explained that the group is believed to be operating out of a rental property in Kentucky. Chief Drake also noted that police officers monitored the demonstrations by the neo-nazi group in order to prevent altercations between them and passerbys.
“Even Nazi speech is protected under the United States Constitution,” Drake said while also assuring that police would step in if members of the group engaged in any illegal activity. He also advised members of the public to avoid interacting with the group, explaining that they were filming videos to use in propaganda.
Nashville Jewish Federation CEO Rabbi Dan Horowitz condemned the organization’s rally and called on local law enforcement to enforce laws against parades without permits, wearing masks for disguise on public property, and littering at a Nashville City Council meeting on Tuesday.
“We have been warning our local and state elected officials to act, and thus far, insufficient action has been taken to enforce our current laws,” the Horowitz’s organization said on social media. “We very much appreciate the efforts of law enforcement to disrupt these activities to the extent possible, and we now call on our elected officials to use the full force and effect of our local and state laws.”
