Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives used the fifth anniversary of the January 6 protests at the U.S. Capitol to display transparently what their real political agenda is: use the events of that day to tar and feather the Republican Party forever.
House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries pompously declared the hearing a “very solemn, important occasion.”
“Five years ago today, a violent mob incited by Donald Trump attacked the Capitol as part of a concerted effort to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election,” he claimed. He followed by calling the protesters a “bloodthirsty, treacherous mob” that “brutally assaulted police officers and seriously injured more than 140 brave men and women of law enforcement.” He attacked President Trump and “far-right extremists,” accusing them of attempting to “rewrite history.”
In an astonishing aside, considering the Democratic Party’s years-long agenda of opening the floodgates to illegal immigrants, he continued, “The criminals and thugs that Donald Trump pardoned have flooded communities across the country, unleashing violence and mayhem,” calling them an “ongoing threat to public safety.”
Then he segued to the current era, speaking of Republicans while pontificating, “They refuse to serve as a check and balance on an increasingly out-of-control executive branch, preferring to be nothing more than a reckless rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s extreme agenda.”
The true agenda of the Democrats could not have been more clearly revealed than by what Jeffries said in his conclusion: “It was shameful then; it is shameful now, and it will be shameful always and forever.”
Rep. Jamie Raskin, the Democratic ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, thanked Jeffries and Rep. Bennie Thompson — who had served as Chair of the January 6 Select Committee — for “Not surrendering to the Orwellian project of forgetting, but rather insisting that we remember.”
Raskin wanted to show off his considerable literary chops, as he spanned the literary gamut, quoting author William Faulkner but also comic books, as he intoned, “With election deniers and J6 conspiracists Pam Bondi and Kash Patel at the top of the DOJ, it’s like the Joker, the Riddler, and the Penguin have taken over Gotham City.”
He, too, alluded to the idea that the events of January 6 should be used as a cudgel against the GOP in perpetuity, saying, “It is still January 6 in America, and it will be until the forces of strong, non-violent democracy prevail. We are still in the fight of our lives.”
Of course, back in late June 2020, in the midst of the Black Lives Matter protests, Raskin <a href="https://raskin.house.gov/2020/6/chairman-raskin-s-opening-statement-briefing-first-amendment-violations-black?utm_source=chatgpt.com">declared,</a> “There have been disgraceful episodes of violence against protesters … The unprovoked brutality of some of these offenses against citizen protesters are only known because so many Americans refuse to stop exercising the very freedoms under attack.  &#8230; The people in the streets who moved us to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act are not the “enemies of the people.”  They are the people. In American democracy, the Constitution, the streets, and the future all belong to the people, not to the government. Let’s protect the precious First Amendment rights of the people.”

President Donald Trump taunted Democrats on Saturday, saying that he believed their caucus was close to fracturing over the ongoing government shutdown — and then he called on Republicans to do away with the Senate filibuster once and for all, and clear the way for his agenda.
Trump issued both statements together in a post to his Truth Social platform, saying that Republicans should &#8220;blow up&#8221; the filibuster whether or not they were able to reach a deal with Democrats to end the shutdown.

Trump&#8217;s comments come just 24 hours after Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) put forth a proposal to bring the shutdown to an end, saying that Democrats would come to the table if Republicans would sign off on a one-year extension of the Obamacare subsidies — a move that would bring the health care discussion back to the forefront just in time for the midterm elections.
Senator Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) has already said that Schumer&#8217;s offer is &#8220;dead on arrival.&#8221;

But Republicans would not have been Schumer&#8217;s only hurdle — one month ago, just one week into the shutdown, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) turned down that same deal, calling it a &#8220;laughable proposition.&#8221;
The complicating factor, as Trump pointed out, is that the longer the shutdown drags on, the more talk there is about Republicans doing away with the Senate filibuster in order to reopen the government and get things moving again. And despite the fact that Democrats overwhelmingly supported ending the filibuster when President Joe Biden was still in office, the absolute last thing they want is to have it scrapped while Trump has the White House and majorities in both chambers.

FBI Director Kash Patel went toe to toe with several Democrats during a Tuesday hearing in the House Judiciary Committee, clashing with Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) over the release of files related to the late convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Raskin, who led the second impeachment hearings during President Donald Trump&#8217;s first term, heavily suggested that Patel was stonewalling Democrats in their persistent efforts to make the Epstein files public — efforts in which they showed no interest while former President Joe Biden was in office — and that he was likely doing so at Trump&#8217;s request. Patel repeatedly reminded Raskin that numerous court orders prevented him from simply releasing the files.

Patel pointed to the multiple court orders and a previous agreement Epstein had reached with federal prosecutors, noting that the disgraced financier had been free for 12 years and previous administrations — including former President Barack Obama&#8217;s — had done nothing to move his case forward.
&#8220;Has anyone released more information on Epstein than I have? Did Comey? Did Wray?&#8221; Patel asked, and Raskin insisted that it wasn&#8217;t enough.
&#8220;Why don&#8217;t you just release the entire file as you promised to do?&#8221; Raskin asked.
&#8220;I literally just told you, there are multiple federal court orders, I’m not going to break the law to satisfy your curiosity,&#8221; Patel shot back. &#8220;You didn&#8217;t join us when we filed in the courts to release the court orders. &#8220;That’s a tiny fraction of the material we’re talking about,&#8221; Raskin insisted.
Patel pointed out that if the information had not been released, Raskin could not possibly know how much information there was. &#8220;How do you know that? Have you seen everything?&#8221;

British Member of Parliament Nigel Farage fended off attacks from Democrats on Wednesday while he warned lawmakers about threats to free speech Americans may face from his home country. 
Farage, the leader of Reform U.K., gave the warning as he testified before the House Judiciary Committee at a hearing on “Europe’s Threats to American Speech and Innovation.” The British politician pointed to the arrest of Irish comedian Graham Linehan for posts he made critical of transgender ideology as a warning for Americans who may hope to visit England one day. 
“This could happen to any American man or woman [who] goes to Heathrow [who] has said things online that the British government and British police don’t like. It is a potentially big threat to tech bosses, to many, many others,” Farage said. “This legislation we’ve got will damage trade between our countries, threaten free speech across the West because of the knock-on rollout effects of this legislation from us or from the European Union.”
Farage, whose party appears poised for a major victory in the next United Kingdom elections, urged American politicians and business leaders to stand up to the British government. 
“I come from a land of Magna Carta, I come from a land that gave us the mother of parliaments, and it doesn’t give me any great joy to be sitting in America and describing the really awful, authoritarian situation that we have now sunk into,” he said. 
The center of Farage’s ire is a law called the Online Safety Act, which he says was written vaguely to allow for a crackdown on speech the British government doesn’t like. 
Farage was repeatedly pressed by Democrats on the committee, who attacked him as a “fringe politician.” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking member of the committee, said that Farage was a “far-right pro-Putin politician” and a “Trump sycophant and wannabe.”

Another witness who testified during the hearing was Alliance Defending Freedom International lawyer Lorcán Price, who testified about the dangers of the European Union’s Digital Services Act. 
“Why should this matter for Americans? Why should you be concerned? Because of the worldwide reach of European law,” Price said. “The so-called Brussels effect changes regulation in every area that the European Union chooses to regulate, and now they’ve entered the business of regulating speech.”
That act empowers the European Commission to impose significant financial penalties on tech companies it claims are not doing enough to combat so-called disinformation. In some circumstances, American tech companies could be fined up to six percent of their global revenue if they violate certain conditions.

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) issued a stark warning to El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele and other foreign leaders, cautioning that Democrats will not &#8220;look kindly&#8221; on those who cooperate with President Donald Trump when they return to power.
In a recent <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxYsbcWdjS0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">episode</a> of &#8220;Pod Save America,&#8221; Raskin spoke with host and former Obama aide Tommy Vietor about the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, an illegal immigrant living in Maryland who was deported and sent to prison in his home country of El Salvador despite a 2019 court order prohibiting him from being sent back there. While at a White House meeting with Trump last week, Bukele <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/el-salvador-nayib-bukele-meeting-trump-white-house/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> his nation will not send Abrego Garcia back to the United States, even after the Supreme Court upheld an order for the federal government to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/facilitate-not-effectuate-wh-responds-to-scotus-ruling-on-mistakenly-deported-salvadoran" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;facilitate&#8221;</a> his return.
Vietor said a &#8220;Latin America policy expert&#8221; suggested to him that &#8220;Democrats should threaten to take action against any foreign government that participates in the extraordinary rendition of American citizens.&#8221; He listed cutting off future aid and seeking to prosecute foreign officials as possible forms of retaliation.
Raskin, who is the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said he liked the idea, calling it a &#8220;complement to something that we need to be doing right now, which is engaging in far more work of transnational democratic solidarity with the democratic governments and the democratic movements and peoples and parties of the world to try to prevent the spread of the lawlessness and the fascist chaos that&#8217;s been unleashed against us.&#8221;
&#8220;But implicit in it,&#8221; Raskin continued, &#8220;should be the idea that if and when we come back to power — and we will — we are not going to look kindly upon people who facilitated &#8230; authoritarianism in our country. That&#8217;s an assault on our Constitution and on our people.&#8221;
The comment prompted rebukes from some of Trump&#8217;s GOP allies on X.

When pressed by Hunt whether he wants to challenge Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-NY) for the ranking member position in the judiciary panel, Raskin said, &#8220;I&#8217;m not ruling anything out at this point. And we&#8217;re engaged in conversations, all with the purpose of creating a strategic focus and capacity within the Democratic members of the House, so that we&#8217;re going to be a really effective and muscular opposition.&#8221;

Speaking at an event in Arizona on Thursday, Trump slammed Cheney as a “radical war hawk” who got to make decisions about war while “sitting in Washington in a nice building,” arguing that “she always wanted to go to war.”
“Let’s put her with a rifle, standing there with nine barrels shooting at her, okay? Let’s see how she feels about it, you know, when the guns are trained on her face,” Trump said.
The media, Cheney, and many Democrats responded to the remarks by claiming that Trump had called for Cheney to be executed.
&#8220;This is how dictators destroy free nations,&#8221; Cheney claimed. &#8220;They threaten those who speak against them with death. We cannot entrust our country and our freedom to a petty, vindictive, cruel, unstable man who wants to be a tyrant.&#8221;
CNN’s Kasie Hunt reported on Trump’s remarks, saying on Friday morning that he “is escalating his violent rhetoric, suggesting one of his most prominent critics, former Congresswoman Liz Cheney, should be fired upon.”
“Of course, violent rhetoric is not new for Trump,” Hunt added. “But this stark imagery represents an escalation at a tense moment when the country is on edge heading into Tuesday …”

Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) said the quiet part out loud in a recently surfaced video, suggesting that Democrats in Congress might move to block the results of the 2024 presidential election if former President Donald Trump were to win.
Raskin cited the Supreme Court&#8217;s March decision — a unanimous ruling that barred states from removing Trump from the ballot — and argued that because the Court had not acted to declare Trump ineligible to be president, Congress would have to do so on January 6 in the event that Trump won re-election in November.
&#8220;Even if voters unquestionably elect Donald Trump as President, no matter the margin, and even if the election is universally accepted as free and fair, top Democrats are calling on Congress to block certification of the results, and prep for civil war,&#8221; former Rep. The Supreme Court did, as Raskin stated, leave the issue to Congress — but the ruling, according to <a href="https://www.scotusblog.com/2024/03/supreme-court-rules-states-cannot-remove-trump-from-ballot-for-insurrection/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ScotusBlog</a>, also noted that Congress would have to first pass &#8220;appropriate legislation&#8221; that would allow enforcement of the 14th Amendment. Congress would also have to determine that the person in question was actually guilty of insurrection in order to enforce Section 3 — and Congress, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jamie-raskin-second-trump-impeachment-a-dramatic-success-trumps-lawyers-explosive-and-deranged" target="_blank" rel="noopener">led by Raskin himself</a>, ostensibly already tried and failed to do just that when they impeached Trump the second time.
<blockquote>But before disqualifying someone under Section 3, the justices observed, there must be a determination that the provision actually applies to that person. And Section 5 of the 14th Amendment gives the power to make that determination to Congress, by authorizing it to pass “appropriate legislation” to “enforce” the 14th Amendment. Nothing in the 14th Amendment, the court stressed, gives states the power to enforce Section 3 against candidates for federal office, nor was there any history of states doing so in the years after the amendment was ratified.</blockquote>

None of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/house-democrats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Democrats in the House</a> voted for a bill to add a citizenship question to the census questionnaire that passed through the GOP-led chamber on Wednesday.
The <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-bill/7109/text" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Equal Representation Act</a>, which was <a href="https://edwards.house.gov/media/press-releases/house-representatives-passes-edwards-bill-only-include-us-citizens" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> by Rep. Chuck Edwards (R-NC), <a href="https://clerk.house.gov/Votes/2024193" target="_blank" rel="noopener">received</a> 206 &#8220;yeas&#8221; from Republicans and 202 &#8220;nays&#8221; from Democrats. Twenty-two members, including 11 Republicans and 11 Democrats, did not vote.
The bill would require a citizenship question on the decennial census starting in 2030. It also demands the findings be reported and modify apportionment of House representatives and electoral votes to exclude noncitizens.
In a <a href="https://twitter.com/RepJamesComer/status/1788337410918539743" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a>, Oversight Chairman James Comer (R-KY) said the House was &#8220;taking steps to proactively protect a fair electoral process&#8221; as he bemoaned how the &#8220;Biden Administration’s open border policies have created the worst border crisis in American history, impacting every American.&#8221;
The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), pointed to one of the amendments to the Constitution in making a case against passing the census questionnaire legislation.
&#8220;The Fourteenth Amendment makes the census and reapportionment apply to &#8216;all persons.&#8217; Constitutional originalists, textualists and followers of precedent must reject unlawful GOP attempts to confine the census and Congressional apportionment to citizens,&#8221; Raskin <a href="https://twitter.com/RepRaskin/status/1788242159080026605" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a post to X.
Another Democrat who spoke out against the bill was Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL), who hails from a House district created after the 2020 census that was <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-politics/illinois-3rd-congressional-district-delia-ramirez-gil-villegas-among-5-competing-to-represent-states-new-hispanic-district/2853325/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">drawn to have a Hispanic plurality</a>.
&#8220;Today, Republicans forced a vote on H.R. 7109, an unconstitutional bill intended to make people afraid and to discourage their participation in the Census,&#8221; she <a href="https://twitter.com/repdeliaramirez/status/1788371249095229932" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> on X. &#8220;H.R. 1709 ultimately undercounts, underrepresents, and underfunds communities like ours, #IL03. I VOTED NO.&#8221;
With no support across the aisle, the GOP bill&#8217;s prospects in the Democrat-controlled Senate may not be very good. Still, Republican lawmakers and their allies rallied behind the legislation to boost their messaging about the issue of illegal immigration ahead of the 2024 election.
Stephen Miller, who served as a senior adviser to former President Donald Trump, <a href="https://twitter.com/StephenM/status/1788379168981327912" target="_blank" rel="noopener">warned</a> on X that &#8220;House Seats and Electoral College votes WILL BE added to areas with the most illegals (including all Biden illegals) unless [the] Senate passes the bill.&#8221; He added, &#8220;Invasion by design.&#8221;

Hecklers disrupted a prominent <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/house-democrats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House Democrat</a>&#8216;s university lecture on democracy last week, after which the president of the school ended the event due to what he called a show of &#8220;free speech.&#8221;
Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/jamie-raskin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jamie Raskin</a> (D-MD), the ranking member of the Oversight Committee, spoke at the University of Maryland (UMD) on Thursday until a commotion about the Israel-Hamas war led him to get sidetracked and open the room to questions.
Although UMD President Darryll Pines reportedly cut short the lecture and wished the disruptors had been more civil, he <a href="https://www.marylandmatters.org/2024/03/29/raskin-speech-at-umd-disrupted-by-protesters/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told Capitol News Service</a> that the result was a positive one.
&#8220;[Raskin] came here to speak about where our democracy is going in our country,” Pines reportedly said. “What you saw play out actually was democracy and free speech and academic freedom.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;From our perspective as a university, there are the difficult conversations that we should be having.&#8221;
Raskin told the news outlet the &#8220;sentiments&#8221; of the protesters were &#8220;perfectly consistent&#8221; with his planned lecture, which was titled &#8220;Democracy, Autocracy and the Threat to Reason in the 21st Century.&#8221;
The congressman said he is &#8220;not really opposed to heckling&#8221; but noted that &#8220;it seems like heckling today is all about drowning out the speaker, and that’s totally antithetical to the spirit of free expression.&#8221;
As word of what transpired at the event and what Pines had to say about it spread on social media, people chimed in about their views on protesters effectively shutting down speakers.

Two Democrat impeachment stars lashed out at former Hunter Biden business partner Tony Bobulinski during a Wednesday hearing, interrupting Bobulinski and complaining to the committee chair because he had accused them of lying.
Reps. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), who led the second impeachment against former President Donald Trump — and Dan Goldman (D-NY), who led the first — objected to Bobulinski&#8217;s opening statement, during which he called both of them liars.
Bobulinski – who also claimed during Wednesday&#8217;s hearing that Hunter Biden had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/impeachment-witness-tony-bobulinski-claims-hunter-and-james-biden-perjured-themselves" target="_blank" rel="noopener">perjured himself</a> during his own testimony before Congress — said that Reps. Comer apologized for the interruption and told Bobulinski to carry on with his opening statement, but Raskin was not finished.
&#8220;Mr. Chairman, save his time, but he called members of this committee liars,&#8221; Raskin complained. &#8220;And I just want to know whether the order and decorum requirements of House Rule 11 apply to witnesses before the committee. Does it apply or does it not?&#8221;
Comer, after a brief conference off-mic, replied that there were rules of decorum for the committee members but no language he knew of that applied the same rules to witnesses. Raskin did not appear to be thrilled with the ruling, but did not interrupt again.
Goldman also responded to Bobulinski&#8217;s comments, saying, &#8220;We have a very important hearing here, and we don&#8217;t have time for stunts.&#8221;
Later in the hearing, Goldman got into another testy exchange with Bobulinski, asserting that he had been the one who wanted Joe Biden involved and claiming that Hunter Biden had dumped him as a business partner because of that.
