House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) signaled over the weekend that he supports Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris&#8217; price control policies despite numerous economists warning that it would be a disaster.
Jeffries made the remarks during a Sunday interview with Jake Tapper on CNN&#8217;s &#8220;State of the Union&#8221; when asked about her plan to blame businesses for the inflation that the Biden-Harris administration caused and penalize them by implementing price controls.
Tapper said: &#8220;Jason Furman, who was the top economist for President Obama, said that her plan is not a good idea, quote, &#8216;The good case scenario is, price gouging is a message, not a reality. The bad case scenario is that this is a real proposal. You will end up with bigger shortages, less supply and ultimately risk higher prices and worse outcomes for consumers if you try to enforce this in a real way, which I don&#8217;t know if they would or wouldn&#8217;t do.'&#8221;
When asked if he supported Harris&#8217; proposed price controls, which are the hallmark of Marxist states like the Soviet Union and Venezuela, Jeffries responded: &#8220;Kamala Harris has articulated a very important plan to make sure that we are lowering costs for everyday Americans, that we are ending price gouging throughout the country, and that, of course, we are growing the middle class and making sure that everyday Americans can get ahead.&#8221;
&#8220;So we, as House Democrats, look forward to working with Kamala Harris to drive costs down,&#8221; he claimed.
When Tapper noted that even The Washington Post Editorial Board warned that the policy would be a disaster, Jeffries shifted to blaming the Trump administration for &#8220;catastrophes&#8221; that the Biden-Harris administration inherited, which, in his mind, included the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House</a> unveiled on Monday the members of the bipartisan task force to investigate the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-says-trump-agreed-to-interview-on-rally-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">attempted assassination</a> of former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, earlier this month.
Seven Republicans and six Democrats <a href="https://x.com/nicholaswu12/status/1817973672155693501" target="_blank" rel="noopener">will serve</a> on the panel, which the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-votes-to-establish-task-force-on-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House approved in a 416-0</a> vote last week. Many of the lawmakers chosen to be members have military, law enforcement, or prosecutorial experience.
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA), the lawmaker who represents the district where the rally shooting happened and introduced the resolution to create the task force, has been selected as chairman. Rep. Jason Crow (D-CO) will serve as ranking member.
The other GOP members will include Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green (R-TN) and Reps. David Joyce (R-OH), Laurel Lee (R-FL), Michael Waltz (R-FL), Clay Higgins (R-LA), and Pat Fallon (TX). And the Democrats will be rounded out by Reps. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), Chrissy Houlahan (D-PA), Glenn Ivey (D-MD), and Jared Moskowitz (D-FL).

Rep. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/bennie-thompson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Bennie Thompson</a> (D-MS), who served as chairman of the now-defunct January 6 Committee, was not selected to participate. The conservative House Freedom Caucus <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/conservatives-demand-jan-6-committee-chair-be-kept-off-trump-rally-shooting-task-force" target="_blank" rel="noopener">specifically demanded</a> Thompson not become a member after he introduced a bill that could strip Trump of Secret Service protection under certain conditions. Thompson <a href="https://x.com/emilybrooksnews/status/1816135746346164291" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly said</a> he had no interest in being on the task force.
According to Johnson&#8217;s office, the task force will take over all pending House inquiries into the rally shooting and has subpoena authority. The panel&#8217;s goals are to &#8220;understand what went wrong on the day of the attempted assassination,&#8221; &#8220;ensure accountability,&#8221; and to &#8220;prevent such an agency failure from ever happening again.&#8221;
The task force will &#8220;make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms,&#8221; Johnson&#8217;s office added.
House lawmakers have already begun to look into the attempted assassination of Trump, which resulted in the former president getting <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-confirms-trump-was-struck-by-a-bullet" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wounded by a bullet in his right ear</a>. One rallygoer was killed, and two others were injured. A Secret Service sniper shot and killed the gunman, identified as a 20-year-old man named Thomas Matthew Crooks.
One day after she testified before the House last week, Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/secret-service-director-resigns-amid-uproar-over-trump-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resigned</a> as she faced backlash over the security failure underlying the attack. FBI Director Christoper Wray <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/fbi-says-trump-rally-shooter-flew-drone-200-yards-away-from-stage-hours-before-assassination-attempt" target="_blank" rel="noopener">also testified</a> about his agency&#8217;s investigation into the shooting.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/u-s-house-of-representatives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House of Representatives</a> voted unanimously on Wednesday night to establish a task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> earlier this month at a campaign rally in western Pennsylvania. 
Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) introduced the <a href="https://docs.house.gov/billsthisweek/20240722/Updated%20Task%20Force%20Res%20-%20Kelly%20PA.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">resolution</a> that <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/house-resolution/1367/all-actions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> 416-0 in support. The vote comes as the Judiciary and Oversight Committees have begun conducting their own investigations into the attack on Trump. 
The resolution says that the task force will “investigate and fully examine all actions by any agency, Department, officer, or employee of the federal government, as well as State and local law enforcement or any other State or local government or private entities or individuals, related to the attempted assassination of Donald J. Trump on July 13, 2024 in Butler, Pennsylvania.”
According to the resolution, the task force must “issue a final report of its findings to the House not later than December 13, 2024, including any recommendations for legislative reforms necessary to prevent future security lapses.”
The task force will consist of 13 members, the majority of whom will be selected by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). On Tuesday, Johnson announced his support for the task force alongside House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
“The security failures that allowed an assassination attempt on Donald Trump’s life are shocking. In response, [Jeffries] and I are announcing a House Task Force made up of seven Republicans and six Democrats to thoroughly investigate the matter,” Johnson <a href="https://x.com/SpeakerJohnson/status/1815721812967203239" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> on X. “The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again.”
House lawmakers have already heard testimony about the attack from FBI Director Christopher Wray, law enforcement, and former Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle. 
Cheatle resigned on Tuesday after she was grilled on Monday over the security lapses that allowed 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks to access a rooftop only about 150 yards away from where Trump spoke during the rally. Crooks shot Trump, striking him in his right ear, critically injured two rally attendees, and killed 50-year-old Corey Comperatore.

According to New York&#8217;s Democratic Party Chair Jay Jacobs, the <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/06/26/nyregion/jamaal-bowman-squad-left.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reason for Bowman&#8217;s loss</a> was simple: &#8220;The voters in this district, and in other districts across the country, frankly, are just not buying some of the things that these candidates are selling. And now, moderate voters are getting engaged, they’re paying attention and they’re coming to the polls.&#8221;
But Usamah Andrabi, a spokesman for Justice Democrats, told The New York Times that the real problem was Jeffries — in spite of the fact that he had endorsed Bowman ahead of the primary.

&#8220;Let me ask you about another question that we&#8217;ll be watching and will make headlines this week. Hunter Biden, the president&#8217;s son, goes on trial for gun charges beginning tomorrow. President Biden said last year, quote, &#8220;My son has done nothing wrong,'&#8221; Alexander said.
&#8220;The Wall Street Journal, as you see here, the editorial board said at the time, quote, &#8216;That&#8217;s a highly inappropriate message from a president. He&#8217;s essentially telling prosecutors that they are wrong to bring an indictment because Hunter is innocent of any criminal behavior.&#8217; Why was it appropriate for President Biden to publicly comment on his son&#8217;s case?&#8221; Alexander continued.
&#8220;President Biden commented as a loving father, as I would hope any loving father would do. Hunter Biden of course is entitled, as was Donald Trump, to the presumption of innocence and to a trial by a jury of his peers,&#8221; Jeffries responded.
He was alluding to the criminal indictments that Trump is trying to fend off as the former president runs for re-election ahead of what may be a 2020 rematch in November against the elder Biden.
&#8220;And this Justice Department is going to proceed in that fashion, present the facts and the law,&#8221; Jeffries added. &#8220;And then we&#8217;ll all have to wait for a determination that is made by a jury as to Hunter Biden&#8217;s guilt or innocence.&#8221;
Hunter Biden faces two criminal indictments that arose out of the federal investigation into his conduct led by special counsel David Weiss. The first son has pleaded not guilty to gun and tax charges. His gun-related trial is expected to begin this week in Delaware.
A jury returned a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/verdict-trump-found-guilty-on-all-charges-in-hush-money-case" target="_blank" rel="noopener">guilty verdict</a> against Trump on all 34 felony counts of falsifying business records to allegedly cover up payments in a bid to conceal a tryst with adult film star Stormy Daniels as part of a “catch-and-kill” scheme to influence the 2016 election. Johnson addressed the debate over providing more aid to Ukraine, too, while discussing his visit with former President Donald Trump in Florida on Friday.
&#8220;He and I are 100% united on these big agenda items,&#8221; Johnson said of Trump. He added that Trump floated the idea of a loan concept. The speaker additionally raised the <a href="https://www.foreign.senate.gov/press/rep/release/risch-whitehouse-applaud-committee-passage-of-repo-act" target="_blank" rel="noopener">REPO Act</a> to use seized assets from Russian oligarchs to help fund Ukraine&#8217;s war effort.
&#8220;These are ideas that I think can get consensus, and that&#8217;s what we&#8217;ve been working through. We&#8217;ll send our package, we&#8217;ll put something together and send it to the Senate and get these obligations completed,&#8221; Johnson said.
Like other Republicans, Johnson chided Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) after the Senate <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/news/senate-blocks-14-3-billion-in-aid-for-israel/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blocked</a> a House-passed bill that would have provided $14.3 billion in emergency aid to Israel with an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offset.
&#8220;What a concept, we took from the IRS expansion slush fund to pay for the Israel priority,&#8221; Johnson said.
The speaker noted that the House later considered an Israel aid bill without the IRS offset. It was <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/israel" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rejected</a>, with 166 Democrats and 14 Republicans voting against it after President Joe Biden <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/biden-threatens-veto-us-houses-standalone-israel-aid-bill-2024-02-05/#:~:text=Feb%205%20(Reuters)%20%2D%20U.S.,providing%20new%20funds%20for%20border" target="_blank" rel="noopener">threatened</a> a veto.
On the Senate side, a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/senate-passes-95-billion-foreign-aid-bill-despite-opposition-from-over-half-of-republican-senators" target="_blank" rel="noopener">$95 billion foreign aid bill</a> to boost U.S. allies such as Israel and Ukraine was passed in February, but the House has not taken up the legislation. Some Democrats are renewing a push for that package following the Iran attack.

Johnson also rebuked Schumer over his <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mcconnell-rebukes-schumer-over-israel-remarks-grotesque-and-hypocritical" target="_blank" rel="noopener">call last month</a> for Israel to hold a new election while criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s leadership amid a months-long campaign in Gaza seeking to root out Hamas terrorists following an attack in October.
&#8220;What&#8217;s important right now is that we stand with Israel. We should not be dictating to them what their policy is; we certainly shouldn&#8217;t be doing what Chuck Schumer did, trying to suggest they should have new elections at this critical time,&#8221; Johnson said.

Numerous House Democrats have signaled that they would not certify a 2024 presidential election win from Donald Trump, relying on the 14th Amendment to claim Trump is an insurrectionist and thus ineligible from holding office.
Democrats including Reps. James Clyburn (SC), Jamie Raskin (MD), Adam Schiff (CA), Eric Swalwell (CA), and even House Minority Leader Hakeem Jefferies refused to <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/02/democrats-congress-trump-january-6/677545/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">say</a> that they would confirm Trump to office if he won the 2024 election.
As Dan McLaughlin <a href="https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/democrats-may-refuse-to-certify-a-trump-election-if-he-wins-the-supreme-court-could-prevent-that/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> at National Review, Democrats could have the votes to sustain an objection to a Trump win if they take control of the House. &#8220;Only a simple majority is required, and unlike when the House chooses a president under the Twelfth Amendment, they don’t vote by states,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Unlike in 2016 or 2004, when they were in the minority, House Democrats could be playing with live ammunition.&#8221;
Still, a majority of senators would have to object to a Trump win, too. This would likely take 51 senators, and as McLaughlin pointed out, this would be a tough task for Democrats: They &#8220;either have to hold every seat they currently occupy (good luck in West Virginia), or take a Republican-held seat (the bluest of which is either Ted Cruz’s in Texas or Rick Scott’s in Florida),&#8221; he said.
A potential way around some of this chaos rests at the Supreme Court, which heard oral arguments earlier this month in Trump v. Anderson, a case about whether or not a state, in this case Colorado, can keep Trump off the ballot based on the 14th Amendment. If the high court gives clarity on the issue of Trump eligibility, specifically that he is eligible, then Democrats would not have room to object on this basis.
The arguments, so far, have bode well for Trump. Nearly every single justice, including the liberal ones, seemed exceedingly uncomfortable with siding with Colorado based on Section 3 of the 14th Amendment. Notably, that provision was enacted immediately following the Civil War in an effort to keep anyone who engaged in an “insurrection” from holding office. 
Attorney Jonathan Mitchell, who argued on behalf of Trump, argued that Section 3 doesn’t mention “president,” but an “officer of the United States,” which he says includes appointed officials, not elected officials. Another argument centered around Colorado adding a qualification to Trump by deeming him an insurrectionist and then disqualifying him before the election.
Some of the strongest pushback to Colorado&#8217;s claims came from Justice Elena Kagan. “Why should a single state have the ability to make this determination not only for their own citizens but also for the nation?&#8221; she pressed the Colorado legal team. “It sounds awfully national to me … if you weren&#8217;t from Colorado, and you were from Wisconsin, or you were from Michigan, and what the Michigan secretary of state did is going to make the difference between whether candidate A is elected over Candidate  B is elected? I mean that seems quite extraordinary.”

Democrats will &#8220;evaluate&#8221; the legislation over the next few days, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) said on ABC&#8217;s &#8220;This Week,&#8221; which prompted ABC&#8217;s George Stephanopoulos to press him on whether that means he&#8217;s open to the bill.
