A clip of President Donald Trump from July 2022 is making the rounds on social media again as the WNBA&#8217;s transgender sports controversy boils over.
Speaking at the America First Policy Institute on July 26, 2022, the former president cracked that he’d be the &#8220;greatest woman&#8217;s basketball coach in history&#8221; by luring LeBron James into the WNBA.
“I&#8217;d be the greatest woman&#8217;s basketball coach in history,” Trump quipped.”Because I don&#8217;t like LeBron James. I like Michael Jordan much better. But I&#8217;d go up to LeBron James. It doesn&#8217;t matter. I&#8217;d say, ‘LeBron, did you ever have any desire to be a woman? Because what I&#8217;d love you to do is star on my team that I&#8217;m building up.’”
“I will have the greatest team in history,” he continued. “They&#8217;ll never lose. Nobody will come within 70 points of this team.&#8221;
The clip is going viral again after WNBA player Sophie Cunningham took a stand on keeping men out of women&#8217;s sports during an ESPN profile interview last month. Cunningham&#8217;s comments sparked backlash from WNBA coaches, players, and at least one co-owner.
Trump&#8217;s suggestion to bring James into the WNBA was part of a years-long feud between the president and the billionaire ballplayer.
The feud stretches back to September 2017, when Golden State Warriors sharp-shooter Steph Curry hesitated on a White House visit following the team&#8217;s NBA title. Trump formally revoked the invite, prompting James to jump into the paint and label the president a &#8220;bum,&#8221; declaring that visiting the White House was an honor &#8220;until you showed up!&#8221;

Trump wasted no time clapping back, famously tweeting that Lemon was &#8220;the dumbest man on television&#8221; who somehow &#8220;made LeBron look smart, which isn’t easy to do,&#8221; before declaring his loyalty to a different GOAT: &#8220;I like Mike!&#8221;

Pennsylvania Democratic Gov. Josh Shapiro, a potential 2028 presidential contender, suggested he may have played a role in bringing LeBron James to the Philadelphia 76ers after personally lobbying the NBA superstar to join the team months before the blockbuster signing. 
In an interview with Politico Playbook, Shapiro said he first met James at the private club ZZ&#8217;s in New York City and used the opportunity to pitch Philadelphia.
“I don’t want to suggest that I’m the reason why LeBron chose the Sixers, but when I saw him at this dinner in New York, I figured I had to shoot my shot,” Shapiro <a href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2026/07/31/josh-shapiro-shoots-his-shot-01018938">said</a>.
According to an anonymous source close to the governor cited by Playbook, Shapiro “was relentless until he finally got word&#8221; last Friday that James was headed to Philadelphia.
Minutes after NBA insider Shams Charania broke the news of the signing online, Shapiro celebrated on social media by proclaiming it &#8220;LeBron James Day&#8221; in Pennsylvania.

Shapiro also said he believes James can make an impact beyond basketball.
“I expect he’s going to bring a championship mentality to our team, and if he’s doing that in a way that also allows him to be a good father and husband, I think that’s great,” Shapiro said. 
Shapiro added that he “thought that there was a lot of important philanthropic work he could do in Philly.” 
James recently posted on social media about his new deal, saying he had briefly considered retirement before deciding to continue his career.

The NBA’s all-time leading scorer mentioned he seriously considered retirement after his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers. Now he aims to bring a fourth NBA Championship to Philadelphia. James signed the veteran minimum, a 2-year $8 million contract, ESPN&#8217;s Bobby Marks <a href="https://x.com/BobbyMarks42/status/2080678531902673161">reported</a>. The second year of the deal includes a player option, meaning James can opt out and potentially retire after this season.
This is not the only big-time move the 76ers made this offseason. Earlier this month, the Sixers traded for former NBA Finals MVP and Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown. James and Brown will join the already dynamic core in Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, and V.J. Edgecombe.
The entire league was waiting for the decision. The critics have a point — and so do the scientists.

The NBA and the national anthem have been embroiled in controversy for the better part of the last decade. In 2020, NBA players knelt during the anthem at the height of the BLM protests and riots.
In 2025, fans now claim LeBron James practiced his golf swing during the Star-Spangled Banner.
Before Sunday&#8217;s game between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Sacramento Kings, James was caught on <a href="https://x.com/BrickCenter_/status/2005370011565556113?s=20">camera</a> swinging his hips and arms as the anthem played in the background.
Sports commentator Craig Carton and other fans felt James was practicing his golf swing during the anthem. Carton called out James&#8217; behavior during Monday&#8217;s episode of The Craig Carton Show.
“If you wanna disregard your coach, and disregard your teammates &#8230; do it on your own time. Don&#8217;t do it during my national anthem,&#8221; Carton said.

Those incidents were head scratchers, but Sunday&#8217;s antics had pushback.
It adds to the longstanding rocky road between sports and the national anthem.
In 2016, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick first kneeled for the anthem in protest. James supported Kaepernick&#8217;s actions for years, even kneeling multiple times during the anthem himself.
During Sunday&#8217;s game, it didn&#8217;t appear that James was protesting the anthem. Instead, the 23-year NBA veteran simply wasn&#8217;t standing at attention like most everyone else in the arena.
Appearing to work on a golf swing at any point during an NBA game is a concern for Lakers fans. Lakers coach JJ Redick said in a recent interview that his team simply doesn&#8217;t care enough. James&#8217; close friend, Dwayne Wade, said his former teammate isn&#8217;t too concerned about his coach&#8217;s comments.
“LeBron is on his golf simulator right now,” Wade said.
It&#8217;s clear that James, like many Americans, loves golf. Maybe the backlash from Sunday&#8217;s swinging is enough for the NBA legend to rethink what he does during the two minutes it takes to honor the United States.

United States Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. said during a press conference on Thursday that gambling allegations point to &#8220;one of the most brazen sports corruption schemes since online sports betting became widely legalized in the United States.”
Before the Lakers played the Milwaukee Bucks on February 9, 2023, Jones texted a co-conspirator to place a bet on the Bucks because he knew that the Lakers would be missing a key player, according to the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2025/10/23/nyregion/nba-betting-scheme-indictment.html">indictment</a>. The indictment referred to the Lakers player only as &#8220;Player 3,&#8221; but given the details provided and James&#8217;s absence from the February 9, 2023, game, it&#8217;s apparent that &#8220;Player 3&#8221; is James.
&#8220;By virtue of his relationship with Player 3, the Lakers and other NBA personnel, the defendant DAMON JONES had access to non-public information, including medical information that had not been released to the public,&#8221; the indictment reads. Jones was a former teammate and coach of James when the NBA star was playing for the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Before the Lakers played the Bucks in 2023, Jones is accused of texting his inside knowledge of non-public medical information to an unnamed co-conspirator, writing, &#8220;Get a big bet on Milwaukee tonight before the information is out! [Player 3] is out tonight. Bet enough so Djones can eat to [sic] now!!!&#8221;

When Jones allegedly provided that information to the co-conspirator, James had not yet been ruled out on the injury report, but he would later be sidelined due to a lower-body injury, according to the indictment. James <a href="https://www.nba.com/news/lebron-james-ankle-out-vs-bucks">missed</a> the game against the Bucks due to ankle soreness, and the Bucks went on to win.
In another Lakers game a year later, Jones claimed to have learned that &#8220;Player 4&#8221; for the Lakers would likely be limited in his playing time or would not play well because of an injury, the indictment read. Jones was allegedly paid $2,500 by co-defendant Marves Fairley for the information. Fairley then placed a bet worth around $100,000 against the Lakers at a retail sportsbook, according to the indictment.
After Jones had given out the information, the NBA injury report listed &#8220;Player 4&#8221; as &#8220;probable,&#8221; but it was not publicly reported that he would potentially play a limited number of minutes. Anthony Davis was the only player <a href="https://ak-static.cms.nba.com/referee/injury/Injury-Report_2024-01-15_07PM.pdf">listed</a> as &#8220;probable&#8221; on the NBA&#8217;s injury report for January 15, 2024. Davis ended up playing his normal number of minutes and scored 27 points in a Lakers win over the Oklahoma City Thunder, causing Fairley to ask Jones to pay him back. Jones allegedly doubled down, arguing in text messages that the information he received was credible.
