For much of the last decade, Pride month in Major League Baseball looked like an unstoppable corporate and cultural wave. More teams hosted dedicated nights, rainbow merchandise filled stores, and front offices rolled out pregame spectacles, partnerships with activist groups, and messaging that framed baseball as a vehicle for social progress.
Today, nearly every team still stages some version of a Pride event. Yet the surrounding conversation has shifted. What once appeared as inexorable expansion now looks more like adaptation — and, in places, retreat — as players, fans, and institutions negotiate the limits of institutional messaging in a divided country.
The story of Pride in baseball is no longer one of unbroken conquest. It is one of boundaries being tested and, increasingly, redrawn. 
The earliest LGBTQ-themed events in professional baseball were small and localized. In 1998, the Florida Marlins hosted a &#8220;Gay Day&#8221; tied to local community groups. Two years later, in 2000, the Los Angeles Dodgers organized what became widely recognized as the first major professional sports Pride Night. It followed an incident in which a lesbian couple was ejected from Dodger Stadium for kissing; the team responded with apologies and ticket giveaways to advocacy organizations.
The Chicago Cubs launched their annual &#8220;Out at Wrigley&#8221; events in <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/2021/08/20/out-at-wrigley-celebrates-the-20th-anniversary-of-its-trendsetting-gay-day-sunday/">2001</a>. For years these remained exceptions, while most clubs stayed focused on baseball.
Everything accelerated after 2015, as corporate America aligned with Pride branding following the Obergefell decision. Major League clubs followed suit. Commissioner Rob Manfred&#8217;s office brought in former player Billy Bean as an inclusion ambassador. Clubs formed partnerships with local LGBTQ organizations. Pride Nights moved from occasional experiments to annual fixtures on team calendars.
By the early 2020s, 29 of 30 teams hosted some form of Pride event. Only the Texas Rangers consistently declined. The peak arrived in 2021, when the San Francisco Giants became the first club to integrate Pride colors directly into on-field caps and uniforms. Across the league, rainbow logos, specialty jerseys, drag performances, fireworks shows, and themed concessions became standard promotional fare. Pride Month ranked among baseball&#8217;s biggest off-field initiatives.

In 2023, the Dodgers infamously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/l-a-dodgers-will-honor-drag-group-mocking-catholics-sisters-of-perpetual-indulgence">invited</a> the Catholic-mocking Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence to receive a community service award on Pride Night. The team rescinded the invitation after backlash from religious groups and leaders, but the LGBT backlash to the backlash won out, resulting in the group ultimately being <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/boycott-the-dodgers-catholic-bishops-finally-fighting-back-against-anti-catholic-hate-group">reinvited</a>.
Even at the height of visibility, resistance surfaced. In 2022, several Tampa Bay Rays players declined to wear rainbow-themed logos, citing religious convictions. <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/dodgers-clayton-kershaw-displays-bible-passage-hat-during-pride-night">Similar</a> <a href="https://www.espn.com/nhl/story/_/id/35470032/flyers-ivan-provorov-boycotts-pride-night-cites-religion">defections</a> emerged across sports. Leagues faced a new question: How far could corporate branding extend when it conflicted with players&#8217; personal beliefs?
MLB did not eliminate Pride Nights. Instead, the league adjusted its approach. Commissioner Robert Manfred <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7389053/2026/06/24/mlb-pride-nights-giants-manfred/">explained</a> the goal was to avoid placing players &#8220;in an uncomfortable position.&#8221; Specialty on-field uniforms and mandatory rainbow elements became more restricted. Responsibility shifted back toward individual clubs. The emphasis moved toward optional ticket packages, giveaways, and fan experiences rather than compelling player participation.
The changed landscape was clear throughout this most recent Pride Month. Twenty-nine teams still hosted Pride Nights, complete with rainbow jerseys, caps, concerts, themed concessions, and community events. The Orioles distributed 15,000 Pride jerseys. The Blue Jays created interactive spaces inside Rogers Centre. The Dodgers, Mets, Cubs, Giants, Mariners, and many others ran large-scale celebrations. The Rangers again stood apart, choosing a Faith and Family Night instead.
But the defining controversy of 2026 was no longer whether these events would occur. It was how much players themselves were required to endorse them. During the Giants&#8217; Pride Night, pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Ryan Walker wrote the biblical reference &#8220;Genesis 9:12-16&#8221; on their rainbow-logo caps. The passage recounts God&#8217;s covenant with Noah and presents the rainbow as a divine sign. Critics called it a protest. Supporters saw it as an expression of faith.
MLB issued verbal <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7364268/2026/06/15/sf-giants-pride-night-caps-bible-verses-mlb-warning/">warnings</a> — not for the content of the message, the league insisted, but for altering uniforms in violation of collectively bargained rules. No fines followed. Manfred later <a href="https://www.mlb.com/news/commissioner-rob-manfred-responds-to-letter-from-senator-josh-hawley">confirmed</a> the players &#8220;were neither fined nor disciplined, nor will they ever be,&#8221; while stressing that uniform policy remains content-neutral.
The episode drew <a href="https://www.hawley.senate.gov/mlb-backs-down-pledges-no-punishment-for-religious-beliefs-in-reply-to-hawley/">attention</a> from Senator Josh Hawley and reignited what seems to be an evergreen debate in the Pride era over religious expression versus corporate messaging.

Despite the wins this year, Pride Nights remain embedded in 29 of 30 promotional calendars. Attendance for these specific nights is difficult to track, but these individual clubs seem to view them as effective business tools. However, what conservatives can hang their hat on is that the confidence that once surrounded Pride has faltered at MLB itself.
The league now stresses player choice, limits certain forms of on-field messaging, and lets clubs adapt events to local realities. The era of treating players as default ambassadors for left-wing causes has receded. Conversations that once centered on expansion now focus on boundaries — between inclusion and compulsion, corporate branding, and personal conscience.
This evolution offers conservatives a practical roadmap rather than an abstract complaint.
First, support alternatives that already exist. The Rangers&#8217; Faith and Family Night demonstrates that teams can prioritize unifying themes rooted in faith, family, and community without defaulting to identity-focused programming. Fans and sponsors can and should reward teams that offer genuine choice. The San Diego Padres <a href="https://www.mlb.com/padres/tickets/specials/faith-family-night">hosted</a> a Faith and Family Night, as <a href="https://www.mlb.com/astros/tickets/faith">did</a> the Houston Astros; the Arizona Diamondbacks will host theirs in <a href="https://www.mlb.com/dbacks/tickets/concerts/faith-family-night">August</a>, and <a href="https://www.mlb.com/mariners/tickets/specials/faith-and-family">so will</a> the Seattle Mariners — among many other teams. I encourage you to go out to those games and pack the house to show your team what you support. 
Second, champion content-neutral rules and player autonomy. The Manfred policy shift, however imperfect and mealy-mouthed it may be, represents a victory for the principle that no player should be forced to wear or endorse political or social symbols. The Faith and Family Nights mentioned above do not force players to participate, and neither should Pride Nights. Conservatives should defend and expand these guardrails across sports, insisting that uniform and player participation rules apply equally regardless of the message.
Third, leverage market and cultural pressure. Baseball&#8217;s <a href="https://votehub.com/2026/01/20/the-political-lean-of-pro-sports/">relatively conservative</a> player base gives it an advantage other leagues lack. When players push back on conscience grounds as the Rays did in 2022 and the Giants pitchers did in 2026, the response should be vocal public support. Attendance, merchandise sales, and sponsorship decisions remain powerful signals. Fortunately, this seems to be already proving its worth.
Fourth, focus on merit and unity over identity. Sports thrive when they celebrate excellence, competition, and shared traditions rather than importing divisive cultural battles. Conservatives can promote heritage, patriotism, military appreciation, and family-focused events that bring people together without requiring ideological conformity.
Fifth, engage politically where necessary. Episodes like the Giants controversy show that elected officials and public scrutiny can influence league behavior. Sustained attention to religious liberty and free expression in professional sports keeps the leagues honest.
Pride Month is not vanishing from MLB, much like in the culture at large. But the version that once seemed destined to dominate every uniform and every broadcast has encountered <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/the-truth-behind-the-disappearing-rainbow-logos">real limits</a>. The league that once placed players at the center of social messaging has moved toward keeping those conversations in the concourse, not on the field.
The lesson of the past several years is simple: Cultural momentum is not irreversible. Institutions still respond to incentives, players still retain agency, and fans still have a voice. Baseball&#8217;s Pride era is no longer defined by relentless expansion but by negotiation and limits. Whether that trend continues will depend less on commissioners and front offices than on the people who buy the tickets, fill the stadiums, and ultimately decide what kind of game they want to support.

The team also bragged that a drag queen performer dubbed &#8220;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/heidincloset/">Heidi N Closet</a>&#8221; will be at the game, featured as a &#8220;guest splasher.&#8221;
At Orioles home games, there&#8217;s a section called the Bird Bath Splash Zone where a character named &#8220;Mr. Splash&#8221; sprays fans with a hose when the Orioles nab extra-base hits. This is typically promoted as a family-friendly event. As the guest splasher, the drag queen will apparently be spraying fans.

Two weeks ago, the San Francisco Giants held a &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; where players were pressured to wear LGBT rainbow-colored Giants caps. When some of the Christian players counter-signaled the event by adding Bible verses to their hats, the MLB gave them a &#8220;warning,&#8221; sparking outrage from some MLB fans and public officials.
Still, the MLB is moving forward with &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; events. Aside from the scheduled Baltimore &#8220;Pride Night,&#8221; the New York Mets will hold a &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; of their own on Friday, too. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Athletics, and the St. Louis Cardinals similarly held these LGBT-themed games.
The Giants &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; notably featured a drag queen and 10 same-sex couples renewing their vows on the field.

San Francisco Giants leaders are refusing to speak ill of the Christian players who counter-signaled the team&#8217;s LGBT &#8220;Pride Night.&#8221;
Reporters on Tuesday night pressed San Fran manager Tony Vitello about the recent &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; fiasco, where players were pressured to wear gay pride rainbow-logo hats. When a reporter suggested Vitello was somehow disrespected by Christian ball players who added Bible verses to their hats, he refuted the journalist.
The reporter argued that because the Christian players didn&#8217;t tell Vitello they were going to write on their hats, it was an act of &#8220;disrespect to the manager.&#8221;
&#8220;I don&#8217;t see that as a disrespect to me to be honest with you,&#8221; Vitello responded, adding that what would be disrespectful in his view would be players not giving it their all on the field for their teammates. &#8220;I have not been disrespected in this role, at all.&#8221;

Buster Posey, the Giants&#8217; president of baseball operations, also shared a vague statement about the Christian players, and then refused to answer questions about anything other than &#8220;baseball.&#8221;
“I’d like to recognize that the organization has shared its response to &#8216;Pride Night,&#8217; and I understand that there’s strong feelings on this topic,” Posey said, before taking questions from the media. “There’s differing perspectives, and out of respect to everybody involved, it’s not something that I’m going to revisit.”
Reporters continued to press Posey about the Christian players, stressing that they believe the LGBT community is vital to the San Fran area. Posey, time after time, told the press that he&#8217;d only take &#8220;baseball questions.&#8221;

The response online was generally positive from apolitical and conservative X users, who criticized the media. However, as California-based civil liberties attorney Laura Powell highlighted, the controversy started because the Giants chose to host a &#8220;Pride Night.&#8221;

Powell also noted the LGBT flags at the stadium, commenting on how &#8220;captured&#8221; the organization has become.

Major League Baseball backed down Monday after threatening several San Francisco Giants players over Bible verses marked on their Pride Night caps, promising not to fine or discipline them for expressing their Christian faith.
<a href="https://x.com/HawleyMO/status/2069180415668326784?s=20">In a letter</a> to Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.), MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred said the league was enforcing existing rules and blamed the San Francisco Giants for a controversy that quickly became a religious-liberty flashpoint.
“By warning the Giants players that they may not include Bible verses on their caps in the future, MLB was not discriminating or chastising those players based on their religious beliefs; rather, MLB was enforcing (with only an oral warning) a long-standing, collectively bargained rule that keeps uniforms clean and avoids controversy,” Manfred said. 
Manfred explained that the MLB allows clubs to wear customized uniforms during just 12 league-sanctioned events each year, including Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Independence Day, Sept. 11, and Jackie Robinson Day.
However, Manfred said individual clubs retain the flexibility to recognize other commemorative events throughout the season. He noted that in 2023, the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers successfully requested that their use of Pride emblems on uniforms and hats during Pride Night be grandfathered in under the league’s policy.
“Los Angeles and San Francisco are homes to some of the largest LGBTQ communities in the United States, and those clubs desired to show their appreciation and support for those communities,” Manfred explained, acknowledging that not everyone is on board. 
“We understand that some players or other on-field personnel have not been comfortable wearing the pride emblem on their uniform based on their religious beliefs,&#8221; he added.  
During Pride Night, San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Landen Roupp was among them. He inscribed a passage from Genesis 9 on his cap in silver, placing it next to the rainbow logo.
The verses describe God’s promise to Noah and all future generations that he would never again destroy the earth with a flood, with the rainbow serving as the sign of that covenant.
An article in The Athletic sharply criticized the players’ decision, arguing that the Bible verses “missed the point” of Pride Night and helped fuel calls for MLB to crack down on Christian expressions during an event that was “supposed to be dedicated to support and belonging.”
After the game, Roupp stood his ground, saying the Biblical gestures reflected his moral convictions. 
“The rainbow is a symbol of God’s covenant with us, and we as believers stand firm in that … There’s no hate at all,” he told reporters. “It’s just what I stand for and what I stand in, I believe in God.”
Shortly thereafter, MLB issued a verbal warning advising players not to include Bible verses on their uniforms in the future, triggering a wave of conservative backlash, including legal scrutiny from elected officials and state attorneys general.
“The Civil Rights Act prohibits MLB and its franchises from unreasonably burdening the rights of players with religious objections to serving as the League’s vehicle for pro-Pride messages,” Assistant Attorney General Dhillon<a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/2067709644185759938"> wrote</a> in a letter to Manfred.
In a response to Hawley&#8217;s scathing letter, Manfred appeared to deflect blame to the San Francisco Giants.  
“Unfortunately, this year the Giants&#8217; communication with players was inadequate and not clear. Some players apparently did not understand that they had the option to wear their normal uniform and elected to add messages to their hats bearing the pride logo as a result,” he explained. “After the game had concluded, my office issued a routine oral warning about the uniform policy violation &#8211; unfortunately, it was issued before we became aware of the Giants’ lapse in communication,” 
In a win for the conservatives, the MLB vowed that no players would be punished for the Bible verses.
“The players were neither fined nor disciplined, nor will they ever be,” Manfield said.

The Trump administration will probe whether Major League Baseball is discriminating against Christian players who pushed back against “Pride” month messaging.
Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon told MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred on Thursday that the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission will investigate the league for religious discrimination. The notification came after the league warned several players who wrote Bible verses on the “Pride” caps they were issued for a game. 
“The Civil Rights Act prohibits MLB and its franchises from unreasonably burdening the rights of players with religious objections to serving as the League&#8217;s vehicle for pro-Pride messages,” Dhillon <a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/2067709644185759938">wrote</a> in a letter to Manfred.
Dhillon suggested that she did not buy the MLB’s claims that they only warned the players because of a policy against writing on uniform equipment.  
“Yet, MLB has allowed players to wear uniform patches reading ‘Black Lives Matter.’ This double standard — under which players may not inscribe Bible verses on hats for one game only but may wear ‘Black Lives Matter’ patches for one game only — calls MLB&#8217;s true motives into question and raises serious concerns about MLB&#8217;s compliance with Title VII,” Dhillon wrote.

The controversy started last week when San Francisco Giants starting pitcher <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/giants-pitcher-refuses-to-hide-christian-faith-during-pride-night">Landen Roupp</a> wrote a Bible passage found in Genesis onto his cap, right next to the LGBT-themed rainbow logo he was directed to wear. Fellow players JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker also added Bible verses to their caps. 
MLB’s Chief Communications Officer Pat Courtney told The Athletic on Monday that these players have been “warned” about “future violations.” He said that writing on the team’s baseball caps “violates our rules.”
Those warnings spurred backlash from elected officials who argued the MLB was targeting Christians. 
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter to Manfred asking him to provide further detail about the league’s policies. 
“The freedom to live out one’s faith does not end at the ballpark gate. Americans of every creed are entitled to confidence that the institutions of our national pastime will not single out religious expression for punishment while celebrating messages of the league’s own choosing,” he said. 
Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said that the MLB should expect to be hearing from his office “soon.”

Major League Baseball issued a statement on Tuesday trying to downplay its clear targeting of Christian players on the San Francisco Giants who rejected a recent LGBT &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; game.
After the MLB boasted to The Athletic, a subsidiary of the New York Times, that a handful of Christian players have been &#8220;warned&#8221; about writing Bible verses on their baseball caps, the league issued a follow-up statement on Tuesday.
“To be clear, this routine verbal warning not to wear the hat in future games is not disciplinary and had absolutely nothing to do with the content of the message,&#8221; the MLB said, according to sports broadcaster Blake Niemann. &#8220;We respect players’ right to free expression. However, writing of any kind, with any message, is prohibited per Major League Baseball’s Uniform Regulations.&#8221;
The statement seemed to come in response to mounting backlash the league was receiving for singling out the handful of players who counter-signaled or rejected the LGBT rainbow-themed baseball caps for a &#8220;Pride Night&#8221; event. As highlighted by The Daily Wire, Giants starting pitcher <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/giants-pitcher-refuses-to-hide-christian-faith-during-pride-night">Landen Roupp</a> etched a Bible passage found in Genesis on the cap. Other players, JT Brubaker and Ryan Walker, followed suit, standing up for their Christian faith and also adding Bible verses. &#8220;The writing on the cap violates our rules, and consistent with normal practice we have warned the players about future violations,&#8221; the MLB said on Monday.
The Giants also issued a statement that championed &#8220;inclusion&#8221; and apologized for the team&#8217;s Christian players apparently hurting the LGBT community: “We understand that the choices by individual players have caused pain and anger to many in the LGBTQ+ community and we are sorry for that,&#8221; the team said.
MLB fans and political commentators don&#8217;t seem to be buying the league&#8217;s latest spin. Notably, the MLB faced backlash in 2023 after the Los Angeles Dodgers honored the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence — a drag group that mocks Catholicism — during the team&#8217;s &#8220;Pride Night.&#8221; It was also uncovered earlier this year that a Washington Nationals executive said the team avoided featuring pitcher Trevor Williams on social media because of his outspoken Catholic faith.
The MLB also went all-in on the Black Lives Matter movement, allowing BLM patches and messages on uniforms, displaying BLM-themed logos on fields, and promoting player-led campaigns against racism. In 2021, the league even moved its All-Star Game from Atlanta over a voter ID law the league apparently viewed as racist.

Missouri Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is demanding answers, too. &#8220;What does MLB think it’s doing penalizing players for their Christian faith? They owe us some answers. Right now,&#8221; he wrote on X.
The post captions a letter asking MLB Commissioner Robert Manfred about the apparent discrimination. Demanding answers by June 19, Hawley asks for information on &#8220;[a]ny policy, directive, or expectation-formal or informal governing whether players are required, encouraged, or expected to wear Pride Night caps, jerseys, or other themed apparel, and whether a player who declines to do so faces any consequence beyond the league&#8217;s written rules, including in playing time, roster or assignment decisions, club media and promotion, or standing within the organization.&#8221;
He also asks for information on &#8220;[a]ll approvals, authorizations, or directives by which the league created, permitted, or arranged the display of &#8216;Black Lives Matter,&#8217; &#8216;United for Change,&#8217; or comparable messaging on jerseys, mounds, or equipment, and any guidance by which the league relaxed its equipment rules to allow players to display social or political messages.&#8221;
The senator ended the letter with the following message: &#8220;The freedom to live out one&#8217;s faith does not end at the ballpark gate. Roupp inscribed a Bible passage from Genesis 9 on his cap. The verses describe God’s promise to Noah and all future generations that he would never again destroy the earth with a flood, with the rainbow serving as the sign of that covenant:

A Washington Nationals executive was fired this week after he claimed on a hidden-camera video that an outspoken Christian pitcher was excluded from some of the team&#8217;s promotional content because of his religious views.
The Nationals fired Sean Hudson, its director of community relations, after undercover journalist James O&#8217;Keefe posted a video showing Hudson admit to blacklisting pitcher Trevor Williams from the team&#8217;s social media content.
&#8220;One of our pitchers, Trevor Williams, he is very Catholic,&#8221; Hudson said on the hidden camera video.
The former Nationals executive then provided an example of why he avoided featuring Williams for the team&#8217;s promotional content.
&#8220;The Dodgers had a group out to the stadium who were drag queens who sometimes dressed up as nuns. He went on social media [and wrote], ‘This is wrong. This is my religion. You all are mocking it.&#8217; Because of that, we don&#8217;t use him on social [media],&#8221; Hudson said.
The Los Angeles Dodgers were <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/l-a-dodgers-will-honor-drag-group-mocking-catholics-sisters-of-perpetual-indulgence">condemned</a> by Christians across the country, including multiple MLB players, for inviting the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, a drag queen group that mocks Jesus Christ and Christians, to perform at one of their games in 2023.
After Hudson was canned, Washington Nationals President of Business Operations Jason Sinnarajah went on live TV to <a href="https://x.com/JamesOKeefeIII/status/2060560136804954555">apologize</a> to Williams and the team&#8217;s Christian fans for Hudson&#8217;s remarks. He also said Hudson&#8217;s comments were false and &#8220;don&#8217;t reflect us as an organization, our values, who we are.&#8221;
&#8220;We took action right away, and [Hudson] is no longer employed by the team,&#8221; Sinnarajah added.
&#8220;We do not hide players from social media. Even just last week, we featured several players, including Trevor Williams, as part of their visit to the Museum of the Bible,&#8221; Sinnarajah <a href="https://x.com/JamesOKeefeIII/status/2060560136804954555">said</a>.
In the hidden-camera video, Hudson also talked about his disdain for War Secretary Pete Hegseth and said that he prevented some Nationals players from meeting Hegseth after they expressed interest in talking to the top Trump official when he attended a game.

One of the team&#8217;s social media stunts that Hudson claimed specifically excluded Williams was a video of Nationals players being asked whether a hot dog is a sandwich. Williams posted a photo on Instagram on Friday that appeared to reference Hudson&#8217;s comment about the hot dog video. The report, published Friday, tied Díaz to the federally banned blood sport through social media advertisements and promotional materials posted by cockfighting organizations on the island, including graphics showing the three-time All-Star in his Dodgers uniform promoting tournament events. One post reportedly advertised a “tribute” to Díaz, describing him as both a Puerto Rican sports hero and an active cockfighter.
The controversy deepened after a March interview with Puerto Rican newspaper El Nuevo Día resurfaced in which Díaz openly discussed his family’s participation in cockfighting events. According to the outlet, Díaz said his family entered four roosters into a recent tournament and described cockfighting as a hobby he had followed since childhood. 
“It’s a pastime I’ve followed since I was a child,” Díaz reportedly said. “Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here.”

Cockfighting has deep historical roots in Puerto Rico, where some residents continue to defend it as a cultural tradition dating back centuries. But that defense has not carried legal weight for years. The practice has been illegal in all U.S. states and territories since 2019, when a federal ban took effect. The Supreme Court later declined to hear a challenge that would have carved out an exception for Puerto Rico.
Federal law makes participation in a cockfight punishable by up to five years in prison and fines, while knowingly attending as a spectator can carry criminal penalties. No charges have been announced against Díaz, and neither the Dodgers nor his representatives responded publicly to the report as of Friday.

The roots of the animosity date back to 1990, when the A’s—then under the benevolent ownership of the Haas family—granted the Giants the rights to Santa Clara County to help them avoid a move out of state. Wolff contends these rights were conditional on the Giants actually moving to San Jose. When the Giants instead built Oracle Park in San Francisco, Wolff argues the territory should have reverted to shared status.
“The Giants’ position really, really messed us up in trying to even negotiate with Oakland,” Wolff told The Athletic. He described the subsequent MLB blue-ribbon panel, which spent years studying the issue without resolution, as a “cruel joke,” adding, “What I did not realize was that the amazing individuals comprising MLB … attract, employ or have around deceitful and dangerous sycophants. Not all, but some. And these sycophants assassinated the A’s!”
Giants chairman Greg Johnson has countered these claims, stating his responsibility is to protect his organization&#8217;s strength, noting that San Jose represents a massive portion of the Giants&#8217; fan base and revenue.
The current acrimony is the latest chapter in the history of one of baseball’s most nomadic yet storied franchises. Founded in 1901 as a charter member of the American League in Philadelphia, the Athletics were the original AL dynasty. Under legendary manager Connie Mack, who led the team for 50 years, the &#8220;A’s&#8221; won five World Series titles and adopted the &#8220;White Elephant&#8221; as a defiant logo after Giants manager John McGraw dismissed them as a &#8220;useless possession.&#8221;
In 1955, the team moved to Kansas City, an era largely remembered for owner Charlie Finley’s eccentric innovations—such as Kelly Green uniforms and a mule mascot—and a frustrating reputation as a &#8220;farm team&#8221; for the New York Yankees.
The 1968 move to Oakland sparked a modern renaissance. The &#8220;Swingin&#8217; A&#8217;s&#8221; of the 1970s won three consecutive World Series, followed by the &#8220;Bash Brothers&#8221; era of the late 80s and the &#8220;Moneyball&#8221; revolution of the early 2000s.
Yet despite winning nine World Series titles across three cities—trailing only the Yankees and Cardinals—the franchise has been plagued by stadium instability for decades.
Wolff’s memoir serves as a defense of his partner and current owner John Fisher, who has faced intense vilification from the Oakland faithful. While fans like Oakland 68’s president Jorge Leon blame ownership for &#8220;constant rebuilds&#8221; and a lack of investment, Wolff insists that &#8220;apathy&#8221; from local government and the Giants&#8217; &#8220;nasty opposition&#8221; left the club with no choice but to leave.
As the A&#8217;s play out their temporary residency in Sacramento, the wounds in Oakland remain deep. For a franchise born in Philadelphia and forged in the East Bay, the move to the desert represents the end of a 57-year Northern California legacy—one that Wolff insists was sabotaged by the neighbors across the bridge.

An apology seems to be in order.

On April 9, Mayor Zohran Mamdani stepped onto the field and wrapped his arms around Mrs. Met. Since that cold-blooded act of political affection, the Mets have gone 0-11. It’s as if the Mayor’s touch carried the same administrative efficiency he brings to City Hall, successfully grinding a <a href="https://www.wfmd.com/2026/04/18/new-york-mets-500-million-team-has-lost-10-games-in-a-row-after-zohran-mamdani-meeting/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">$507 million engine of hope</a> into a stationary pile of expensive scrap metal.

Statistically, Mamdani is the most effective defensive player in Major League Baseball history. Since he made contact with the mascot, the Mets have scored a pathetic 1.8 runs per game. He has managed to do what no opposing pitcher could: he neutralized Francisco Lindor, turned Bo Bichette’s bat into a decorative toothpick, and sent the team’s playoff odds off a cliff, plummeting from a confident 89% to an almost certainly too hopefuly 47%.
While the mayor might be used to managing deficits, this 11-game skid is a masterclass in bankruptcy. It takes a special kind of political talent to walk into a stadium and accidentally lobby for a 100% tax on hits, runs, and basic competence. Watching the Mets right now is like watching a city council meeting on a Tuesday morning: long, painful, and ending with everyone wondering where all the money went.
Even when the team tries to fight back, the &#8220;Mamdani Curse&#8221; lingers like a bad zoning law. Against the Cubs, the Mets <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/04/19/sports/mets-drop-11th-straight-in-nightmare-extra-inning-loss-to-cubs/">managed to go</a> 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. They aren&#8217;t just losing; they are failing with the kind of bureaucratic precision that suggests they’ve been ordered to stay in last place by the mayor&#8217;s office.
At this point, an apology may not be enough. For the sake of the city, the mayor needs to be banned from within 500 feet of Citi Field, and Mrs. Met needs to be dipped in holy water.
If Mamdani decides to hug the Statue of Liberty next, New Yorkers should expect the torch to go out and the harbor to freeze over by sunset.
The Mets have 27 outs to work with every game, and thanks to the mayor, they are treating every single one of them like a campaign promise: discarded, forgotten, and leaving the public in tears.
