Airline CEOs are calling on Congress to end the Department of Homeland Security shutdown as travelers face longer lines at the airport, and TSA agents are struggling to make ends meet while working without pay.
The department has faced a lapse in funding since Feb. 14 over a dispute regarding federal immigration enforcement policies. TSA, the Coast Guard, and FEMA are among the most heavily impacted agencies, as the Trump administration’s immigration agenda was already largely funded through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” last year.
“Americans-who live in your districts and home states-are tired of long lines at airports, travel delays and flight cancellations caused by shutdown after shutdown,” the letter addressed to Congress said, which was signed by the CEOs of Alaska Air Group, American Airlines, Atlas Air, Delta, Southwest, Fedex, United, JetBlue, and UPS, as well as Airlines for America President and CEO Chris Sununu. The letter was first published in The Washington Post, according to a <a href="https://www.airlines.org/news/airline-ceos-open-letter-to-congress-published-in-the-washington-post/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">press release</a>.
“Yet, once again air travel is the political football amid another government shutdown,” the letter added, saying that the “problem is solvable.”
The letter released on Sunday comes as travelers are headed throughout the United States and around the globe for spring break vacations. The White House confirmed to The Daily Wire last week that 300 TSA agents have quit since the shutdown started, as the essential government employees received an empty paycheck this cycle. The Denver International Airport even asked people to consider giving $10 and $20 grocery store and gas station gift cards to TSA agents. Starting pay for agents can sometimes be under $40,000 a year.
“TSA officers just received $0 paychecks. That is simply unacceptable. It&#8217;s difficult, if not impossible, to put food on the table, put gas in the car and pay rent when you are not getting paid,” the letter added.
“But too many travelers are having to wait in extraordinarily long-and painfully slow-lines at checkpoints. Wait times of 2, 3 and even 4 hours have been reported. Airlines are doing everything we can to mitigate disruption by holding flights for late passengers and rebooking others,” it added.
Talks to end the shutdown have appeared minimal as of late last week, with Sen. Katie Britt (R-AL), the top Republican negotiator on the issue, saying that Democrats have yet to come to the table, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/mounting-frustration-as-senate-dems-dig-in-on-dhs-shutdown?author=Cameron+Arcand&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Hundreds+Of+TSA+Workers+Quit+As+Dems+Dig+In+On+Shutdown" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported.
“TSA officers have gone 74 days without a paycheck in FY26 because of Democrats’ two shutdowns. This is absolutely unacceptable,” Britt posted to X on Monday in response to the airline CEOs&#8217; letter. “Democrats need to end their political posturing, stop using our TSA agents as political pawns, and fully fund DHS.”
However, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) posted last week that “Democrats are ready to fund TSA. Republicans are blocking it. Democrats are ready to fund CISA. Republicans are blocking it. Democrats are ready to fund FEMA. And Coast Guard. Republicans are blocking it.”

Over a dozen Republican attorneys general demanded Wednesday that the Trump administration suspend or yank funding for a taxpayer-funded scientific organization over politically biased climate change activism, according to a letter obtained by The Daily Wire.
Led by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, the GOP officials <a href="https://www.scribd.com/document/1010506858/AG-Letter-To-DOT-DOW-And-DOE">said</a> that a chapter included in the “Reference Manual on Scientific Evidence: Fourth Edition” produced by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine failed to disclose links to climate litigation advocacy. Knudsen demanded that the Departments of Energy, War, and Transportation cut funding to the National Academies over the chapter in question. 
Knudsen <a href="https://content.govdelivery.com/attachments/MTAG/2026/03/10/file_attachments/3579240/2026-03-11%20AGs'%20Ltr%20to%20Agencies%20re%20NASEM_ex%20A.pdf">wrote</a> that the chapter “was designed to influence judges in multi-billion-dollar climate cases, was funded by climate litigation funders, was written by academics with little relevant scientific expertise and documented financial and institutional ties to climate litigation advocacy, and was shaped by a climate plaintiffs’ attorney.”
The letter was addressed to Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy, Secretary of Energy Chris Wright, and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth. The Pentagon declined to comment.
Knudsen said that the academies should be suspended or disbarred from “all federal contracts and grants across the executive branch.” The National Academies received tens of millions of dollars in grant money every year from the federal government. 
&#8220;Taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund efforts that impartially influence judges. Given multiple opportunities, NASEM and NSF still refuse to take responsibility for publishing a biased climate science manual violating their public commitments and legal obligations,” Knudsen told The Daily Wire. “The organizations producing these manuals and pushing their climate agendas on judges must be investigated and all funding to them should stop. As Attorney General, I will continue to sound the alarm until we put an end to their deception.”
The <a href="https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/26919/chapter/1">manual</a> was produced with the Federal Judicial Center to serve as a guide for federal judges. Last month, the judicial center <a href="https://www.wsj.com/opinion/reference-manual-on-scientific-evidence-climate-science-elena-kagan-federal-judges-f8e8604a?gaa_at=eafs&amp;gaa_n=AWEtsqenuW1BIeQcsljVCaPocCtWHummF76Pu_cnQ0KlguiQAeIUNm7GcmAXGmI1sSg%3D&amp;gaa_ts=6997208c&amp;gaa_sig=wVTzH3siKR3DaS1OsCzap4UGuaUWOHjVYeBgLh2Y2IVt5AfO9iotN2ZjJgaB3QunvcBEg3kfNQRJ2dCjybLV0Q%3D%3D">removed</a> the climate chapter from its version of the book after more than two dozen Republican attorneys general warned it could improperly influence their decisions. They <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/taxpayer-funded-science-org-faces-demands-from-gop-officials-over-climate-activism">urged</a> the National Academy in February to do the same. 
One issue raised by Knudsen regarding the flagged chapter was that the manual was funded in part by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation has <a href="https://capitalresearch.org/article/the-activist-side-third-party-litigation-support/">reportedly</a> donated to the Collective Action Fund, a group that has <a href="https://freebeacon.com/latest-news/anti-energy-lawfare-congressional-investigation-uncovers-dark-money-fueling-climate-change-lawsuits-nationwide/">contributed money</a> to climate litigation firm Sher Edling. The attorneys general argue that this creates a conflict of interest and violates the terms of an $875,000 grant from the National Science Foundation to the National Academy to develop the manual. 
The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation told The Daily Wire that it donated $100,000 to the Collective Action Fund in 2017 and hasn&#8217;t provided any more funds to the group since then.
&#8220;We were not involved in either the development or review of the final guide,&#8221; the foundation said. &#8220;As you have likely seen on our website, the focus of our environmental work is not climate-driven but instead focused on conservation of landscapes and seascapes.&#8221;
The attorneys general also pointed to the ties between the chapter’s authors and reviewers and climate change advocacy. Jessica Wentz, one of the authors, is a fellow at Columbia Law School’s Sabin Center for Climate Change Law. She wrote in an <a href="https://climate.law.columbia.edu/sites/climate.law.columbia.edu/files/content/Willow%20amicus%20brief%20-%20FILED.pdf">amicus brief</a> opposing the development of an oil drilling project in Alaska that “the world needs to phase out fossil fuels as rapidly as possible in order to avert potentially catastrophic levels of global warming and climate change.”
The Sabin Center has <a href="https://climate.law.columbia.edu/content/support-us">received support</a> from the Rockefeller Family Fund, which has, in turn, <a href="https://www.npr.org/2024/05/28/nx-s1-4977572/rockefellers-profited-on-fossil-fuels-these-days-theyre-taking-aim-at-the-industry">reportedly</a> funded “a wave of litigation” against the fossil fuel industry. 
Radley Horton, another co-author of the chapter in question, is a professor at Columbia University’s Climate School. Horton, who has <a href="https://www.eli.org/vibrant-environment-blog/educating-judges-climate-litigation-today-and-tomorrow">previously</a> trained judges on climate litigation, has <a href="https://therealnews.com/rhorton1127climate">said</a> that “it’s absolutely critical that there be a global effort to do everything we can to dramatically draw down emissions.”
Columbia University’s Climate School, which has a Center for Sustainable Development <a href="https://ccsi.columbia.edu/donate/">funded</a> by the Rockefeller Brothers, a group that has also donated to the Collective Action Fund. 
Those acknowledged in the chapter included Michael Burger, who is representing Honolulu in litigation against energy companies, and Michael Gerrard, who has advocated for “decarbonization” through climate-related lawsuits. Burger serves as counsel for Sher Edling, the climate activist firm. 
In the initial stages of planning for the fourth edition of the manual, it was <a href="https://www.nationalacademies.org/read/26231/chapter/1">suggested</a> by the National Academies that the new manual would be “accessible to judges who might be more skeptical of climate science’s methods and conclusions.” Scientists skeptical of climate change theories were listed off as “not credible.” 
The attorneys general also say that no reviewers of the manual represented “materially different viewpoints on climate science,” which they said was a violation of the National Science Foundation grant. 
In light of these issues, the Republican officials say that the Trump administration should cut funding for the National Academies, which in 2024 received $84 million in contracts or grants from the Department of Transportation, $7 million from the Department of Energy, and $33 million from the Department of War. 
They also called for Congress to initiate an investigation into the development of the manual.
Other states that signed on include Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, West Virginia, and Wyoming.
The National Science Foundation declined to comment.

WASHINGTON—The Trump administration and outside groups continue to prepare for America’s 250th anniversary, unveiling a nationwide transportation campaign that will place patriotic-themed graphics in airports, train stations, and baseball stadiums.
The Department of Transportation on Friday launched its &#8220;Freedom Moves You&#8221; initiative at Washington&#8217;s Union Station. The campaign will feature a series of civics-focused graphics donated by the Heritage Foundation, which DOT says will be displayed at transportation hubs, including New York&#8217;s John F. Kennedy International Airport.
Officials say the materials are intended to spark conversation about American history and the nation&#8217;s founding principles.
“Now more than ever, our nation needs to unite around the shared principles our founding fathers enshrined in 1776,&#8221; Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement. &#8220;America’s 250th birthday is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity [to] bring people together, cherish our national heritage, and inspire the next generation of patriots.”
Among the graphics are slogans such as “It’s Morning Again in America. Again.” Others promote historical tourism, including one that reads “For Your Next Family Vacation, Remember The Alamo.”

“This campaign is probably the biggest that will connect all Americans, because we are all in constant movement,” Monica Crowley, chief of Protocol of the U.S., said at the launch event on Friday. “Every American will have eyes on this campaign in some form or another,” she added.
The DOT is also supporting commemorative passports to be distributed through congressional offices and &#8220;The Great American Road Trip,” a tourism initiative highlighting destinations throughout the country in partnership with corporate sponsors.
Some Democrats have pushed back on the planning for the anniversary. Rep. Maxine Dexter (D-OR) accused the Freedom250 nonprofit, which is affiliated with the National Parks Foundation, of misusing taxpayer funds.
“Today, in a House Natural Resources Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, I exposed Freedom 250 for what it really is—a scam,” Dexter posted on X on February 10, an accusation that organizations have pushed back on, according to the <a href="https://www.usnews.com/news/politics/articles/2026-02-10/potential-conflicts-over-celebrating-americas-250th-anniversary-spill-out-in-congressional-hearing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Associated Press</a>.

For decades, America’s maritime industry has been adrift. As China’s capabilities on the high seas became more lethal, we floundered.

Yet, despite this vital mission, the academy was allowed to crumble and suffer. When I first stepped onto the Kings Point campus last year, I was appalled. Midshipmen were living without consistent heat or hot water, using plastic utensils and paper plates in the mess hall because their dishwasher had been broken for months, and relying on an ancient IT system in buildings that had likely not seen an upgrade since Franklin Roosevelt dedicated the campus in 1943.
These midshipmen serve our country; they should never have been forgotten. America wouldn’t be here without the merchant marine, and the merchant marine wouldn’t succeed without these bright young patriots.

President Trump and I will not allow their needs to fall on deaf ears. These midshipmen deserve a campus that reflects the greatness of the country they serve.
That’s why we’ve been raising the alarm. My team has spent the last year pouring every resource into overhauling this broken system. By cutting through decades of red tape, we are creating an irreversible momentum to propel Kings Point into the 21st century.
We signed a 10-year Memorandum of Understanding with the Army Corps of Engineers, who are now on-site daily to drive these massive infrastructure projects forward. They are operating at the Speed of Trump and bringing a record number of top-tier contractors to the table.
More importantly, we have installed decisive leadership who “understand the assignment” and are returning the regiment to the academy standard for military officers. We have replaced bureaucratic stagnation with an unwavering commitment to getting things done.
We’re already seeing results. Projects that were over budget and delayed are no longer boondoggles. We swiftly upgraded HVAC equipment and installed new equipment to end hot water and heat outages. Barracks and shower facilities are being overhauled for a summer 2026 completion. Feedback from midshipmen has been stellar — they are grateful for an administration that is actually delivering tangible campus improvements.

These upgrades go hand-in-hand with our overhaul of the academy’s curriculum and our mission to recruit elite faculty to shape the next generation of America’s leaders.
By the end of 2026, we will have put more than $350 million into this campus. But this massive campus modernization simply won’t be possible relying exclusively on the annual funding the academy receives. To build the world-class simulators, the brand-new barracks, and the academic facilities these midshipmen need to lead, we must keep the pedal to the metal.
We’re working with our partners in Congress to secure additional support and make Kings Point great again. Upgrading the academy isn&#8217;t just about brick and mortar; it is about strengthening America’s supply chains and national security for the next century. This is a no-brainer for those who believe in an America First future that President Trump is laser-focused on delivering.

Approximately 500 truck drivers were taken off the road for not meeting English proficiency standards in just three days with a “targeted” operation by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) last month.
Operation SafeDRIVE occurred in 26 states and Washington, D.C., from Jan. 13-15, and it’s expected to be the “first phase” to crack down on both drivers and vehicles that might lead to road safety issues.
There were 704 drivers taken off the road in total (about 500 of whom were truck drivers), along with 1,231 vehicles out of 8,215 inspections. Notably, there were 56 people arrested as part of the operation, including those who are in the country illegally or for driving under the influence.
“Operation SafeDRIVE shows what happens when we work together with our law enforcement partners to pull unqualified drivers and vehicles off American roads,” Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said in a statement.
“We need a whole-of-government approach to ensure the Trump Administration’s strong standards of safety are in place to protect American families and reduce road accidents,” he added.
The operation comes as the Trump administration has announced major crackdowns on Commercial Driver’s Licenses for illegal immigrants, especially after three people were allegedly killed on a Florida turnpike by Indian national Harjinder Singh, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-illegal-immigrant-truck-drivers-ended-up-on-americas-roads" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Daily Wire</a> reported. Last May, Duffy signed an order saying that if a driver cannot meet the English proficiency standards, they’ll be taken off the road.
&#8220;The failure to adequately enforce driver qualification standards poses serious safety concerns and increases the likelihood for a crash. As part of the driver qualification standard, FMCSA believes a driver’s failure to comply with the ELP qualification requirements constitutes a safety risk and that this risk was underestimated in previous agency enforcement discretion. Increased enforcement and the consequence of placing a driver out of service, instead of simply citing a driver for the violation, will lead to increased safety,&#8221; the policy <a href="https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/sites/fmcsa.dot.gov/files/2025-05/FMCSA%20ELP%20Guidance%20with%20Attachments%20Final%20%285-20-2025%29_Redacted.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">memo</a> states.
The government spending package signed by President Donald Trump on Tuesday also solidified the president&#8217;s April 2025 <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/fact-sheets/2025/04/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-enforces-commonsense-rules-of-the-road-for-americas-truck-drivers/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Executive Order</a> on the issue, according to <a href="https://www.overdriveonline.com/regulations/article/15816338/funding-bill-signed-into-law-codifies-english-proficiency-as-truck-driver-requirement" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Overdrive</a>.

“When drivers ignore the rules, operate without proper qualifications, or get behind the wheel impaired, they put all of our lives at risk. Operation SafeDRIVE demonstrates the value of focused enforcement and strong partnerships in removing these drivers and vehicles from our roads,” Barrs said.

California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has <a href="https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/news-and-media/california-dmv-extends-date-of-nondomiciled-cdl-action">delayed</a> plans to cancel about 17,000 commercial driver’s licenses held by individuals unlawfully living in the state, giving them an extra 60 days before the licenses are revoked. The extension follows a lawsuit from leftist immigrant advocacy groups, which argue the move is needed to protect people’s ability to work.
The DMV announced Tuesday that it is pushing back the January 5, 2026, revocation deadline to March 6.
Federal officials, led by Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, blasted the Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom, accusing California of ducking accountability after issuing licenses that did not comply with federal law and endangered public safety.
Duffy responded to the news by writing on X: “Gavin Newsom is lying. The deadline to revoke illegally issued, unvetted foreign trucker licenses is still January 5. The potential loss of $160 million in transportation funding is on top of $40 million already withheld from California for failing to enforce federal English-language requirements for truckers. Duffy argues the state was caught ignoring rules requiring proof of lawful presence and work authorization tied to the duration of a license. Federal audits found that some licenses remained valid long after their legal status had expired, while in other cases, officials couldn’t even prove that immigration status had been checked.

Federal scrutiny intensified after a deadly Florida crash in which an illegal immigrant truck driver made an illegal U-turn and killed three people. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said California gave &#8220;an illegal alien a Commercial Driver’s License” who had no “legal right” to be in the United States.
That tragedy highlighted the consequences of weak licensing safeguards. Rather than acknowledge systemic failings, Newsom’s office lashed out at Duffy online, <a href="https://x.com/GovPressOffice/status/1988672753793388708?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">accusing</a> him of lying — even though the DHS and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) identified serious compliance problems, forcing California to finally act.
In reality, California only began revoking the licenses after federal pressure, not out of concern for safety or the rule of law. Even now, the DMV’s  “extension” is being <a href="https://apnews.com/article/commercial-drivers-license-immigrants-california-0eb0b6849e65ae9671fc250109173f83">celebrated</a> by leftist advocacy groups, while trade associations and federal regulators stress that unvetted or ineligible drivers should never have been licensed in the first place. Trucking groups back Duffy’s push to ensure drivers are legally authorized and sufficiently fluent in English to safely operate massive commercial vehicles on American roads.
Newsom’s response, attacking the messenger rather than fixing the system, contrasts sharply with Duffy’s emphasis on enforcement, public safety, and accountability. Duffy has consistently maintained that California violated long-standing FMCSA rules and that his emergency actions were needed because the state refused to comply until penalties loomed.
Meanwhile, California officials continue to frame the conflict around worker protections instead of public safety and legal compliance — despite DHS publicly stating that California issued a CDL to a driver with “no legal right” to be in the country.
In short, the issue reflects a clear divide: Duffy is insisting on law, safety, and federal standards, while Newsom is prioritizing political messaging over serious regulatory failures that could, and already did, cost lives.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he is resetting federal fuel standards that were used by President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration to impose severe regulations on American car manufacturers.
The president unveiled the changes in the Oval Office, promising that the reset of the Biden-era fuel economy standards will save American families a combined $109 billion. The president said he will realign the standards with real world market conditions.
&#8220;Combined with the insane electric vehicle mandate, Biden&#8217;s burdensome regulations helped cause the price of cars to soar more than 425%, and in one case, they went up 18% in one year,&#8221; Trump said. &#8220;Today, we&#8217;re taking one more step to kill the Green New Scam.&#8221;
The president added that his administration&#8217;s action &#8220;is expected to save the typical consumer at least $1,000 off the price of a new car, and we think substantially more than that.&#8221;
Trump was flanked by Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy as well as Republican lawmakers and the CEOs of major American carmakers Ford and Stellantis.
“Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg illegally twisted mileage standards to create an electric vehicle mandate — jacking up car prices for American families and forcing manufacturers to produce vehicles no one wanted,” said Duffy. “I’m proud to stand with President Trump in the Oval Office today to say that those days are over. This administration understands the freedom of every American family starts with affordable cars. That’s why our new standards will make that dream more achievable by letting auto manufacturers produce the cars that fit families&#8217; needs at a lower price.”
Trump&#8217;s move was praised by auto leaders, including Ford CEO Jim Farley, who said in a statement ahead of the announcement, “As America’s largest auto producer, we appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities. We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability. This is a win for customers and common sense.”
Farley said in the Oval Office that Trump&#8217;s move will allow Ford to &#8220;invest in affordable vehicles made in the U.S.&#8221;
&#8220;We believe that people should be able to make a choice&#8221; between gas-powered, hybrid, and electric cars, Farley added. &#8220;And we will invest more in affordable vehicles.&#8221;
Under Biden&#8217;s rules, auto manufacturers were required to increase fuel efficiency to an average of around 50 miles per gallon for vehicles by 2031. The Trump administration took immediate action to eliminate the former president&#8217;s policies of fuel efficiency, and shortly after Duffy was sworn in as Transportation secretary in January, he signed an order to roll back Biden&#8217;s fuel economy standards.

Biden&#8217;s stringent rules, which were imposed under the 1975 Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards, worked as a &#8220;backdoor electric vehicle mandate,&#8221; according to the Trump administration. The White House argues that the reset of fuel economy standards &#8220;will realign&#8221; the Corporate Average Fuel Economy program with what Congress initially intended and will take a major burden off of car manufacturers.
Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa said the Trump administration&#8217;s move would also give Americans more freedom when shopping for vehicles.
&#8220;We look forward to working further with [the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] on environmentally responsible policies that also allow us to offer our customers the freedom to choose the vehicles they want at prices they can afford,&#8221; Filosa said.
A spokesperson for General Motors said in a statement on Wednesday that it supports the goals of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration&#8217;s proposed rules as well as its &#8220;intention to better align fuel economy standards with market realities.&#8221;
&#8220;We have long advocated for one national standard that upholds customer choice and provides the auto industry long-term stability,&#8221; the spokesman said. &#8220;As we review the proposal, we remain committed to offering the best and broadest portfolio of electric and gas-powered vehicles on the market.&#8221;

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation is giving Minnesota an ultimatum, The Daily Wire can first report: revoke illegally issued licenses given to non-domiciled commercial drivers, or face losing over $30 million in federal highway funding.
A Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration audit found that one-third of Minnesota’s non-domiciled commercial driver’s licenses were issued illegally, the Transportation Department shared with The Daily Wire. Minnesota will be given 30 days to revoke the illegally issued licenses, Duffy says, or else it will pay a significant price.
“Our audit exposes yet another example of foreigners taking advantage of Minnesota services under Governor Walz’s watch,” U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy explained. “Minnesota failed to follow the law and illegally doled out trucking licenses to unsafe, unqualified non-citizens — endangering American families on the road. That abuse stops now under the Trump Administration.&#8221;
&#8220;The Department will withhold funding if Minnesota continues this reckless behavior that puts non-citizens gaming the system ahead of the safety of Americans,&#8221; he promised. 
Walz did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Wire.
The move comes after a number of <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/08/21/ice-arrests-illegal-alien-involved-fatal-18-wheeler-crash-caused-illegal-aliens">reports showing that illegal foreign drivers</a> caused deadly crashes, prompting the Transportation Department to zero in on states that refuse to follow the law.
In a letter sent Monday, first reviewed by The Daily Wire, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration informed Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz that his state had issued an alarming number of non-domiciled commercial driver&#8217;s licenses illegally. The administration also outlined that its audit had found that the state issued these licenses to drivers whose &#8220;licenses were valid long after their lawful presence in the U.S. expired&#8221; and drivers who were &#8220;prohibited from holding a non-domiciled commercial CDL.&#8221;

The state also failed to initially verify that some drivers were lawfully in the U.S.
The Transportation Department wants Minnesota to pause issuance of the non-domiciled commercial driver&#8217;s licenses, identify all unexpired non-domiciled licenses that fail to comply with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations, revoke and reissue all the noncompliant licenses that failed to comply with their regulations, and conduct an internal audit to figure out how these massive errors were allowed to happen in the first place.
“Minnesota is openly and blatantly defying our rules, plain and simple,” Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Derek D. Barrs said on Monday. “Under the Trump Administration, states have two choices: meet our standards or face the consequences. Following the law is not optional.”
The move comes after President Donald Trump issued an executive order requiring proficiency in English for American truck drivers.
&#8220;They should be able to read and understand traffic signs, communicate with traffic safety, border patrol, agricultural checkpoints, and cargo weight-limit station officers,&#8221; the president said. &#8220;Drivers need to provide feedback to their employers and customers and receive related directions in English. This is common sense.&#8221;
Following Trump&#8217;s order, the Transportation Department launched an audit of non-domiciled commercial driver&#8217;s licenses and has highlighted severe violations in a number of blue states, including California.

BOSTON—On a brisk November morning, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy shipped up to Boston with two goals: making his forgotten Merchant Mariners remember who they were, and bringing home the Secretaries&#8217; Cup.
That&#8217;s the trophy that goes to the victor of an annual college football game that pits the Merchant Mariners against the Coast Guard, a smaller but beloved version of the annual Army-Navy game. Fans, alumni, and family of the &#8220;Kings Point&#8221; mariners and the Coast Guard travel from all over the country to support their teams.
This year, Duffy and Homeland Secretary Kristi Noem — whose agency includes the Coast Guard — joined their teams for the final showdown of the season. They had a bet: whoever lost would host the other team at their agency back in the nation&#8217;s capitol. It was a rare non-political event attended for the two high-profile politicians, who were there to cheer on their teams and talk trash to each other.
&#8220;Our Merchant Marine Academy, they&#8217;re excited to play on a on a big venue like this,&#8221; Duffy told The Daily Wire ahead of the game. &#8220;And sometimes they don&#8217;t get the attention that they deserve &#8230; they&#8217;re critical as part of America&#8217;s infrastructure and making sure that we can defend ourselves.&#8221;
&#8220;The Merchant Marine Academy, our young men and women go out and make sure we have the capability of supporting the military in doing sea lifts, making sure products are moving, supplies are moving, and our midshipmen provide those services,&#8221; he explained.
The Merchant Marine Academy is housed under the Department of Transportation, which formerly also housed the United States Coast Guard. The &#8220;Coasties&#8221; were moved under Homeland Security&#8217;s umbrella in 2003. But the reshuffling did nothing to the football rivalry, which dates back to 1949.
The Daily Wire spent the day with Duffy as he wandered around Fenway Park, even down to the locker room, where he aggressively hyped up the mariners before they headed out onto the field. &#8220;You guys have more heart, more grit,&#8221; Duffy told the animated mariners. &#8220;So please go kick some Coast Guard ass today!&#8221;

Many of the midshipmen who were at the game were delighted to chat with the transportation secretary, who spent a big chunk of his time hanging out in the stands with them.
&#8220;Oh, yeah,&#8221; Edward Lippert told The Daily Wire, asked if he was a Duffy fan. &#8220;He&#8217;s the man. He&#8217;s the man.&#8221;
&#8220;I love that guy,&#8221; added Christian Meyers. &#8220;I can&#8217;t wait to see him.&#8221;
The two young men, who are both seniors at the academy, responded emphatically when asked what it means to them to be mariners. Meyers will go into Navy aviation after graduation, and Lippert will be sailing on his third mates license in the maritime industry.
&#8220;Oh man, it&#8217;s everything,&#8221; said Lippert. &#8220;I mean, it&#8217;s how cargo moves around the world right? World needs mariners.&#8221;
&#8220;Pretty much everyone here will graduate with a license in the US Coast Guard that&#8217;s capable of operating any boat or vessel in the American fleet,&#8221; he added.&#8221;We move cargo, whatever it be, cars, containers from point A to point B. We&#8217;re what puts food on your shelves.&#8221;
The second mariner conceded that without their work, American lives would be significantly impacted.
&#8220;It&#8217;d be really hard to live,&#8221; he said, asked where Americans would be without them. &#8220;Costs would be insane. I mean, there would be no food in supermarkets. There&#8217;d be nothing. There&#8217;d be nothing without us.&#8221;
Duffy feels that the Merchant Marine Academy has been not only forgotten but downright neglected by other secretaries of transportation, including his predecessor, Pete Buttigieg (&#8220;Boot-edge-edge,&#8221; as Duffy chuckled aside to his kids).
&#8220;They&#8217;ve been shunned,&#8221; Duffy said of the mariners. &#8220;They haven&#8217;t had the investments. They have one of the most beautiful campuses, but no one has  reinvigorated it. No one has invested in it.&#8221;
When Duffy first arrived in Kings Point, New York to visit the Merchant Marine Academy, he found out that these midshipmen had gone four months without hot water. A green energy effort brought in an electric boiler that didn&#8217;t work and ultimately led to the midshipmen going without water for months, he said with a shake of his head.
&#8220;So they&#8217;re taking cold showers. They have mold in in their dorms. Their dishwasher broke. They didn&#8217;t have regular plates and silverware. They had plastic plates, plastic silverware.&#8221;
When he brought it up to the midshipmen, he expected that they would be angry. Instead, he joked, they beat their chests and were proud of their tough situation: &#8220;I said, &#8216;No hot water?&#8217; And they&#8217;re like, &#8216;ROAR!! You&#8217;re damn right we did! No hot water!'&#8221;
He also found out that President Joe Biden&#8217;s administration removed a mural of Jesus Christ on the water from the academy and put it in the basement.
&#8220;Shameful,&#8221; said Duffy. &#8220;It&#8217;s been in the academy for over 50 years!&#8221;
&#8220;I said that&#8217;s it, we are going to we are going to resurrect the painting of Jesus on the water out of the basement and put him back in his place of prominence. And when I mentioned it to the to the midshipman, they lost their minds.&#8221;
He doesn&#8217;t have to &#8220;bring faith back to the academy,&#8221; he said, questioned about the move: &#8220;These are faithful young men and women.&#8221;
One way that he&#8217;s boosting morale is by telling the mariners that the &#8220;black sheep&#8221; is their mascot, leaning into the idea that they are the &#8220;black sheep&#8221; of the academies and need to fight to reclaim their identity. Duffy himself was sporting a Merchant Mariners sweatshirt with the black sheep on it, as were his daughters and son who attended the game with him.
&#8220;I just I think it&#8217;s wrong that we have a great American academy with great young American men and women, that we don&#8217;t respect them,&#8221; Duffy shared. &#8220;They are the black sheep of all the academies, right? And sometimes when you feel a little beaten, you&#8217;re an underdog, you come back, have a little more heart, a little more energy, a little more fight.&#8221;
&#8220;You can see we have our black sheep shirts on,&#8221; he added. &#8220;And we embrace it and we still kick ass. We still have grit. We still crush it like what&#8217;s going to happen today on the football field here at Fenway.&#8221;
The mariners did indeed crush the Coast Guard that day in the very final seconds of the game. Duffy joined them on the field, holding the trophy high above his head as he cheered, exuberantly celebrating with the young men — and even jokingly trash talking Noem, who didn&#8217;t come down to the field for the Merchant Marine Academy victory.
&#8220;Well done man,&#8221; he told the mariners as they left the field, shaking their hands and slapping them on the back. &#8220;Thank you for fighting! Well done.&#8221;

The Biden administration pressured at least 11 American airports to house illegal immigrants despite security warnings, a shocking new Senate report revealed Tuesday.
The Biden White House directed the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) to identify airports where illegal migrants could be held and processed, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/bombshell-report-alleges-biden-team-pushed-airports-house-migrants-risking-safety" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Fox News, citing the 47-page report, entitled &#8220;Flight Risk.&#8221; In some instances, the Biden administration asked federal agencies to &#8220;divert &#8230; resources&#8221; to support the illegal migrants.
&#8220;The Biden-Harris administration made airports and aviation less secure,&#8221; the report states, &#8220;by allowing and encouraging aliens to shelter at U.S. airports, by allowing improperly vetted aliens to fly into and throughout the United States, and by diverting needed federal air marshals to the border.&#8221;
Officials tasked with the effort, however, weren&#8217;t shy about their concerns, internal emails showed.
&#8220;We have received a request from the WH to determine if there are available facilities on airport or surrounding areas… This is an immediate ask so please prioritize this effort,&#8221; one FAA official wrote to the Massachusetts Port Authority, which runs Boston Logan Airport, on October 6, 2023.
A Department of Transportation official responded: &#8220;Yikes, this is definitely Fox News fodder in the making.&#8221;

FAA officials recognized they needed federal approval to house migrants in terminals and other airport facilities under grant-assurance rules, but &#8220;ignored them most of the time when airports used their facilities to house aliens,&#8221; the report stated.
The airport authority also pushed back on the request, saying they&#8217;re &#8220;not designed or resourced to manage the intake of migrant populations,&#8221; adding that it &#8220;would create a host of unintended safety and security consequences.&#8221;
Still, the Boston airport accommodated 352 migrants, shelling out $779,000 on security, cleaning, and transportation.
The targeted airports included Boston Logan, Chicago O’Hare, and New York’s JFK. And they were asked to shelter migrants inside terminals, hangars, or auxiliary buildings.
In Chicago, O&#8217;Hare Airport hosted up to 900 migrants, housing them in a shuttle terminal.
The effort resulted in 329 service calls to police and 26 arrests between April 2023 and February 2024 for crimes that included thefts, disorderly conduct, and a death investigation.
The &#8220;asylum seekers [we]re not restricted to the staging area,&#8221; Chicago officials said at the time.
At JFK airport, the migrant issue resulted in a security breach, after Kleber Loor-Ponce, &#8220;an alien from Ecuador&#8230; ran past a security post into ‘the secure area at [JFK],’ toward two runways.&#8221;
When he was arrested, officers &#8220;found a box cutter and pair of scissors on his person.&#8221;
Department of Transportation officials were also instructed to step in, with some told to create a &#8220;Know Your Rights&#8221; guide for migrants while working with states that track buses delivering border crossers across the country.
Some officials were also &#8220;encouraged to remind local transit agencies that federal grants could be used to move migrants.&#8221;

FMCSA found that PennDOT failed to verify lawful presence and, in some cases, issued licenses that extended beyond the individual’s authorized stay in the United States. As a result, the Transportation Department is threatening to withhold nearly $75 million in federal funding unless Pennsylvania revokes all improperly issued CDLs and corrects the systemic failures that allowed the violations.
The findings emerged amid a nationwide audit of non-domiciled CDLs initiated in June, shortly after Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2025/11/17/ice-arrests-uzbekistan-criminal-illegal-alien-and-wanted-terrorist-driving-18">arrested</a> a suspected terrorist who had illegally entered the United States and received a Pennsylvania CDL earlier in the summer. Secretary Duffy cited this case as evidence of the national-security implications of lax CDL standards and criticized prior immigration policies for enabling such risks. He stated that the Department, under President Donald Trump, is committed to preventing unqualified foreign drivers from operating heavy commercial vehicles on American roads.

USDOT has ordered Pennsylvania to take several immediate steps: pause all issuance or renewal of non-domiciled CDLs and commercial learner’s permits (CLPs); conduct a thorough audit to identify all noncompliant licenses and the procedural failures behind them; and revoke any unexpired, improperly issued licenses to ensure unqualified drivers are removed from service.
This enforcement action follows a broader series of transportation safety initiatives under the Trump administration. Earlier in the year, President Trump issued an <a href="https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2025/04/enforcing-commonsense-rules-of-the-road-for-americas-truck-drivers/">executive order</a> directing the Department of Transportation to strengthen roadway safety, with a particular emphasis on enforcing long-standing English-language proficiency requirements for commercial drivers. The order argues that English proficiency is essential for reading traffic signs, communicating with law enforcement and inspection officials, and performing basic safety and reporting functions. It instructs the FMCSA to rescind its 2016 guidance and implement updated inspection procedures, ensuring that non-English-proficient drivers are placed out of service.
The executive order also directs FMCSA to review irregularities in states’ issuance of non-domiciled CDLs and improve verification of domestic and international driving credentials.
In recent months, Secretary Duffy has introduced several related actions, including emergency restrictions on eligibility for non-domiciled CDLs, a nationwide audit exposing widespread non-compliance, a pro-trucker initiative to reduce regulatory burdens, and new guidelines mandating out-of-service orders for drivers who fail English-language requirements. These steps align with President Trump’s March order designating English as the official language of the United States.

California has illegally issued thousands of commercial trucking licenses to foreign-born applicants, according to the Department of Transportation.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced on Wednesday that California has admitted that it issued 17,000 non-domiciled Commercial Driver’s Licenses to “dangerous foreign drivers,” according to a Transportation Department press release.
“After weeks of claiming they did nothing wrong, Gavin Newsom and California have been caught red-handed. Now that we’ve exposed their lies, 17,000 illegally issued trucking licenses are being revoked,” said Duffy in a statement. “This is just the tip of [the] iceberg. My team will continue to force California to prove they have removed every illegal immigrant from behind the wheel of semitrucks and school buses.”
All holders of illegal CDLs from California have received notices that their licenses will expire in 60 days, according to the Transportation Department. Duffy moved to crack down on illegal CDLs after an Indian national made an illegal U-turn in Florida, causing a wreck that killed three Americans. Authorities arrested 28-year-old Harjinder Singh in August over the crash. Singh is in the United States illegally and obtained his trucking permit from California.
Florida <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/florida-sues-california-over-sanctuary-policies-trucker-licenses-for-illegal-immigrants">responded</a> to the crash last month by filing a lawsuit against California for illegally issuing Singh’s CDL.
“Here in Florida, we can do everything right, we can back the blue, we can enforce the law, we can combat illegal immigration, but we still suffer when Gavin Newsom and liberals on the West Coast allow these illegals in, encourage them, enable them to get these driver’s licenses and then they cross the country and ultimately take lives,” Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said at the time.
Thousands of illegal CDLs have been issued in the United States, allowing thousands of illegal commercial trucking drivers to carry cargo across the country. The problem has been <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/how-illegal-immigrant-truck-drivers-ended-up-on-americas-roads">fueled</a> by states that do not follow federal rules for issuing commercial licenses, such as allowing driver’s tests to be conducted in a language other than English.
