Soccer star Lionel Messi announced his retirement from international soccer on Monday, just three weeks after his father died at 68 following a battle with illness.
Messi announced the decision via Instagram, sharing a photo of three handwritten pages that contained his full statement — which he said he&#8217;d originally penned on July 21, two days after his team&#8217;s heartbreaking loss to Spain in the World Cup Final.

When Lamine Yamal first burst onto the soccer scene in 2024, his father, Mounir Nasraoui, took to Instagram to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/C9AwXuKtlgB/?igsh=bjAyeW1nY2g1OWkx">post a baby picture</a> of his son — who, at the time, was playing with Spain’s national team during the UEFA European Championship.
“The beginning of two legends,” the caption read. The image was one of a handful taken during a 2007 photoshoot, and featured Messi holding an infant Yamal. Other photos from the same shoot were released to the public after Nasraoui’s post went viral.

In December of 2007, a charity raffle was created between Spanish local newspaper Diario Sport and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). Winners of the raffle would earn a slot with a professional soccer player from FC Barcelona for a photo that would appear in a promotional calendar.
Yamal’s family won the raffle, and they opted to pair their infant son with a 20-year-old Messi — before the fame and illustrious career. The photoshoot also features images that include Yamal&#8217;s mother, all taken at Camp Nou, FC Barcelona’s stadium. The same stadium is now home to Yamal, who has been in the program since he was seven years old — and is the very stadium where Messi blossomed into one of the greatest players of all time.
Freelance photographer Joan Monfort was responsible for the now-viral photos. In 2024, he was interviewed by The Athletic when the photoshoot originally blew up, and he said that he was just as shocked as the rest of the world.
“It’s something incredible,” Monfort said in 2024. “Back then, nobody could imagine that this baby would be who he is now – and you could have not known that Messi would become who he became, either. We are talking about 2007. Messi was only beginning at [Barcelona] then. Destiny plays an important role in these things.”
The World Cup final was set after Spain took down France 2-0 in the first semifinal game, making Yamal undefeated against the French in his young career through three matches. Messi and Argentina had to work a little harder, scoring two goals in seven minutes to come back and beat England 2-1 late in the match.
Yamal and Messi will soon compete on the biggest stage in their sport, fulfilling a storybook face-off 19 years in the making.

This game also featured the first weather delay, as lightning and wind in the area delayed the second half by an hour after France took a 1-0 lead into the break when the rain started to pour in.
When play finally resumed, France and Mbappé did not seem fazed by the long wait. After a miscommunication and a massive mistake by Iraq, Mbappé scored his 16th career World Cup goal and fourth this tournament. Another goal from fellow star Ousmane Dembélé secured the win for France.

Despite two goals on the other side from Ismaïla Sarr, Senegal lost its second straight group stage match, putting its hopes of advancing on life support.
After the domination from the stars, Algeria and Jordan took the pitch in the final game of the day in a back-and-forth affair. Jordan took a surprising lead after Nizar Al-Rashdan scored in the 36th minute. Algeria finally responded late in the second half, thanks to Nadhir Benbouali netting one in during the 69th minute, and Amine Gouiri scoring the game-winning goal for Algeria in the 82nd minute.
This loss eliminates Jordan from advancing to the knockout stage, but keeps Algeria alive as it is now tied with Austria in second place in Group J.

After securing a hat-trick in his country’s opening group stage match against Algeria last week, Messi skyrocketed from fourth place to a first-place tie for most career goals in the tournament’s history. He also became the first player to appear in six different World Cups for his country, with his first coming in 2006.

In the first game on Tuesday, France beat Senegal 3-1. After a surprisingly scoreless first half, the French phenom Mbappé scored the first goal of the match during the 66th minute, putting him at fourth all-time in World Cup goals. In Norway&#8217;s first appearance in the World Cup since 1998, Haaland stole the show. He scored the first two goals of the tournament for his country in a highly anticipated World Cup debut. While Iraq’s Aymen Hussein scored at the 39th minute between the two Norwegian goals, Norway was able to pull away with two goals, including an own goal from Hussein in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
The final match took place at midnight Eastern time, as Austria and Jordan faced off in San Francisco. Austria proved why they were the heavy favorite, winning 3-1 following a penalty kick goal by Marko Arnautovic in the 12th minute of added time in the second half to extend its lead back to two.

Soccer star Lionel Messi, 35, who is thought by some to be the greatest soccer player of all time, received a <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/sports/gunmen-threaten-lionel-messi-opening-fire-family-supermarket-were-waiting-for-you?intcmp=tw_fnc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">chilling threat</a> after police say two gunmen opened fire at a grocery owned by his wife’s family.
Two men reportedly fired at least a dozen shots at a Unico supermarket in Rosario, Argentina, Argentina’s third-largest city, early Thursday morning, police said. They left a message behind written on cardboard at the store owned by the family of Messi’s wife, Antonella Roccuzzo.
“Messi, we’re waiting for you. [Mayor Pablo] Javkin is also a drug trafficker, so he won’t take care of you,” the message stated.
Prosecutor Federico Rébola said a “preliminary” investigation into the incident had been launched. Javkin visited the crime scene after the incident and criticized federal authorities for their failure to stop violence related to drugs in Rosario.
“I doubt everyone, even those who are supposed to protect us,” he told reporters, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/messi-supermarket-attack-gunmen-rosario-bullets-ce420f9d5d0daa06c3faccb8838b32d9" target="_blank" rel="noopener">adding</a>, “Where are the ones who need to take care of us?&#8221;
