Despite the fact that his party had largely campaigned on kitchen table issues like the Iran war, gas prices, and general “affordability,” Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) reacted to Tuesday’s Democrat sweep by promising to “go after” any business or law firm that “collaborated” with President Donald Trump.

Raskin, who currently serves as the Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee, is poised to take on the role of committee chair when the new Congress is seated in January. He told MS NOW host Nicolle Wallace that he and his colleagues “will not hesitate” to target anyone who collaborated with Trump.

“We will not hesitate to go after the private corporations that are collaborating in all of the lawlessness with Donald Trump. We’ve done it before, and we will absolutely do it again,” Raskin vowed. He did not indicate which specific actions he was referring to as “lawlessness” — but suggested that any law firm that made a deal of any kind with the Trump administration was automatically suspect.

“The law firms that you mentioned, we know that there were many heroic law firms that have stood up against all of the lawbreaking and then the attempt to shake them down for the time of their partners and of their young associates, and yet there are major law firms in America, including Paul Weiss, that have capitulated to these coercive tactics by Donald Trump and have basically surrendered and made all kinds of outrageous concessions,” the Democrat added.

“We’ve sent a number of letters to those law firms, and they have been not forthcoming up until now,” he continued. “But when we have the power of subpoena, and we have the power to conduct oversight, we believe a lot of these law firms are going to be coming forward and telling the truth. Otherwise, they are law firms that have no respect for the rule of law, and we’re going to make sure that they comply with the federal subpoena; it is the exact same legal force as a judicial subpoena does. Subpoena means ‘under the power’ or ‘under the penalty of law.'”

Raskin did not say what the remedy might be if the law firms had been telling the truth from the start, nor did he explain how the strategy he was detailing would align with his party’s campaign promise to lower gas prices, lower the overall cost of living, address the affordability crisis, or put an end to the war in Iran.
