The hosts of ABC&#8217;s &#8220;The View&#8221; weighed in on rumors that Donald Trump Jr., President-elect Donald Trump&#8217;s oldest son, had split from longtime fiancée Kimberly Guilfoyle, responding on Thursday to the news that she&#8217;d been appointed to serve as U.S. Ambassador to Greece.
In typical fashion, the midday talk show&#8217;s hosts — all of whom have expressed intense dislike for the president-elect and his family — used the news to bash the Trumps, saying that it must be a relief for Guilfoyle to no longer be forced to &#8220;deal with&#8221; Trump Jr.

There was a brief disagreement between the cohosts over who actually would pay for the residence (the U.S. government foots the bill for that) after which Griffin continued, suggesting that Guilfoyle had simply been playing along with the Trumps for months in order to get what she wanted out of the deal.

&#8220;I agree,&#8221; cohost Sunny Hostin jumped in, adding, &#8220;She&#8217;s a winner. She is winning. She doesn&#8217;t have to deal with Don Jr. anymore. Maybe she does. Maybe they&#8217;re polyamorous. Who knows? All I know is she&#8217;s gonna be in Greece. She&#8217;s going to be enjoying the sun. And I&#8217;m not mad at her.&#8221;
Cohost Joy Behar offered her thoughts as well, asking, &#8220;Is Greece far enough? I mean, don&#8217;t they need an Ambassador to the South Pole or something?&#8221;
Trump Jr. was spotted holding hands with socialite Bettina Anderson in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Monday, prompting questions about the relationship. Neither Guilfoyle nor Trump Jr. has addressed those questions, but the president&#8217;s son did respond to Guilfoyle being named ambassador.

President-elect <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/donald-trump" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Donald Trump</a> announced three new appointments for ambassadorships on Tuesday night as he continues to fill out key roles for his incoming administration.
Trump appointed Kimberly Guilfoyle to serve as the United States Ambassador to Greece.
&#8220;For many years, Kimberly has been a close friend and ally,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Her extensive experience and leadership in law, media, and politics along with her sharp intellect make her supremely qualified to represent the United States, and safeguard its interests abroad.&#8221;
He added, &#8220;Kimberly is perfectly suited to foster strong bilateral relations with Greece, advancing our interests on issues ranging from defense cooperation to trade and economic innovation.&#8221;
Guilfoyle said in a statement that she was honored to accept the nomination and that she looked forward to earning the support of the U.S. Senate.
&#8220;President Trump’s historic victory is bringing hope and optimism to the American people and to freedom-loving allies across the world,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It was the democratic values born in Greece that helped shape the founding of America.&#8221;

&#8220;Tom was born and raised in Southern California, and earned a BA and JD from the University of Southern California and University of San Diego where he was a member of Law Review,&#8221; Trump added. &#8220;Congratulations Tom!&#8221;
Trump also announced that he nominated Ronald Johnson, who served as Trump&#8217;s Ambassador to El Salvador during his first term in office, to serve in his second term as the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.
&#8220;Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State Nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our Nation’s security and prosperity through strong America First Foreign Policies,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;He also served our Country for over twenty years with the Central Intelligence Agency after a distinguished career in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret.&#8221;

Jordan B. Peterson: Where are we?
Spencer Klavan: We are on the sight of a miracle. This is what&#8217;s called the Pynx. It comes from a Greek word meaning “closely packed together.” From 507 B.C. onward, the Athenian citizens would gather here to debate and discuss the fate of their city. There was nothing, basically, that they couldn&#8217;t decide if they voted on it here in almost every context — in war, in peace. This was the site where the Ecclesia, the Democratic Council of Citizens, met to debate and vote on every question you can imagine. There was almost no choice that couldn&#8217;t be made here by the people and by a vote. Initially, we think it had about a 5,000 person capacity. Most of the original Pynx is no longer visible at this point. It is remarkable to consider. You come up here, you sacrifice to Zeus, who is, you know, Zeus of the Council, Zeus of the Gathering. And then that cry goes out: “Who wishes to speak?” And you&#8217;re gazing out upon this sparklingly new row of columns rising up effectively out of the hill as you spoke.
The closest thing to the Pynx in modern America is the town hall. In the painting called &#8220;Free Speech&#8221; by Norman Rockwell, a man gets up and just addresses the crowd. It refers to our American belief that every man is created in the image of God and endowed with liberty by his Creator. That&#8217;s the spirit of the Pynx alive in America.

We believe fundamentally in the same idea that the Greeks had of equality before the law and freedom of speech. It doesn&#8217;t matter who you are or where you&#8217;re from. You get a say. That&#8217;s the idea. What&#8217;s astonishing about this place is the temple not far from here, the Temple of Zeus (Olympian Zeus), was built under a tyranny. Cleisthenes, who was of these very famous and wealthy aristocrats, led what became a popular uprising. And every other city around this region reacted in the same way. They had an uprising, a revolution, and the installation of a tyranny because that&#8217;s a natural response, a revolution to extreme wealth and equality. This sort of thing has happened since time immemorial. The miracle to me is that what happened instead in Athens, they turned to this guy Solon, and they gave him the sole archonship of the city. He canceled the slavery of debt, but what he didn&#8217;t do is redistribute property or take tyrannical control. So that choice had left the Athenians in this unique position among all their contemporaries. They still had this inkling, this tradition, that actually there was another course here.

Peterson: How did the democratic state arise to begin with? Why did the aristocrats abandon their power or distribute it? What emerged to foster that? 
Klavan: Well, it&#8217;s a great story of high morals and low venal ambition. At the end of the sixth century B.C., leading into the fifth century, we get what we would now call a democracy. Cleisthenes, in an allegiance with the Spartan King Cleomenes, marshals the people to his aid. What you end up with is an aristocrat who is so cornered that the only people he can turn to are the people. So that&#8217;s where you get this extremely direct democracy. They would meet on this hill, which they then chiseled out into this audience space, and they would ask, “Who wants to speak?” There was still a hugely powerful aristocracy. But fundamentally, what you now had was a situation in which anybody within the citizen role, from the lowest farmer to the bluest blooded aristocrat, had something to say. It&#8217;s a shocking turn of events, and it makes Athens distinctive for the rest of its history. During the Persian War, when they beat back this massive empire — whereas the Persian forces were being driven by the lash of their great king, who was the embodiment of Ahura Mazda — these guys were fighting for their freedom, and it was only because they stood up for that that we even have an idea of democracy at all. It was itself a bad word in antiquity. It was very suspicious to a lot of people.

Peterson: Yes, well, why would you give the rabble a voice? 
Klavan: Why, indeed. Freedom inevitably creates more potential for chaos. The genius of the American founders was that they lived during a time when these questions were being reexamined and reanimated, and the founders were looking out at this enormous expanse of land and territory. And they were looking back at Athens and saying, “Well, ok, this is very beautiful that they fought for their freedom. But ultimately, of course, they ended up in a kind of disarray.” The Peloponnesian War comes, so they were looking back at the fall of that and thinking, well, it&#8217;s really Rome, the Republic of Rome, and the representative government that works best. Our whole idea of politics comes from the word polis, and a polis is a city. From that, we have our word politique, which is the art, the technique of gathering together in community and living life together. That&#8217;s not just a list of laws. There&#8217;s so much more to politique, to the art of politics and of community. And what Aristotle says is that mankind is a political animal, and by that he doesn&#8217;t mean that we&#8217;re born naturally into the world with an interest in tax policy or economic figures. What he means is that everywhere we live, we live in structured community together. The question is going to be how? What is the most just? The best way to organize our lives? That&#8217;s what politics is.

Peterson: In the Judeo-Christian tradition, in Exodus, Jethro tells Moses that tyrant judge plus rabble isn&#8217;t a good model of government; there has to be hierarchical levels intermediating, and that&#8217;s the alternative to the tyranny and the desert. It&#8217;s something like the hierarchical organization of authority, which is, by the way, how your brain works too. It interacts with the world in nested concepts that are hierarchically structured. If that hierarchy is performing optimally, then you get the right balance between chaos and order. Then you could see in democracy that the Judeo-Christian tradition and the Athenian tradition stack. The combination of those two in some sense is the core of modern conservatism. Power should be distributed down to the hierarchy, to the lowest, most local possible level of decision. And you could say, “Well, that should just be democracy where everyone has their voice.” But the problem with that is it gets very, very fractious, and it doesn&#8217;t scale.
Klavan: The problem with democracy is that it devolves into mob rule, which opens the way for a strong man and a tyranny.
Peterson: That&#8217;s what people clamor about when they talk about the danger of populism.
Klavan: Yes, exactly.
Peterson: The mob has gotten out of hand; now, they&#8217;re going to elect a tyrant.
Klavan: Really, the republic is a perpetual motion machine. It&#8217;s designed to take that cycle and just freeze it essentially.

The following is a transcript excerpt from Dr. Jordan Peterson’s lecture on the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=te-s7e1XAvk">Trial of Socrates</a>. He discusses why Socrates decided against a defense, and how elevating your aim and creating an ideal leads to the process of continually recapitulating yourself.

Socrates’ trial. He was tried by the Athenians for failing to worship the correct gods and corrupting the youth of Athens by teaching them and asking them questions, which is a great way to corrupt people. He knew the trial was coming; Athens was not a very big place. It only had about 25,000 people. Everybody knew everybody. Everybody knew who the powerful guys were. Everybody, including Socrates, knew that the trial was a warning to get out of town: “We are going to put you on trial in six months and the potential penalty is death. Got that?” So Socrates had a chat with his compatriots and they were contemplating fair means and foul to set up a defense for him, or he could leave so that he could not be tried and put to death — and he decided that he was not going to do that. He also decided that he was not going to even think about his defense. And he asked, why? This is quite an interesting thing: He asked, why? 
He told one of his friends that he had this voice in his head — a daemon or a spirit, something like that — that he always listened to. That was one of the reasons he was different from other people because he always listened to this thing. It did not tell him what to do, but it told him what not to do. It always told him what not to do. If it told him not to do something, then he did not do it. If he was speaking and the little voice came up and said, “No, no,” then he shut up and he tried to say something else. He was very emphatic about this, and he said that when he tried to plan to evade the trial or even to mount his own defense, the voice came up and said, “No, do not bother with it.” And he thought, “Well, what the hell do you mean by that? There is a trial coming, and I am going to be put to death.”
He eventually concluded that he was an old guy. He was in his 70s. Perhaps the next 10 years were not going to be that great for him. He got a chance. Maybe the gods were giving him a chance just to bow out, to put his affairs in order, to say goodbye to everyone, to avoid that last descent into catastrophe — which might have been particularly painful for a philosopher — and to walk out of the world on his own terms. The point I am making with that is that Socrates attended to this internal voice that at least told him what not to do, and then he did not do it. Of course, Socrates was a very remarkable man; we still hear about him today, and we know that he existed.

As you elevate your aim, you create a judge at the same time. Because the new ideal — which is an ideal even if it is just an ideal position that you might occupy or if it is still conceptualized in that concrete way — that becomes a judge because it is above you. Then you are terrified of it. Maybe that is why you might be afraid when you start a new job. Because this thing is above you and you are terrified of it and it judges you. That is useful because the judge you are creating by formulating the ideal tells you what is useless about yourself, and then you can dispense with it and you want to keep doing that. Then every time you make a judgment that is more elevated, there is more useless you that has to be dispensed with. Then if you create an ultimate judge, which is what the archetypal imagination of humankind has done, say, with the figure of Christ, because if Christ is nothing else, he is at least the archetypal perfect man and, therefore, the judge. You have a judge that says, “Get rid of everything about yourself that is not perfect.” Of course, that is also what God tells Abraham. He says to be perfect, to pick an ideal that is high enough.
You can do this. The thing that is interesting about this is, you can do it more or less on your own terms. You have to have some collaboration from other people, but you do not have to pick an external ideal. You can pick an ideal that fulfills the rule of ideal for you. You can say, “If things could be set up for me the way I need them to be, and if I could be who I needed to be, what would that look like?” You can figure that out for yourself. Then instantly you have a judge. I also think that is part of the reason people do not do it. 
Why do people not look up and move ahead? The answer is, you start formulating an ideal, you formulate a judge, and it is pretty easy to feel intimidated in the face of your own ideal. That is what happens to Cain versus Abel, for example. It is really easy to destroy the ideal instead of trying to pursue it, because then you get rid of the judge. But it is way better. Lower the damn judge if it is too much. If your current ambition is crushing you, then maybe you are playing the tyrant to yourself and you should tamp down your ambitions, not get rid of them by any stretch of the imagination, but at least put them more reasonably within your grasp. You do not have to leap from point one to point 50 in one leap. You can do it incrementally.
But I really like this idea. I think it is a profound idea — the process of recapitulating yourself continually. It is a Phoenix-like process. You are shedding all those elements of you that are no longer worthy of the pursuits that you are valuing. Then I would say the idea here is that as you do that, you shape yourself ever more precisely into something that can withstand the tragedy of life and that can act as a beacon to the world. That is the right way of thinking about it — maybe first to your friends and then to your family.
It is a hell of a fine ambition, and there is no reason that it cannot happen. You know, every one of you knows people who are really bloody useful in a crisis and people that you admire. You can think of all those people you admire as partial incarnations of the archetypal Messiah. That is exactly right. The more that manifests itself in any given person, then the more generally useful and admirable that person is in a multitude of situations. We do not know the limit to that, but people can be unbelievably good for things. It is really something to behold.

At least 79 people drowned early Wednesday morning, and hundreds more are feared dead after an overcrowded boat of migrants sank in the Mediterranean Sea near Greece.
The shipwreck occurred 47 nautical miles from the Greek town of Pylos. Greek officials have rescued more than 100 passengers from the sea, <a href="https://www.thenationalherald.com/president-sakellaropoulou-departs-for-kalamata/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">housing</a> them in nearby Kalamata. 
&#8220;According to the people, there were 750 people on board&#8230; We now hear reports of a shipwreck and fear they are true,&#8221; Alarm Phone, a trans-European network that supports rescue operations and vehemently <a href="https://twitter.com/alarm_phone/status/1669001422480846850?cxt=HHwWhMC9ye78vakuAAAA" target="_blank" rel="noopener">opposes</a> strong border policies, said on <a href="https://twitter.com/alarm_phone/status/1668913096667144193" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Twitter</a>. 
According to the <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-65901005" target="_blank" rel="noopener">BBC</a>, survivors spoke of as many as 500 to 700 people on the boat, with regional health director Yiannis Karvelis saying, “The number of the people on board was much higher than the capacity that should be allowed for this boat.”
The <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/14/world/europe/greece-migrants-boat-sank.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ship</a> set sail from Tobruk, Libya, intending to reach Italy, according to <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/seventeen-drown-100-rescued-after-migrant-shipwreck-off-greece-2023-06-14/?utm_source=Sailthru&amp;utm_medium=Newsletter&amp;utm_campaign=Daily-Briefing&amp;utm_term=061423" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Reuters</a>. The vessel was 65-100 feet long and mostly carried young men from Egypt, Syria, and Pakistan. The shipwreck is the deadliest in Greece since 2015.
The Greek Coast Guard said the boat was first spotted late Tuesday by the E.U. border agency Frontex in international waters. Italian authorities alerted Greece of the boat’s presence, and the Greek Coast Guard approached the vessel and offered help. The Coast Guard said the migrants “refused assistance and stated their desire to continue their voyage.” A few hours later, the vessel veered from side to side before capsizing around 2:00 am. After the boat sank, the Coast Guard and military began a “wide-ranging search and rescue operation” looking for survivors and recovering the dead.
Greece is one of the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2023/06/14/at-least-78-dead-in-worst-shipwreck-off-greece-in-years/?sh=159da68035e4">main routes</a> into Europe for migrants from the Middle East, Asia, and North Africa with its close proximity to Turkey. During the 2015-2016 immigration crisis, nearly 5.2 million migrants reached European shores, with 857,000 arriving in Greece. 
“The shipwreck brings to the fore once again, in the most tragic way, the need to dismantle the international smuggling rings that endanger the lives of migrants,” Greece’s Migration Ministry <a href="https://migration-gov-gr.translate.goog/en/deltio-typoy-ypoyrgeio-metanasteysis-kai-asyloy/?_x_tr_sl=auto&amp;_x_tr_tl=en&amp;_x_tr_hl=en&amp;_x_tr_pto=wapp" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> Wednesday.

United Nations data <a href="https://data2.unhcr.org/en/situations/mediterranean" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shows</a> that 71,000 people arrived in southern Europe via sea this year, with nearly 6,500 arriving in Greece. More than 1,000 have died taking these sea routes this year. The country also took in 70,000 Ukrainian refugees in 2022.
Immigration was a <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/21/world/europe/greece-elections-migrants-mitsotakis.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">key issue</a> in the 2023 Greek Legislative Election. Mitsotakis defended his strict immigration policies, including <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/08/14/world/europe/greece-migrants-abandoning-sea.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">expelling</a> asylum seekers by sea and sending them to Turkey.
In 2022, a U.N. report <a href="https://mena.iom.int/news/deaths-migration-routes-mena-highest-2017-iom-2022-data-reveals" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found</a> that migration deaths were at their highest since 2017, with 84% of those who died traveling from the Middle East and North Africa to Europe via sea routes going unidentified.

A Greek shipwreck hunter has located a British Royal Navy Submarine that sank during a mission 80 years ago, Athens News Agency (ANA) <a href="https://www.amna.gr/en/article/736652/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Wednesday. 
The HMS Triumph sank in 1942 with 64 people on board; since then, its location has been a mystery. Kostas Thoctarides, a successful Greek diver who has located several other vessels, made it his mission to locate the Triumph. Twenty-five years later, he found the sub 670 feet deep in the Aegean Sea off the coast of Greece. 
&#8220;It was the hardest and most expensive mission I have ever carried out in my life,&#8221; Thoctarides <a href="https://www.amna.gr/en/article/736652/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> ANA. &#8220;The history of the submarine is multi-aspected and unique in naval chronicles,” he added. 
In a <a href="https://www.facebook.com/kostas.thoctarides/posts/pfbid02pPmFbLmpNtyckZddRtrnaPKd3pnFTroNFb35jT8v4eWqYtSmwaKiY4WfybLHjtCyl?ftag=YHF4eb9d17" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> on social media, Thoctarides explained that to find the vessel, he utilized archives from the United Kingdom, Greece, Germany, and Italy, in addition to other resources. He said that researching using primary historical sources was paramount to the search, which he began after learning about the sub&#8217;s disappearance in 1998. 
The diver shared fascinating footage of the sub, which shows the conning tower, gun tower, deck gun, an external torpedo tube, and the helm and compass. &#8220;The plug of the right torpedo, located at the tower height, has opened and the MK VIII torpedo is halfway out of the submarine,” Thoctarides said in his post.

The HMS Triumph — a 275-foot T-class submarine — was discovered with an eight-degree starboard tilt and its periscopes and hatches down, pointing to it being in a deep dive in its last moments, <a href="https://www.ekathimerini.com/culture/1212769/greek-diver-discovers-long-lost-british-world-war-ii-submarine/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Greek newspaper Kathimerini. The door to the gunnery is still open, the outlet notes. 
Launched in 1938, the Triumph carried out 20 missions, including rescues of Allied soldiers and attacks against Axis ships, CBS <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/diver-finds-hms-triumph-world-war-ii-submarine-vanished-1942/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reports</a>. The sub reportedly carried out missions to land MI9 agents and special operations executives. It’s believed that the last attack the Triumph carried out was against an Axis cement freighter, the outlet adds. 
For its last mission, the Triumph departed Alexandria with orders for two special operations and a patrol of parts of the Aegean Sea, according to Kathimerini. After that, it was expected to return to England for maintenance.

Thoctarides believes the sub was likely sunk from a large explosion, though he isn’t sure what may have caused it. He said that torpedos of the same type were discovered in the surrounding area, leading him to speculate that on its last mission, the &#8220;Triumph fired more than one torpedo.&#8221;
“The final cause of the sinking appears to have been a high-power explosion in the anterior section of the submarine,” he said. “The wreck site is treated with respect as it is a wet grave of 64 people.”
The Triumph was officially declared missing in January 1942.

Now, a couple of things here that stick out with Biden&#8217;s latest remarks.
First, readers of The Daily Wire know that anytime Biden says, &#8220;You think I&#8217;m kidding?&#8221; or &#8220;Not a joke,&#8221; then the president is usually not being square with his audience.
The second thing is that one might be tempted to chalk this anecdote up to Biden&#8217;s old age, yet history tells a different story.
Way back in 2012, several facelifts and a few brain cells ago, Biden made the exact same joke to a group of <a href="https://www.politico.com/blogs/politico44/2012/08/vp-im-joe-bidenopoulos-133993" target="_blank" rel="noopener">patrons</a> at a Greek diner in Ohio while on the campaign trail.
&#8220;Hi, I&#8217;m Joe Bidenopoulos,&#8221; he said to laughs while encouraging his audience to, &#8220;Ask George,&#8221; who would tell them that Biden is &#8220;the most Greek Irishman he’s ever known.&#8221;

Similar to every other weird ethnic joke, he&#8217;s made similar claims on numerous occasions, so this one can&#8217;t be blamed on senility. It&#8217;s just Joe being Joe — which is to say he&#8217;s always been a blowhard.

The <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/great-britain" target="_blank" rel="noopener">British</a> Museum is reportedly in talks to give <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greece" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Greece</a> one of the museum&#8217;s most iconic displays, the Elgin Marbles.
According to a <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/entertainment-arts-63846449" target="_blank" rel="noopener">report</a> from Ta Nea, a Greek newspaper, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and British Museum Chairman George Osborne have been discussing in secret a potential return of the ancient artifacts.
Ta Nea claimed the deal was in an “advanced” stage, with a source telling the outlet that the deal was about 90% completed. The talks have reportedly been going on for over a year.
Following the report, the British Museum has “pledged” to not “dismantle” its collection, <a href="https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/wireStory/british-museum-reportedly-talks-parthenon-sculptures-94398422" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Associated Press, but did not directly address whether Osborne and Mitsotakis had been meeting.
“As the chair of trustees said last month, we operate within the law and we’re not going to dismantle our great collection as it tells a unique story of our common humanity,’’ the museum said Saturday. “But we are seeking new positive, long-term partnerships with countries and communities around the world, and that of course includes Greece.”
The Elgin Marbles, also <a href="https://www.britannica.com/topic/Elgin-Marbles" target="_blank" rel="noopener">known</a> as the Parthenon Marbles, are ancient marble statues that were featured throughout the Acropolis of Athens in Greece. Many of the artifacts were from the Parthenon, which was the Greek temple to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. The artifacts were taken to Britain in the early 1800s.
Thomas Bruce, known as Lord Elgin, was a British diplomat who obtained permission from the Ottoman Empire to take away the marble statues now prominently displayed in London. His move was controversial at the time, but Elgin argued it was necessary to preserve the artifacts.
Several pieces Elgin removed were from the Parthenon’s famous massive 520-foot frieze that had been damaged during a <a href="https://greekreporter.com/2017/09/26/september-26-1687-when-the-venetians-bombarded-the-parthenon/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">battle</a> between the Ottomans and the Venetians in 1687.
After getting permission to “to take away any pieces of stone with old inscriptions or figures thereon,” he orchestrated the shipping to England from 1801 until 1812. In 1816, he sold the artifacts to the royal authorities at a loss.
Since 1941, Greece has pushed to have the artifacts returned, but Britain has so far declined in part because British law makes it extremely difficult for the museum to sell or give away artifacts.
Mitsotakis, who has been prime minister of Greece since 2019, has pushed for reunification, stating that he thought the two countries could come up with a compromise. “I don’t want to speak publicly about the discussions that we have had,” he said on Monday. “But I think there is a better sense of understanding that maybe a win-win solution can be found that will result in a reunification of the Parthenon Sculptures in Greece, while at the same time also taking into consideration concerns that the British Museum may have.”
The British Museum is also facing demands from Egyptian activists to return the Rosetta Stone, which British soldiers also took during the early 1800s.

A Ukrainian cargo plane traveling from Serbia to Jordan crashed in Greece on Sunday, killing all eight crew members on board.
According to preliminary reports, the crash followed a request by the pilot for an emergency landing due to engine failure.
Serbian officials stated that the plane was transporting more than 25,000 pounds of military supplies, including mortar and training shells made in Serbia and bound for Bangladesh.
The cargo plane was reportedly a Soviet-built An-12 turboprop aircraft that went down approximately 25 miles away from the nearest airport.
A Reuters report <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/europe/cargo-plane-crashes-near-greeces-northern-city-kavala-2022-07-16/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stated</a> that witnesses saw the aircraft coming down in flames before exploding on impact around midnight local time.
Ukraine&#8217;s Meridian Airline operated the aircraft and <a href="https://www.dw.com/uk/merydian-pidtverdyv-katastrofu-svoho-litaka-an-12-u-hretsii/a-62500814" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared</a> that all eight crew members had been confirmed dead in the crash. Reuters reported that six bodies had already been recovered from the crash site.
Due to the odor from the wreckage and the weapons it carried, locals were told to remain inside, keep their windows shut, and wear a mask as a precaution. Explosive experts were reportedly sent to the scene to rule out any concerns of foul play.
<a href="https://www.rferl.org/a/ukraine-dangerous-cargo-crash-greece/31947054.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">According to</a> Radio Free Europe, a large gathering of emergency vehicles were deployed to the crash site, including fire trucks, ambulances, and police cars.
A series of <a href="https://apnews.com/article/greece-thessaloniki-plane-crashes-cdec3d751beed40bb46189e01b252571" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explosions</a> were also reported for about two hours following the crash. The mortars and shells on board the aircraft led to reporters and others in the area being pushed back to a radius of 400 meters from the crash site.
The cargo was unrelated to Ukraine&#8217;s military defense against Russia&#8217;s invasion. The invasion, launched on February 24, has led to sanctions against Russia by numerous nations, including strong sanctions from the U.S.
The U.S. has also continued sending billions of dollars to support Ukraine&#8217;s defense effort. Earlier in the month, the U.S. and World Bank combined to send another $1.7 billion in assistance to the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/ukraine">Ukrainian</a> government to support <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/health-care">health care workers</a> in the war-torn nation.
On Tuesday, The Associated Press <a href="https://federalnewsnetwork.com/government-news/2022/07/ukraine-gets-1-7b-in-fresh-aid-to-pay-health-care-workers/">reported</a> that the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) announced that the funds were being provided to help stop Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s “brutal war of aggression.”
The Daily Wire previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/u-s-announces-another-round-of-1-7-billion-in-aid-to-ukraine">reported</a> that USAID administrator Samantha Power told the AP that while Putin’s “assault on Ukraine’s public services continues, the United States is rushing in with financial support to help the government keep the lights on, provide essential services to innocent citizens and pay the health care workers who are providing lifesaving support on the frontlines.”
USAID has now sent about $4 billion to Ukraine since the February invasion from Russia began. In addition, the U.S. government has sent more than $7 billion total since the war started, according to the report.
Russia&#8217;s invasion of Ukraine has also been an important point of discussion in President Joe Biden&#8217;s Middle East tour, which included stops in Israel and Saudi Arabia.

In a turn of events that played out like a real-life homage to the Tom Hanks movie &#8220;Castaway,&#8221; a partially-inflated ball played a starring role in saving a stranded swimmer.
A North-Macedonian vacationer known only as Ivan, 30, was reportedly swept out to sea on July 10, while swimming with friends near Myti Beach in Kassandra, Greece — but a child&#8217;s toy came to the rescue just in time, allowing him to survive some 18 hours alone in the water before he was rescued.
According to <a href="https://metro.co.uk/2022/07/14/man-survives-18-hours-at-sea-by-clinging-on-to-football-lost-on-beach-16997110/">local reports</a>, Ivan and a friend, Martin Jovanovski, got caught up in strong currents near the coast and were swept away — and although several friends who had gone to the beach with them quickly notified the Coast Guard of the situation, the two beach-goers were eventually declared &#8220;lost at sea.&#8221;
On Sunday, July 11, — 18 hours after his friends had seen the two men get whisked away by the current — rescuers were finally able to locate Ivan and a Greek Coast Guard <a href="https://dailywire.com/news/photo-army-chopper-pilot-nails-insane-landing-to-airlift-injured-stranded-climber/">helicopter</a> was able to pull him from the water.

With Ivan when he was pulled from the sea was a small inflatable ball that he said he had used to stay afloat after it drifted toward him in the water. Even though the ball had not been fully inflated when it reached him, Ivan said it had been just enough to help him keep his head above the waves.

Her sons Tryphon, 11, and Thanos, 6, had lost their ball nearly two weeks earlier while playing on Evgatis Beach — on the Greek island of Lemnos — when the waves had swept it out of their reach and then out to sea.
Somehow the ball drifted another 80 miles — and, fortunately, into Ivan&#8217;s path — in the ten days after the boys lost it on June 30.
Ivan was treated at a nearby hospital and released, but his friend, Martin Jovanovski, was still lost at sea at the time he was rescued.

Researchers say a marble head of the legendary <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/greece">Greek</a> and Roman hero Hercules has been recovered from a 100-year-old archeological site off the coast of an island in Greece. 
The head was recovered at the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/shipwreck-credited-with-inspiring-the-goonies-found-off-oregon-coast">wreck</a> of a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/italy">Roman</a> ship that went <a href="https://www.whoi.edu/know-your-ocean/ocean-topics/ocean-human-lives/underwater-archaeology/antikythera-shipwreck/">down</a> about 2,000 years ago in the Aegean Sea off the island of Antikythera, which is close to Crete. The ship, believed to be some kind of a trading or cargo ship, was first found in 1900, but archaeologists continue to uncover artifacts from the sea floor. 
“In 1900, [sponge divers] pulled out the statue of Hercules and now in all probability we’ve found its head,” archaeologist Lorenz Baumer<a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2022/jun/21/marble-head-of-hercules-pulled-up-from-roman-shipwreck-site-in-greece"> told</a> the Guardian. “It’s a most impressive marble piece. It is twice lifesize, has a big beard, a very particular face and short hair. There is no doubt it is Hercules.”

Hercules, a mythological strongman, was required to do 12 near-impossible tasks by the gods to atone for killing his family after he was put into a frenzy by Hera, the wife of Zeus.
These labors included things like killing monstrous lions and hydra-creatures as well as cleaning the horrifically dirty stables of a local king by using his brawn to reroute two rivers. A sculpture of the legend&#8217;s body was previously recovered from the shipwreck during a previous expedition more than a hundred years ago. 
Now, researchers just <a href="http://antikythera.org.gr/2022/06/20/2888/">completed</a> another survey of the sea floor, finding several key artifacts, including the marble head of Hercules. It was the second phase of a five-year underwater exploration of the wreck, which is scheduled to last between 2021 and 2025.
The time the crew could spend excavating was limited as they were more than 150 feet under water. 
“It’s so deep they can only be down there for 30 minutes,” Baumer said, according to the Guardian. “But now we have an idea of what has been hiding under those rocks … each find helps us piece together more context in our understanding of the ship, its cargo, the crew and where they were from.”
In addition to Baumer, the project has involved the efforts of Dr. Angeliki G. Simosi of the Swiss School of Archaeology in Greece, as well as the Ephorate of Underwater Antiquities, a government agency. The president of the Hellenic Republic has also provided funding for the project. 
Other objects found during the May 23 to June 15 expedition included human teeth, a lead anchor collar, bronze and iron nails, and the plinth of a marble statue. 
Baumer said the shipwreck was an “extremely rich” site with a lot more possibility in future expeditions.
“You never know what archaeology will deliver tomorrow, but what we do know is that the Antikythera wreck is an extremely rich site, the richest in the ancient world,” he said.

This past weekend, Kyriakos Mitsotakis was elected prime minister of Greece. Like his father, former Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis, he is a conservative in a society addicted to the opium of populist socialism.
To call socialism an opiate is to be too kind. It is a poison, and to watch it slowly kill my ancestral homeland is painful. When I would vacation in Greece in days gone by, my Greek friends would find my anti-socialist rants amusing. I was, after all, a patriotic American conservative from the Mitsotakis family.
But it&#8217;s not so funny anymore. Many of the jobs Greeks seek are outside Greece. Some young Greeks learn skills that they would need to work abroad — English and German language skills, technologies, and medicine. Otherwise, there is the tourism sector — and not much else.
There is always the option to go to one of the public universities in Athens, but students would have to put up with the full-time anarchist <a href="https://www.tovima.gr/2019/05/24/international/mitsotakis-stresses-law-and-order-national-unity-prespa-accord-tax-cuts/">presence</a> there. Police are not allowed on university grounds, so anarchists throw firebombs and attack people, and then retreat back into their state-sponsored sanctuaries.
Anarchists and their criminal companions have taken over entire neighborhoods, and the recent leftist government just looked the other way. Many of the officials in former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras&#8217;s SYRIZA party were once street rabble themselves, and they have the support of the street rabble parties of other European countries. SYRIZA had a cruel way of taunting the Mitsotakis family by granting many weekend furloughs to imprisoned Marxist terrorists — including the November 17 <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/nov/10/greek-terrorist-dimitris-koufodinas-prison-parole-global-outrage">terrorist</a> who murdered Pavlos Bakoyannis, my cousin&#8217;s brother-in-law.
Kyriakos was elected with a promise to change all of that. As <a href="https://www.wsj.com/articles/greek-voters-turn-to-growth-11562532361">reported</a> by The Wall Street Journal, he &#8220;pledges to cut tax rates — to 20% on businesses in two years from 29%, and on lower individual incomes, while slashing property taxes. He’s also promising a major round of deregulation. &#8230; Mr. Mitsotakis recognizes that fiscal stability requires strong economic growth — and now he has persuaded voters.&#8221;
Furthermore, to fulfill his promise to restore law and order, Kyriakos appointed Michalis Chrysochoidis (known as the &#8220;Terrorist Hunter&#8221; for his work in hunting down and capturing the November 17 terrorist leadership) as citizen protection minister. &#8220;Security is the greatest asset. Without security, democracy rots. We are here to work with all our strength to build a feeling of security for citizens,&#8221; he <a href="https://greece.greekreporter.com/2019/07/09/michalis-chrisochoidis-greeces-terrorist-hunter-returns-to-center-stage/">said</a> upon accepting his appointment. &#8220;All people should feel that their neighborhood belongs to them.&#8221;
Back in 1992, Leslie Gelb <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/06/12/opinion/foreign-affairs-macedonia-for-greece.html">wrote</a> in The New York Times about the foreign policy of Prime Minister Konstantinos Mitsotakis. Gelb wrote: &#8220;The conservative Mr. Mitsotakis is the most pro-American Greek leader in a very long time. He consummated a controversial naval base agreement with the U.S. He recognized Israel and got tough on terrorism.&#8221; The foreign policy of his son will likely be the same, with even more urgency now that Turkey has moved into Moscow and Iran&#8217;s orbit.
President Donald Trump called Kyriakos on Tuesday. <a href="https://greece.greekreporter.com/2019/07/10/donald-trump-congratulates-new-greek-pm-kyriakos-mitsotakis/">According</a> to the prime minister&#8217;s office, &#8220;Mr. Mitsotakis told Mr. Trump that the priority of the new Greek government is to fight bureaucracy and stimulate investment.&#8221;
It won&#8217;t be easy. But, God-willing, Kyriakos may turn things around and bring a new day to Greece.
