The man behind the federal government&#8217;s comprehensive immigration data recently resigned from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and his former colleagues believe it&#8217;s part of a push to reduce transparency.
Last month, Marc Rosenblum announced his departure on LinkedIn after serving for more than a decade as the department&#8217;s head statistician.
Trump administration officials blocked Rosenblum, who said he was leaving an &#8220;often hostile work environment,&#8221; from publishing monthly data, The Atlantic <a href="https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/2026/08/trump-dhs-deportation-data-ice/688220/?gift=SCYx-5scVta3-cr_IlgTyaEFRlkH1IOppDzGq2xcz9E" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> on Monday. The <a href="https://ohss.dhs.gov/topics/immigration/immigration-enforcement/monthly-tables" target="_blank" rel="noopener">data</a> that remains ends in 2024.
Trump officials continue to tout that they&#8217;re running &#8220;the most transparent Administration in history,&#8221; but the lack of timely immigration data has led even conservative immigration hawks to push back.
The Oversight Project, a nonprofit group advocating for a &#8220;mass deportation,&#8221; sued the Trump administration for failing to respond to outstanding Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for deportation data and has even floated that the public numbers are being inflated.
DHS says &#8220;more than 3 million illegal aliens have left&#8221; the country during &#8220;Trump&#8217;s first year back in office.&#8221; The department estimates that 2.2 million of them self-deported.
According to agency statistics, ICE carried out roughly 300,000 deportations in the first year of Trump&#8217;s latest term, falling short of his lofty goal of carrying out one million removals each year.
Rosenblum formed the Office of Homeland Security Statistics (OHSS) in 2023 with the support of officials across the political spectrum to provide more comprehensive numbers.
&#8220;I’m sad to suspend my career in public service and leave my amazing team,&#8221; Rosenblum wrote in his LinkedIn post. &#8220;My OHSS co-workers are outstanding career federal civil servants. They are smart, mission-focused experts who produce high-quality results in a challenging and often hostile work environment.&#8221;
&#8220;I’ve partnered with hundreds of other fabulous feds over the last decade. I worked side by side with strong, mission-driven contract teams,&#8221; he wrote.
The ex-DHS official went on to express concern with the Trump administration&#8217;s positions.
&#8220;But it will come as no surprise that I’m thrilled to end my relationship with the current administration. Between the war on immigrants, the war on feds, and the war on facts (not to mention the crazy war in Iran and the brazen corruption), I just need a change,&#8221; he said.
Two of Rosenblum&#8217;s former colleagues at DHS who served under the Biden administration told The Daily Wire that the statistician was devoted to the facts no matter how unfavorable they were to the president and his agenda. One of the ex-officials also said Rosenblum&#8217;s comprehensive data helped DHS identify areas where policy changes were necessary.
&#8220;If you don&#8217;t have a commitment to actually looking at data, then at the end of the day, you&#8217;re just gonna lose credibility, your decisions are gonna be based on just wins, and you&#8217;re not gonna be able to be successful. And if we&#8217;re gonna be actually transparent and accountable to the taxpayers you need data,&#8221; the ex-fed said.
The source continued: &#8220;And Marc was one of those people whose commitment was just to the work. I didn&#8217;t know what his political inclinations were at all the entire time I worked with him because many times the data that he wanted to publish didn&#8217;t look great for us (during the Biden administration).&#8221;
Another former Biden DHS official echoed that Rosenblum never showed any partisan leanings and was solely &#8220;a data guy.&#8221;
&#8220;He was able to get all the data points across the entire department and put them in an easy to understand platform. He can pull CBP [Customs and Border Protection] data to show that most of the fentanyl that was arriving into this country was coming from the northern border and talk about Coast Guard actions in the high seas, like apprehending Cubans and Haitians,&#8221; the ex-official said.
&#8220;He would also be able to determine which populations were being targeted by ERO [Enforcement and Removal Operations] and what rate. How many individual screenings at airports across the country. Just generally did the job of pulling all the data for department leaders, the White House, the press, and the public,&#8221; they added.
But it&#8217;s not just former Biden administration officials throwing support behind Rosenblum. His LinkedIn post also garnered a comment from Trump&#8217;s recently departed acting ICE director, Todd Lyons, who wrote that &#8220;it was great to work with you&#8221; while wishing him &#8220;luck with the next chapter!&#8221;
Rosenblum declined to comment on the reasoning for his departure.
In a statement to The Daily Wire, a DHS spokesperson said &#8220;people are always welcome to their opinion,&#8221; adding, &#8220;that doesn&#8217;t make it right or factual.&#8221;
&#8220;We will not comment on personal decisions,&#8221; the spokesperson said.

The suspect accused of shooting a Dallas Independent School District (ISD) police officer with the officer&#8217;s own gun is an illegal immigrant who crossed the border just four years ago, The Daily Wire has learned.
Jose Santiago Pantoja Morales allegedly grabbed Officer Justin Jones&#8217; gun during a struggle last week and shot the 39-year-old officer in the leg before fleeing. Morales was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault of a public servant, while Jones is expected to survive his injuries.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson confirmed to The Daily Wire that Morales is in the country illegally and said the Mexican national told authorities that he last entered the United States by crossing the border near Eagle Pass, Texas, four years ago.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) learned of Morales&#8217; arrest and lodged a detainer with local authorities on Friday, requesting that he be transferred to federal immigration custody following his release from local custody, the spokesperson said.
“The safest way to arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our streets is by lodging arrest detainers,&#8221; the DHS spokesperson told The Daily Wire. &#8220;ICE’s detainer requests are lawful and help safely transfer removable criminal aliens into federal custody.&#8221;
The shooting unfolded Thursday morning after Jones stopped to help Morales while the suspect was walking along a freeway.
Jones was flagged down around 10:39 a.m. by a man who identified himself as Morales&#8217; coworker and said Morales was walking down the freeway, according to CBS News. Jones found Morales walking on the freeway&#8217;s center median before driving him to a nearby Walmart.
Once in the store&#8217;s parking lot, Jones noticed Morales digging through his own work bag and pulling out items, CBS News reported. Jones then exited the vehicle and took one of the items from Morales before pulling him out of the back seat and trying to turn him to face the car.
The two engaged in a struggle on the ground, during which Morales allegedly grabbed Jones&#8217; gun and shot him in the leg, according to CBS News.
Morales fled the scene and was arrested roughly a mile away after allegedly trying to run from officers, according to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth. Officers observed blood on his boots and shirt when they located him.
The suspect admitted to grabbing Jones&#8217; gun and shooting him &#8220;so he could get away,&#8221; the outlet reported.
Morales was charged with aggravated assault of a public servant and is being held on a $500,000 bond.
&#8220;ICE will do everything in its power to detain and remove this criminal illegal alien from the Dallas community following the completion of his criminal proceedings,&#8221; the spokesperson said. “Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, criminal illegal aliens like Morales are not welcome in the United States.”

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents could soon take to the streets equipped with gloves that deliver painful electric shocks to combative arrest targets.
The federal government plans to spend up to $20 million on thousands of &#8220;conductive distraction and de-escalation devices&#8221; by March, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/ice-electric-shock-gloves-85ff746d3e0ee5f39e7a9a3f1f576252" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Associated Press and a Monday Department of Homeland Security (DHS) <a href="https://apfs-cloud.dhs.gov/record/74524/public-print/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">notice</a>.
The technology, known as G.L.O.V.E., or Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, has been used by other law enforcement agencies across the country to control violent suspects inside jails and in the field.
It comes as sources within ICE have described an uptick in violence by the individuals they&#8217;re trying to arrest. Since the Trump administration commenced its mass deportation campaign, ICE agents have faced a 1,300% surge in assaults and a 3,300% increase in vehicular attacks, according to DHS.
One agency source told The Daily Wire the new technology could serve as a useful deterrent during arrests.
&#8220;I think if people knew we had those it would definitely keep people from pushing and getting in our faces,&#8221; the source said.
The company behind the product, Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies LLC, says the gloves are &#8220;not a weapon, but a device used to quickly distract with small uncomfortable electrical pulses&#8221; when making contact with skin.
&#8220;The discomfort associated with the stimulation is usually effective in bringing individuals into compliance in less than three seconds and leaves no burns, marks or scars,&#8221; Compliant Technologies states on its website.
&#8220;The technology is safe as it does not penetrate the subject&#8217;s body; while also allowing other officers to grab the individual being stimulated with no fear of feedback into their bodies. CD3 technology is a great, humane, low-optics, de-escalation solution for many situations facing our men and women in uniform today,&#8221; the company says.
The shocks can&#8217;t pass through clothing, hair, metal, plastic, or fur, according to the company.
Agents must complete a training course before using the gloves and get re-certified to operate them every two years, <a href="https://www.complianttechnologies.net/terms-and-conditions" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Compliant Technologies&#8217; website.
A contract solicitation for the proposed rollout is expected to be published on Friday, according to the DHS notice.

An illegal immigrant released into the country under the Biden administration has been charged with fatally stabbing his roommate with a machete, The Daily Wire has learned.
Edy Rivas Rizo, a 27-year-old Nicaraguan national, allegedly attacked his roommate at a mobile home park in Hallandale Beach, Florida, around 1:15 p.m on August 2, <a href="https://www.local10.com/news/local/2026/08/03/that-guy-just-killed-me-were-victims-last-words-after-fatal-hallandale-beach-stabbing-cops-say/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to Local 10 News. Surveillance video allegedly showed Rivas chasing the victim, stabbing him in the armpit area, and fighting with him on the ground.
A witness told police that moments before the victim collapsed, he pointed toward Rivas and uttered his final words: “That guy just killed me.&#8221;
In a statement shared with The Daily Wire, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said the victim &#8220;would still be alive if it weren’t for the Biden administration releasing him into the country.&#8221;
Rivas illegally crossed the southern border into California in April 2022 and was released into the United States by border agents, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has since lodged a detainer with officials in Broward County to ensure the suspect isn&#8217;t released onto the streets.
&#8220;We will work with our partners in Florida to make sure this killer is removed from our country. Deporting illegal aliens saves lives,&#8221; Mullin said.
Police and surveillance footage showed Rivas and the victim fighting on the ground after the stabbing before two witnesses managed to take the machete away from Rivas. The victim then walked roughly 15 yards before collapsing, according to Local 10 News.
One of the witnesses called 911, and first responders transported the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Police later searched Rivas&#8217; home and found &#8220;a large amount of blood&#8221; as well as the machete wedged between two doors in a storage area, according to the arrest report cited by Local 10 News.
Rivas told law enforcement that the victim had attacked him while he was drinking beer outside with two other men and that he went inside to retrieve the machete because he felt his life was in danger. He claimed that during the ensuing struggle, the victim &#8220;accidentally fell on the blade.&#8221;
The illegal immigrant initially denied chasing the victim, according to police, but changed his account after being shown the surveillance footage. Police said Rivas then admitted chasing the victim but claimed that he intended to strike him with the broad side of the machete rather than its sharp edge.
Authorities arrested Rivas and charged him with first-degree murder. He is being held without bond at the Broward County Main Jail.
ICE lodged the detainer with the jail on August 3, according to DHS.

Federal immigration officers have been seen arresting individuals at the check-in counters and boarding gates and are said to be operating at 15 airports, the outlet <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2026/07/28/us/ice-arrests-airports-visa-overstay.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>, citing documents and interviews with immigration attorneys.
&#8220;This administration is working diligently to ensure that aliens in our country illegally can no longer fly unless it is out of our country to self-deport,&#8221; a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson told The New York Times.
The latest operation builds on a TSA-ICE partnership launched in May 2025 to arrest individuals with outstanding deportation orders at airports, The Times reported.
It also comes as the Trump administration ramps up pressure on ICE to increase arrest numbers, agency sources have recently told The Daily Wire.

ICE arrested Chantal Alejandra Morales Rojas on July 20 while she attempted to board a Southwest Airlines flight from Denver to Oakland, <a href="https://www.9news.com/article/news/latest-news-ott/immigration-judge-grants-bond-woman-ice-dia/73-a462eafa-ef1f-4fc1-af6e-60be892e77ba?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to 9News. The incident was captured on video, appearing to show plainclothes officers intercepting her on the jetway before escorting her away.
All the while, the woman behind the camera was repeatedly calling for &#8220;help&#8221; and crying out &#8220;ICE is here&#8221; and &#8220;f*ck ICE,&#8221; according to the video.
A GoFundMe set up for Morales Rojas said she has a valid work permit and a pending asylum application, 9News reported.
ICE said she entered the United States on October 20, 2024, and that her visa expired on January 4, 2025, according to the outlet. The agency added that having a pending case or work authorization doesn&#8217;t keep ICE from making an arrest.
&#8220;A &#8216;work permit&#8217; and/or a pending asylum case does NOT confer any type of legal status in the United States or prevent ICE from arresting or deporting an illegal alien from the country,&#8221; ICE said.
An immigration judge has since granted bond to Morales Rojas, <a href="https://www.9news.com/article/news/latest-news-ott/immigration-judge-grants-bond-woman-ice-dia/73-a462eafa-ef1f-4fc1-af6e-60be892e77ba" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to 9News.
As a result of the Trump administration&#8217;s latest arrest effort, immigration lawyers say they are instructing their clients awaiting decisions on pending immigration applications to avoid travel.
&#8220;Before, I was saying, ‘As long as you have an ID, you can travel domestically.&#8217; Now I am turning around and saying, ‘If you are in the process of changing status, avoid any travel,'&#8221; Shannon Shepherd, an immigration lawyer who is vice chair for the Chicago chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association, told The Times.

President Donald Trump&#8217;s mass deportation campaign has come for a former Chicago-area teacher accused of helping Tren de Aragua gang members orchestrate a mass shooting.
Venezuelan illegal immigrant Giovanna Mercedes Moreno Occhipinti, 32, allegedly drove two shooters who opened fire during a December 2024 house party in Chicago and helped them evade law enforcement, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Three people were killed in the shooting and several others were wounded.

On Friday, DHS posted a photo of Moreno Occhipinti standing on a tarmac with the caption: &#8220;Bye bye.&#8221; In the photo, the ex-educator was holding a plastic bag and wearing a sweatsuit with a smirk on her face.
Immediately after the shooting, police found multiple weapons inside Moreno Occhipinti&#8217;s car and arrested her on charges of unlawful use of weapons and weapon offense.
The Cook County State&#8217;s Attorney&#8217;s Office, however, declined to proceed with prosecuting the accused, forcing federal authorities to take matters into their own hands.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents nabbed Moreno Occhipinti on May 13.
Matthew Scarpino, Homeland Security Investigations Chicago Special Agent in Charge, called Moreno Occhipinti’s crimes &#8220;calculated and deliberate.&#8221;
Moreno Occhipinti entered the United States in October 2021 under a visa waiver program that allowed her to stay in the country until January 2, 2022, according to DHS. The ex-teacher never left.
The alleged shooters, Ricardo Granadillo Padilla and Edward Martinez Cermeno, were previously deported from the United States, DHS said.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has deported roughly 706,000 illegal immigrants since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, and officials have said the pace of the effort is only picking up steam, according to new data DHS provided to The Daily Wire.
“Bed space and detention centers had to be rebuilt and 10,000 agents hired and Congress wouldn’t pass the big beautiful budget bill for the first six months. Everything is finally in place now so I’m optimistic the numbers will only climb higher from here,” Todd Bensman, who left his role as senior adviser to the ICE Office of the Director last month, recently told The Daily Wire.
In recent days, ICE sources have said they&#8217;re facing renewed pressure to increase arrest numbers.
“It’s wearing everyone out,” said one agency source.
“And at the same time, they want big arrests … but those take time to sit and find and wait. No vehicle stops too, which is harder. So they want big arrests and numbers at the same time. It’s hard to do both, not enough time or days to do it,” the source said.

Trump Deports Illegal Immigrant School Teacher Over Ties To Tren de Aragua Mass Shooting

The Trump administration has now deported over 1,000,000 illegal immigrants from the United States, but roughly a third of those were recent border-crossers who were turned back home, according to new data obtained by The Daily Wire.
The total removals touted by the Trump administration don&#8217;t just include deportations carried out by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), but also account for migrants turned away at the border by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
Since President Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House, ICE has deported roughly 706,000 of the one million total, while CBP has removed around 323,000 others, according to the data provided by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Additionally, the Coast Guard removed roughly 900 illegal immigrants.
Todd Bensman, who recently left his role as senior adviser to the ICE Office of the Director, said he doesn&#8217;t believe Trump administration officials are fully satisfied with the numbers.
&#8220;I don’t think anyone in the administration is thrilled with these numbers over 18 months given that 200,000-plus a month were pouring over the border for four years straight. But people have to remember that Biden left America’s deportation infrastructure in ruins as it retreated,&#8221; Bensman told The Daily Wire.
Still, Bensman, who is now serving as a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, said he&#8217;s optimistic the numbers will shoot up with fewer bureaucratic hurdles in place.

Other former immigration officials who support the president&#8217;s plan say he&#8217;s falling short and that the claim of one million deportations is misleading.
&#8220;People see one big number and think it&#8217;s one operation. It&#8217;s three operations rolled into one. ICE works the interior, CBP works the border, and the Coast Guard works on the water,&#8221; Scott Mechkowski, former ICE New York field office deputy director, said.
Mark Morgan, former acting CBP commissioner, said outright that &#8220;mass deportations are not happening.&#8221;
Morgan and Mechkowski are part of the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-admin-faces-pushback-from-conservative-allies-on-deportation-data?author=Jennie+Taer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=8&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Admin+Faces+Pushback+From+Conservative+Allies+On+Deportation+Data">Oversight Project</a>, a nonprofit group that is advocating for a “mass deportation” and is suing the Trump administration over its failure to respond to outstanding Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for deportation data. The conservative group argues that the Trump administration may have inflated its deportation statistics.
&#8220;Mass deportation is ICE,&#8221; Morgan said, adding that the removals should only account for &#8220;the people that are already in the United States being removed&#8221; and &#8220;not border security.&#8221;
Morgan likened Trump officials&#8217; touting of one million deportations to the Obama administration&#8217;s misleading deportation data strategy.
Under then-President Barack Obama, nicknamed &#8220;the deporter-in-chief,&#8221; deportation figures largely accounted for recent border crossers who were quickly turned back.
Border returns accounted for 70% of all deportations in fiscal year 2013, <a href="https://www.migrationpolicy.org/publication/deportation-and-discretion-reviewing-record-and-options-change?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Migration Policy Institute. In fiscal year 2016, 85% of all <a href="https://www.migrationpolicy.org/journal/policy-beat/obama-record-deportations-deporter-chief-or-not?utm_source=chatgpt.com" target="_blank" rel="noopener">deportations</a> were immediate returns of border crossers.
&#8220;This is exactly what Obama did,&#8221; Morgan said. &#8220;Obama, leading up to the first election, he wanted to appear a little bit tough &#8230; He was combining what ICE and CBP were doing. When somebody comes to the border and they&#8217;re put through voluntary removal, expedited removal, and they&#8217;re not handed over to ICE, that&#8217;s not a deportation.&#8221;
On Friday, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said 1.4 million illegal immigrants have self-deported, either on their own or through the Trump administration&#8217;s CBP Home app, which pays for their trip home and provides a $2,600 &#8220;exit bonus.&#8221; Self-deportations are separate from the data provided by DHS.

An illegal immigrant with a criminal past is accused of killing three people in a hit-and-run crash in Salisbury, North Carolina, on Saturday evening, The Daily Wire has learned.
Javiel Pena Sola, who hails from El Salvador, allegedly struck the victims&#8217; vehicle before attempting to flee the scene, authorities said. A police K-9 unit was able to track Sola down and take him into custody.
Two of the victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while the third succumbed to injuries after being airlifted from the crash site.
Quindel Woods, whose home is near the crash site, described the chilling moment he heard screaming when the crash occurred.
&#8220;They pulled the man out and as they pulled him out, he started screaming,&#8221; Woods said.
Authorities found Sola&#8217;s car in a nearby creek, <a href="https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/started-screaming-more-charges-expected-salisbury-crash-that-killed-3/FS2TVJZQGFGTNKK6TDTF2P7EDI/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to WSOC-TV.
Sola, 42, claimed that he snuck across the Arizona border in 2002, the Department of Homeland Security told The Daily Wire.
The illegal immigrant went on to receive convictions for reckless endangerment, failure to stop after an accident involving damage to attended vehicle, and driving without a license in Maryland in 2015, according to DHS. He also had a prior arrest for escaping from custody.
Authorities in Baltimore handed Sola to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after his jailbreak in March 2016, DHS said. The Obama administration released him from a federal immigration detention center two months later.
The reason for his past release from ICE detention is unclear.
ICE lodged a detainer Wednesday with local authorities in North Carolina, asking them to transfer Sola to federal immigration authorities if he is released from local custody.
“This criminal illegal alien from El Salvador is facing felony charges after a hit-and-run that killed three people in North Carolina,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement Wednesday.
“His criminal history includes prior convictions in 2015 for hit-and-run, reckless endangerment, and driving without a license. Although ICE had arrested him in 2016, the Obama Administration RELEASED him into American communities. These deaths were 100% preventable. Open borders and sanctuary policies have deadly consequences,&#8221; Bis said.
Sola now faces three counts of felony hit-and-run involving serious injury or death. More charges are expected in the case, WSOC-TV reported.
The names of the victims have yet to be released to the public as authorities ensure proper notification to their families.

An illegal immigrant with a rap sheet is accused of murdering an elderly veteran outside his Utah home.
Army and Air Force veteran James Randell “Randy” Witten, 71, was hanging up decorations on his porch in Davis County, Utah, in May when Axel Eduardo Chavez-Marroquin, 24, allegedly drove up and fatally shot him from behind, <a href="https://www.ksl.com/article/51596068/newly-unsealed-charges-say-west-point-veterans-doorbell-camera-recorded-the-murder" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to local news outlet KSL.
The accused &#8220;leapt out of the front passenger seat and moved towards James, firing approximately 10 rounds and killing James from behind,&#8221; KSL reported, citing charging documents. Chavez-Marroquin then returned to his car and sped away.
Police received reports of a car with something orange covering its license plate driving &#8220;erratically&#8221; nearby shortly after the shooting, the local outlet reported. One witness reported seeing a passenger tossing donuts, a beanie, a bandana, and gloves out of the vehicle.

Surveillance footage showed a passenger exiting the vehicle and ripping off the orange tape concealing the license plate before the car headed into Las Vegas hours after the shooting, according to KSL.
Authorities in Nevada located the vehicle on June 16 with Chavez-Marroquin inside and arrested the illegal immigrant. He was transferred to the Davis County Jail in Utah on June 29.
Chavez-Marroquin, who hails from El Salvador, crossed the California border illegally in 2021 before the Biden administration released him into the country, <a href="https://www.dhs.gov/news/2026/07/20/ice-lodges-arrest-detainer-criminal-illegal-alien-arrested-murdering-veteran-utah" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according</a> to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The illegal immigrant received a conviction for domestic violence in Santa Ana, California, in 2024, DHS said. Authorities also arrested him for domestic violence in Laguna Niguel, California, in 2025.
In both cases, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) lodged detainers with authorities in California, who released him from custody under local sanctuary policies, according to DHS.
Chavez-Marroquin arrived in West Point, Utah, from Nevada just eight hours before the shooting and left immediately after carrying out the attack, authorities said.
ICE has lodged a detainer seeking Chavez-Marroquin&#8217;s arrest for the third time following his latest crime, the agency said Monday.
In his latest case, prosecutors have argued that he&#8217;s a flight risk given his ties to El Salvador and his status as a fugitive from California, where he was on probation, according to KSL.
“This monster is charged with murdering a 71-year-old Army and Air Force veteran in Utah. California sanctuary politicians RELEASED this criminal from jail TWICE after arrests for domestic violence. Following his release, he went on to commit this heinous murder,” Assistant Homeland Security Secretary Lauren Bis said in a statement.
“This illegal alien should’ve never been allowed on our streets, and James Witten should still be alive today. ICE is now asking officials in Utah to commit to not releasing this criminal from jail and to work with ICE so that we can remove him from our country. Reckless sanctuary policies in states like California are putting American lives at risk,&#8221; Bis added.
The suspect is charged with murder with a dangerous weapons enhancement, discharge of a firearm causing serious injury, obstruction of justice, and dangerous weapon conduct by a restricted person, according to KSL.

President Donald Trump told ICE to resume vehicle stops after The Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/exclusive-ice-orders-agents-to-cease-all-vehicle-stops-after-recent-shootings?author=Jennie+Taer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=1&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=EXCLUSIVE%3A+ICE+Orders+Agents+To+Cease+All+Vehicle+Stops+After+Recent+Shootings">first reported</a> on Tuesday that the agency paused the practice in the wake of multiple deadly shootings. 
Trump said in a Wednesday morning Truth Social <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/116923585931908111">post</a> that the stops were necessary to implement his mass deportation agenda. He added that giving up the vehicle stops, where many immigration arrests are made, played right into the hands of the “radical Left.” 
“The Open Border Policy of Sleepy Joe Biden allowed 25,000,000 people to pour into our Country, unchecked and unvetted,” the president said. “Many were Criminals, and we have to get them out. In order to do this, we must be strong, tough, and smart, and we CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.’s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP! Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal’s hands.”
Trump then said ICE should continue making vehicle stops and called for more arrests. 
“The Radical Left Dumocrats would like to see this done, but it won’t happen on my watch. I.C.E., be judicious, fair and smart, and go back and do your very important job,&#8221; he said. &#8220;Keep those Crime Stat Records coming! Remember, you are loved and respected in America.&#8221; 
The pause came after shootings involving ICE officers pulling over vehicles during immigration enforcement operations in Texas and Maine. Three Department of Homeland Security sources told The Daily Wire they received a directive stipulating “no more vehicle stops for now.” 
Many ICE officers were upset by the pause because agents prefer to make arrests during traffic stops and not at homes. Arrests in a home require a judicial warrant and can mean the target has more access to weapons.

Trump administration border czar Tom Homan said Tuesday that the pause would be “short term” while more training was done. 
&#8220;I think what they&#8217;re doing is taking the pause to make sure that, number one, the ICE officers have everything they need to stay safe because vehicle attacks are up 3,400%, and they&#8217;re going to make sure, is the training sufficient? Did anything go wrong? I&#8217;m confident they&#8217;re going to get back to their policy of vehicle stops,&#8221; he said during an interview on Fox News. 
The pause was implemented after the shooting in Maine of a 26-year-old Colombian who the Department of Homeland Security said “attempted to flee” and left the officer “fearing for public safety.”

Trump Sounds Off On ICE’s New Traffic Stop Directive

Federal immigration officers across the country have been told to stop pulling over vehicles after recent shootings in Maine and Texas.
Three Homeland Security sources told The Daily Wire Tuesday that they were told &#8220;no more vehicle stops for now.&#8221; The new directive has the potential to massively impact ICE&#8217;s ability to make arrests, as officers often prefer to catch targets during traffic stops rather than at suspects&#8217; homes, where illegal immigrants could have access to weapons. Officers also need a judicial warrant to enter a suspect&#8217;s home without their permission, but no such restriction exists for traffic stops.
&#8220;Numbers are going down, we can&#8217;t do sh*t,&#8221; an agency source fumed.
An ICE spokesperson said the agency is &#8220;always evaluating our procedures to keep our officers safe and criminals off our streets,&#8221; adding that &#8220;We will not disclose or discuss law enforcement tactics.&#8221;
The latest change provides limited exceptions when officers have a criminal warrant, with the agency saying that they must work with outside agencies to pull over the target.
The pause comes a day after a 26-year-old Colombian man was fatally shot by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers as they were trying to pull over his vehicle in Biddeford, Maine.
Maine Sen. Angus King (I-ME) said Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin told him the man who was shot was not the person ICE was trying to arrest, according to CNN. King was walking back a previous statement where he claimed that Mullin said the deceased man was ICE&#8217;s target.
In a statement Monday, ICE said the driver, who was shot and killed, &#8220;attempted to flee&#8221; and that the officer who fired their weapon was &#8220;fearing for public safety.&#8221;
“The driver of the vehicle was struck, and emergency services were immediately contacted. He passed away from his injuries,” ICE said.
Unlike during prior traffic stops-turned-shootings, ICE did not claim that the man shot and killed by officers tried to hit them with his vehicle, and emphasized that the incident is still under investigation. The deceased man&#8217;s identity has yet to be released.
The Biddeford Police Department and the FBI responded to the scene, while DHS&#8217; Office of Inspector General was “notified&#8221; of the incident, ICE said.
“This is a developing situation, and we will update the public when more information is available,” ICE said.
Last Tuesday, an ICE officer in Houston fatally shot Mexican illegal immigrant Lorenzo Salgado Araujo while conducting a vehicle stop. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said Araujo wasn&#8217;t their original target, but claimed that he &#8220;weaponized&#8221; his vehicle and tried to run over an officer, prompting one to fire &#8220;in self-defense.&#8221;
Anti-ICE protesters have taken to the streets in Texas and Maine to express their outrage over the latest shootings. Demonstrators attempted to storm Sen. Susan Collins’ (R-ME) office Monday, shouting “vote her out.”

Minnesota officials recommended a pardon for a child rapist in a failed attempt to shield him from deportation, according to state documents. 
The Minnesota Clemency Review Commission voted 4-2 to recommend a pardon for 42-year-old Laotian national Tou Lue Vang, who was convicted for repeatedly sexually assaulting a girl beginning when she was just 10 years old. Despite its recommendation and a pardon from Governor Tim Walz, Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/marco-rubio-just-dropped-the-hammer-after-tim-walzs-pardon-of-an-illegal-immigrant-child-sex-offender?author=Jennie+Taer&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=0&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Trump+Team+Drops+The+Hammer+After+Tim+Walz%E2%80%99s+Illegal+Alien+Pardon">announced</a> Friday that Vang had been deported. 
Members of the commission claimed Vang had been rehabilitated and pointed to the possibility he would be deported when pushing for a pardon, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/politics/exposed-docs-reveal-why-tim-walz-board-awarded-repeat-child-rapist-pardon-no-future">according</a> to documents reviewed by Fox News. Beginning in 2002, Vang repeatedly had sexual intercourse with a young girl over a two year period starting when he was 18 and she was 10. 
&#8220;Despite the extraordinary severity of the underlying offense, there is substantial evidence of rehabilitation, remorse and acceptance of responsibility,” claimed clemency commissioner and University of Minnesota law professor Perry Moriearty. Moriearty added that Vang &#8220;is facing deportation&#8221; and said that the &#8220;victim supports” the pardon, the documents viewed by Fox News show. 
The Daily Wire reached out to the Minnesota Clemency Review Commission for comment.
When arrested, he claimed it was part of his culture and said the victim should be charged as well. &#8220;I made a mistake, but this is a minor thing. It is a cultural thing in Thailand to marry and have sex with girls as young as 12,” he reportedly told police. 
For the crime, Vang spent just eight months at the Ramsey County, Minnesota, Correctional Workhouse and was given 30 years of supervised probation. The family of the victim pressured her to refuse to cooperate with law enforcement, according to prosecutors. 
Other members of the commission noted that Vang noted his fears of deportation and that he now has a large family. 
&#8220;The applicant stated the need for clemency related to immigration issues,” said commissioner Artika Roller, the executive director of Cornerstone, a <a href="https://cornerstonemn.org/about/leadership/">group</a> that purports to support victims of sexual violence. Roller supported the pardon. 
The Daily Wire also reached out to Cornerstone for comment. 
&#8220;Very tough case but the kids not having a father is not in the best interest of society,&#8221; said commission member and Mounds View Mayor Zach Lindstrom.
&#8220;The victim supports this pardon. His [Vang’s] wife stayed and has forgiven. He also [has] immigration concerns. He has remorse and was discharged from probation,” wrote commissioner Nadine Graves. &#8220;He retracted his prior statement about this being a result of culture. He admits this was wrong then and will always be wrong.&#8221;
Tami McConkey, director of the Victim Witness &amp; Postconviction Justice Division in Ramsey County, urged the commission to not recommend a pardon. 
&#8220;While Mr. Vang expresses shame and regret about what his children experience when then [sic] learn of the offense, he does not share any thoughts or insight about what the victim must have gone through,” she said. 
Walz, Democrat Attorney General Keith Ellison, and Minnesota Supreme Court Chief Justice Natalie Hudson ultimately accepted the recommendation and pardoned Vang.
Vang first came to the United States in 1994 and was given legal status by the Clinton administration, according to the Department of Homeland Security. An immigration judge issued Vang a final deportation order on October 31, 2006, following his conviction.
“Americans must never be forced by their elected leaders to live alongside foreign sex criminals who have no right to begin with to reside in our country,” Rubio said Friday when he announced Vang’s deportation. “This administration will always stand with the American people and defend them from violent criminals.”
