A parent dropping off a child at a home daycare in Hopkins, Minnesota, on Wednesday witnessed a brutal attack that turned into a murder scene. 
Authorities said a 41-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter were later found stabbed to death at the home daycare the woman owned after a parent who witnessed the attack in the home&#8217;s basement called police. The killer was the woman&#8217;s husband and the young girl&#8217;s father, according to police.
Authorities said the husband shot himself after killing his wife and daughter. Six other children were at the home daycare at the time of the attack, but none of them were physically harmed. Authorities have not released the names of the victims or the suspect.
The Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families lists Kristen Brown as the owner of the home daycare and shows that she was licensed on February 1, 2019. The Daily Wire also reviewed a Facebook page belonging to Kristen Brown that featured photos of a daycare called Brown Bear Childcare.

&#8220;This is a horrific, tragic situation for any community, especially here in Hopkins, where we don’t see this type of crime,&#8221; Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson said.
&#8220;There&#8217;s no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call,&#8221; Johnson added. 
He confirmed six children who “were all very, very young children” were removed from the home daycare. Neighbor Amanda Marx witnessed the massive police response unfold from across the street around 9 a.m. CT.  
“Then they came out from the back and said, ‘Get the crime scene tape,” she said. Shortly after, she watched police escort the remaining children out of the house. Marx <a href="https://www.audacy.com/wben/news/national/minnesota-daycare-killings-brown-bear-hopkins-a4057d1d7c5a166e10bc3298f7f184fb">said</a> she had never met the couple and was unaware there was a daycare. 
At 12:23 p.m., Burnsville police <a href="https://www.fox9.com/news/burnsville-homicide-connected-hopkins-daycare-deaths-police-say">responded</a> to a separate stabbing at a home where they found a 78-year-old woman dead. Burnsville Police Chief Matt Smith said the victim was a &#8220;close family relative&#8221; of the suspect in the Hopkins incident, and that the suspect had recently lived in the home where the woman was found dead.
Brown&#8217;s Facebook shows she opened the daycare center in 2019 so that she could work from home with her firstborn, who was born in October 2018. 
“As much as I loved my previous positions, I believe that it is time to return to child care so that I can be home with her,” she <a href="https://www.facebook.com/brownbearmn">said</a>. She described the day-to-day routine in her home daycare as a “well-rounded experience.”

A West Michigan father reportedly killed his wife and six children before setting their home ablaze and taking his own life in a gruesome murder-suicide that police described as an “unspeakable tragedy.”
On the morning of July 24, deputies assisting the Grand Haven Township Fire Department responded to a house fire near the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. As smoke engulfed the home, firefighters entered to search for victims, only for law enforcement to discover a horrific scene inside.
Authorities said Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, used a handgun to fatally shoot his wife, Amanda Karolkiewicz, 39, and the couple’s six children before taking his own life. Police have not released the identities of the victims’ children, who included four boys, ages 5, 11, 12, and 15, and two 11-year-old girls. Two of the children had been adopted into the family. The medical examiner ruled the cause of death for all of the victims to be homicides from gunshot wounds.

“Our hearts go out to those families, the neighbors, the coworkers, the teachers, the students of Grand Haven Public Schools, and the friends of the victims. This is an unspeakable tragedy that we may never completely understand why it happened,” he added. 
Police believe the fire was intentionally set in multiple locations throughout the interior of the home. The family’s pets also died from the fire or smoke inhalation. Authorities said they do not believe any suspects remain at large.
“The investigation at this point shows that this was a murder-suicide, with the fire being started after the murders,” Sparks said at a Monday press conference, noting investigators do not know the exact circumstances leading up to the tragedy. “We believe that this incident could have started, you know, the night before, and then carried over into the morning.” 
Sparks added that the basement floor of the house was more damaged than the main floor. 
Just weeks before the murder-suicide, Amanda Karolkiewicz posted multiple TikTok videos of trips she took to Canada and China earlier this month with her boys and two adopted daughters.

“By far one of the funniest and coolest experiences of my life! What an awesome experience with my precious daughters,” she wrote. “We are so proud of their Chinese heritage.”
The mom of six shared a video of the family’s July 4 celebration at Stony Lake in Michigan, which shows a quick glimpse of the stone-faced father lighting a firework. <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mandykarolk/video/7655129358817905933">Another TikTok video</a> dated June 24 shows the mom getting ice cream with her boys in Quebec, Canada, writing: “The most delicious, produced-to-order ice cream- unlike anything we have ever eaten!” 
Back in April, the family took a spring break beach trip, according to Amanda’s <a href="https://www.tiktok.com/@mandykarolk/photo/7625820447916952846">TikTok page</a>, which featured photos of her with her husband, Kristopher.
Mandy Karolkiewicz was a dedicated teacher, her parents said in a <a href="https://www.detroitnews.com/story/news/local/michigan/2026/07/27/sister-of-one-of-victims-of-grand-haven-township-family-dead-public-not-to-believe-theories/91061528007/">statement</a> to The Detroit News. 
“Our daughter Mandy was a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students,” the statement said. “We treasured every moment we had with her and her six children, and words cannot adequately express our devastation.”

A North Carolina man is accused of torturing his 19-year-old girlfriend for months before she was found dead inside an apartment, according to court documents.  
Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to a 911 call on May 1 after Thomaz Kenon Hamilton, 24, reported that his girlfriend, Isabella Mary Alexandria Stroupe, was unresponsive, <a href="https://fox11online.com/news/nation-world/man-faces-murder-rape-charges-after-19-year-old-girlfriend-allegedly-tortured-report-torture-charlotte-north-carolina-death-homicide-investigation-killed-murdered-raped-sex-sexual-assault-blood-true-crime">according</a> to Fox 11 News. 
Officers found Stroupe dead inside an apartment in east Charlotte.  <a href="https://www.wbtv.com/2026/05/06/19-year-old-woman-found-dead-charlotte-apartment-was-tortured-months-affidavit-says/">According</a> to an affidavit cited by WBTV, she was wearing “minimal clothing” and was allegedly tied to a bed with a tow strap.
Investigators said Stroupe suffered multiple traumatic injuries, including broken and fractured bones as well as stab wounds. Her death was ruled a homicide. 
Hamilton, who authorities said was dating and living with Stroupe, allegedly told investigators they had been having sex when she suffered a heart attack. Investigators said the evidence was inconsistent with that account. 
Police said they recovered what appeared to be a bloodstained knife wrapped in cellophane, along with a sword, a baseball bat, multiple cell phones, clothing with possible blood, and a bloodstained mattress. 
According to the affidavit, investigators concluded that “Stroupe was being tortured over a period of several months and that Stroupe would have been physically unable to provide consent for vaginal sexual intercourse.”
Police arrested Hamilton on May 5 and charged him with first-degree murder and rape in connection with Stroupe’s death, <a href="https://www.charlottenc.gov/cmpd/News-Information/Newsroom/New-page-124">according</a> to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. 
Stroupe’s family later created a<a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/help-give-isabella-a-proper-goodbye"> GoFundMe</a> to help cover funeral expenses, saying her death “has left a huge hole in our lives.” 
“I loved Isabella deeply. She was a total bookworm, always reading and sharing her favorite stories with me,” Stroupe&#8217;s sister said. “She loved fan fiction and My Little Pony, and her creativity brought so much joy to our family. Remembering her passion for books and the happiness she brought to those around her makes this loss even harder.”

More details have emerged about the aftermath of reality star Taylor Frankie Paul throwing metal barstools as she raged against her boyfriend and accidentally hit her young daughter with one of the stools in 2023.
Video footage of the incident went viral earlier this month, and fans were so outraged that it led to Paul&#8217;s season of “The Bachelorette” getting yanked from ABC just days before it was scheduled to air. 
Paul’s ex-husband Tate Paul, the father of the child allegedly struck by a flying stool, called the police several times after the domestic violence incident. Those recordings were released by <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/03/27/taylor-frankie-paul-ex-tate-phone-calls-with-police/">TMZ</a> on Friday.
One recording includes audio of Tate expressing concern for his daughter. He also told law enforcement that Taylor’s mother, Liann, had been coaching her daughter on what to say.

By the time stools started flying, Tate and Taylor were divorced and Taylor was in a relationship with Dakota Mortensen, who is seen on video bearing the brunt of the reality star’s rage. Tate was involved because his daughter was present during all the drama, and he filed for full custody shortly after it all went down.
During one of the call recordings, Tate confirmed that his daughter had a “small” goose egg on her head, which allegedly was the result of being struck by the chair. 
Taylor, meanwhile, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/taylor-frankie-paul-assault-video-fallout-just-took-a-worse-turn-with-custody-drama">claimed</a> during an episode of “The Viall Files” podcast last year that her daughter didn’t have any injuries. She admitted that she was out of control on the evening in question.
“I was feeling so low I went and drank that night,” the reality star said on the podcast. “…and Dakota picks me up and he’s angry that I drank.”
Taylor said she was “so sad” at the time. “I remember, like, throwing things, and I don’t know my daughter is on the couch,” she went on. “We had babysitters there, so I think they’re upstairs sleeping.”
“I’m, like, so gone I don’t care, and I throw another chair,” she said, also telling the podcast host, “We didn’t know if it hit her or not, it might have not hit her at all…” Taylor also claimed the child had no “noticeable injuries” and insisted “everything was good.” 
Tate and Taylor were married from 2016 until 2022. TMZ previously reported that Taylor earned back shared custody about six months after the incident. The “Secret Live of Mormon Wives” star pleaded guilty to aggravated assault in that case and later had two more cases brought against her following additional domestic assault accusations.

A wealthy Russian former MMA fighter has been <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15684583/Wealthy-Russian-beat-girlfriend-FaceTiming-Barron-Trump-jailed-four-years.html">sentenced to four years in prison</a> following a violent, jealousy-fueled rampage in a London apartment, an attack that was interrupted by an unlikely witness: Barron Trump.
Matvei Rumiantsev, 22, the son of a prominent Russian coffee tycoon, was sentenced Friday at Snaresbrook Crown Court, concluding a high-profile case centered on a brutal, hour-long attack during which the victim feared she &#8220;might die.&#8221;
Prosecutors said Rumiantsev flew into a &#8220;jealous rage&#8221; in January last year after discovering the victim’s friendship with President Donald Trump’s youngest son. The violence escalated when Rumiantsev answered a FaceTime call from Barron on the woman’s phone.
During the call, Rumiantsev showed Barron the woman’s face before grabbing her by the hair, throwing her to the floor, and kicking her in the stomach while calling her a “slut” and a “whore,” according to court testimony.
Despite being thousands of miles away in Florida at the time, Barron Trump, then 18, spent several minutes trying to figure out how to contact British emergency services. In a recorded 999 call played for the jury, he told operators: &#8220;I just got a call from a girl … she’s getting beat up. It’s really an emergency, please.&#8221;
The victim later <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-15505703/Russian-ex-MMA-fighter-guilty-beating-girlfriend-FaceTiming-Barron-Trump-cleared-raping-her.html">testified</a> that Barron Trump “helped save my life. That call was like a sign from God at that moment.&#8221;
In sentencing, the judge delivered a stinging rebuke of Rumiantsev’s character, describing him as &#8220;given to jealousy&#8221; and possessing a volatile temper. The judge also criticized Rumiantsev for being &#8220;totally unrepentant,&#8221; continuing to blame the victim and refusing to take responsibility.
&#8220;Your lack of insight and empathy was apparent at trial,&#8221; the judge said.
Rumiantsev was sentenced for actual bodily harm and perverting the course of justice. The latter charge stemmed from what the court described as &#8220;repeated efforts&#8221; to subvert the legal process. After his arrest, he used a police station phone to pressure the victim and later wrote to her from Belmarsh prison, convincing her to briefly withdraw her statement before she eventually retracted the withdrawal.
Rumiantsev, who attended an elite £80,000-a-year boarding school in Cambridge, was cleared of charges of rape and strangulation. However, the judge noted the severity of the sustained physical attack.
The legal consequences for the Russian national may extend beyond his prison term; Justice Bennathan warned Rumiantsev that he now faces the possibility of deportation from the United Kingdom following the completion of his sentence.

The footage wasn’t new or hidden; it had already circulated and was public, and had even been discussed across platforms tied to Disney’s broader media ecosystem, including Hulu.
Producers decide how to use a show&#8217;s video. They can build a storyline around it, downplay it, leak it, or bury it entirely, but they are never unaware of it. So the idea that ABC didn’t know about a widely discussed incident, one already publicly tied to Paul, doesn’t add up.

The truth is, the Bachelor franchise is still alive, but it’s no longer the cultural force it once was. This cancellation is a symptom of a show making riskier decisions to stay relevant. I hadn’t watched the show in nearly a decade, and I was looking forward to watching this season; that’s how much attention this casting was already generating.
At its peak, The Bachelor was the world&#8217;s biggest reality show. It created cultural moments, dominated conversations across the country, and has, at times, produced real relationships that turned into marriages and families. That era is gone. Ratings have declined, and relevance is no longer guaranteed.
When that happens, casting changes. It stops being about love and becomes about spectacle. Paul brought exactly that, with a built-in audience, an existing social media fanbase, and instant attention. But she also came with a highly visible, controversial past marked by serious and widely discussed incidents. ABC made a calculated decision to bet on the attention, manage the risk, and hope the controversy held long enough to carry the season.
That gamble collapsed. And when a franchise declines, entertainment value starts to outweigh better judgment. This time, the line between compelling television and unacceptable risk became impossible to ignore.
The fallout isn’t just corporate. Contestants rearranged their lives, left their jobs, and upended everything for this opportunity, including Paul. She didn’t misrepresent herself; ABC chose her, fully aware of her history. And like everyone else, she stepped away from her children and her life for a show that ultimately pulled the rug out from under her.
And at the center of it all is something far more serious than television: domestic violence in the presence of a child, which should not be minimized. What the footage revealed is the tension between entertainment and the seriousness of the issue. The incident is serious, and ABC knowingly cast someone with a very public history.

“This is called physical abuse,” Dakota Mortensen says in <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2026/03/19/video-of-taylor-frankie-paul-beating-dakota-mortensen/">leaked cellphone footage</a> as his then-girlfriend, “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” star Taylor Frankie Paul, can be seen swinging her fists at his head, pulling his hair, and squeezing her arms around his neck. Appearing to be <a href="https://pagesix.com/2025/09/10/entertainment/where-taylor-frankie-paul-ex-dakota-mortensen-stand-ahead-of-bachelorette-filming/">half</a> Mortensen’s size and barely able to land a punch, Paul almost reads like a harmless hot girl throwing a tantrum. 
That is, until she manages to lob a metal bar stool across the room at Mortensen and it reportedly strikes her 5-year-old daughter, Indy. Screaming “Mommy!” Indy breaks into tears as the camera goes black and the sound keeps rolling.
“Your daughter just got hit in the head with a metal chair … Help your daughter, Taylor,” Mortensen says, asking Indy if she’s okay.
“Get away from my daughter,” Paul screams at the top of her lungs. When Mortensen tries to calm her down, she yells, “Shut the f*ck up!” The doorbell rings, and law enforcement enters the home. 
It&#8217;s horrifying to watch. But it also illustrates why domestic abuse perpetrated by <a href="https://www.domesticshelters.org/articles/identifying-abuse/women-as-the-abusers">women toward men</a> goes largely underreported: If little Indy hadn’t been caught in the crossfire, would Mortensen have called the cops on behalf of his own safety? And would anyone have believed he, a man, was a victim of assault? 
Considering his abuser, barely <a href="https://share.google/jRZ7cC54DSO5HKwJj">five-foot-six</a> mom of <a href="https://people.com/all-about-taylor-frankie-paul-kids-11734066">three,</a> Taylor Frankie Paul, who rose to fame by launching the girl power <a href="https://people.com/the-secret-lives-of-mormon-wives-sex-swinging-scandal-8701211">MomTok trend</a>, drumming up ratings as one of Hulu’s fan-favorite “<a href="https://secretlivesofmormonwives.fandom.com/wiki/Taylor_Frankie_Paul">Mormon Wives</a>,” and raking in profitable collabs with high-profile <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DUD9zkEDJ2j/">family</a>-friendly <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DQDYELZD35N/">brands</a>, the answer is probably not. 
Somehow, with all the baggage, Paul passed ABC’s <a href="https://deadline.com/2026/03/taylor-frankie-paul-video-bachelorette-allegations-abc-1236760617/#:~:text=ABC%20and%20Warner%20Horizon%20do,the%20end%20of%20last%20year.">background check</a> to become “The Bachelorette” for <a href="https://www.today.com/popculture/tv/bachelorette-canceled-taylor-frankie-paul-rcna264134">season 22</a> before it was canned. Guys, are we really that short on eligible ladies who haven’t previously pled guilty to <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cp9vryml4d1o">aggravated assault?</a> Imagine if ABC threw 30 eligible ladies into a home with a known domestic abuser, <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/how-much-alcohol-do-people-drink-on-bachelor-2017-1#:~:text=%22A%20lot%20of%20people%20drink,and%20forget%20about%20the%20cameras.">unlimited booze</a>, and a <a href="https://fashionmagazine.com/flare/tv-movies/the-bachelor-fantasy-suites/">Fantasy Suite</a> for the next season of “The Bachelor.”  
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Justice Department in 2010 funded a <a href="https://www.proquest.com/docview/1022749184/BB18D2BD89FB4CE6PQ/4?sourcetype=Scholarly%20Journals">survey</a> suggesting that men, not women, were most often the victims of “intimate partner physical violence” over the course of a year. It disrupted earlier stats from <a href="https://stacks.cdc.gov/view/cdc/21948">the National Violence Against Women Survey</a>, which showed roughly 22% women reporting themselves as victims of domestic abuse and 7% of men claiming the same.
Current statistics regularly point to <a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK499891/">women</a> being the majority of reported victims of domestic violence. So was that one study just a fluke? Are men really the violent monsters they’re made out to be? It turns out, men are much <a href="https://www.safealliance.org/blog/silent-struggle-why-men-are-less-likely-report/">less likely to speak up</a>. 
The lines between <a href="https://www.domesticshelters.org/articles/identifying-abuse/women-as-the-abusers">self-defense and abuse</a> often become blurry when it comes to obviously larger and stronger men fending off female abusers. And many times, <a href="https://austinpublishinggroup.com/psychiatry-behavioral-sciences/fulltext/ajpbs-v1-id1018.php">religion</a> can serve as a barrier to men ultimately walking away from an emotionally abusive scenario at home. As in reports from victimized women, a commitment to a family&#8217;s <a href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S1359178923000630">children</a> can take priority over self-preservation. 
For all the talk about advocating for victims, men are more likely to assume they <a href="https://theconversation.com/we-dont-have-a-cultural-place-for-men-as-victims-why-men-often-dont-tell-anyone-about-sexual-abuse-252630#:~:text=Stigma%20if%20they%20do%20tell&amp;text=Some%20were%20blamed%2C%20told%20they,on%20themselves%20and%20their%20families.">won’t be believed</a>. Even medical and mental health professionals have been known to treat men with more skepticism than women when handling instances of abuse. “Seeking formal help frequently led to secondary victimization in the form of statements or behavior that could cause them further distress,” trial attorney <a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/contributors/wendy-l-patrick-jd-mdiv-phd">Wendy L. Patrick</a> noted of a study on men who self-reported. “In fact, seeking formal help itself had a negative impact on well-being, aggravating their victimization.” On top of that, these men may carry residual <a href="https://findanexpert.unimelb.edu.au/news/101592-%E2%80%98we-don%E2%80%99t-have-a-cultural-place-for-men-as-victims%E2%80%99--why-men-often-don%E2%80%99t-tell-anyone-about-sexual-abuse#:~:text=Understanding%20why%20men%20don't,cope%20with%20their%20problems%20independently.">shame</a> from asking for help for the rest of their lives.
With instances of domestic violence on the <a href="https://www.fbi.gov/news/press-releases/fbi-releases-domestic-violence-special-report#:~:text=Over%20the%20five%2Dyear%20period,million%20victims%20of%20domestic%20violence.">rise in the U.S.</a>, it’s hard to ignore a systemic breakdown <a href="https://atlantalegalaid.org/we-can-help-stop-domestic-violence/">we all play some part</a> in trying to heal.

Not previously available to the public, the footage leaked this week amid allegations of yet another <a href="https://people.com/mormon-wives-stops-filming-for-season-5-as-taylor-franke-paul-is-involved-in-domestic-violence-incident-exclusive-sources-11926978">domestic violence incident</a> between the reality star and her ex, Dakota Mortensen, with whom she now <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/moms/taylor-frankie-paul-kids-rcna230299">shares a son</a>.
“As anyone who has seen the video will understand, this is a deeply upsetting situation,” <a href="https://people.com/dakota-mortensen-statement-after-taylor-frankie-paul-abuse-claims-attack-video-bachelorette-11930337">Mortensen</a> said. Nick Reiner, the 32-year-old son of the late director Rob Reiner, has been arrested in connection with the brutal murder of both of his parents, according to a report published Monday by <a href="https://pagesix.com/2025/12/15/celebrity-news/rob-reiner-and-wife-micheles-son-nick-arrested-for-murder-in-parents-stabbing-deaths/">Page Six</a>.
Nick Reiner, who has a lengthy history of drug addiction, was arrested and is currently being held at the Parker Center Jail in downtown Los Angeles, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff&#8217;s Office. His bail was set at $4 million.
The news broke on Sunday that the Oscar-nominated director, 78 — known for iconic films like &#8220;When Harry Met Sally&#8221; and &#8220;A Few Good Men&#8221; and cult classics like &#8220;This Is Spinal Tap&#8221; and &#8220;The Princess Bride&#8221; — and his wife of more than 35 years, Michele Singer Reiner, 68, had been found dead in their Brentwood home that afternoon.
Later reports confirmed that the couple was found by their daughter, Romy, 28, who quickly called authorities to the scene and tipped them off that her brother may have been involved. Reiner and his wife had lacerations that an early TMZ <a href="https://www.tmz.com/2025/12/15/rob-reiner-wife-michele-throats-slit-family-member-argument/">report</a> said were &#8220;consistent with knife wounds,&#8221; but later updates stated that they had both had their &#8220;throats slit&#8221; by their attacker.
The family released a statement, saying, “It is with profound sorrow that we announce the tragic passing of Michele and Rob Reiner. We are heartbroken by this sudden loss, and we ask for privacy during this unbelievably difficult time.”

Rob and Michele Reiner had three children together since they wed in 1989: Jake, 34; Nick, 32; and Romy, 28.
In the hours that followed the news of their murder, several family friends were seen in the vicinity of their home. Actor and comedian Billy Crystal, a longtime friend of the Reiners, was seen outside the home, as was fellow actor and comedian Larry David.
Actor Cary Elwes, who starred as Westley in &#8220;The Princess Bride,&#8221; shared a photo of two directors&#8217; chairs — one bearing his name and the other Reiner&#8217;s — with the caption, &#8220;No words.&#8221;
Others noted that Reiner, who was often at odds with conservatives over politics, had been very gracious in the aftermath of the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

On Thursday, a majority of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/house-democrats" target="_blank" rel="noopener">House Democrats</a> once again voted against legislation that seeks to ensure <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/illegal-immigration" target="_blank" rel="noopener">immigrants</a> who commit sex crimes or domestic violence can be deported from the United States.
The <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/119th-congress/house-bill/30?q=%7B%22search%22%3A%22Violence+Against+Women+by+Illegal+Aliens+Act%22%7D&amp;s=3&amp;r=2" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bill</a>, called the &#8220;Violence Against Women by Illegal Aliens Act,&#8221; <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/16/us/house-bill-deport-immigrants.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">passed</a> with the support of 213 Republicans and 61 Democrats. Another 145 Democrats and no Republicans voted against it. Fifteen other lawmakers did not vote.

It also contains provisions that apply to crimes of stalking, child abuse, child neglect, child abandonment, or violating the portion of a protection order &#8220;against credible threats of violence, repeated harassment, or bodily injury&#8221; to the protectee.
Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD), the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, <a href="https://x.com/HouseJudiciary/status/1879916098608386552" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> the bill was redundant when it came to cracking down on foreign national criminals and would <a href="https://x.com/RepNancyMace/status/1879908971219161577" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;set back&#8221;</a> efforts to protect victims because it could be used against these survivors if they are immigrants who resist their abusers.

The man whose 2015 <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20150227014959/http:/swiked.tumblr.com/post/112073818575/guys-please-help-me-is-this-dress-white-and" target="_blank" rel="noopener">photo of a dress</a> caused an internet sensation has pleaded guilty to strangling his wife.
Keir Johnston, 38, recently pleaded guilty to attacking his wife, Grace, during an assault that occurred on March 6, 2022, People Magazine <a href="https://people.com/groom-who-made-the-dress-go-viral-in-2015-admits-he-tried-to-strangle-his-wife-8646499" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. He was previously known for posting a photo of a blue and black dress that appeared to some as white and gold.

Johnston was indicted following the incident, which involved him pinning his wife to the ground, straddling her, and choking her. During that incident, he also threatened to kill her and waved a knife. He reportedly told her, “Somebody is going to die,” according to testimony in the High Court in Glasgow, Scotland, on May 9, The Guardian <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/article/2024/may/10/man-behind-viral-dress-pleads-guilty-endangering-wifes-life" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Grace called for help, saying, “My husband is trying to kill me.”
Chris Macintosh, prosecutor for the crown, told the judge in the case that Grace had few options since the couple lived on the remote Isle of Colonsay.
“There is no permanent police presence on the island, and she was in a situation where she felt trapped,” Macintosh said, according to the Guardian.
The incident began after Johnston discovered Grace had gone to a job interview on the mainland, defying his demands that she not go. Prior to the attack, Johnston was reportedly drinking at a pub and texted his wife: “You should support me but you do not.”
He then went home and passed out. When Grace returned to their home, he “woke up and said that he was going to leave her,” Macintosh told the court. “She went outside the property to stop him leaving. He followed her and pinned her to the ground.”
“[Johnston] placed both knees on her arms, so she was unable to move,” Macintosh added. “He then began strangling her with both his hands. She was initially able to scream and feared for her life and believed Johnston intended to kill her as he was very forceful.”
Grace received several severe bruises from the attack but did not require medical attention.
Johnston’s defense attorney, Marco Guarino, told the court that his client had accepted responsibility for the attack, but the judge, Lady Drummond, denied bail, saying: “I have no need to tell you that this is a serious and violent offense.”
“You repeatedly strangled her, injured her and put her life in danger in what must have been absolutely terrifying circumstances for her,” she added. “I am afraid, Mr Johnston, that your status has now changed, you have been convicted of a very serious crime and you will be remanded meantime.”
Johnston is set to be sentenced on June 6.
Johnston and Grace became famous in 2015 after he posted a photo of a dress Grace’s mother planned to wear at their wedding. The photo posted online showed the dress as either black and blue or white and gold depending on the viewer. Subsequent images of the dress showed that it was a vibrant blue and black, but the original picture fooled man, including this reporter.
New York University neuroscientist Pascal Wallisch <a href="https://www.nyu.edu/about/news-publications/news/2017/april/why-did-we-see-_the-dress-differently--the-answer-lies-in-the-sh.html#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThe%20original%20image%20was%20overexposed,affects%20the%20colors%20we%20see.%E2%80%9D" target="_blank" rel="noopener">explained</a> that people saw the dress differently because of how the brain processes assumptions based on how the dress was illuminated.
“The original image was overexposed, rendering the illumination source uncertain,” Wallisch. “As a result, we make assumptions about how the dress was illuminated, which affects the colors we see.”
If people assumed the dress was photographed in a shadow, it may appear gold and white, while those who believed it was illuminated by artificial light saw it as black and blue.
“This is a basic cognitive function: to appreciate the color on an object, the illumination source has to be taken into account, which the brain does continuously,” Wallisch added.

Pittsburgh police will no longer personally respond to calls that aren’t considered “in-progress emergencies” after recent department policy changes.
Calls not considered “in-progress emergencies” will be <a href="https://www.wpxi.com/news/local/big-changes-pittsburgh-bureau-police-staffing-are-effect/ME4OY4CRSVG4HHDA53GFEYENSU/">assigned</a> by dispatch to a telephone recording unit. The city&#8217;s website states, &#8220;Creation of an enhanced Telephone Reporting Unit (TRU) operating from 7-3 a.m. daily, including weekends. Dispatch will assign reports to the TRU for calls that do not require an in-person response by officers. TRU will NOT be assigned to any &#8220;In Progress&#8221; call where a suspect may be on scene, any crime where a person may need medical aid, any domestic dispute, calls with evidence, or where the Mobile Crime Unit will be requested to process a scene.&#8221;
In addition, between 3 and 7 a.m., when reportedly far fewer 911 calls are made, no desk officers will be present at the six police stations in the city. Instead, call boxes linked to 911 have been installed. During some overnight shifts, there may be only <a href="https://www.wpxi.com/news/local/big-changes-pittsburgh-bureau-police-staffing-are-effect/ME4OY4CRSVG4HHDA53GFEYENSU/">22 officers</a> to cover the entire city.
“It’s enough to cover the entire city in those hours when we have 8% of the time people are calling &#8230; I’m confident in the decisions that we make, that it impacts this bureau and this city in much better way than we have in the past,” Pittsburgh Police Chief Larry Scirotto stated.

Scirotto cited staffing shortages after the city plunged to 740 police officers; at the start of 2023, the city had 835; a full staff is considered 900.
Scirotto said that prior to the changes, roughly one-third of officers worked overnight, but about two-thirds of the call volume came between 2 p.m. and 2 a.m. “So we’re running one shift ragged, under-resourcing it, and over-resourcing another,” he said. “That was why I thought this exercise was so important.”

Bob Swartzwelder, president of the Fraternal Order of Police #1, criticized the plan, saying, “They’re running out of manpower very, very quickly, and they’re getting very taxed.” He acknowledged there could be 25 to 30 officers working during the 3-7 a.m. shift, but said they are executing specialized work. “I think the strategy at this point is a hope and a prayer that they can base everyone on data,” he said. “It may pan out to be correct. It may be disastrous.”

Keke Palmer and Darius Jackson’s relationship has been in the news since July 2023. It resurfaced in November of last year with more information, and now, in February 2024, there are still more rumblings coming from these two. My assessment is and always has been that this was an incredibly toxic relationship. But regardless of its toxicity, there are some actions that will never be acceptable in any relationship.
The private life of Palmer and Jackson started to become public in July 2023 when Palmer went to a concert in Las Vegas and was pulled on stage to dance with Usher. Her then-boyfriend, Jackson, took to X to declare his disapproval of her provocative behavior and revealing outfit. By this point, the two already shared a child, and she had given birth just a few months prior.

Then, in November, a month after separating, Palmer released shocking surveillance camera footage of who appears to be her ex, Jackson, beating her in her own home. At the time of the footage release, she was seeking a restraining order and full custody of their then eight-month-old son. Jackson reportedly trespassed into Palmer’s home without her knowledge nor her consent. This is still working its way through the court process, but the behavior she reported of him is beyond despicable.

She shared stills of the footage from her filings in court at the time. In them, Jackson first looks to be forcing her in a certain direction against her will, then has his hand in the air as she loses her balance and falls over the couch, putting her hands up in a defenseless position.

In the court <a href="https://www.today.com/parents/keke-palmer-custody-son-darius-jackson-rcna124585" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filings</a>, she states, “The abuse during our relationship was not just physical, but emotional and manipulative. Darius would ‘love bomb’ me and make me feel like I was the most important woman in the world, only to get extremely distant and cold over a perceived insult to him.” Palmer has repeated that Jackson was very jealous throughout their entire relationship. While this was obviously an incredibly toxic relationship, this abuse was certainly not Keke Palmer’s fault. 
Then, at the beginning of this month, Jackson took to X again, this time, with a message to all the dads who have given up custody:

In another post, he continued, giving advice to make sure God is the center of your relationship:

If you separated these words from the situation he has currently found himself in — having beaten Keke Palmer — I would affirm that this is amazing advice. But you do not get to suddenly become a pastor after we have all seen evidence of horrific footage of you. Even in households of atheists, men know not to put their hands on women. To claim you were beating your significant other because you were not following the Good Book and the Lord? There is no excuse — ever. Let’s not hide behind God. Let’s not turn into a pastor who suddenly has sage words for other men.
I am a firm believer that it is important to weigh in when something goes against your values — so it is important to state this is wrong. This is a situation that should be discussed, not because anyone is prying into the private lives of people (this is information that has been made public), but because it’s important to take a moral position with actual values. This situation includes two people who clearly did not respect each other, nor did they understand who the other was. Toxicity seeped into their relationship, and they never should have been matched in the first place. But no woman should ever go through this, and no woman should suffer abuse. It is never the fault of any person when they are abused.
There is never a circumstance when it is acceptable for a man to put his hands on a woman. Never. Only a coward would ever do that.
