House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) earned an annoyed eye roll from CNBC anchor Becky Quick as they squared off over health care during a Friday morning appearance on &#8220;Squawk Box.&#8221;
Quick and Jeffries were discussing the apparent impasse between Republicans and Democrats over the Affordable Care Act — and how long an extension they might approve for the COVID-era subsidies — and Quick tried several times to point out that some Republicans were willing to work out a deal, but Democrats were still trying to make demands.

Quick began by pointing out that there was already at least one bipartisan measure — supported by Reps. Tom Suozzi (D-NY) and Don Bacon (R-NE) — that had been proposed, offering a two-year extension to the subsidies in question. That would double the extension that Democrats had pitched weeks earlier — one year — as a potential shutdown-ending deal.
&#8220;If you want to get done, you are going to need at least some Republicans to come over, why not start with a one-year extension or potentially even a two-year extension?” Quick asked, noting that a three-year extension was likely to be “dead in the water.&#8221;
Jeffries balked, noting that Democrats had already tried promising to end the shutdown in exchange for a one-year extension, but that Republicans had turned that down.

&#8220;That’s different. I’m talking about what you have now. Let’s not go back to what’s done in the past and what has not been extended. If you want to get something that it has actually done, you need to do something that will have bipartisan effect,&#8221; Quick pushed back.
&#8220;You can ask me the question. I’ll provide the answer,&#8221; Jeffries said.
&#8220;Answer the question instead of going back,&#8221; Quick pressed.
&#8220;I’m providing an answer in order to provide context,&#8221; Jeffries argued, prompting an annoyed eye roll from Quick. &#8220;Republicans have repeatedly refused to take yes for an answer. It was a very reasonable multi-year extension that was offered. It was one year straight extension, plus a multi-year process through a bipartisan commission to more permanently resolve the Affordable Care Act issue. So having that context is absolutely important, regardless of what you may think.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s important context to make me realize that I don’t think you want to get a deal done,&#8221; Quick replied. &#8220;I think this is something where you’d like to see the rates go higher and allow the Republicans to hang themselves with that. Is that the answer? Is this politics?&#8221;
Jeffries bristled: &#8220;That’s absolutely a ridiculous assertion, and really shame on you for saying that.&#8221;
&#8220;Three years is not going to get passed, so what do you do?&#8221; Quick asked again.
Jeffries repeatedly claimed that the issue was &#8220;patriotic&#8221; rather than &#8220;partisan,&#8221; but failed to acknowledge the fact that both the one-year extension offered by Senate Democrats and the three-year extension he appeared to be set on would guarantee that Republicans would have to address the same subsidy fight in an election year. The two year extension — to which he seemed adamantly opposed — was the only offer on the table that would put the next subsidy battle in an off year.

Topline: The government shutdown finally came to a close on Wednesday, with President Donald Trump signing legislation to reopen the government.
The House voted on legislation to fund the government through the end of January. The vote came after eight Senate Democrats sided with Republicans earlier this week to break the filibuster and push through a continuing resolution to fund the federal government.
After more than 40 days, the shutdown’s impacts hit all across the country. From air travel to food stamps, Americans felt it.
What comes next:  The debate will quickly shift to healthcare and Obamacare subsidies, which the Democrats used as a rhetorical tool to prevent funding the government for the past 40 days. When they voted to reopen the government over the weekend, part of the deal was to bring that debate back to the Senate in December.
On the House side, Democrats such as Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries have proposed extending those subsidies for three years. But with Republicans in the majority, the calculus is different, and there is a lot unknown about the continuation of those subsidies.
The argument from many Republicans and opponents of the renewed subsidies for the Affordable Care Act is that the program was never sustainable to begin with.
Shutdown drama continued:  Republicans are very pleased with the outcome, but many Democrats, aside from those few who voted to reopen the government, are not.

Topline: The DOJ is investigating a protest outside of a Turning Point USA event at UC Berkeley this week.
TPUSA has gotten more attention than ever over the last two months since Charlie Kirk, the group’s founder, was assassinated. In the wake of that tragedy, rather than pull back, the conservative activist group has gone all in.
While a number of its events have faced significant protest, thanks to increased security, most have been peaceful. But during the final stop of the Turning Point tour this week at Cal Berkeley, a protest turned violent. In the hours leading up to the event, hundreds of black-clad protesters <a href="https://x.com/MrAndyNgo/status/1988056273716474048?s=20">descended</a> on the venue, hurling insults and threats at conservative students attending the event, and mocking Kirk’s murder.
Other chants included, “When fascists come and cause a wreck, they get a bullet in the neck.” At one point, a group of protesters attempted to rob a man of his necklace and proceeded to beat him when he attempted to stop them. As the victim, who was briefly detained by police himself, stands up, dripping blood from his face, some in the crowd begin to taunt him, <a href="https://x.com/FrontlinesTPUSA/status/1988051012050186316?s=20" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying,</a> “white boy, you’re bleeding.”
Turning Point staffers say rioters set off smoke bombs and tear gas outside the venue, and hurled fireworks and glass bottles at those trying to get in, including parents carrying small children. And then, as the event ended, large groups of rioters blocked exits and hurled threats at those leaving. 
DOJ steps in: Attorney General Pam Bondi said Tuesday that the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force will &#8220;spare no expense unmasking all who commit and orchestrate acts of political violence” and seeking out the identities of specific agitators. Bondi <a href="https://x.com/AGPamBondi/status/1988339354754769099">added</a>, &#8220;Antifa is an existential threat to our nation.&#8221; The Justice Department also sent a letter to the University of California Board of Regents, notifying them that an investigation had been opened into their handling of the riot, ordering them to preserve all internal records regarding security preparations. 
“ There was a sold out crowd of over 2,000 tickets for this event with Rob Schneider, the comedian, and in fact, only a thousand people were allowed to enter,&#8221; <a href="https://x.com/AAGDhillon/status/1988582068776026127?s=20">said</a> the Justice Department’s assistant attorney general for civil rights, Harmeet Dhillon. &#8220;There were shenanigans with the ticketing, but a lot of people didn&#8217;t come because of what we call the ‘heckler&#8217;s veto,’ the violent mob allowed to fester outside.”

Topline: Venezuela says it’s launched a “massive mobilization” of its armed forces – as the United States’ largest aircraft carrier arrives in the region.
Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro’s defense minister, Vladimir Padrino López, on Tuesday <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/maduro-orders-massive-military-mobilization-as-u-s-carrier-group-nears-venezuela">announced</a> a military buildup to counter what he called the “imperialist threat” from the United States. That buildup included military exercises on Wednesday that reportedly <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/venezuela-military-mobilization-us-navy-flotilla-nears-caribbean-uss-ford/">involved</a> around 200,000 troops. Reports say that the military has prepped anti-aircraft systems across Venezuela in case Trump decides to order land strikes, as he has hinted at a few times.
State of play: The United States’ largest and most advanced warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, has finally arrived in the region, military officials said on Tuesday.
But diplomatic relations between Caracas and Washington have broken down, and it is unclear whether they have since rebounded.
The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/world/americas/maduro-venezuela-us-oil.html">reported</a> last month that diplomacy between the two sides is basically broken. It broke over Maduro’s refusal to vacate leadership.
Caracas had offered the United States a majority stake in its oil and other mineral wealth. Part of the agreement would have been that Caracas would distance itself from powers hostile to the United States – namely, China, Iran, and Russia. But the United States walked away.
Invasion?: Many have made comparisons between the military buildup in the Caribbean Sea and the lead-up to the U.S. invasion of Panama in 1989. There remain some stark differences, however. Venezuela is much larger than Panama, has a larger military, and Maduro is protected by special forces from Cuba, and Moscow has promised to help Venezuela in the event of an invasion.
Also, in 1989, the United States went into Panama to oust dictator Gen. Manuel Noriega with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/11/11/us/politics/panama-noriega-maduro.html">roughly</a> 27,000 troops. With the addition of the USS Gerald R. Ford, the United States still has only <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2025/11/11/americas/venezuela-military-mobilization-us-buildup-intl-latam#:~:text=Maduro%20has%20also%20claimed%20that,CNN's%20Haley%20Britzky%20contributed.">around</a> 15,000 troops in the Caribbean Sea.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) mocked and summarily dismissed Dr. Mehmet Oz, the cardio-thoracic surgeon-turned television personality who is currently serving in President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration as the 17th administrator of the Centers for Medicare &amp; Medicaid Services.
Jeffries, while taking questions from the press, responded to a mention of Oz with derisive laughter followed by insults, claiming that Oz was not to be &#8220;taken seriously&#8221; and was &#8220;woefully unqualified&#8221; to be posing questions about health care.

&#8220;Dr. Oz said that —&#8221; Fox Business national correspondent Darren Botelho began, but Jeffries interrupted.
&#8220;Who?&#8221; he asked, prompting laughter from around the room.
Botelho finished his question, asking about the millions of &#8220;phantom enrollees&#8221; — people who are technically enrolled in plans under the Affordable Care Act but who never use the benefits, either because they were fraudulently enrolled without their knowledge or because they have other coverage and therefore don&#8217;t need it. Jeffries took a drink of water and smiled while he waited for Botelho to stop talking.
&#8220;That’s like the most random way to start a question on a serious topic, nobody who&#8217;s serious in this country takes Dr. Oz seriously — no one,” Jeffries said, making no effort to address the &#8220;serious topic&#8221; as he continued to mock Dr. Oz. &#8220;I mean, it’s shocking that the guy was even confirmed. But this is part of the reality that Republicans here in the House and over in the Senate — they’re nothing more than a rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s cruelty and extreme agenda.&#8221;
&#8220;I have no idea what Dr. Oz is talking about and neither do the American people. I’m not going to respond to any comments from randos like Dr. Oz, who is woefully unqualified to be in whatever position he holds in the administration. He’s a joke, these people are a joke,&#8221; Jeffries continued, still not answering the question. &#8220;But the issue of the health care of the American people is very serious, and that’s what we’ll continue to focus on.&#8221;

CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins caught House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) in an outright lie about the ongoing government shutdown, pushing back immediately when he claimed that Republican leaders were not engaging on the issues that might finally get the government reopened.

Two people &#8220;with knowledge of the situation&#8221; told <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2025/10/24/after-a-lengthy-wait-jeffries-to-endorse-mamdani-00621799?experience_id=EXYF89KVT5UQ&amp;template_id=OTJIR2CRKUD6&amp;variant_id=OTV7T8G93R30L&amp;is_login_link=true">POLITICO</a> that Jeffries is ready to publicly back Mamdani after the House minority leader faced pressure from leftists for months. The endorsement is expected to come just one day before early voting begins in the NYC mayoral race, as Mamdani maintains a significant polling advantage over former Democratic Governor Andrew Cuomo, who&#8217;s running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.
Jeffries told reporters in Washington, D.C., on Friday to &#8220;stay tuned.&#8221;
&#8220;I have not refused to endorse. I have refused to articulate my position, and I will momentarily, at some point, in advance of early voting,&#8221; he added.

Assuming Jeffries endorses Mamdani on Friday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) will become the only key New York Democratic leader who has not yet endorsed the socialist candidate.
Mamdani, who has called for rent freezing, price controls, and city-owned grocery stores, leads Cuomo by double digits, according to the most recent <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/polls/nyc-mayoral-election-polls-2025.html">polls</a>. Some Republicans have called on GOP candidate Curtis Sliwa to drop out of the race to potentially give Cuomo an extra boost. Sliwa, who stands a 16% in the RealClearPolitics average of polling, said that he will stay in the race, arguing that the effort to push him out is promoted by billionaires, such as hedge fund CEO Bill Ackman.
&#8220;The billionaires can conspire to pick their candidate,&#8221; Sliwa <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/curtis-sliwa-vows-zohran-mamdanis-worst-nightmare-democratic-socialist-wins-nyc-mayoral-race">said</a> earlier this week. &#8220;I trust the people. They will make the decision. I will not drop out.&#8221;
President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that even if Sliwa were to drop out, Cuomo would &#8220;have a little bit of a chance, but not much.&#8221; Trump called Mamdani a &#8220;communist,&#8221; but he added that he would be willing to talk to Mamdani if he were to become mayor.

Democrats began the shutdown with complaints about young mothers and their children who would soon go hungry because their benefits through the Women, Infants, and Children (W.I.C.) program would run out due to the shutdown — but the Trump administration was able to find untapped funds to bridge that gap.

A man pardoned by President Donald Trump after taking part in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot was arrested over the weekend for allegedly threatening to kill House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).
Christopher Moynihan, 34, was taken into custody on Sunday after he wrote in a text message that he was planning to &#8220;eliminate&#8221; Jeffries at an event in New York City on Monday, according to court documents, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/pardoned-capitol-rioter-charged-threatening-hakeem-jeffries-nyc-trump/">reported</a>. Jeffries, who represents New York&#8217;s 8th Congressional District, spoke at the Economic Club of New York on Monday.
Moynihan, who lives in Clinton, New York, is accused of writing in a text message, &#8220;Hakeem Jeffries makes a speech in a few days in NYC I cannot allow this terrorist to live.&#8221;
&#8220;Even if I am hated, he must be eliminated, I will kill him for the future,&#8221; Moynihan allegedly added.
New York State Police <a href="https://troopers.ny.gov/news/clinton-man-arrested-making-terroristic-threats-toward-member-congress">arrested</a> Moynihan after an FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force investigation, The New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/10/21/us-news/pardoned-capitol-rioter-arrested-for-allegedly-threatening-to-murder-hakeem-jeffries/">reported</a>. He is charged with making a terroristic threat, a felony. Moynihan is set to make his first court appearance on Thursday in Dutchess County, New York. He will remain in jail &#8220;in lieu of $10,000 cash bail, a $30,000 bond, or an $80,000 partially secured bond,&#8221; according to the New York State Police.
Jeffries is in the midst of a fierce battle with Republicans over the government shutdown. Last week, Jeffries <a href="https://democraticleader.house.gov/media/press-releases/leader-jeffries-msnbc-protests-are-going-take-place-today-peaceful-expression">criticized</a> White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt after she said that the Democratic Party is catering to &#8220;Hamas terrorists, illegal aliens, and violent criminals.&#8221; Jeffries responded to Leavitt&#8217;s comments, calling her &#8220;sick&#8221; and &#8220;out of control.&#8221; He then argued that the Trump administration was unleashing &#8220;unprecedented extremism on the American people.&#8221;

Moynihan was one of the more than 1,500 Capitol riot defendants who received a blanket pardon from President Trump shortly after Trump was sworn into office in January. The New York man was seen in photos walking on the Senate floor on January 6, 2021, after rioters breached the Capitol. Prosecutors alleged that while on the Senate floor, &#8220;Moynihan rifled through a notebook on top of a Senator&#8217;s desk, saying &#8216;There&#8217;s gotta be something in here we can f***ing use against these scumbags.'&#8221; He pleaded guilty to five misdemeanor charges and was sentenced to 21 months in prison in February 2023.
Since Trump pardoned hundreds of J6 defendants, Democrats have condemned the move by pointing to a few instances where people were charged with other alleged crimes in the weeks following their pardons. Earlier this year, a 42-year-old Indiana man who Trump pardoned was shot and <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/man-who-received-j6-pardon-shot-and-killed-during-traffic-stop">killed</a> during a traffic stop after he allegedly resisted arrest and raised &#8220;a firearm at police.&#8221; Another man who was convicted for his role in the Capitol riot was arrested weeks after his pardon for allegedly breaking into a home in Virginia.

&#8220;It&#8217;s not how it works! It&#8217;s bad, it&#8217;s bad precedent!&#8221; Kernen continued, noting that the Continuing Resolution — which would at least temporarily reopen the government — had already passed the House, but needed a handful of Senate votes.
Jeffries attempted to pivot, saying, &#8220;What is bad precedent is the Republican refusal to engage in bipartisan negotiations! &#8230; They&#8217;ve made the decision to shut the government down, they could open it now!&#8221;
&#8220;How could they do that?!&#8221; Kernen asked.
&#8220;I just explained it! The reality is they want to keep the government closed. Cruelty, from the very beginning of this administration, has been the point. The responsible thing to do is to sit down and negotiate a bipartisan path forward to address a very real health care crisis that&#8217;s upon us right now!&#8221; Jeffries said, visibly frustrated. He left out the fact that the only negotiations Democrats have said they&#8217;d agree to would necessarily include — as Kernen said — the undoing of provisions that Republicans passed as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill.

The Trump administration is freezing $2.1 billion in funding for Chicago infrastructure projects over accusations of “race-based contracting” as the government shutdown continues. 
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought announced the move Friday morning, saying that the freeze would impact construction to modernize the city’s public transit system. It comes just two days after the Department of Transportation <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-freezes-18-billion-for-nyc-infrastructure-over-unconstitutional-dei-principles?author=Zach+Jewell&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=2&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Freezes+%2418+Billion+For+NYC+Infrastructure+Over+%E2%80%98Unconstitutional+DEI+Principles%E2%80%99">froze</a> $18 billion for New York City infrastructure projects over “unconstitutional” diversity, equity, and inclusion “principles.”
“$2.1 billion in Chicago infrastructure projects — specifically the Red Line Extension and the Red and Purple Modernization Project — have been put on hold to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting,” Vought wrote on X. 
Shortly after Vought’s announcement, the Department of Transportation <a href="https://www.transportation.gov/briefing-room/us-department-transportation-statement-review-chicagos-discriminatory">confirmed</a> the freeze and suggested that Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) were to blame for leading the Democrats’ resistance to a temporary government funding bill. 
The department said that it was “committed to conducting these reviews as fast as possible so reimbursements can move forward. Unfortunately, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries’ decision to shut down the government has negatively affected the Department’s staffing resources for carrying out this important analysis.”
“We urge Democrats in Congress to stop holding the federal government’s budget hostage so USDOT can get back to the important work of the American people,” the department added.

It sent letters on Friday to the Chicago Transit Authority, stating that it had initiated an administrative review of two ongoing projects to modernize the city’s rail system, and added that it was concerned about preferential treatment in construction contracting based on race. 
“Together, these critical reviews are intended to ensure no additional federal dollars go towards discriminatory, illegal, and wasteful contracting practices,” the department said. “The American people don’t care what race or gender construction workers, pipefitters, or electricians are. They just want these massive projects finally built quickly and efficiently.”

And it&#8217;s not a new position, either. Several people posted videos and still photos from one of the 2020 Democratic primary debates, when every Democrat on the stage raised a hand to confirm that all of their healthcare plans would include coverage for &#8220;undocumented immigrants.&#8221;

CNN anchors John Berman and Kaitlan Collins appeared to have trouble wrapping their brains around the Trump administration&#8217;s willingness to defend — and even embrace — a meme they described as &#8220;racist&#8221; without any apparent concern about the repercussions for doing so.
Berman raised the topic during a Wednesday conversation with Collins, noting that the meme in question — an AI-doctored video that featured House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) with a fake mustache and a sombrero — had been on full display at the White House briefing room.

&#8220;So we played sound from Vice President Vance not just defending that AI racist video of Minority Leader Jeffries wearing a sombrero, but also, like celebrating that video, and it was playing on a loop in the briefing room today,&#8221; Berman said, turning to Collins: &#8220;What are you hearing from the inside about that?&#8221;
Collins set the scene for Berman, saying that in addition to the video being played on a loop, the mariachi music from the video had been piped through the room&#8217;s sound system so that everyone could hear it.
&#8220;It just kind of gives you a window, John, into how they&#8217;re dealing with this,&#8221; Collins continued. &#8220;And how they believe they have the upper hand when it comes to the messaging here and also kind of how things have changed from the first time Donald Trump was in office.&#8221;

&#8220;I mean, there was a shutdown then, I remember all 35 days of it, as the president said at the beginning he&#8217;d be &#8216;proud to shut the government down,&#8217; and that it ended with him obviously not getting the money for his border wall,&#8221; she added. &#8220;This time, you know, there&#8217;s a moment here, they&#8217;re being heavily criticized over this — over these posts by the president — by Democrats, and instead of backing off or apologizing for it, they&#8217;re leaning into it. They&#8217;re playing the music over loudspeakers and on repeat inside the briefing room because they simply don&#8217;t care about that criticism.&#8221;
Vice President JD Vance, when asked about the memes, gave his word that the sombrero memes would stop if and when Jeffries helped put an end to the government shutdown, which was triggered on Tuesday when Democrats refused to vote for a stopgap funding measure unless they got certain concessions.
