When high school students tried to form a Turning Point USA chapter, the vice president of a local Democratic club in Texas rallied her Facebook group to pressure teachers against sponsoring it.
Nathalie Herpin, a parent and the <a href="https://www.springbranchdems.org/about-us/leadership/">vice president</a> of the Spring Valley Democrats, posted an “urgent request” on Facebook, urging members to block students’ efforts to launch a Turning Point USA chapter at Stratford High School in Houston’s Spring Branch Independent School District.
“Please please please send emails to two teachers who are rumored to have agreed to sponsoring a club that will sow division and hate among our students,” Herpin wrote. “This is dangerous territory, and it would help if those teachers knew that their consideration was not appreciated by the remainder of the student body.”
Herpin then mentioned Denise Bell, the chair of Harris County’s &#8220;Moms for Liberty&#8221; chapter, stating that she was “pushing for Stratford students to start a TurningPoint USA club at the school.&#8221; Herpin referenced a private GroupMe chat, saying Bell had added &#8220;the Gulf Coast Representative of ‘Club America’ which is the Turning Point USA student club name &#8211; but it is absolutely the same organization.”
“Without principal&#8217;s approval, they already decided their first meeting is Friday and already started an instagram page,” she continued. Revealing information from a private GroupMe chat, she named two people — whose names were later redacted — as “the two who are being claimed as sponsors (per the GroupMe).”
Then she launched into an attack on TPUSA, writing:

She followed with an outrageous statement that totally mischaracterized the assassin of Charlie Kirk, framing him as a disgruntled right-winger: “Given the famous founder having recently been murdered by an individual motivated by interpersonal rivalry (Nick Fuentes or Charlie Kirk being the better far-right activist), it is very risky for students to bring that kind of potential inflammatory rivalry into school halls, especially with the rate of school shootings in the united states.”
She then added this:

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) arrested more than 200 illegal alien child sex offenders in the Houston area in just the last six months, capturing more of the heinous criminals than were arrested in the entirety of the 2024 fiscal year.
A whopping 214 illegal aliens charged or convicted of engaging in sexual conduct with minors have been arrested by ICE in the Houston area, with the federal agency attributing its success to the whole-of-government effort to crack down on illegal immigration.
“Bringing together the resources and expertise of the entire federal law enforcement community to confront the overwhelming surge of illegal immigration that we saw over the past four years has resulted in the arrest and removal of historic numbers of violent criminal aliens, transnational gang members and child sex offenders,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston acting Field Office Director Paul McBride charged.
Among the illegal alien sex offenders captured by ICE is thrice-deported Mexican national Jesus Gutierrez Mireles, a 67-year-old with convictions for aggravated sexual assault of a child and driving while intoxicated. There’s also 48-year-old Mexican national Jose Zebra, who was convicted of two counts of aggravated sexual assault of a minor and sexual indecency with a minor.
Twice-deported 37-year-old Salvadoran national Manuel Antonio Castro-Juarez was convicted of sexual assault of a minor and illegal entry, while 40-year-old Mexican national and four-time deportee Jose Guadalupe Meza has convictions for theft and sexual assault of a child.
Among the 214 illegal alien child sex criminals is Mexican national Sergio Rolando Galvan Guerrero, who has been deported three times and was convicted of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
“While we still have a long way to go to truly get this crisis under control, the strides we have made in just six months to make our local communities safer are substantial, and our officers continue to work tirelessly every day to get the worst of the worst criminal aliens out of Southeast Texas to return our communities to places we can all enjoy,” McBride noted.
Agents in Houston have captured scores of illegal alien criminals since President Trump took office in January, with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/plane-hijacker-child-predators-murderers-ice-nabs-more-than-1300-illegals-in-houston">more tha</a>n 1,300 illegal aliens being captured in the area in June alone.
Federal agents and their state law enforcement partners also <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-100-illegals-captured-in-colony-ridge-deportation-raids">captured</a> more than 100 illegal aliens, including multiple child sexual predators and a cartel member wanted for murder, at Colony Ridge, a land development just outside of Houston that The Daily Wire exposed as a hotbed for illegal aliens.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents captured more than 1,300 illegal aliens in the Houston area in June, nabbing a plane hijacker, child predators, and murderers.
ICE agents and members of Texas law enforcement arrested an astonishing 1,361 illegal aliens in the Houston area last month, including Adermis Wilson-Gonzalez, a 56-year-old Cuban national with a conviction for hijacking a plane.
Wilson-Gonzalez served 20 years in prison after he was convicted in 2003 for hijacking a plane traveling from Cuba to Florida. The man was <a href="https://www.lmtonline.com/local/article/laredo-sector-usbp-agents-assists-ice-arrests-20766632.php">released</a> from prison into the United States before being apprehended by law enforcement agents late last month. He was just one of many criminal illegal aliens caught last month in southeast Texas.
“The brave men and women of ICE continue to work tirelessly around the clock targeting dangerous criminal aliens to restore integrity to our nation’s immigration system and bolster public safety in our communities,” said Gabriel Martinez, the acting Field Office Director for ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston.
“The number of dangerous criminal aliens that they removed from local communities across Southeast Texas last month is just another example of their selfless and unyielding efforts to return our local communities to places where we can all raise our families without having to worry about child predators, gang members, or other violent criminal aliens preying on our loved ones.”
Authorities also arrested 32 child predators in their enforcement operations in the Texas region. Javier Escobar Gonzalez, a 51-year-old Mexican national, has a long criminal history, including a conviction for sexual indecency with a minor. The man has also been convicted of criminal trespass with a deadly weapon, driving while intoxicated, and the unauthorized use of a firearm.
Jose Meza, a 40-year-old Mexican illegal alien, was convicted of sexual assault of a minor and theft. Meza has illegally entered the United States four different times, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) says.
ICE caught nine different murderers, including Luis Pablo Vasquez-Estolano, a 29-year-old Mexican national who had been deported from the United States six times prior to his June 10 arrest. The illegal alien has convictions for homicide, aggravated robbery, burglary of a vehicle, and drug possession.
In addition to capturing the plane hijacker, murderers, and child sex offenders, the federal agents and their state law enforcement partners caught 16 members of gangs or cartels.
Among them was 47-year-old Mexican national Arnulfo Olivares Cervantes, a former member of the Mexicles gang. Cervantes has convictions for attempted murder, evading arrest, illegal entry, and drug possession, as well as two convictions for trafficking cocaine. The Mexican national illegally entered the United States on four different occasions.
Houston has been the site of several immigration raids since President Donald Trump took office in January. Federal agents arrested more than <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/more-than-500-criminal-illegal-aliens-captured-by-ice-in-week-long-houston-raids">600 illegal aliens</a> in Houston in a weeklong operation in March. More than 500 of those arrested had criminal records beyond illegal entry.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced Monday that a 48-year-old Houston woman had been arrested for allegedly performing illegal abortions. 
Paxton <a href="https://www.texasattorneygeneral.gov/news/releases/attorney-general-ken-paxton-announces-arrest-houston-area-abortionist-and-crackdown-clinics">said</a> that Maria Margarita Rojas was providing illegal abortions in the Northwest Houston area and was operating a network of illegal clinics. Rojas was charged with one count of performing an illegal abortion and practicing medicine without a license. 
“In Texas, life is sacred. I will always do everything in my power to protect the unborn, defend our state’s pro-life laws, and work to ensure that unlicensed individuals endangering the lives of women by performing illegal abortions are fully prosecuted,” Paxton said. “Texas law protecting life is clear, and we will hold those who violate it accountable.”

Paxton said that an investigation from his Law Enforcement Division found that Rojas operated multiple clinics in the Houston area including Clinica Waller Latinoamericana in Waller, Clinica Latinoamericana Telge in Cypress, and Latinoamericana Medical Clinic in Spring. These clinics were allegedly operated by individuals who pretended to be medical professionals without licenses. 
According to Paxton, Rojas performed illegal abortions at these clinics in violation of Texas’ Human Life Protection Act. Paxton said the case was referred to him by Waller County District Attorney Sean Whittmore. 
Rojas could face a penalty of at least $100,000 if found guilty of performing an illegal abortion. 
Paxton’s actions were praised by pro-life groups, like Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) captured more than 500 criminal illegal aliens in a week-long series of raids in Houston, knabbing alleged murderers, rapists, and drug traffickers.
The series of ICE operations resulted in the arrest of 646 illegal aliens, including 543 of whom had been charged or convicted of a crime after illegally entering the United States.
ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Houston Special Agent in Charge Chad Plantz celebrated the operations, which were conducted in coordination with local police, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and multiple federal law enforcement agencies.
“In just one week working alongside our counterparts from federal, state and local law enforcement, ICE HSI special agents successfully executed 71 criminal arrest warrants and made 554 administrative arrests that included illegally present human smugglers, gang members, human traffickers, child sex offenders, drug traffickers and weapons traffickers,” Plantz <a href="https://www.ice.gov/news/releases/ice-arrests-543-criminal-aliens-7-gang-members-houston-area-during-week-long-multi">said</a>. “These collective efforts have made our local communities significantly safer and strengthened our national security and border security.”
Among those captured were 140 illegal aliens charged or convicted of violent crimes like homicide, aggravated assault, or domestic violence. Another 34 illegal aliens had been charged or convicted of sexual offenses, including rape, aggravated sexual assault of a minor, or possession of child pornography.
The operation also resulted in the capture of 52 illegal aliens charged or convicted of drug crimes, and 38 illegal aliens had been charged or convicted of firearm offenses. Ninety-three illegal aliens had been charged or convicted of driving under the influence.
“In recent years, some of the world’s most dangerous fugitives, transnational gang members and criminal aliens have taken advantage of the crisis at our nation’s southern border to illegally enter the U.S.,” charged ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations Houston Field Office Director Bret Bradford. “After illegally entering the country, many of these criminal aliens have gone on to commit violent crime and reign terror on law-abiding residents.”
The arrests come after Colony Ridge, a sprawling land development north of Houston that The Daily Wire revealed is a magnet for illegal aliens, was recently <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nearly-100-illegals-captured-in-colony-ridge-deportation-raids">raided by ICE</a> and the Texas Department of Public Safety, resulting in the arrest of 118 illegal aliens.

A Republican Texas state representative has introduced legislation to improve property sale transparency in an attempt to address issues surrounding Colony Ridge, a sprawling Texas development that’s become notorious for attracting illegal aliens through its marketing operations and loan schemes.
Rep. Janis Holt of Texas’ 18th State House district introduced the legislation, House Bill 2519, as a response to concerns surrounding the 60-square mile land development north of Houston that the Department of Justice and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau have accused of rapidly flipping properties and churning buyers through a cycle of foreclosure.
The legislation would establish a more thorough record-keeping system for property sales for government use.

“One of the major issues in my district is Colony Ridge. Colony Ridge is one of the largest — if not the largest — illegal immigrant settlement in Texas and probably in the United States,” Holt said in a video posted on X by the Texas House Republican Caucus. “I am laser-focused on finding solutions to the problems that surround Colony Ridge.”
“My signature legislation will be to create a form to track real property transfers in order to bring transparency to all property sales, including properties bought with cash,” Holt stated, adding that the bill would also reduce title fraud cases.
The legislation could provide additional clarity as to who exactly lives in Colony Ridge. An <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/inside-colony-ridge-the-fastest-growing-development-in-the-u-s-is-a-magnet-for-illegal-immigrants">initial investigation</a> by The Daily Wire in 2023 found that Colony Ridge appears to market specifically to foreign buyers, encouraging potential customers to &#8220;own land in the United States&#8221; and communicating with them via WhatsApp, a platform commonly used for international communication.
Federal authorities have recently caught numerous criminals in the development, including one Guatemalan illegal alien smuggler who is believed to have been involved in a “mass casualty event” in which more than 50 people died when a tractor-trailer crashed. The man owned at least three homes in Colony Ridge as he hid from federal authorities.

Deportation operations are now <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ice-raids-begin-in-colony-ridge-texas-development-known-for-attracting-illegal-aliens">underway</a> in Colony Ridge, with federal immigration enforcement agents believed to have captured an El Salvadorean illegal alien wanted for murder, among others.
Holt also discussed the issue with President Donald Trump’s Border Czar, Tom Homan, in early January. In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Holt4Texas/posts/addressing-the-challenges-posed-by-colony-ridge-requires-coordinated-efforts-at-/465747373271723/">Facebook post</a>, Holt explained that “addressing the challenges posed by Colony Ridge requires coordinated efforts at the federal, state and local levels &#8221; and called it “a priority that demands action and accountability.”
“I enjoyed my conversation with Border Czar Tom Homan. We will coordinate with his office and attack this issue head on,” she added.
Holt took the seat previously held by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/texas-politician-tied-to-colony-ridge-ousted-by-voters-in-primary">Ernest Bailes</a>, a Republican who, The Daily Wire reported, received campaign donations from Colony Ridge developer William “Trey” Harris. Colony Ridge was one of the core issues raised in the primary, with Bailes attempting to <a href="https://x.com/bradj_TX/status/1763307701889610101">defend</a> his record on the development while other ads <a href="https://x.com/bradj_TX/status/1763307705886797940">attacked</a> him for it.

Singer <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/post-malone">Post Malone</a> gave a single mom an unexpected gift during her shift as a bartender on <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/christmas">Christmas</a> Eve.
Renee Brown, 36, told her story to the outlet <a href="https://musicmayhemmagazine.com/post-malone-surprises-struggling-single-mom-with-life-changing-20000-tip-a-christmas-miracle/">Music Mayhem</a>. The restaurant worker said she was sad to be scheduled to work during the holiday because it meant she couldn’t spend it with her 9-year-old daughter, Iliana. But her night took a turn when the “Sunflower” singer, whose real name is Austin Post, made a stop at The Railyard in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/houston">Houston</a>, Texas, during her shift.
“The day started off super slow, and I was just taking it as it was, trying to be in a good mood for others while dealing with not being able to spend Christmas Eve with my daughter,” Brown told the outlet. “We usually bake cookies and watch Christmas movies, and this was the first time I wasn’t able to do that.”
The small neighborhood kept getting busier, and then Post showed up with “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” singer, Shaboozey. 
“I initially didn’t realize he was there until one of my coworkers from my second job came inside and told me that Austin [Post Malone] was outside on the patio,” she said. “I thought he was kidding with me at first, then I kept seeing people go outside [and] I kept making drinks for like 30 minutes before curiosity got the best of me, and lo and behold, he was there.”
“I told all my regulars not to be weird and bug him as it’s a neighborhood dive bar, and I’m sure he picked a place like that to feel a sense of normalcy,” Brown continued, mentioning how the vibes shifted when the famous recording artists arrived. “It lifted the spirits of the entire bar. It was amazing to see everyone so happy and seeing how kind he was to all the people that spend their days with me on the regular.”
Brown said the biggest surprise at all came at the end of the night.
“Everyone that he was with was also so kind and inviting, we had a great night jamming to songs on the jukebox. Then came time for last call and to close. When Austin asked for his check, he didn’t have one because many regulars and his friends bought his beverages,” Brown said. She explained how Post was insistent that he be charged for something, which led to him leaving a tip.  
“So he asked me to ring him up for a penny or anything, so I did. I continued my close and collected all my checks and started to enter my tips. Then I got to his. It was a tip for $20,000,” she told the outlet.
“I immediately broke down crying. It was a very emotional night already being away from home, being swamped behind the bar, trying to process that they were even there and then the tip on top,” she said.
Brown added, “I finally got a chance to stop cleaning and talk to him some more and thank him. I know I was crying and thanking him, but he has no idea exactly how much this meant to me.”
“I work two jobs and homeschool my daughter. I’m constantly exhausted. We’ve been without a car for two years. And recently moved after losing everything and starting over from scratch in August of 2024,” she said. 
“This put me in a position to at least be able to get a way back and forth to work and pay up on rent and save a bit. I’m trying to save up to start a business, so I don’t have to continue working two jobs and be able to spend more time with my daughter. Things have been extremely difficult, and this was truly a blessing that I can’t fully put into words. The visit alone was absolutely amazing and something I could talk about and remember for the rest of my life.”
Brown concluded, “If this message reaches him, I know I told him that night how grateful I am, but I’d like to reiterate that he helped me in ways I can’t even begin to explain. My best friend [Matthew] and I have been huge fans of him for years, and it was amazing we got to meet him and experience that moment.”
The bartender also posted about her experience on Instagram right after it happened and included photos of herself with Post.

Federal authorities have arrested and charged a 28-year-old Muslim man in Texas with attempting to provide material support to ISIS.
Anas Said was arrested in Houston last week after the FBI executed search warrants on his residence, vehicle, and electronic devices.
&#8220;Analysis of the seized devices ultimately revealed Said’s activities relating to the creation and dissemination of propaganda on behalf of ISIS,&#8221; the Department of Justice said in a statement.
The propaganda was found on &#8220;multiple social media accounts&#8221; linked to Said, which contained &#8220;messages and posts that allegedly revealed that Said supported ISIS and the violent attacks carried out in its name.&#8221;
If convicted, Said faces up to 20 years in federal prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
His attorney, Balemar Zuniga, downplayed the charges and the claim that his client was planning an attack, saying: &#8220;The indictment only alleges that he supported a terrorist group through the production of videos and propaganda.&#8221;
However, after being taken into custody, the FBI said that the suspect admitted to researching how to conduct an attack on local military recruiting centers, offering his home as safe sanctuary to ISIS operatives, bragging he would commit a &#8220;9/11-style&#8221; attack if he had the resources, and attempting to produce ISIS propaganda.

The report said that he allegedly began supporting ISIS after he and his family returned to the U.S. from Lebanon around 2015.
Meta informed federal law enforcement that Said had 11 Facebook accounts that he was allegedly using to support ISIS.
Said&#8217;s family members had &#8220;expressed their concerns&#8221; about his activities in interviews with law enforcement, the report said.
When the FBI executed its search warrant last week, he allegedly refused to comply and tried to destroy his phone, the report said.

Fans are massively disappointed that pop star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/beyonce">Beyoncé</a> only made a brief appearance at <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris&#8217;</a> campaign rally in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/houston">Houston</a> over the weekend.
Despite no confirmation that the 32-time Grammy Award winner would perform, rallygoers expected to hear Beyoncé sing and not just speak. The 43-year-old Houston native delivered a speech, which had an estimated attendance of 30,000, and endorsed Harris for the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/2024-election">2024 presidential election</a>.
“I’m here as a mother, a mother who cares about the world our children live in, a world where we have the freedom to control our bodies, a world where we are not divided, our past or present or future,” the singer said.
Instead, the hopeful fans were treated to a concert by 81-year-old country artist Willie Nelson.

Many fans headed to X to complain about Beyoncé deciding not to perform.
“So let me get this straight, Kamala Harris baited people with a free Beyoncé concert and then had Willie Nelson perform,” one social media user <a href="https://x.com/overitall69/status/1850175219442307294">shared</a>. “Talk about a bunch of pissed-off concert-goers.”
“She can’t even deliver on promises to her own followers with a Beyoncé performance, but yes she will totally close the border and stuff,” another <a href="https://x.com/miguelifornia/status/1850152239135920198">said</a> of Harris.
A third accused the Democratic party of baiting voters with a “free Beyoncé concert” and delivering a “washed up Willie Nelson” instead, likening that to the overall tactics of the party.
Beyoncé previously allowed the Harris campaign to use her songs “Freedom” and “Lemonade” for promotional purposes. 
This isn’t the first time the “Texas Hold ‘Em” star was the subject of rumors related to political events. Fans were also left disappointed in August when outlets started reporting that Beyoncé might perform at the Democratic National Convention. Instead, the headliner of the final night’s event was the pop singer Pink.
Helping to fuel the rumors was Beyoncé&#8217;s previous promotion of Democratic politicians. She put on a concert celebrating Hillary Clinton in 2016 and performed at Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.

Rumors are circulating that pop star <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/beyonce">Beyoncé</a> will appear at a rally for Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris</a> in her hometown of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/houston">Houston</a> on Friday.
She is set to be joined at the event by her mother, Tina Knowles, and country music singer Willie Nelson, per anonymous sources who spoke to the <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/elections/2024/10/24/beyonce-kamala-harris-houston-rally/">Washington Post</a>. It’s also being speculated that the 32-time Grammy Award winner will perform at the rally, NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/beyonce-expected-perform-harris-rally-houston-rcna177048">reported</a>.
So far Beyoncé has not officially endorsed Harris for president despite months of speculation and pressure from fans. The pop star did allow her songs “Freedom” and &#8220;Lemonade&#8221; to be used in Harris’ campaign materials, though.
Fans were convinced that Beyoncé would perform on the final night of the Democratic National Convention in August, but those rumors proved unfounded, and no appearance was ever planned. Instead, the final day included a performance by Pink.
The 43-year-old singer joins a host of other famous musicians who have endorsed Harris or appeared on the campaign trail. On Tuesday night, Eminem took the stage to introduce former President Barack Obama at a Harris rally in Detroit. Bruce Springsteen is also headlining rallies in key swing states as the election heats up in its final weeks.

While Beyoncé hasn’t gone all in for Harris yet, she has a history of supporting Democratic candidates.  The recording artist endorsed the Joe Biden/Harris ticket in 2020 and put on a performance celebrating Hillary Clinton in 2016. Beyoncé also performed at Barack Obama’s second inauguration in 2013.
Though Texas is not one of the hotly contested swing states in play, there is a closer Senate race between incumbent Republican Senator Ted Cruz and the Democratic nominee, Representative Colin Allred.
Per the NBC News report, Harris will focus her remarks at the rally on the topic of abortion. Texas is one state that instituted an abortion ban after six weeks of pregnancy following the overturning of Roe v. Wade in 2022.

Actor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/celebrities">Akili McDowell</a>, best known for his roles in the Showtime drama “Billions” and OWN network’s “David Makes Man,” has been arrested and charged with <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/murder">murder</a>.
The charges stem from the parking lot shooting death of Cesar Peralta, which occurred in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/houston">Houston</a> on July 20. McDowell was previously charged with theft on August 1 and subsequently arrested for murder on August 2, per <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/08/05/entertainment/billions-actor-akili-mcdowell-arrested-and-charged-with-murder/">The New York Post</a>. 
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to an incident at the parking lot of an apartment complex at 13503 North Thorntree, where they discovered an adult male pronounced dead at the scene, who was later identified as 20-year-old Peralta. The victim had sustained gunshot wounds.

McDowell, 21, was still being held on a $400,000 bond at the Harris County Jail Facility as of Monday, per The Hollywood Reporter. The actor’s relation to the victim was still unclear as of Tuesday, and how McDowell responded to the charges is also unknown. Police say the investigation is ongoing.
The actor played the character ​​Savion Williams in two episodes of “Billions.” He also had a starring role in “David Makes Man,” a coming-of-age drama about a teenage prodigy named David (McDowell) who lived in the projects in South Florida while attending a school for academically gifted students. 
He is also slated to star in the movie The Waterboyz, which is about two men who choose very different paths in life. One tries to follow the rules, and the other creates chaos.
McDowell, who was 16 when he was cast in &#8220;David Makes Man,&#8221; reflected on his role and the series&#8217; message during a 2019 <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QzkfFzu4p8&amp;t=3s">interview</a> with Oprah. The American Federation of Teachers&#8217; 88th National Convention centered not on workplace conditions or the resolution of deep issues rampant throughout the nation’s classrooms but underscored the union’s longstanding devotion to progressive politics, culminating in a resounding endorsement of presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
The convention, which hosts AFT delegates from across the nation to vote on resolutions which guide the union’s internal operations for the year ahead, was markedly partisan as the infamously progressive union preps its members for election season.
Resolutions passed by this year’s delegates covered a swath of hot button political issues:
“The AFT <a href="https://www.aft.org/resolution/committing-end-lifetime-alert-physical-and-psychological-violence-against-lgbtqia-youth" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will</a> recommit resources,” for example, to “support LGBTQIA+ affirming and inclusive school environments and curriculum,” according to a resolution regarding “physical and psychological violence” against queer youth.
Another <a href="https://www.aft.org/resolution/opposing-overreach-us-supreme-court" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a>, “Opposing the Overreach of the U.S. Supreme Court,” details the union’s commitment to “reverse the decisions” of those Justices AFT accuses of “eliminating guarantees of the fundamental rights and freedoms of the American people.”
According to a <a href="https://www.aft.org/resolution/what-stake-2024-elections-democratic-republic-committed-liberty-and-justice-all" target="_blank" rel="noopener">third</a>, “the basic institutions and principles of U.S. democracy…are under attack” by “Donald Trump and the ultra-right MAGA faction.” In addition to democracy, AFT writes, Republicans have attacked public education through “voucher schemes,” reproductive freedom through “draconian anti-abortion laws,” and “the very humanity of marginalized and stigmatized communities.”
But the key <a href="https://www.aft.org/resolution/endorsement-kamala-harris-president" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a> passed by the AFT was the union’s “Endorsement of Kamala Harris for President.”
“Kamala Harris has a clear record under the Biden-Harris administration to compare with Donald Trump’s, offering voters a stark choice,” AFT explained. The union pledges to mobilize its members in support of Harris’s presidential campaign, plus join the rest of Big Labor in its “collective effort to elect Kamala Harris.”
Amid talk of a variety of progressive topics, AFT’s support for Harris was constant.
Before delegates arrived in Houston, the union’s executive council preemptively <a href="https://www.aft.org/press-release/aft-executive-council-unanimously-endorses-kamala-harris-president" target="_blank" rel="noopener">pushed</a> a unanimous call on AFT members to ratify its endorsement of Harris for the American presidency.
AFT President Randi Weingarten’s keynote address amplified strong support for Harris, through which “progress is possible.” “But so is the eradication of the rights and progress we hold dear,” continued Weingarten, through former President Donald Trump, who poses an “existential threat to democracy and freedom.”
Throughout the convention, among the <a href="https://www.aft.org/news/convention-sneak-peek-were-fighting-better-life-all" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speakers</a> who addressed the union in support of Harris included United Auto Workers President Shawn Fain and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson.
Harris, whose address was the convention’s grand finale, again emphasized the responsibility of educators to vote in support of her dedication to “freedom, compassion, and rule of law,” in opposition to Right-wing “chaos, fear, and hate.”
A vote against her campaign, Harris emphasized, would “return America to a dark past.”
AFT’s longstanding devotion to progressive causes and candidates is nothing new. For years, the union has <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/media/teachers-unions-spend-big-democrats-ahead-midterm-elections" target="_blank" rel="noopener">transferred</a> millions directly from the pockets of dues-paying teachers to its Democratic friends.
Though American teachers continue to <a href="https://www.the74million.org/article/teachers-union-membership-drops-by-59000-across-the-nation/#:~:text=The%20National%20Education%20Association%20and,member%20loss%20the%20previous%20year." target="_blank" rel="noopener">flee</a> AFT in search of refuge from the progressive agenda included in membership, this year’s convention emphasizes that the union’s loyalty to the left-wing will not fade anytime soon.
According to a <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/social-trends/2024/04/04/teachers-views-on-the-state-of-public-k-12-education/#:~:text=A%20majority%20of%20public%20K,or%20lean%20toward%20the%20GOP." target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pew Research survey</a> of over 2,500 public K-12 school teachers, a significant percentage of teachers presumably disagree with their union’s endorsement. The AFT, however, couldn’t care less.
For the AFT, it seems as though disregarding the inconvenient interests of teachers unsupportive of union ideology is a worthy sacrifice in pursuit of the political agenda that continues to dominate Big Labor’s priorities across the board.
