In a striking press conference on Friday, Portland Police Chief Bob Day admitted that the Department of Homeland Security was correct about a shooting involving alleged Tren de Aragua gang members &#8212; before Day broke down in tears about having to share the truth with the public.
Per DHS, two people were injured in a shooting on Thursday when a Border Patrol agent fired a defensive shot while conducting a targeted stop on a vehicle carrying two people allegedly affiliated with the Tren de Aragua gang. &#8220;When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents,&#8221; DHS said in a statement.
Police Chief Day admitted those involved in the shooting were indeed tied to TDA, a brutal Venezuela-based gang.
&#8220;What I can say is there is an association with the two folks yesterday and TDA,&#8221; Day admitted. &#8220;I hesitated to even share this information initially because I&#8217;m very aware of the historic injustice of victim-blaming oftentimes portrayed by law enforcement, including this very agency.&#8221;
&#8220;Historically, we have not been quick to disclose the potential criminal history of others, but I felt it was imperative because I was asked yesterday in the news conference what information we have,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;This is information we have. This in no way draws a through-line to the actions or the behaviors that occurred yesterday.&#8221;
Then, breaking down in tears, Day addressed the &#8220;Latino community.&#8221;
&#8220;It saddens &#8212; it saddens me that we even have to qualify these remarks,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Because I understand, or at least have attempted to understand through your voices, your concern, your fear, your anger &#8212; this information in no way meant to disparage or to condone or support or agree with any of the actions that occurred yesterday.&#8221;
The police chief added that it&#8217;s &#8220;important that we stay committed to the rule of law, that we stay committed to the facts, that we stay &#8230; trustworthy and legitimate.&#8221;

Journalist Andy Ngo underscored on X the city and state leadership&#8217;s commitment to condemning federal authorities, instead of reiterating the facts involved in the case from the start.
&#8220;The entire city and state leadership, all run by Democrats, organized an emergency press conference to condemn the federal agents, reject DHS&#8217; statement and to express support with the violent suspects, who they called the &#8216;victims,'&#8221; Ngo said. &#8220;Local and national media also misled the public about the shooting. Anti-ICE demonstrations are expected across the nation this weekend, following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good.
The Department of Homeland Security says the officer who fatally shot Good did so in self-defense, not just for himself, but for other officers, too.
&#8220;In a split-second decision, our ICE officer acted dutifully to save his own life and the lives of his fellow officers,&#8221; DHS said. &#8220;This was an act of domestic terrorism by an anti-ICE agitator.&#8221;
Footage taken by the ICE officer appears to show Good&#8217;s wife encouraging her to drive away as the feds were instructing her to exit her vehicle. In another video, Good&#8217;s wife could be heard saying, &#8220;I made her come down here. It’s my fault.&#8221;

‘You Better F*cking Run!’: Police Chief Chased By Anti-ICE Protesters In Minneapolis

Jonathan Gerlach, a 34-year-old Pennsylvania man, was arrested on Tuesday after vandalizing a cemetery — only later did police discover human remains in his basement and storage unit, including more than 100 skulls, several long bones, mummified feet, and decomposing torsos.
The <a href="https://x.com/FOXLA/status/2009736991189979136">arrest</a> follows a months-long investigation of burglaries at graves and mausoleums. From November 7 to early January, 26 underground vaults and mausoleums were broken into or damaged, according to a probable cause affidavit.
Surveillance footage from Mount Moriah Cemetery on January 6 shows the suspect&#8217;s car with “numerous bones and skulls in plain view in the back seat,” Delaware County District Attorney Tanner Rouse said. From there, police observed Gerlach leaving the cemetery with a crowbar and a burlap bag filled with the skeletal remains of two small children, skulls, and other bones. He was taken into custody and, according to police, confessed to stealing roughly 30 sets of human remains. Authorities say a Monster drink was also found nearby and was later processed for DNA and fingerprints.
It is still unclear what Gerlach was doing with the bones, Rouse noted, some of which were more than a century old.
“Very simply, detectives have recovered an awful lot of bones at this point, and we are still trying to piece together who they are, where they are from, and how many we are looking at, and it’s going to be quite some time before we have a final answer,” Rouse said.
He called the sight &#8220;horrific,&#8221; adding, “Detectives walked into a horror movie come to life in that home.”
Yeadon Borough Police Chief Henry Giammarco also said it was one of the worst things he had witnessed in his 30-year career. &#8220;When people are laid to rest, that&#8217;s important,&#8221; he added. &#8220;The remains, they&#8217;re so old, but still, when they lived, they had a life, they mattered. It was important to us to get justice, and that&#8217;s working with the DA&#8217;s office. Hopefully justice will be served.&#8221;
Gerlach is charged with more than 300 counts, including 100 counts each of abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, multiple counts of desecrating a public monument, desecrating a venerated object, desecrating a historic burial place, burglary, trespassing, and theft. He is also accused of stealing jewelry, possibly taken from human remains.
He is jailed on a $1 million bond with no lawyer listed in court records, and an arraignment hearing is scheduled for January 20.

Nearly seven months before a federal immigration officer opened fire on a woman accused of trying to ram him with her car, he was brutally dragged by an illegal immigrant sex offender he was trying to take off the streets.
The Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer opened fire Wednesday as a woman said to be blocking a road they were attempting to pass through didn&#8217;t get out of her car, as the federal agents instructed, before she reversed her vehicle and pulled forward. One video appeared to show the ICE officer, who has more than ten years of experience, fatally shooting the woman after her vehicle made contact with him.
The Trump administration has defended the ICE officer&#8217;s actions, saying the woman, who has since been identified as 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, &#8220;weaponized&#8221; her vehicle to plow down the agent.
Democratic politicians, however, have accused the ICE officer of &#8220;murdering&#8221; Good. And protestors have formed angry mobs in Minneapolis to display their outrage with the ICE officer&#8217;s response.

In June, that same ICE officer was the victim of a brutal assault where he was dragged roughly 100 yards down a Minnesota street as he was chasing down an illegal immigrant convicted of &#8220;repeatedly sexually abusing his 16-year-old stepdaughter,&#8221; <a href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.mnd.225947/gov.uscourts.mnd.225947.1.1.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to court documents.
At the time, the ICE officer made multiple attempts to deescalate the situation and give the suspect a chance to comply with his orders, the court documents reveal.
Guatemalan illegal immigrant Roberto Carlos Munoz was out in the community after local authorities flouted a federal detainer and released him from custody.
Federal agents waited for Munoz to pull out of his driveway at his home in Bloomington, Minnesota, before pulling him over, according to the court documents. The ICE officer pulled diagonally in front of Munoz&#8217;s vehicle as an FBI agent turned on his lights to prompt him to pull over.
That forced him to stop.
The ICE officer, alongside the FBI agent, then pulled behind the illegal immigrant&#8217;s vehicle, approached him, and identified themselves as federal law enforcement. The ICE officer was also donning a patch that read &#8220;POLICE&#8221; on his vest.
The officers had their weapons drawn as a precaution since Munoz initially refused to pull over.
When Munoz raised his hands, the ICE officer holstered his gun while the FBI agent kept his out, but aimed it down.
The ICE officer walked up to Munoz&#8217;s window and ordered him in both English and Spanish to put the car in park.
Munoz failed to do so and instead rolled his window a third of the way down. At that point, the ICE officer asked him for identification, which Munoz held up to the window.
After that, Munoz placed his car in park. The ICE officer asked Munoz to roll his window all the way, which he refused to do.

That&#8217;s when the ICE officer pulled out his taser and pointed it at Munoz&#8217;s chest. Still, Munoz refused to lower the window fully and didn&#8217;t comply with orders to open the car door.
The ICE officer warned Munoz in both English and Spanish that he would break the window if he continued to ignore him. The illegal immigrant continued to dig in his heels, forcing the ICE officer to break the rear driver&#8217;s side window &#8220;to avoid covering Munoz in broken glass.&#8221;
The ICE officer then reached into the car and tried to unlock the driver&#8217;s side door as he continued pointing the taser at Munoz.
While the ICE officer&#8217;s arm was in the car, Munoz proceeded to put the car in drive before turning the wheel to the right to go around the vehicle in front of him and driving onto a curb, accelerating rapidly.
As Munoz proceeded &#8220;at a high rate of speed,&#8221; the ICE officer was dragged along with his arm stuck in the car.
That led the ICE officer to fire his taser at Munoz. Despite being struck twice with the electric charge, Munoz &#8220;was undeterred&#8221; and continued driving away as the ICE officer &#8220;screamed.&#8221;
Munoz then began weaving his vehicle in an attempt to shake the ICE officer away. The officer was ultimately able to break free when Munoz got off the curb and returned to the street where they were initially situated.
The illegal immigrant continued to flee. Authorities were eventually able to arrest Munoz, <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/06/18/dhs-announces-arrest-illegal-alien-child-sex-offender-who-dragged-ice-officer" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Department of Homeland Security.
The ICE officer was hospitalized and received 20 stitches in his right arm and 13 in his left arm.
Munoz was later convicted of assaulting a federal officer.

UPDATE: Authorities released the person of interest from custody late Sunday night and the gunman is still at large.
The man identified and detained by law enforcement as a “person of interest” in the Saturday mass shooting at Brown University is a 24-year-old Wisconsin man, according to reports.
Law enforcement tracked the man down at the Hampton Inn in Coventry, Rhode Island, on Sunday. The man had rented a room in the hotel. Law enforcement officers who apprehended the man found two firearms in the room as well: a revolver and a Glock handgun with a laser sight attachment, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/brown-university-shooting-12-13-25?post-id=cmj65hfx200063b6p2twlb47c">CNN</a>.
On Sunday afternoon, the FBI was spotted around a home owned by the family of the person of interest, according to CNN.
Law enforcement officials are investigating “what might be an extensive mental health history” for the Wisconsin man, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/brown-university-shooting-live-updates-rcna249097/rcrd94445?canonicalCard=true">NBC News</a> reports. Officials are also investigating a potential link between the man and Brown University.
According to public records, the Wisconsin man’s current residence is an apartment in Washington, D.C. An Army spokeswoman told <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/live-blog/brown-university-shooting-live-updates-rcna249097/rcrd94446?canonicalCard=true">NBC News</a> that the man served as an infantryman in the Army from May 2021 to November 2024.
Law enforcement and officials have been cautious about giving much information about the “person of interest” in public. A person of interest, to law enforcement, is someone who police believe has information or a connection to a crime. Police have not yet identified the man as a “suspect” in the shooting.
Officials acknowledged the slow release of information in a press conference on Sunday, urging patience as officials continue to investigate the shooting.
“It’s not that we’re hiding anything, it’s just the way we work,” <a href="https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/brown-university-shooting-12-13-25?post-id=cmj650v9700003b6tdfxt51uo">said</a> Providence Police Department Major David Lapatin. “That’s why we haven’t been able to give you much information. But we’re trying to do the best job we can. And some things we have to keep, you know, out of the public light until we’re ready to come out with everything.”
A gunman entered an engineering building at Brown University on Saturday afternoon and killed two students and injured nine others. Law enforcement launched a manhunt immediately after the shooting before picking up the “person of interest” nearly 12 hours later.

What To Know About The ‘Person Of Interest’ In The Brown University Shooting

Over two dozen Republican senators are backing an effort from Texas Senator John Cornyn to toughen the punishment for criminals who violently attack enforcement officers, The Daily Wire has learned. 
On Thursday, Cornyn will introduce the “Back the Blue Act” to increase the penalties for murdering or attempting to murder law enforcement while also expanding self-defense rights for police officers. The proposal has significant support from fellow Republicans, with over 31 signing on to co-sponsor.
“Our law enforcement officers bravely risk their lives daily to protect our communities, and anyone who targets them should be met with the full force of the law, including the death penalty,” he told The Daily Wire. “America was built on the principles of law and order, and this legislation sends a clear message that targeted attacks on law enforcement will not be tolerated, dangerous criminals will be held accountable, and our men and women in blue have our full and unwavering support.”
The legislation would create a new federal crime for killing or attempting to kill a federal judge, a federal law enforcement officer, or other federally funded public safety officer. If an officer dies, the murderer would be subject to the death penalty and a mandatory 30 years in prison, according to Cornyn’s office. The proposal would make attempted murder or murder an aggravating factor when considering the death penalty as well. 
Penalties for assaulting federal law enforcement would also increase, as would the punishment for fleeing across state lines to avoid prosecution for attacking law enforcement.  The proposal would also impose time limits on when a federal court can review the state-level conviction of someone who murdered a police officer in the line of duty. 
Law enforcement officers would also be given the ability to carry their firearms into federal facilities and other areas where gun possession is typically restricted, according to Cornyn’s office.

The legislation is backed by major law enforcement organizations like the Fraternal Order of Police, National Association of Police Organizations, Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association, Major County Sheriffs of America, National Narcotic Officers’ Associations’ Coalition, Association of State Criminal Investigative Agencies, and the Sergeants Benevolent Association of the NYPD.
Cornyn’s proposal of the bill comes as he faces a contentious GOP primary challenge from Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton and U.S. Rep. Wesley Hunt.

President Donald Trump is preparing to deploy the National Guard to New Orleans as part of a crime crackdown effort in major cities nationwide.
The president said during a cabinet meeting on Monday that “in a couple of weeks,” the federal surge will make its way to the Louisiana city, like Memphis and Washington, D.C., before it.
“We&#8217;re going to New Orleans pretty soon. The governor called me; he&#8217;d like to have us go there,” Trump said. “Governor Landry &#8212; great guy, great governor. He&#8217;s asked for help in New Orleans and we&#8217;re going to go there in a couple of weeks.&#8221;
Trump referred to changes made in the capital city as a “miracle” as many crimes dropped in the aftermath of the federal law enforcement takeover that took place during the summer.
“We know that when carjackings go down, when use of guns goes down, when homicide or robbery go down, neighborhoods feel safer and are safer,” Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser said in August after initially being a strong critic of the takeover.
A recent WalletHub study ranked New Orleans dead last in safety out of the 182 cities it surveyed. Memphis stood at #181, and Baton Rouge, Louisiana, came in at #180. In September, Republican Gov. Jeff Landry made a “request for federal assistance” to allow for 1,000 Louisiana National Guard members to tackle crime in the state.

The Daily Wire reported last month that Border Patrol will be conducting operations in the city, nicknamed “Swamp Sweep,” with approximately 250 agents.
“My first priority is to keep our community safe. The reports of due process violations and potential abuses in other cities are concerning. I want our community to be aware and informed of the protections available under law,” Democratic Mayor-elect Helena Moreno said in a statement regarding the immigration enforcement, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/border-patrol-heads-to-another-blue-city-in-latest-round-of-illegal-immigration-sweeps" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported at the time. Moreno launched a &#8220;community resources&#8221; <a href="https://helenamorenola.com/communityresources" target="_blank" rel="noopener">webpage</a> detailing the ways in which people should navigate federal immigration enforcement, saying that local police &#8220;will not ask about your immigration status.&#8221;
“We must demand accountability and that people’s rights are not violated. I’m also calling on our legal community to step up and provide whatever assistance they can to help protect and preserve individual rights,” Moreno continued.
A spokesperson for the city of New Orleans government said that the city and &#8220;New Orleans Police Department have a track record of working collaboratively with Federal and State law enforcement partners and the National Guard and that will continue to be the position of the City of New Orleans.&#8221;

Aftyn Behn, the Democrat hopeful for Congress in Tennessee, deleted a radical social media post calling on all white people to get behind abolishing prisons.
“On this Juneteenth, we need less white folks posting Canva graphics and more adopting prison abolition as a political foundation,” Behn, a white woman, said in a deleted post just over a year ago, that is now archived on the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20240619153246/https:/twitter.com/AftynBehn/status/1803450863240757499" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Wayback Machine</a>. The post also recommended four books that &#8220;enhanced&#8221; her &#8220;political education.&#8221;

Behn is running against Republican Matt Van Epps in a deep red district to replace Mark Green, a congressman who resigned earlier this year. Democrats have spent a hefty amount of money and resources to try and drive turnout among Democrats, hoping to pull an upset in a low-turnout contest.

The deleted post was not Behn&#8217;s only time advocating for the radical policy, which has been embraced by many advocates of so-called &#8220;social justice.&#8221; In an August 2024 article in <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/politics/2024/08/01/candidate-profiles-tennessee-senate-and-house-primary/74623149007/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Tennessean</a>, Behn disclosed the same stance on prisons.

“No, I do not agree with these ‘tough-on-crime’ policies,” she told the publication at the time. &#8220;As a legislator who believes in prison abolition, I am committed to addressing the root causes of crime rather than implementing punitive measures that often perpetuate a cycle of harm.&#8221;

Behn’s campaign did not respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment. The Democrat has taken other controversial stances on crime, including being one of the handful of lawmakers who voted against the death penalty for those convicted of raping a minor, according to <a href="https://www.wkrn.com/news/tennessee-politics/death-penalty-for-child-rapists-clears-final-legislative-hurdle-heads-to-governors-desk/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">WKRN</a>. Behn raised concerns that if a child was aware that the consequence of the crime for the abuser was the death penalty, it might prevent the minor from reporting the crime.
“You can read testimonies again and again across this state, but the state intervening to kill a human being does nothing to deter the crime,” Behn said on the state House floor in April 2024 while debating the legislation with Republican Rep. William Lamberth.

The Democrat has also faced scrutiny over a 2020 post in which she praised people who support burning down police stations.
“Good morning, especially to the 54% of Americans that believe burning down a police station is justified,” Behn posted.
Behn declined to respond, saying instead, “I’m not gonna engage in cable news talking points.&#8221;
The Daily Wire reported on her past comments on abortion as well, saying she would be willing to get arrested for her advocacy on the issue.
“We’ll continue to figure out how to get abortion pills to people. So the organizing does not stop just because Roe is overturned,” Behn said in a May 2022 conversation with the Tennessee Holler.
Another podcast clip from 2020 of her went viral, in which she said that she hates Nashville.
“I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns, I hate country music, I hate all of the things that make Nashville apparently an ‘it’ city to the rest of the country. But I hate it,” she said.
Despite her radical positions, she has won the support of prominent Democrats, including former Vice President Kamala Harris and Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett.
President Donald Trump has also waded into the race, endorsing Van Epps.

Bethany MaGee is still receiving treatment at the hospital for severe burns after a man with more than 70 arrests doused her in gasoline and set her ablaze in an unprovoked attack on a Chicago train, the 26-year-old&#8217;s family shared on Tuesday.
The family has created a <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/support-bethany-magees-recovery">GoFundMe account</a> to help support MaGee, confirming the young woman&#8217;s identity, but also asking for privacy during MaGee&#8217;s long road to recovery.
&#8220;On November 17, Bethany MaGee was riding a CTA train in Chicago when she was attacked,&#8221; the family wrote. &#8220;She is currently hospitalized with the severe burns she sustained, and she is receiving treatment under the excellent care of her medical team.&#8221;
The family described MaGee as an animal lover, kind, and sensitive.
&#8220;In response to the countless requests for a way to help, our family is setting up this GoFundMe on Bethany’s behalf,&#8221; the MaGees said. &#8220;Many of her immediate medical expenses are covered by insurance and a victims fund, but with such a long road ahead of her, the freedom from financial worries would be a tremendous blessing. No gifts are expected, but any that are given will go directly to Bethany.&#8221;
The GoFundMe has so far garnered more than $30,000 in donations.

Surveillance footage shows the suspect dousing MaGee in gasoline and chasing her on the train car before setting her ablaze. Reed, who’s been arrested 72 times, allegedly shouted “burn alive, b****” and “burn, b****” during the attack.

Reed’s criminal history includes eight felony and seven misdemeanor convictions, <a href="https://www.click2houston.com/news/national/2025/11/21/federal-judge-orders-man-held-on-federal-terrorism-charge-in-chicago-train-attack/?utm_source=chatgpt.com">according</a> to the Associated Press. Reed’s arrests concern arson, assault and battery, and other offenses.
At the time of his most recent attack, Reed was ordered to wear electronic monitoring due an aggravated battery charge in which he was accused of hitting a social worker. Cook County prosecutors wanted to keep Reed behind bars until his trial, but the judge released him.
MaGee&#8217;s family asked for privacy at this time, writing, &#8220;This will be her story to tell—or not to tell—in the future.&#8221;

Five years ago, as a state assemblyman, New York City mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani called to defund the police. Today, he supports funding the department, but not expanding its ranks, putting himself at odds with Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch’s repeated warnings.
&#8220;The reason I made the decision to retain commissioner Tisch is because of the importance of outcomes,” stated the 34-year-old New York City mayor-elect on Sunday&#8217;s &#8220;Meet the Press.&#8221; &#8220;The fact that she has been able to deliver on rooting out corruption while lowering crime is something to be celebrated, and I think the commissioner and I have been very clear that what brings us together is a shared importance of public safety &#8212; I think we can do that with the officers we have.&#8221;
Tisch, however, argues the very outcomes Mamdani retained her for happened &#8220;against all odds.&#8221;
&#8220;The crime reductions we saw last year were achieved against all odds and are entirely attributable to the hard work and the grit of New York&#8217;s finest,&#8221; she said in a January press conference. &#8220;The deck has been completely stacked against our cops.&#8221;
Tisch points to low staffing levels and a justice system that &#8220;prioritizes offenders over victims,&#8221; making officers’ jobs far more difficult. Her plan to sustain the city’s gains emphasizes hiring more police and confronting what she calls &#8220;surging recidivism,&#8221; which is when repeat offenders cycle through the system.
Alongside Mayor Eric Adams in November, Tisch supported a plan to fund 5,000 additional New York Police Department officers with a goal of reaching a 40,000-member force by fiscal year 2029.
Mamdani insists the force should stay at 35,000.

&#8220;I’ve said over the course of the campaign that I think the number we’ve had budgeted of 35,000 officers is a sufficient number,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What we have to do, however, is to allow those officers to focus on policing.&#8221;
Mamdani noted the New York Police Department responds to 200,000 mental health calls a year. He plans to build a Department of Community Safety and &#8220;task it with the mental health crisis, the homelessness crisis, and allow officers to focus on serious crimes&#8230;&#8221;
Tisch argues that lasting progress requires fixing legislation. &#8220;The key driving factor is the revolving door of our criminal justice system, created in large part by legislative changes that took effect in 2020.&#8221;
Tisch has repeatedly spotlighted high-profile cases of recidivism, including a career criminal who allegedly robbed a Queens deli at gunpoint before shooting a New York Police Department officer and an innocent bystander. The suspect had 17 prior arrests, many occurring while on lifetime parole.
&#8220;Imagine how disheartening it is for our cops to be out there arresting the same people for the same crimes in the same neighborhoods day after day,&#8221; the commissioner said.
The Trump administration backs Mamdani’s decision to keep Jessica Tisch as New York City’s police commissioner.
Trump’s National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett recently said, &#8220;We are really reassured that [Mamdani has] kept the police commissioner. In previous administrations in New York, we have seen law and order really go South.&#8221;

The Houston Police Officers&#8217; Union is aiming to recruit NYPD officers disaffected by Tuesday&#8217;s election of Democratic socialist Zohran <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mamdani-time-new-york-city-turns-to-muslim-socialist-zohran-mamdani-as-next-mayor?author=Brecca+Stoll&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=MAMDANI+TIME%3A+New+York+City+Turns+To+Muslim+Socialist+Zohran+Mamdani+As+Next+Mayor">Mamdani</a> as New York City mayor.
The police union released an ad on Tuesday, asking officers flat out: &#8220;NYPD, are you disgusted with the election of Zohran Mamdani?&#8221;
Mamdani, 34, has pledged to replace police officers with mental health professionals to respond to certain crisis situations across the Big Apple. He previously called to &#8220;defund the police,&#8221; but has attempted to <a href="https://x.com/america/status/1979180171539141060" target="_blank" rel="noopener">backtrack</a> on the problematic stance during his mayoral campaign.
His critics have said that crime will only surge under his leadership.
Mamdani has also pledged to champion the sanctuary city policy that&#8217;s hamstrung local police and prevented them from handing illegal immigrant criminals over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
“We believe socialism is going to be bad for law enforcement in New York City. There is opportunity here in Houston for officers to come, make a great life for themselves, the cost of living is a lot less and you can actually do police work and be supported by our mayor and our city council,&#8221; Houston Police Union President Doug Griffith <a href="https://x.com/Brooketaylortv/status/1986076753131897341" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox News.

In their appeal, Texas&#8217;s largest police union offered &#8220;competitive pay&#8221; and other benefits, while also promising a &#8220;supportive mayor and city council.&#8221;
Mamdani, an assemblyman from Queens, defeated former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo after receiving more than 1,000,000 votes. The Republican on the ballot, Curtis Sliwa, lagged far behind the two candidates.
