Less than 24 hours after a failed assassination attempt against former President Donald Trump — which left one bystander dead and three others, including Trump, injured — The Atlantic&#8217;s David Frum blamed the violence on the former president and his supporters.
&#8220;The Gunman and the Would-Be Dictator,&#8221; blared the headline, and on the off-chance anyone missed the intended tone of the piece, a subhead followed: &#8220;Violence stalks the president who has rejoiced in violence to others.&#8221;
Frum&#8217;s premise was that Trump was a fascist and because &#8220;fascism feasts on violence,&#8221; the former president was simply getting a taste of that which he had fostered.
Addressing the attack on Trump, which took place on Saturday at a Pennsylvania rally, as &#8220;a horror and an outrage,&#8221; Frum went on to invoke history to quickly forget the name of the man who would commit such a despicable act. But first he blamed the victim, writing,&#8221;Now the bloodshed that Trump has done so much to incite against others has touched him as well.&#8221;
&#8220;Trump and his supporters envision a new place for violence as their defining political message in the 2024 election,&#8221; the political commentator continued, returning to his original premise. &#8220;Fascist movements are secular religions. Like all religions, they offer martyrs as their proof of truth. The Mussolini movement in Italy built imposing monuments to its fallen comrades. The Trump movement now improves on that: The leader himself will be the martyr in chief, his own blood the basis for his bid for power and vengeance.&#8221;
Frum ventured further in the same vein, ultimately concluding that &#8220;the gunman and Trump, at their opposite ends of a bullet’s trajectory, are nonetheless joined together as common enemies of law and democracy.&#8221;
Critics were not impressed with Frum&#8217;s take — and even less impressed with his timing — as they responded via X.

&#8220;Fox &amp; Friends&#8221; host Brian Kilmeade opened the segment with a mention of Trump&#8217;s upcoming rally in the Bronx, cutting to a video of Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) reacting to it. She claimed that Trump was using the rally to &#8220;fleece&#8221; people out of their money so that he could pay his legal bills and was only doing it in the South Bronx because he had to be in court in Manhattan anyway for his hush-money trial.
&#8220;He can&#8217;t leave the Five Boroughs because he always has to be in court,&#8221; she claimed. &#8220;And so it is truly an embarrassment to him and I am looking forward to the response of everyday Bronxites talking about how they feel about him coming to their backyard.&#8221;
Lawrence Jones jumped in right after the clip ended, asking whether Ocasio-Crotez was the one who had <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/watch-ocasio-cortez-doubles-down-sabotaging-amazon-hank-berrien" target="_blank" rel="noopener">run Amazon out of her district</a> several years earlier.

Two Mondays ago, my niece was shot on the street that I grew up on. My niece was shot on the street that I grew up on! She doesn’t even hang out there; she doesn’t live there on the block anymore, but a good friend of mine who I’ve known for 45 years, her son passed away, and they were having a memorial for him, and so these guys — the gang violence is on the rise so much, it’s so underreported — so they come around with their masks, they’re shooting crazy, one third floor apartment was all busted up.&#8221;
Payne concluded with an update, saying that after a four-hour surgery and two weeks in the hospital, his niece had finally been released to go home a day earlier.

The incident occurred during a Mass celebrating a group of children’s first holy communion at St. Mary Magdalen church in Abbeville in southern Louisiana.

&#8220;This morning, our First Communion ceremony was interrupted when a suspicious person opened the back door,&#8221; St. Mary Magdalen church said in a statement, KGET <a href="https://www.kget.com/national-news/video-parishioners-stop-teen-with-gun-from-entering-louisiana-church/">reported</a>. &#8220;The individual was immediately confronted by parishioners, escorted outside and the police were called.&#8221;
Officers with the Abbeville Police Department apprehended and arrested the teen and then checked inside the church to make sure there was no additional danger.
&#8220;This understandably caused panic. While we realize this was a frightening experience for those in attendance, we are incredibly grateful to both parishioners and police officers for acting quickly to ensure the safety of all,&#8221; the church said.
Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, are involved in the investigation.
The suspect was questioned at a police station with a parent present and then taken to a hospital behavioral unit to be medically evaluated, the Abbeville Police Department said.
The teen has been charged with “terrorizing” as well as with two counts of possession of a firearm by a juvenile, police said.
The terrifying incident was captured on a church camera that was streaming the Mass online. A man ascends the altar and whispers to the priest, who then asks the parishioners to sit down and join him in prayer and begins reciting Hail Marys. Several men walk around near the front pews, frequently looking towards the back of the church.
Moments later, parishioners can be seen panicking, screaming, and grabbing their small children as police enter the church. The priest continued to pray but was drowned out by the crowd. He and several priests duck behind the altar during the chaos, and altar boys can be seen running across the altar.
&#8220;So guys, just get ahold of your child. Go slowly. We did apprehend a young man. He is in custody. He is in the police&#8217;s custody. Calm down and just get next to your child and go slowly,&#8221; a man can be heard telling the crowd on a microphone.
The church said it will have law enforcement at all upcoming Masses as a precaution.
St. Mary Magdelen church is part of Vermilion Parish and is located about 21 miles southwest of Lafayette.

Police said on Sunday that they believe a man with multiple assault convictions is responsible for a shooting that took place at a restaurant on Easter Sunday in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/nashville" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Nashville</a> that left one person dead and multiple wounded. 
Metro Nashville Police identified 46-year-old Anton Rucker as the suspect for a shooting at the Roasted Salemtown restaurant that killed 33-year-old Allen Beachem and injured seven others. According to police spokesman Don Aaron, the shooting took place after Rucker got into an argument with another man. 
“We don&#8217;t have any indication that they knew each other at this point,” Aaron said of the two in the argument. “It could be something as simple as one person invading another person&#8217;s space.”

A pregnant woman was also taken to the hospital as she had a panic attack and a man was treated for a graze wound.

A Maryland high school saw at least ten fights break out in just one day this week, and two days later a student was caught with a loaded handgun.
The string of fights happened Tuesday and the gun incident occurred Thursday at Charles Herbert Flowers High School near Washington, D.C., prompting an investigation by school administrators.
On Thursday, a student was found in possession of a loaded handgun, the school said in a <a href="https://twitter.com/RamirezReports/status/1737878379871797616" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to parents. The student was let in through a side door by another student and quickly confronted and searched by school security, the letter said.
No students or staff were harmed or actively threatened in the handgun incident, the school said.
Police <a href="https://www.wbal.com/prince-georges-police-arrest-charles-herbert-flowers-high-school-student-after-bringing-a-gun-to-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> an 18-year-old male suspect in connection with the gun incident. He faces several charges, including having a loaded handgun on his person.

One large brawl in a school hallway was captured on video and posted to social media. Dozens of students can be seen watching the fight. Another scuffle outside was also caught on video.
The school sent a letter to parents about the fights on Wednesday, informing them about a &#8220;concerning series of multiple altercations.&#8221;

Students allegedly opened doors to the building, allowing students from other schools to join the fights, some of which were prompted over small things like one student stepping on another&#8217;s shoes, <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to some parents. Another factor was tension between groups of students from different neighborhoods, one parent said.
&#8220;They&#8217;re fighting outside in the parking lot where the school buses are,&#8221; one concerned parent <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> Fox 5. &#8220;Like, where&#8217;s leadership? Where&#8217;s security?&#8221;
It is not yet clear whether any students were injured in the fights.
Some parents <a href="https://www.fox5dc.com/news/10-fights-break-out-at-prince-georges-county-high-school-maryland" target="_blank" rel="noopener">blamed</a> the fights on the absence of the school&#8217;s principal, Dr. Gorman Brown, who was placed on administrative leave in October for undisclosed reasons.
Brown was <a href="https://wjla.com/news/local/charles-herbert-flowers-high-school-prince-georges-county-maryland-principal-gorman-brown-reinstated-2-months-after-sudden-suspension-october-principals-union-administrative-leave-students-parents-education" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reinstated</a> on Wednesday and will likely return after Christmas break, according to the executive director of the Prince George’s County principals union.

Biden is set to make the announcement on Friday, according to <a href="https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2023/09/19/biden-creates-gun-violence-prevention-office/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Washington Post</a>. The president plans to leverage the new office, which will employ gun control activists in key roles, against Congress to push legislation on restricting firearms.
White House staff secretary Stefanie Feldman, a longtime Biden aide who has specialized in gun control research and legislation, will oversee the office’s work and be its liaison to the White House, the report said. Two senior members of gun control groups – the Community Justice Action Fund’s executive director, Greg Jackson, and Everytown for Gun Safety’s senior director for federal government affairs, Rob Wilcox – are expected to hold positions in the office, according to the Post.
Gun control groups are championing the report ahead of the office’s expected reveal in the White House Rose Garden on Friday afternoon.
“A White House office of gun violence prevention would build on the already tremendous record of President Biden and Vice President Harris on gun safety,” Peter Ambler, the executive director of a gun control group called Giffords, told <a href="https://www.politico.com/news/2023/09/19/biden-office-gun-violence-prevention-00116966" target="_blank" rel="noopener">POLITICO</a>. “This has been a top priority of ours for years, and it would provide an important center of gravity for leadership across the administration as the President and Vice President implement the historic Bipartisan Safer Communities Act and continue to push Congress to pass legislation to save lives. The hiring of Greg and Rob would show how seriously this administration takes its responsibility to address this crisis.”
Biden’s push for gun restrictions, such as a crackdown on “assault weapons” and high-capacity magazines, has so far failed to gain enough traction to pass through Congress. The issue was a prominent agenda item in his presidential campaign at a time when he aligned himself with former U.S. representative and failed Democratic presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke.

Biden has also called for reforms that would mandate background checks across all gun purchases and strip immunity from gun manufacturers that “knowingly put weapons of war on our streets.” In February, he <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/statements-releases/2023/02/14/statement-from-president-joe-biden-on-five-years-since-parkland/#:~:text=I%20once%20again%20call%20on,of%20war%20on%20our%20streets." target="_blank" rel="noopener">pitched</a> the proposals as “commonsense gun law reforms.”
Despite his failure to move the reforms through Congress, the president’s administration has taken steps to crack down on gun sellers by reinterpreting federal statutes governing Federal Firearms Licenses.
Critics have panned the Biden administration’s stance toward gun sellers.

Dozens of people were shot in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">cities</a> across the country over a violent Labor Day holiday this past weekend.
Gun violence broke out in at least seven cities over the three-day weekend, when much of the country was off from work and celebrating either at home or after traveling.
Chicago saw the most gun violence with <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/labor-day-weekend-shootings-sept-1-to-5/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">at least</a> 41 people shot, eight fatally.
A six-year-old boy <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/shootings-in-chicago-last-night-this-weekend-gun-violence/13737986/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">was shot</a> in his thigh and injured inside a home, and a teen boy was shot in the head and injured Sunday evening on the city&#8217;s South Side. No arrests have been made yet in either shooting, and detectives are investigating.
Late Friday, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the abdomen, and a 16-year-old girl was shot in the foot after a football game near a Chicago high school. The boy was reported in critical condition, and no one was immediately arrested.
A 53-year-old woman was found shot dead inside a Chicago home Saturday morning, and detectives were questioning a person of interest.
In Atlanta, 15 people <a href="https://www.11alive.com/article/news/crime/atlantas-violent-labor-day-weekend-police-still-say-crime-is-down-victims-families-disagree-shootings-fatal-deadly/85-64059c66-fc61-4fef-a239-748ed97e2944" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were shot</a> and six people died from their wounds over the weekend.

In Kansas City, four people were <a href="https://www.kmbc.com/article/four-people-shot-killed-labor-day-weekend-kc/44991108" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shot</a> and killed over the weekend, and all cases reportedly remain unsolved.
In Baltimore, police are investigating seven shootings that <a href="https://foxbaltimore.com/news/local/one-man-killed-two-injured-in-three-separate-overnight-shootings-in-baltimore-police-say#" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> at least two people. On Friday night, a 12-year-old was <a href="https://foxbaltimore.com/news/local/baltimore-grapples-with-violent-labor-day-weekend-seven-shootings-under-investigation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shot</a> and injured near a Baltimore high school by a gunman who is still on the run from police.
In New York City, at least three people <a href="https://nypost.com/2023/09/04/5-people-busted-for-guns-at-jouvert-but-no-shootings-or-stabbings-reported-nypd-sources/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were shot</a> near a parade route in Brooklyn on Monday, including a 51-year-old man who died from his injuries.
In Philadelphia, at least two people, one elderly and one a minor, were shot over the holiday weekend. An 80-year-old was in critical condition after being <a href="https://www.fox29.com/news/man-80-shot-in-the-head-on-labor-day-in-south-philadelphia-police" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shot</a> in South Philadelphia on Monday. No one has been arrested yet. A 15-year-old boy was shot and <a href="https://6abc.com/15-year-old-philadelphia-police-shooting-teen-injured/13736803/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">injured</a> Monday night in Philadelphia.
In Memphis, four people including a 17-year-old were in critical condition after three <a href="https://wreg.com/news/local/labor-day-weekend-shootings-leave-4-injured/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shootings</a> over the holiday weekend.
Summer holidays including Labor Day, the Fourth of July, and Memorial Day typically come with a spate of violence, particularly gun violence, across the country, especially in major cities.
Last year, the violence in some areas was even worse.
Last year in Chicago, 55 people <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-shooting-labor-day-weekend-shootings-violence-crime/12203033/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were injured</a> and 11 people died from gun violence over the Labor Day holiday.
In Philadelphia in 2022, 10 people were <a href="https://6abc.com/philadelphia-shooting-gun-violence-labor-day-weekend-philly-murders/12201849/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">killed</a> over Labor Day weekend and 23 more people were injured.
In several <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/US/shootings-new-york-city-25-year-nypd/story?id=100793613" target="_blank" rel="noopener">major</a> cities, gun violence has <a href="https://xtown.la/2023/07/07/los-angeles-sees-major-drop-in-murdersin-first-half-of-2023/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dipped</a> this year since just after the pandemic in 2021, when shooting murders <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2023/04/26/what-the-data-says-about-gun-deaths-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">spiked</a> 45% compared to 2019.
However, violent crime across the U.S. <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/violent-crime-us-cities-still-pre-pandemic-levels-report-says-rcna95176" target="_blank" rel="noopener">remains</a> elevated above pre-pandemic levels.
Gun assaults were up 39%, aggravated assaults were up 8%, and robberies were up 2% in the first half of this year compared to the first half of 2019, <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/violent-crime-us-cities-still-pre-pandemic-levels-report-says-rcna95176" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to a report from the Council on Criminal Justice.
Some cities are also now <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/another-california-smash-and-grab-sees-thieves-make-off-with-half-a-million-dollars-in-jewelry">struggling</a> with other crime trends such as car theft, robbery, and organized shoplifting.

The city of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a> was rocked by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gun-violence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">violence</a> over the holiday weekend as more than 40 people were wounded and 11 killed, the most deadly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/memorial-day" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Memorial Day</a> weekend in eight years. 
According <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2023/5/27/23739457/memorial-day-weekend-chicago-shootings-violence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to a tally</a> from the Chicago Sun-Times, at least 45 people were injured in shootings or stabbings, while another 11 were killed. Two of the violent incidents happened not far from the home of new Democratic Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/brandon-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brandon Johnson</a>. 
A woman was found dead from stab wounds two blocks from the mayor’s home, while another individual was injured in a shooting in his West Side neighborhood, according to the Sun-Times. It was the most people killed since 2015, though not the most injured. 
Multiple police officers worked on their days off due to the expected increase in violence over the weekend. 
Homicide victims included a 33-year-old unidentified man who was shot in the armpit, 35-year-old William Hair who was shot in the chest, 22-year-old Johnathan Salgado, a 35-year-old man who was shot in the face while standing on a sidewalk, an unidentified woman killed in a drive-by shooting, a 26-year-old shot in the back, and a 35-year-old man shot in the head while in his car. 
The incidents took place throughout the city, including the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, the Little Village neighborhood, the Austin neighborhood, the Lake View neighborhood, West Garfield Park, and Woodlawn. 
Two non-fatal shooting incidents involved separate 2-year-olds. One involved a young girl accidentally injuring herself with a gun she found in the street, while the other involved a boy who was shot in the hand while playing in a bedroom.

Chicago was not the only place that experienced excessive violence over the holiday weekend. Nine people <a href="https://apnews.com/article/hollywood-florida-beach-shooting-93dda56246a69d8913f35349c52d83c5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were injured</a> during a shooting at a beach in Hollywood, Florida. Students in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/flint" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Flint, Michigan</a>, school district will not be allowed to carry backpacks to school for the rest of the year.
The Flint Board of Education voted unanimously last week to ban students from carrying backpacks. The decision came after two separate safety incidents occurred at Southwestern Classical Academy in Flint, both of which prompted officials to close schools in the area. The policy went into effect on Monday.
&#8220;School safety remains an important topic for districts across the country, including here in Flint,&#8221; Superintendent Kevelin Jones wrote in a <a href="https://www.flintschools.org/apps/news/article/1757528" target="_blank" rel="noopener">letter</a> to parents Thursday. &#8220;As a district, we are taking a 360-degree approach to create safe spaces for children’s academic journeys. To that end, we have reached a point where we must make difficult decisions and ask our school community to demonstrate flexibility, understanding and a shared sense of urgency when it comes to safety.&#8221;
As of Monday, students are <a href="https://www.flintschools.org/apps/news/article/1757540" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not allowed</a> to carry backpacks into school buildings. Small purses carrying personal items, clear plastic bags with gym clothes, and lunchboxes are allowed within reason, the letter noted, but those bags will still be subject to search. If a student brings a backpack to school, the office will not keep the student&#8217;s belongings. Instead, he or she will be sent to the school office and a parent or guardian will pick up the student&#8217;s belongings. Athletes will also have to drop off their equipment at the front office every day.
&#8220;Across the country, we have seen an increase in threatening behavior and contraband, including weapons, being brought into schools at all levels,&#8221; Jones wrote. &#8220;Backpacks make it easier for students to hide weapons, which can be disassembled and harder to identify or hidden in pockets, inside books or under other items. Clear backpacks do not completely fix this issue. By banning backpacks altogether and adding an increased security presence across the district, we can better control what is being brought into our buildings.&#8221;
According to <a href="https://www.mlive.com/news/flint/2023/04/backpacks-banned-at-flint-schools-for-rest-of-academic-year-due-to-safety-concerns.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">MLive</a>, the board had suggested the same proposal earlier this year, but it was voted down. At that time, Jones suggested allowing only clear backpacks, but that was also rejected. It is not the first time that Flint district has banned backpacks; they previously did it in 2007.
&#8220;This is a difficult decision, but it is one that will immediately benefit our district and the safety of those we serve,&#8221; Jones wrote. &#8220;This has been approved by the Flint Board of Education, the district’s administration and principals, with support from the Flint Police Department and other safety advocates. We have thought long and hard about this decision, knowing that it will impact how scholars and families prepare for their days and operations in the classroom. However, based on the issues we continue to see across the country regarding school safety, we believe that this is the best solution for those we serve.&#8221;

The decision was motivated in part by two separate incidents that prompted schools to close; both incidents happened at Southwestern Classical Academy. First, in <a href="https://www.fox23.com/news/trending/student-17-arrested-after-threat-to-shoot-flint-school-like-oxford/article_a5a45ab2-4a4d-5d8d-a7b1-3ff753e900c8.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">December 2021</a>, a student at the school was riding a school bus when she recorded a &#8220;rap-style&#8221; video threatening to commit a school shooting &#8220;like Oxford,&#8221; a reference to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breaking-several-injured-in-school-shooting-near-detroit-suspect-in-custody" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2021 school shooting</a> in nearby Oakland County. The school closed in response.

Baltimore residents under 17 face a citywide curfew this summer after two teenagers were injured Sunday night in a shooting amid a crowd of over 200 minors gathered around the incident.
According to local media, a large presence of police broke up a fight at the Inner Harbor around 9:00 p.m. last night, leaving a 14-year-old and 16-year-old injured from gunshot wounds. Authorities said two were arrested, including one police found with a loaded gun in the police headquarters parking garage after attempting to escape the scene on a dirt bike, and another believed to have been involved in the shooting.
Following the report, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott called for a 9:00 p.m. curfew for minors under 14 years old and a 10 p.m. curfew for anyone younger than 17.
&#8220;I want everyone to hear me, and hear me clearly,&#8221; Scott said, according to <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/baltimore-fraternal-order-of-police-criticizes-city-leaders-response-to-violence/">CBS</a>. &#8220;We are going back to the old days. We will be enforcing a youth curfew as we move into the latter spring and summer months.&#8221;
Scott said the city would host summer camps and programs, which have yet to be announced.
&#8220;We are going to have summer camp,&#8221; Mayor Scott <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/baltimore/news/baltiimore-mayor-says-citywide-curfew-minors-memorial-day-weekend/">said</a>. &#8220;We are going to do the great things we do in recreation and parks, but we are also going to put a sense of accountability on families. We want our young kids to come out to the Inner Harbor and enjoy it in a safe way.&#8221;
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison addressed the incident in a press conference following the shooting, stating more than 40 officers responded to the scene.
&#8220;This speaks to a larger issue, that young people have easy access to these firearms and would use them indiscriminately, shooting people within 30 feet with 25 to 30 police officers who were in the area,&#8221; Harrison said. &#8220;They don&#8217;t care about the consequences and have no respect for human life or authority to pull off that brazenly cowardly act in front of police officers.&#8221;
Some residents described a disturbing atmosphere around the Inner Harbor area to <a href="https://www.wbal.com/article/608502/2/2-teenagers-injured-in-shooting-at-inner-harbor-after-large-gathering">local media</a>.
&#8220;You want to be able to come out any time and be safe. So, that makes me feel like we have to come in before dark,&#8221; Tammy Williams, a resident, said.
Another resident said she had to leave the area while visiting with her daughter, who said the youth flooded the streets with dirt bikes.
&#8220;I was telling her, &#8216;Where are their parents?&#8217; And, if something happens, then their parents are going to be the ones saying, &#8216;Oh, this is terrible.&#8217; But you know, the time is now,&#8221; Velvette Clayton said.
Baltimore police reported at least five children had been fatally shot in 2023, with 23 residents under 18 years old having sustained gunfire injuries.

Days after the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nashville-mourns-covenant-school-shooting-victims-at-citywide-vigil" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deadly mass shooting</a> at a private Christian grade school in Nashville, Tennessee&#8217;s two U.S. senators announced they will introduce legislation to fund ways to better protect public and private schools around the country.
At the heart of the bill, which will be called the The Securing Aid for Every (SAFE) School Act, is a $900 million grant program, according to Sens. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Bill Hagerty (R-TN).
<a href="https://www.blackburn.senate.gov/services/files/C9909869-9DCC-4DD8-BB2B-D55AD18CD113" target="_blank" rel="noopener">A fact sheet</a> for Blackburn and Hagerty&#8217;s bill says states will be able use the grant money in a number of ways, including to train and hire veterans and former law enforcement officers to serve as school safety officers, hire off duty law enforcement officers, and provide funding to harden schools and increase physical security.
The legislation offers an alternative to the gun control measures being pushed by Democrats, including <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/biden-calls-for-republicans-to-face-pressure-claims-he-supports-2a-in-renewed-gun-control-push" target="_blank" rel="noopener">President Joe Biden</a>, following the shooting at The Covenant School that resulted in the deaths of three children and three faculty members. The shooter, a woman who identified as transgender, was killed by law enforcement.
“I am beyond heartbroken at the shooting that occurred at the Covenant School in Nashville,” Blackburn said in a statement. “No parent should have to endure what these families are experiencing. Schools should be places where children are safe to learn, play, and be children.&#8221;
&#8220;By providing these critical funds, we can help protect our precious children and secure our schools,&#8221; she added.
Blackburn, who has pushed similar legislation in the past, and Hagerty said they have the support of Tennessee leaders, school safety advocates, and veterans, along with local, state and federal law enforcement officials and organizations. Among them is Republican Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, who said he commends Blackburn and Hagerty &#8220;for proposing legislation to secure public and private schools across the nation.&#8221;
Their fact sheet noted that Tennessee already has a training program for school resource officers but stressed the SAFE School would not disrupt that program. Rather, it would &#8220;provide supplemental resources in addition to the resources provided by other programs, like Tennessee’s Safe Schools Act,&#8221; the document notes.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. —  More than 300 people mourned the loss of three children and three adults Wednesday at a citywide candlelight vigil in the heart of Nashville.
The vigil was held to honor the victims of the Covenant School mass shooting — who were killed earlier this week by a trans-identifying former student — and hundreds of locals and visitors joined together to pay their respects. First Lady Jill Biden was also in attendance at the vigil, which took place at One Public Square Park.  
Among the others in attendance were speakers Nashville Mayor John Cooper, Metro Council member Russ Pulley, State Rep. Rev. Harold Love Jr., Metro Nashville police Chief John Drake, Nashville fire chief William Swann, and Rev. Clay Stauffer of Woodmont Christian Church. A number of other clergy members and other state and local officials also attended.
&#8220;Many of us have hoped and prayed that these evil acts that we saw would never happen in Nashville,&#8221; Drake said. &#8220;We are grateful to the team of officers who rushed into the school building without hesitation Monday morning to locate and stop the threat before any more innocent victims were harmed.&#8221;
&#8220;Our police officers have cried, and are crying with Nashville, and the world. I have cried and continued to cry, and I have prayed for Nashville as well, &#8221; he added.
The shooter, whom the Daily Wire will not name per company policy, was a white 28-year-old Nashville woman who recently identified as a man. She was stopped by Nashville police officers Rex Englebert and Michael Collazo who respectively fired three and four shots at her.
According to the Metro Nashville Police Department, the victims are Evelyn Dieckhaus, Hallie Scruggs, and William Kinney, all age 9, substitute teacher Cynthia Peak, 61, Covenant School head Katherine Koonce, 60, and custodian Mike Hill, 61.
&#8220;Members of the Covenant staff laid down their lives attempting to protect the children in their care. The preparation and actions of the Covenant staff most assuredly saved lives. Our community will continue to mourn the broken innocence of the Covenant school children and those who were lost to us,&#8221; city council member Pulley said.
Pulley, as The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ex-fbi-agent-turned-nashville-councilman-recalls-horror-of-school-shooting" target="_blank" rel="noopener">previously reported</a>, was a former FBI agent who leapt into action when he learned of the school shooting. &#8220;I immediately went into that mode and went to the scene. But when I got there, I had to remember that I’m a councilman and not a police officer. I didn’t want to interfere &#8230; I went to the church to try to help however I could. I have an instinct to protect and serve, but I knew that wasn’t my role this time.&#8221;
Cooper remarked that the city needed to come together. &#8220;When words just can&#8217;t carry the weight of what is in our hearts, we must reach out to each other to help each other carry the load,&#8221; he said. &#8220;To think of all the hugs they would have had and all the hugs we can still give each other.&#8221;
Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee responded to the shooting on Tuesday night, calling it a &#8220;tragedy beyond comprehension.&#8221;
&#8220;All of Tennessee was hurt yesterday, but some parents woke up without children, children woke up without parents and without teachers, and spouses woke up without their loved ones,&#8221; Lee said, adding that his wife, Maria, woke up this morning without one of her best friends, Cindy Peak — one the six victims killed during the mass shooting.
Peak, a Louisiana native, filled in as a substitute teacher for the school, and was said to have been a strong Christian.
&#8220;She had an unwavering faith in Christ,&#8221; Bill Broyle, brother, told <a href="https://www.tennessean.com/story/news/crime/2023/03/29/nashville-school-shooting-update-lawmakers-delay-gun-bill-discussions/70057400007/">The Tennessean</a>. &#8220;She was a strong believer. She would want a positive approach on this to help God&#8217;s kingdom on earth.&#8221;
U.S. Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) told reporters on Tuesday that he doesn&#8217;t believe Congress can solve mass shootings in the nation.
&#8220;We&#8217;re not gonna fix it,&#8221; he told reporters Tuesday. &#8220;Criminals are gonna be criminals,&#8221; he continued, adding that Congress would only &#8220;mess things up&#8221; and that action would better be spent trying to &#8220;change people&#8217;s hearts.&#8221;
Police have not yet officially announced a motive but the shooter left a manifesto behind which indicated that in addition to targeting The Covenant School, she had also considered other locations to attack.
