President Donald Trump has promised an end to the 15% tariff on Irish whiskey.
Trump was attending the Amgen Irish Open at his Trump International Golf Links resort in Doonbeg, County Clare — and he took the microphone at the contest&#8217;s close to present a trophy to Irish golfer Shane Lowry, who won the tournament.
&#8220;This is an honor. We&#8217;re so proud. The whole Doonbeg — and frankly, Ireland itself has been so incredible, so inviting, and we&#8217;re very honored presenting you with a great course, it&#8217;s been great,&#8221; Trump said, but then he pivoted.
&#8220;I want to mention one thing. Taoiseach and I talked about it, and Shane talked about it, and everybody&#8217;s been bugging me, they&#8217;re saying, &#8216;Would you do me a favor? It&#8217;s so unfair what&#8217;s going on. Could you possibly take the tariffs off of Irish whisky?'&#8221;
The crowd roared with laughter, and Trump smiled before he continued, &#8220;And I said on behalf of the United States of America, I am going to take the tariffs off of Irish whiskey.&#8221;
The crowd cheered so loud then that Trump was completely drowned out as he finished his sentence.
&#8220;Thank you,&#8221; Trump said, turning to Lowry and adding, &#8220;Shane, great job.&#8221;
Trump was not clear about when the <a href="https://commission.europa.eu/topics/trade/eu-us-trade-deal_en">tariffs</a> — currently set at 15% as part of the flat tariffs against many European Union exports — would be lifted. Those tariffs took effect on July 1, 2026.

&#8220;The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking!&#8221; Trump said at the time.
The zero-tariff policy on Scotch whisky took effect July 24, a change the Scotch Whisky Association welcomed as &#8220;welcome news for business on both sides of the Atlantic.&#8221;

President Donald Trump broke with decades of American neutrality on Northern Ireland’s constitutional future Saturday, saying during a visit to Dublin that he would “love to see” the island of Ireland unified.
“I don’t want to cause any problem. I will tell you, I’d love to see it unified,” Trump said alongside Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin. “It’s going to happen eventually.” Trump further called reunification “a fantastic thing” and said it would be “a great feather in everybody’s cap,” while acknowledging that the United Kingdom would have a say in any change. “How can it be bad?” Trump said.
The remarks represented a notable departure from the longstanding U.S. approach to the issue, in which successive administrations have supported the peace process without taking sides on whether Northern Ireland should remain part of the United Kingdom or join the Republic of Ireland.
Trump appeared to recognize almost immediately that he had ventured into politically sensitive territory. Later Saturday, speaking at the U.S. ambassador’s residence, Trump returned to his comments and acknowledged that there was “no good answer” to the question. “I gave a nice answer, I think,” Trump said. “We’ll worry about it tomorrow.” He added that Irish unification would still be “a very cool thing.”
Northern Ireland’s constitutional status has been one of the most sensitive political questions in the British Isles for generations. During “The Troubles,” 3,600 people were killed during the three decades of violence which pitted Irish nationalists seeking a united Ireland against unionists who wanted Northern Ireland to remain part of the United Kingdom.
The 1998 Belfast Agreement, commonly known as the Good Friday Agreement, established the framework that largely ended that conflict. The agreement enshrined the principle of consent: Northern Ireland remains part of the United Kingdom unless a majority of its people vote to change its constitutional status. Thus, Trump’s comments produced an immediate political reaction.
Gavin Robinson, leader of Northern Ireland’s Democratic Unionist Party, rejected the president’s intervention. “President Trump knows better than most that elections matter,” Robinson wrote on <a href="https://x.com/GRobinsonDUP/status/2098724853075292361">X</a>. “Northern Ireland’s constitutional future will be decided by the people of Northern Ireland, not by commentary in London, Dublin or Washington.”
“Northern Ireland is part of the United Kingdom because that is the settled democratic will of its people,” Robinson added.
The British government likewise indicated that its position had not changed. Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there is currently insufficient public support to hold a referendum on Northern Ireland’s constitutional status and that such a vote is therefore not on the table. Trump acknowledged that London would inevitably be involved. “The U.K. will have something to say about it, obviously,” he said.
Irish nationalists, meanwhile, seized on the president’s remarks. Sinn Féin leader Mary Lou McDonald <a href="https://www.irishnews.com/news/northern-ireland/our-national-journey-is-now-reunification-nationalist-party-leaders-say-donald-trumps-comments-show-irish-unity-debate-has-shifted-5WTITK635VFQZC7ZHIX2555ELU/">said</a> Trump’s comments demonstrated that the conversation about Irish unity had shifted and called on the Irish government to begin preparing for the possibility of reunification.
Claire Hanna, leader of Northern Ireland’s Social Democratic and Labour Party, told her party’s annual conference that Trump had effectively announced his support for a united Ireland, prompting cheers from the crowd.

Trump’s comments were not entirely unprecedented. Earlier this year, he suggested that Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland should have a “merger,” though the remark was subsequently treated by Northern Ireland’s deputy first minister Emma Little-Pengelly as a joke.
His most recent Ireland remarks came during a two-day visit that was officially focused in large part on economic ties and his visit to his golf resort in County Clare.
Trump met with Martin in Dublin and also held a ceremonial meeting with Irish President Catherine Connolly, who has previously criticized Trump’s foreign policy. The president’s intervention on Irish reunification was only one of several moments during the visit that touched on Britain’s role in the region.
The United States played a significant diplomatic role in the negotiations that produced the Good Friday Agreement, which remains the foundation of Northern Ireland’s constitutional settlement and power-sharing institutions. Trump did not announce a change in American policy Saturday, and the White House has not indicated that his remarks represent a formal shift in U.S. policy.

According to a shocking <a href="https://www.thejournal.ie/dassault-falcon-6x-irish-air-corps-government-jet-elbit-7117818-Aug2026/?lang=en">report</a> from The Journal, Ireland’s brand-new $61 million Dassault Falcon 6X government jet, which was purchased specifically to transport top officials and ministers was delivered without a vital, state-of-the-art infrared mapping system.
Why? Because the cutting-edge &#8220;FalconEye&#8221; system, which uses specialized infra-red technology to allow pilots to safely land through low visibility and thick fog, happens to be manufactured by Elbit Systems, a top Israeli defense company.
Rather than signing off on a contract with an Israeli vendor, stubborn Dublin bureaucrats threw a geopolitical temper tantrum and opted to leave the safety feature completely off the plane.
Now, the ruling elite’s shiny new joyride is rendered practically useless whenever the weather gets dicey.

Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face; while everyday pilots rely on advanced technology to stay safe in unpredictable skies, Ireland’s grandstanding politicians are voluntarily risking mid-air diversions and grounded flights just to keep its anti-Israel boycott intact.
This self-inflicted humiliation is just the latest chapter in Ireland’s obsessive crusade against Israel. Over the past few years, Dublin has eagerly led the anti-Israel charge in Europe. The hostility became so toxic that Israel <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2024/12/15/europe/israel-ireland-embassy-closure-intl/index.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20actions%20and%20antisemitic%20rhetoric,to%20a%20foreign%20ministry%20statement.">officially closed</a> its embassy in Dublin, citing the country&#8217;s relentless double standards.
Irish leaders like Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris have insisted their policies are merely about &#8220;human rights,&#8221; but this latest blunder exposes the sheer stupidity of the country&#8217;s woke dogma. In its rush to appease radical leftists and boycott Jewish technology, the Irish government ended up crippling its own official aircraft.
While Dublin’s political class sits stranded on the runway waiting for the fog to clear, Jerusalem is undoubtedly enjoying a well-deserved chuckle.

Irish actor Brenda Fricker, best known for her performances in “My Left Foot” and “Home Alone 2,” died Thursday evening at age 81.
Her agent Phil Belfield <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/07/17/brenda-fricker-dead/">told</a> TMZ that she passed away peacefully in her home in Dublin from an undisclosed illness.
&#8220;We will never see her again and the world is less for the lack of her,” Belfield said. “I was honored to know, love, and work with her, and she will always have a place in my heart and in the heart of so many film and TV fans the world over.&#8221;

A quiet corner of Ireland&#8217;s postcard-perfect Killarney has been thrown into chaos after an American mom — who expressed hard-Left views — was found <a href="https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/0709/1582500-jamey-carney-ireland/">bludgeoned to death</a> in her rented home, and her apparent Muslim lover allegedly skipped the country.
Jamey Carney, 43, a New York native who traded the Hudson Valley for the emerald hills of County Kerry back in 2021 and had “Free Palestine” and “F*ck ICE” heading her <a href="https://www.instagram.com/carney_jamey/">Instagram page</a>, was discovered dead last Tuesday afternoon by a horrified relative who came to check on her. Gardaí, the Irish national police force, say she was bludgeoned in the head sometime between Monday night and early Tuesday morning in the very bedroom where she&#8217;d once posted photos gushing about her dream mountain view.
Carney, who worked for a healthcare company in nearby Tralee and raised her 13-year-old daughter alone after her <a href="https://www.irishtimes.com/crime-law/2026/07/09/main-suspect-in-killarney-murder-inquiry-believed-to-have-fled-ireland/">father died</a> less than a year ago, was by all accounts beloved locally — active in community groups, sports leagues and, notably, pro-Palestinian activism.
But the man investigators are desperate to find is believed to be thousands of miles away. Gardaí say the person of interest — a Middle Eastern national in his late 20s or early 30s who reportedly first landed in France before settling in Ireland as an asylum seeker — hopped a bus out of Killarney hours before Carney&#8217;s body was even found, then boarded a Dublin Airport flight bound for Turkey. Whether he continued on to his home country is still being pieced together, with Interpol and European authorities now in the loop.
The man&#8217;s name has not yet been publicly released.
Reports suggest the mother&#8217;s lover had occasionally stayed at her home and that neighbors <a href="https://www.irishexaminer.com/news/arid-41876342.html">overheard</a> a heated argument the night before her death. He&#8217;s officially been labeled a &#8220;person of significant interest&#8221; — cop-speak for a person they very much want in an interview room.
Complicating matters: Irish extradition law bars authorities from hauling a suspect back purely for questioning. He&#8217;d first need to be formally charged, meaning prosecutors face a legal maze even if he&#8217;s tracked down.
The case has already ignited political sparks. Irish officials, wary of the optics given the suspect&#8217;s origin, have voiced concern; and online chatter has already zeroed in on Carney&#8217;s activism.

Mass protests, fires, and clashes with police erupted across parts of Northern Ireland on Tuesday after a Sudanese national was arrested in a brutal stabbing attack that shocked Belfast. 
Earlier in the day, law enforcement said the suspect shown in a <a href="https://x.com/TPointUK/status/2064116183012429857">graphic video</a> pinning another man to the ground and repeatedly stabbing him in the face and neck was a Sudanese national. Witnesses intervened and attempted to pull the attacker off the victim.
“He’s trying to cut his head off!” a person can be heard shouting in the video. 
The suspect was arrested on attempted murder charges, but authorities have yet to release his name. The victim, identified as a man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Police first identified the attacker as a man from Somalia, but later determined he was from Sudan. “What happened in Belfast last night is horrific,” he <a href="https://x.com/Nigel_Farage/status/2064251817630863694">said</a>. “The authorities must reveal the identity and status of the attacker immediately. The public are (sic) entitled to the truth.”
Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long said she was scared about backlash to minorities and said the attack should not be used to fuel “dangerous narratives.” 
“I also know there are many people in our community, people from ethnic minority backgrounds who are terrified today about any kind of retaliation or backlash against them, which we have seen in the past,” she told the BBC. 
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack. 
“The horrific attack in Belfast last night is sickening,” <a href="https://x.com/Keir_Starmer/status/2064273082580140525">said</a> Starmer. “I have absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets. My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened.”

It shows a Sudanese national <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/migrant-arrested-after-attempted-beheading-caught-on-video">repeatedly stabbing</a> a white man in his 40s in the middle of the road. The African man is squatting over the victim, who&#8217;s flat on the ground, attempting to behead him in front of horrified onlookers. There is a <a href="https://x.com/TPointUK/status/2064116183012429857">video</a> as well, which looks like something you might find out of Iraq on LiveLeak around 20 years ago. But because of the UK&#8217;s immigration policy (which is also our immigration policy), these videos are now being shot here in the West. 
The UK has imported the third world and, as a result — just months after Henry Nowak was slaughtered by a foreigner — we have yet another graphic example of an innocent white man getting executed in the streets. 
Obviously, the British government would have suppressed this footage, if not for social media and X, where it quickly circulated. Instead of denying that the attack occurred, they&#8217;re downplaying it. Here&#8217;s how state TV in Ireland reported on the attack: &#8220;Arrest made after man seriously injured in Belfast stabbing.&#8221;

That&#8217;s the headline they went with. Not &#8220;African tries to behead random white guy.&#8221; They feel compelled to provide as little information as possible, to hide the truth from the public. 
So did the BBC. Here was their reporting: &#8220;A man has been taken to hospital with &#8216;serious injuries&#8217; following a stabbing in north Belfast.&#8221;

So the problem isn&#8217;t the African guy trying to behead someone. The problem is the &#8220;right-wing.&#8221; And it&#8217;s not just one random politician doing this. Most of them are. Here&#8217;s the prime minister, Keir Starmer:

Give him a few more days, and he&#8217;ll be blaming knife crime again. There&#8217;s no mention whatsoever that the British government deliberately let this African into the country.

Take a step back and realize how truly shocking this is. When one of your native citizens is nearly beheaded on the streets, decent people — particularly people in power — pause and reevaluate everything they&#8217;ve been doing. They immediately begin thinking about how to prevent something like this from ever happening again, no matter what it takes, and no matter what their political beliefs are. But in the UK, the immediate response is to bury the story and to blame people who notice what&#8217;s happening. 
This is not really a political ideology that we&#8217;re up against. This is anti-white, anti-Western depravity. There is nothing that will make these people &#8220;change their minds&#8221; and govern in a way that protects the interests of their indigenous white citizens. They won&#8217;t do it unless they&#8217;re forced to do so.
As we&#8217;ve been covering for several days now, the trial of Karmelo Anthony — who is accused of stabbing white high school student Austin Metcalf — is yet another example of this anti-white depravity that&#8217;s now on full display. 
There is new reporting that, after the defense rested in the Karmelo Anthony murder trial yesterday, Anthony&#8217;s parents were visibly distraught. Anthony’s mother reportedly “had her head down.&#8221; His father was “leaning his head against the wall.” They knew, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that their son&#8217;s lawyers just concluded what has to be the single worst defense ever presented in a murder trial in the history of the United States. 
You have to understand, in this country, the defense doesn&#8217;t have to do anything. The burden is squarely on the prosecution to prove its case. So it&#8217;s pretty hard to mount a legal defense that&#8217;s actively bad when you can just remain silent. But that&#8217;s exactly what Anthony&#8217;s attorneys did. They called several witnesses who actually demolished their own case. One of them actually said, flat-out, that Karmelo Anthony was in the wrong and provoked Austin Metcalf. 
I want to discuss Karmelo Anthony&#8217;s family, and how apparently they&#8217;re now realizing — apparently for the first time — that their son is an alleged murderer. When Karmelo Anthony allegedly stabbed Austin Metcalf to death on April 2nd of last year, he and his family had a choice. They could have appeared in public and admitted that there was no reason whatsoever for Anthony to kill Metcalf. 
They could have immediately offered to take a plea deal — or, if no plea deal was offered, Anthony could have simply pled guilty to the charges — in order to spare the family a lengthy and very difficult trial. And they could have condemned the black activists who sought to use the case to advance the same anti-white propaganda that&#8217;s caused so much death and destruction over the past 60 years.
Instead of going this route, Karmelo Anthony and his family immediately began fundraising. They understood that, if they pretended that Anthony was somehow a victim, they could raise hundreds of thousands of dollars, mostly from unhinged black people. And to that end, Anthony&#8217;s family hired a representative at something called the &#8220;Next Generation Action Network&#8221; to stage a press conference. 
The first agenda item at this press conference was to smear Austin Metcalf. They implied they had some kind of dirt on him, which they wouldn&#8217;t reveal. Imagine being Hunter Metcalf, Austin&#8217;s twin brother, hearing that at a press conference. Just days earlier, you held your dying brother in your arms and said, &#8220;Oh my God. He&#8217;s my best friend. He&#8217;s my brother.” And then shortly afterward, you&#8217;re hearing these barely-literate race hustlers imply that your brother deserved to die.
And then, in one of the most disturbing moments of any press conference I&#8217;ve ever seen, they berated the father of Austin Metcalf for daring to show up to listen to their presentation. That&#8217;s all the father did. He was standing quietly in attendance. And for doing that, Anthony&#8217;s representatives told the police to throw him out of the building. And then they attacked his character.

If Karmelo Anthony&#8217;s family had a shred of decency or self-respect, they would&#8217;ve immediately fired their representative for saying this. They would&#8217;ve taken over the podium, apologized profusely, and begun the lengthy process of reckoning with the fact that they&#8217;re horrible parents who raised a murderer. That course of action would&#8217;ve brought an abrupt halt to all the donations from black supremacists on GiveSendGo. It would&#8217;ve made it more difficult for Anthony&#8217;s family to afford fancy new toys. But it obviously would&#8217;ve been the decent and moral thing to do.

Instead, as you can see, they told the police to escort Austin Metcalf&#8217;s father out of the building. So it&#8217;s not enough for Karmelo Anthony to murder this man&#8217;s child. They also feel the need to treat his grieving father like a criminal. Everyone&#8217;s their oppressor. Everyone&#8217;s doing something wrong, except their son, who just allegedly killed an unarmed teenager for no reason.
What&#8217;s even more perverse is that our legal system is set up to reward this kind of behavior. This is something most people aren&#8217;t talking about, but it&#8217;s true: Even after mocking Austin Metcalf, raising $600,000 from black activists, and presenting a legal defense that&#8217;s frankly insulting, it&#8217;s still possible for Karmelo Anthony to get convicted for murder and walk free in just a few years.
To break this down quickly — First of all, because of a ruling by the Supreme Court, 17-year-olds cannot be sentenced to death or to life imprisonment without parole. And because Karmelo Anthony was 17 years old at the time he allegedly killed Austin Metcalf, he&#8217;s covered by that ruling. Obviously, this is an absurd state of affairs.  Someone who stabs an unarmed teenager to death over a light-to-moderate shove, after instigating the confrontation in the first place, needs to be removed from society forever. 
So right away, at the outset, the maximum sentence Karmelo Anthony can receive in Texas is between 5 years and life in prison, with the possibility of parole after around 30 years. So the judge or jury, if Anthony opts for that route, has wide discretion to let him out of prison in just a few years.
I should also point out that in Texas, it&#8217;s possible for murderers to argue during sentencing that they committed the crime &#8220;in a sudden passion.&#8221; They have to convince the judge that they were put in a position that would &#8220;commonly produce a degree of anger, rage, resentment, or terror in a person of ordinary temper, sufficient to render the mind incapable of cool reflection.” 
The defendant has to demonstrate that he was &#8220;under the immediate influence of sudden passion arising from an adequate cause.&#8221; The classic example is walking in on your spouse cheating on you. Obviously, that wouldn&#8217;t apply to this case. But if the judge somehow buys that argument, then the murder becomes a second-degree felony, and the sentencing range shrinks to between 2 years and 20 years.
Even the possibility that Karmelo Anthony will be a free man at some point in his life is unacceptable. Our legal system is designed to enable violent behavior by young black men, who are the ones committing the vast majority of violent crimes. Someone who kills an unarmed teenager at a track meet over a &#8220;light shove&#8221; should not have the slightest possibility of being a free man in 20 years, much less two years. But that&#8217;s where we are. So if you&#8217;re looking for an explanation for why Karmelo Anthony was spotted smiling and joking with his attorneys the other day, that might be the reason. His parents might be crying because their grift is coming to an end. But Karmelo is probably under the impression — which may turn out to be accurate — that he won&#8217;t spend much time in prison, regardless of the outcome of the case.
But the deception isn&#8217;t just coming from Karmelo Anthony’s family or black activists. Many people who call themselves conservatives and &#8220;truth-tellers&#8221; are claiming that this case had nothing to do with race. And if that message prevails, then no matter how bad Karmelo Anthony&#8217;s defense is, the whole ordeal will be a victory for the Left. It will be a victory for the black activists and militants and thugs — and there are many of them — who will excuse the murder of a white victim for any reason whatsoever. 
No one should forget what this trial has revealed about millions of people we&#8217;re living alongside — people who demand to be treated just like anyone else, even as they celebrate the execution of white children solely because they&#8217;re white. These people desperately don&#8217;t want you to realize that Karmelo Anthony is just one member of a much larger movement, and a much larger demographic — one that would happily use your dead body to raise half a million dollars, even as they taunt your grieving parents and claim to be oppressed. 
They will blow the money on cars and mansions, and in the meantime, they&#8217;ll hire the worst lawyers known to mankind — a strategy that might actually benefit them from a legal perspective. 
Thanks to the Civil Rights Act, schools cannot discipline these people. Neighborhoods can&#8217;t keep them out. All you can do is be ready to defend yourself, because as this trial has revealed, no one else has any interest in doing so.

Anti-White Violence Reaches Disturbing Levels After This Horrific Attack

A man from Sudan was arrested after being caught on video apparently attempting to behead another man in the streets of Northern Ireland.  
Law enforcement identified a Sudanese national as the man shown in an extremely <a href="https://x.com/TPointUK/status/2064116183012429857">graphic video</a> pinning another man down and repeatedly stabbing the victim in the face and neck in the streets of Belfast. Bystanders stepped in and attempted to wrestle the man off the victim.

“He’s trying to cut his head off!” a person can be heard shouting in the video. 
The man was arrested on attempted murder charges, but authorities have yet to release his name. The victim, identified as a man in his 40s, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. 
Police first identified the attacker as a man from Somalia, but later determined he was from Sudan. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said that his &#8220;understanding is the individual was given leave to remain in Northern Ireland,” <a href="https://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/area/north-belfast-newtownabbey/north-belfast/north-belfast-attempted-beheading-police-tell-media-briefing-suspect-given-leave-to-remain-in-ni-and-attack-not-terror-related/a/156285563.html">according</a> to the Belfast Telegraph. 
Nigel Farage, the leader of the conservative Reform UK party, called for full transparency over the attack. Farage has been a critic of mass migration into the United Kingdom and has called for a freeze on immigration. 
“What happened in Belfast last night is horrific,” he <a href="https://x.com/Nigel_Farage/status/2064251817630863694">said</a>. “The authorities must reveal the identity and status of the attacker immediately. The public are entitled to the truth.”
In the wake of the brutal stabbing, Northern Ireland Justice Minister Naomi Long said she was scared about backlash to minorities and said the attack should not be used to fuel “dangerous narratives.” 
&#8220;I also know there are many people in our community people from ethnic minority backgrounds who are terrified today about any kind of retaliation or backlash against them, which we have seen in the past,&#8221; she told the BBC. 
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the attack, but did not note the identity or origin of the suspect. 
“The horrific attack in Belfast last night is sickening,” <a href="https://x.com/Keir_Starmer/status/2064273082580140525">said</a> Starmer. “I have absolutely no tolerance for abhorrent scenes of violence like this on our streets. My thoughts are first and foremost with the victim, and I thank the first responders, including members of the public who intervened.”
Hilary Benn, the secretary of state for Northern Ireland, told people to remain “calm” while the investigation into the attack played out. 
“The attack last night in Belfast was deeply shocking and all our thoughts are with the victim, who is seriously injured in hospital, and with his loved ones,” he <a href="https://x.com/hilarybennmp/status/2064290080303227131">said</a>. “I would like to thank the individuals who showed extraordinary bravery in coming to his aid.”
Immigration has long been a controversial issue in the United Kingdom as protesters urge an end to mass immigration from third-world countries. There are few annoyances worse than when a nice young man flips around a tiny virtual tablet that reads &#8220;add tip&#8221; after he did all the work of rotating his body 75 degrees to grab you an $18 beer from a fridge.
It&#8217;s true: Tipping culture has gotten out of hand in the United States. I try to tip generously because I used to work as a delivery driver. I know the struggle of trying to scrape together some cash at the mercy of strangers who are tasked with making up the difference between the cost of living and your poverty base wage.
That only applies to actual services, though: waiting, bartending, delivery, etc. There are plenty of cases (such as the stadium beer kiosk) where the expectation of tipping is wrongly bleeding Americans dry.
And don&#8217;t get me started on communal tipping. I can&#8217;t think of anything more demoralizing than getting a fat tip due to your excellent service, only to be forced to pool it with the rest of your coworkers who didn&#8217;t do a thing to earn it.
My disdain for this excess of American culture changed, though, when I recently took a trip to Ireland.
In Ireland, like much of Europe, they don&#8217;t do tipping the way we do. You can tack on 5 to 10% for your waiter or bartender if the service is particularly good, but it&#8217;s not expected. And a service charge is often already included. You don&#8217;t get sideways looks for just paying the tab and leaving like you would stateside.
My initial reaction to this was relief. Finally, some simplicity in this life. The meals may be a bit more expensive because the labor cost is factored into price, but simply being able to pay and go without doing extra math and giving a performance review at the end of the meal would be nice.
Things began to change with each passing day. When we had our first sit-down dinner of the trip, I couldn&#8217;t help but notice how inattentive the waitstaff was. No refills of water. Twenty minutes passing by between being seated and having our order taken. Want to get some extra condiments on the side after the food arrives? Good luck.
I thought it may be an anomaly, but then the same experience kept repeating itself every single time we had dinner during the trip. I will say this didn&#8217;t extend to bartending service — I&#8217;m talking strictly about sit-down meals here — but without a single exception, the service was just dreadful, inattentive, and slow.
It was the type of experience that makes one pause and reflect on the bigger picture. I&#8217;m not saying that Europe&#8217;s poor table service is a direct consequence of a culture that stifles innovation and snuffs out the ambition of the individual for the good of the collective, but it is striking that we don&#8217;t have this issue in hyper-capitalist America.
Now, you may be thinking this was my fault somehow. Maybe my Americanness was an affront to the waitstaff&#8217;s European sensibilities. I don&#8217;t think so. I wasn&#8217;t acting visibly foreign, and the staff were very polite and personable in every interaction. I gathered no sense of disdain whatsoever — only indifference.
My only conclusion can be that these workers did not put an American-level effort in because they didn&#8217;t have to. There was no incentive to give me good service, so they didn&#8217;t. The system failed.
The experience has certainly changed my perspective on tipping culture. Yes, it remains excessive in certain American contexts. But there&#8217;s a wisdom to <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G._K._Chesterton#Chesterton's_fence">Chesterton&#8217;s fence</a>: If something has been around a while, it just might serve a purpose you&#8217;ll miss when it&#8217;s gone.

I Left America Mocking Tipping Culture. Europe Changed My Mind Fast.

A judge in the United Kingdom convicted a Christian pastor on Thursday for preaching on one of the Bible’s most well-known verses outside of a hospital that performs abortions. 
Pastor Clive Johnston was fined over $600 by Judge Peter King for preaching on John 3:16 inside a so-called “Safe Access Zone” outside the Causeway Hospital in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. Northern Ireland&#8217;s “Abortion Services (Safe Access Zones) Act” sets up buffer zones outside facilities where abortions are done, restricting protests, sidewalk counseling, or other pro-life activities. 
Johnston was prosecuted after leading an open-air Sunday service outside the Causeway Hospital on July 7, 2024, that did not mention abortion. Prosecutors accused him of attempting to influence a “protected person” or “recklessly” behaving in a way that could influence a person. 
“This is a dark day for Christian freedom,” he said after the conviction. “And yet the buffer zones law is so broad that holding a Sunday service has been found to be a criminal offence. And at 78 years of age I find myself, for the first time, convicted of a crime.”
“I know it was an unusual place to hold an open-air service but that was the point: There shouldn’t be any public spaces in Northern Ireland where you can be prosecuted and convicted simply for preaching the gospel,” he added. 
Video from the day of the open-air service shows a police officer warning Johnston that he may only share the gospel in a &#8216;safe&#8217; chaplaincy room inside the hospital.
“However, if you are reckless as to the effect that they could have on patients, staff, or any protected person, then you may be committing an offense,” the officer said. 
“But while you&#8217;re out here in the safe access zone, any act in that area, which may” dissuade a “protected person” from using a “service” could be an offense, the officer said.

Johnston was supported in his legal defense by The Christian Institute, a United Kingdom-based organization devoted to “upholding the truths of the Bible.” The organization’s director, Ciarán Kelly, said they would help Johnston look at appealing the ruling. 
“Despite assurances to the contrary when this legislation was being considered, we now see that an already controversial and deeply unjust law has now been selectively applied to criminalise gospel preaching,” Kelly said. “If the ruling stands it will represent a shocking new restriction on freedom of religion and freedom of speech so we will be helping Clive to consider the options for appeal.”
Last month, a State Department spokesman <a href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/us/news/2026/04/16/us-prosecution-british-pastor-abortion-clinic/">said</a> that the United States was monitoring the case with concern. 
“The UK’s persecution of silent prayer represents not only an egregious violation of the fundamental right to free speech and religious liberty, but also a concerning departure from the shared values that ought to underpin US-UK relations,” a spokesman told The Telegraph.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani used a St. Patrick&#8217;s Day event to complain about &#8220;genocide&#8221; in Gaza, arguing that the Irish and Palestinians could relate over their shared histories marked by oppression.
Mamdani joined former Irish President Mary Robinson at a breakfast honoring Irish New Yorkers, and he used his remarks to praise Robinson for her support for Palestinians.

&#8220;I say this as over the past few years, as we’ve witnessed a genocide unfold before our eyes, there has been deafening silence from so many. For those who have long cared about universal human rights and the extension of them to Palestinians, silence, however, is nothing new – for Palestinians are so often left to weep alone,&#8221; Mamdani said. &#8220;Yet former President Robinson has never been silent.&#8221;
&#8220;The story of the Irish, both in Ireland and in New York City, is at one time a story of oppression, of subjugation, and of discrimination,&#8221; Mamdani said, arguing that it was &#8220;no coincidence&#8221; that the Irish would see their own history reflected in Gaza. &#8220;Who can better understand those who weep than those who have been made to weep for so long?&#8221;
Robinson, who served as President of Ireland from 1990-1997, followed Mamdani&#8217;s lead, and after saying that St. Patrick&#8217;s Day was a time to celebrate Irish culture and traditions, it was also a time to remember all those who may yet be &#8220;living under the shadow of war and suffering.&#8221;
&#8220;For many Irish people, these realities resonate deeply, as the mayor has said. Our own history holds memories of famine, exile and conflict. Perhaps because of that, many recognize echoes of Ireland’s past and the suffering of others today and the pain of displacement and the enduring human longing for dignity, justice, and self-determination,&#8221; she said.
Mamdani referenced Irish support for a Palestinian state in his official message to New Yorkers as well.
