An American intelligence assessment leaked to Axios Sunday claims the communist regime in Cuba is plotting an attack against Guantanamo Bay, American ships, and maybe even Key West, Florida.
The Cuban government has amassed more than 300 drones and has since started discussing using them to attack those sites, <a href="https://www.axios.com/2026/05/17/us-military-drones-cuba">Axios reported</a>, citing the intelligence. Axios did not provide any further specifics on the nature of the intelligence or where it came from.
Momentum toward a U.S. military action in Cuba appears to be surging, with the Axios report serving as the latest piece of the puzzle. Thursday, CIA Director John Ratcliffe traveled to Cuba to warn them against attacking the United States, and told government officials that they must abandon their authoritarian system to receive sanctions relief.

The legal tactic mirrors that which was used against deposed Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, who the U.S. captured in January after indicting him for his role in narcotics trafficking.
U.S. officials say Cuba has been amassing drones for several years from Russia and Iran, with an increased number coming from Russia in the last month. An estimated 5,000 Cuban soldiers have fought for Russia in its invasion of Ukraine, with the Russian government paying Cuba a reported $25,000 per soldier. An official told Axios that the U.S. had intercepted communications that indicate the Cubans are trying to learn from Iran&#8217;s tactics in their ongoing war with the United States.
&#8220;When we think about those types of technologies being that close, and a range of bad actors from terror groups to drug cartels to Iranians to the Russians, it&#8217;s concerning,&#8221; a U.S. official told Axios.

January 20, 2009. That was the day Barack Obama was sworn into office as the 44th President of the United States.
When I got home from school, my family was gathered in the living room, and like millions of other homes across the country, our television was turned up to its highest volume. I was defeated, having lost every Facebook argument in defense of John McCain, but in reality, I didn’t care. What could go wrong anyway? We’re in America, for crying out loud — this is the greatest country on earth. We had just elected the first black president in the country’s history, and it seemed to make most of my friends happy.
My grandparents, far smarter than I, watched in anguish. My Abuelo Ernesto was tapping his foot uncontrollably, and my Abuela Norma had one tear lightly streaming down her face. Then she leaned over to me and said something I will never forget: “That sounds exactly like Fidel Castro.”
I thought she was absolutely insane. To me, the comparison was absurd. I assumed their experiences had made them overly sensitive to anything that even remotely resembled the rhetoric they had once heard in La Havana. This was America. America had institutions. America had a Constitution. America had safeguards that made something like Castro’s revolution impossible.
I would eventually realize just how right they were. But to understand why my grandparents reacted the way they did, we need to backtrack.
Both sides of my family escaped Cuba in the 1960s as Castro consolidated power and transformed the island into the Western Hemisphere’s first communist regime. They left before the system fully tightened its grip, but not before they saw the warning signs.
For them, it happened all at once. One day, nearly every newspaper and radio station parroted the same narrative. Russian influence began appearing all over the island — even on television — where the Soviets were suddenly portrayed as heroes rather than adversaries. Oh, and the Americans — their northern neighbors just 90 miles off the coast of Florida, who were, until Castro’s rise, Cuba’s dominant trading partner? Evil, greedy, capitalist pigs.
At school, children were encouraged to report their parents if they owned a gun or spoke critically of the government. Friends and families were torn apart over political differences, private farmland was ripped from their owners, and the universities were completely taken over by Marxism as propaganda ran rampant through the island.
Meanwhile, <a href="https://youtu.be/VDr3CwXJXd8?si=GyWCRmJnKokZF85Q&amp;t=777" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Castro denied</a> that his revolution had anything to do with Marxism. Instead, he warned Cubans that the real threat was capitalism — that the real threat was America.
Obviously, history has proven otherwise.
According to the <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2026/05/07/10-facts-about-cubans-in-the-u-s/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pew Research Center</a>, a quarter of a million Cubans arrived in the United States in the 1960s following the revolution, with another quarter million arriving in the 1970s. As of 2024, there were 2.9 million people of Cuban origin in the U.S. — 23% more than in 2019, a reality that cuts through any romanticized narrative. People don’t fling themselves on rafts in the middle of the night, leaving their families and lives behind, to escape a purportedly prosperous and egalitarian society.
My Abuela Norma arrived in Miami with just $2 in her pocket and a small box of cigars, leaving her husband and eight-month-old baby on the island. She sold the cigars so she could afford a bus ticket to apply for a job. My Abuelo Ernesto had been an accountant in Cuba. In the United States, he started over by cleaning toilets and bussing tables as a janitor. My Abuelo Hernan escaped to Spain to follow his dreams of becoming a doctor, with Abuela Zoraida by his side, hauling their children and leaving everything behind.
When I heard these stories as a little girl, they were never imparted to me with bitterness — they were told and retold with gratitude. My upbringing in Miami filled me with stories of sacrifice, faith, and resilience. In my house, America was never something to apologize for. It was the country that gave my family the opportunity to rebuild everything they had lost. That perspective stayed with me even after I left Miami.
Many Americans travel to Cuba today and see it as a kind of frozen museum: vintage cars, crumbling buildings, and colorful streets perfect for an Instagram feed. What they often don’t realize is that Cuba once looked very different. Before Castro, it was one of the most advanced societies in Latin America. It was the first country in Latin America to implement a railroad system, broadcast television in color, and have centralized air conditioning in a hotel.
Now, in America, I turn on the news and hear the same slogans that I was raised to fear.
I hear politicians speak about “equity” in ways that sound less like opportunity and more like coercion. I hear capitalism blamed as the root of all injustice, as though the very system that lifted millions out of poverty is something to be dismantled rather than improved. I hear America described not as a force for good, but as something inherently oppressive — something to be apologized for, rewritten, even torn down.
And I think back to my grandparents, sitting on that couch in 2009, recognizing something I could not.
At the time, I dismissed their reaction as fear rooted in trauma. But history has a way of repeating itself — not always in identical form, but in familiar patterns. Revolutions rarely announce themselves as such. They don’t begin with declarations of tyranny. They begin with promises: fairness, justice, equality. They begin by identifying a villain — usually wealth, success, or an entire economic system — and convincing people that their suffering can be traced back to it.
Fidel Castro didn’t seize power by openly declaring, “I will install a communist regime.” He spoke of helping the poor. He spoke of justice. He spoke of dignity.
Today, in cities like New York, we hear voices like Zohran Mamdani echo similar themes — framing capitalism as exploitation, portraying America as fundamentally unjust, and offering sweeping government control as the solution. The language is modernized, the tone more polished, but the underlying premise is strikingly familiar: that the system itself must be torn down in order to achieve fairness. Ideas do not always need a violent revolution to take hold.
There’s a reason why The Daily Wire fights so hard against both big government censorship and the onslaught of Leftist propaganda in our culture. I take great pride in being able to contribute to that fight each day. 
But as Daily Wire founder Ben Shapiro recently pointed out in a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJb5aEJ8FA0" target="_blank" rel="noopener">speech</a> at the University of Austin, there’s a reason why young people are taught to see their country primarily through the lens of its flaws — when success is reframed as oppression and economic freedom is recast as evil, the foundations of our country begin to shift.
In Cuba, my grandparents watched as universities became centers of Marxist thought and as dissent became dangerous. It didn’t happen overnight. It happened step by step, justified at every stage by appeals to fairness and progress.
That is why their reaction in 2009 was not irrational — it was informed.
They had seen how language can be used to reframe reality, how patriotism can be turned into suspicion, and how economic systems can be dismantled under the guise of compassion.
And they had lived the consequences.
I’m not saying America is on the brink of becoming Cuba. But no nation is immune to the influence of ideas — especially when those ideas are presented in ways that sound virtuous on the surface.
Socialism does not arrive all at once. It seeps in through rhetoric that reshapes how people think about success, fairness, and their own country. It gains ground when people forget history, or worse, when they are never taught it at all.
In 2009, my grandparents did not have the luxury of ignoring those warning signs. They recognized them because they had lived them.
As I listen to the conversations happening in America today, I find myself hearing the echoes I had once dismissed. And this time, I’m the one sounding the alarm.

The Department of Justice plans to indict Raúl Castro, the 94-year-old former president of Cuba, as tensions escalate between the United States and the communist country.
The indictment is expected to charge Castro over a 1996 incident when Cuba shot down American-operated humanitarian planes, sources <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/us-moving-to-indict-cubas-raul-castro-officials-say/">told</a> CBS News. Castro, the brother of the late Cuban communist revolutionary Fidel Castro, stepped down as the leader of Cuba in 2021, but he remains one of the most powerful figures in the country.
The Justice Department did not immediately respond to The Daily Wire’s request for comment. 
In February 1996, two small planes operated by Miami-based group Brothers to the Rescue, were shot down by a Cuban fighter jet. The planes, which carried four people searching for Cubans attempting to flee the communist country, were reportedly shot down outside of Cuban airspace. Four people were killed.
On Thursday, the CIA also released images of Director John Ratcliffe during what appear to be face-to-face negotiations with leadership in Havana on Thursday.

The Trump administration is pressuring Cuba as the communist nation experiences energy shortages after oil shipments were cut off from Venezuela. Cuba&#8217;s already bleak energy crisis worsened after the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro in early January and took control of Venezuelan oil sales. Venezuela, which shipped oil to American adversaries around the globe, had previously been Cuba&#8217;s main oil exporter.  
Maduro was captured by U.S. forces in a midnight raid on his compound after he was hit with multiple charges in the United States, including narco-terrorism.
CIA Director John Ratcliffe told Raúl Castro earlier this month that President Trump is &#8220;prepared to seriously engage on economic and security issues, but only if Cuba makes fundamental changes.” President Trump argues that Cuba has developed close relationships with United States adversaries including China, Russia, and Iran. Trump also says that Cuba has provide refuge for American enemies, creating a national security risk. 
Trump has publicly floated regime change and other aggressive actions toward Cuba. <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/51-prisoners-to-be-freed-as-cuba-shows-cracks-under-trump-pressure">In March</a>, he suggested the United States could pursue what he described as a “friendly takeover.”
“It may be a friendly takeover,” Trump said. “They’re really in, they’re down to, uh, as they say, fumes. They have no energy. They have no money. They’re in deep trouble on a humanitarian basis.”

Independent journalist Nick Shirley recently traveled to Cuba, where he looked into the ongoing food and energy crisis on the island and asked residents about living under a communist regime.
Shirley, who gained nationwide recognition for his reporting on suspected fraud schemes in Minneapolis, was in Cuba for 24 hours earlier this month as the country faces an oil shortage and mounting pressure from the Trump administration.
In one interview, Shirley asked a Cuban man to share his opinion on communism.
&#8220;The worst thing to exist in life!&#8221; he said. &#8220;The worst thing to exist in life is communism because, in reality, none of them are communist. They get rich and exploit the people.&#8221;
He argued that the equality promised under communism &#8220;doesn&#8217;t exist.&#8221;
&#8220;They are the ones with everything,&#8221; he added, referring to Cuba&#8217;s communist leaders. &#8220;They have electricity, they have the nicest cars, they have oil, they have gas, they have everything. And the people have nothing. And the majority of the companies are theirs.&#8221;
The oil shortage has forced Cuba into island-wide blackouts, disrupting essential services, including hospitals and public transportation. Many Cubans are also forced to wait in long lines for food handed out by the government, which is typically imported.
&#8220;How can you live off a ration book that gets you three pounds of sugar and one pound of salt?&#8221; the Cuban man told Shirley. &#8220;Each year, they give you a chicken and eggs. Eggs haven&#8217;t arrived in a year. It&#8217;s been a year since I had an egg.&#8221;
Asked why some people in Cuba continue to defend the country&#8217;s communist system and government, the man replied, &#8220;The only ones who defend communism are with the Castro family, or someone who&#8217;s afraid of them, or someone who lives off the government — who gets rich from the dictatorship.&#8221;
He then urged Americans to reject socialism and communism.
&#8220;The worst thing that can happen in life is socialism and communism because it&#8217;s the great lie,&#8221; the Cuban man said. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t exist. It just leads you to misery, harassment, hunger, and anguish.&#8221;
&#8220;Donald Trump and Marco Rubio, I am waiting for you guys, please, to see if we can live like people, to live like a human being,&#8221; he added.

Shirley later claimed he was tracked by undercover government agents and a Cuban general while in Havana and said he had to plan his own escape from the country &#8220;to avoid being taken hostage.&#8221;

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth publicly declared Tuesday that the Cuban regime poses a national security threat to the United States. The striking statement came during a House budget hearing as tensions between Washington and Havana continue to rise.
During a hearing on the administration’s proposed 2027 defense budget, Rep. Mario Díaz-Balart (R-FL) pressed Hegseth on Cuba’s ties to hostile foreign powers and its long history of antagonism toward the United States.
“Considering all those issues and others that we could talk about in a classified setting, do you believe that the Cuban regime possesses a national security threat to the United States?” Díaz-Balart asked.
“I do,” Hegseth responded.

Before that exchange, Díaz-Balart laid out a series of accusations against the communist government, asking Hegseth to confirm each one in turn. “Is it true that the Cuban regime actually shot down two American airplanes in international airspace, murdering Americans?” the Florida congressman asked, referencing the 1996 Brothers to the Rescue incident.
“I don’t — I can’t recall the precise year, but I believe that is the case,” Hegseth replied.
Díaz-Balart then turned to Cuba’s growing relationships with America’s geopolitical rivals.
“Is it true that Russian spy ships and warships, including the nuclear sub Kazan, have repeatedly used Cuban ports?”
“That is true, Congressman,” Hegseth said.
The congressman also referenced renewed concern over the Russian signals intelligence site at Lourdes and alleged Chinese intelligence activity on the island.
“And is it also true that now the Chinese also are there?” Díaz-Balart asked.
“I wouldn’t want to reveal anything that should be classified, but we don’t want foreign adversaries attempting to use that island,” Hegseth answered.
The exchange comes as the Trump administration has sharply increased pressure on communist governments in the Western Hemisphere during his second term, leading to the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro. Cuba has long been accused by U.S. officials of <a href="https://www.thefp.com/p/how-cuba-propped-up-maduro">propping up Caracas</a> through intelligence support and military advisers, and Hegseth acknowledged that role during the hearing.
“I am well aware that Cubans have been around the globe to include attempting to defend Maduro in Venezuela,” Hegseth said. “That is something they’ve done for a long time.”
While the Pentagon has announced no direct military action against Cuba, Hegseth’s remarks are among the clearest public acknowledgments yet that the administration views the island’s regime not merely as a hostile government, but as an active strategic threat close to American shores.

The FBI returned a 10-year-old Utah boy to his mother after he was kidnapped and taken to Cuba by his transgender-identifying father and his family feared the child would undergo transgender procedures, the Justice Department announced Tuesday. 
Authorities charged 42-year-old Inessa-Ethington, who goes by &#8220;Rose,&#8221; and 32-year-old &#8220;Blue&#8221; Inessa-Ethington with international parental kidnapping after the gender-confused boy was taken to Cuba. The boy has since been safely returned to his mother.
The child, a boy who identifies as a girl, split time with his divorced parents, who share custody in Cache County, Utah. The boy was supposed to go on a camping trip to Canada with his father — a man who identifies as a woman — and his partner, Blue, but instead ended up in Cuba, according to court documents. 
Family members told authorities they feared the boy&#8217;s father, Rose, intended to force his son to undergo transgender surgery abroad against the mother&#8217;s wishes. They feared the boy &#8220;was transported to Cuba for gender reassignment surgery prior to puberty,” according to a criminal complaint. 
The two kidnappers were <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-ut/pr/utah-10-year-old-reunited-biological-mother-after-transgender-parent-and-partner">deported</a> from Cuba on Monday, and the child was returned home safe to Utah. 
FBI Director Kash Patel told The Daily Wire the rescue was another example of the bureau protecting children. 
“Each and every day this FBI is stepping up to protect kids in America at levels never seen before — identifying and rescuing 6200 child victims just last year alone,” he said. “This case is no different. We are proud of our agents, Intel analysts, and partners who acted quickly and saved a young child from what could have been a horrific kidnapping. Let it be a message to any criminal actor who would try the same — this FBI will find you, no matter where you try to hide.”
Court documents say the group left Utah on March 28, 2026, telling the boy&#8217;s mother they were heading to Alberta, Canada.  The child later called and said they had arrived, but the group could not be reached afterward. 
On March 29, the group crossed into British Columbia at the Douglas Port of Entry, then flew to Mexico the same day before arriving in Havana, Cuba, on April 1, 2026, according to investigators. 
A search of the pair’s residence found a to-do list that included “learn Spanish,” along with travel plans, an intent to withdraw $10,000 in cash, and indications they planned to empty a bank account, according to the FBI. 
“Recovered notes include instruction from a mental health therapist located in Washington D.C. including instruction to send the therapist the $10,000.00 and instructions on gender affirming medical care for children,” the criminal complaint says. 
On April 13, a Utah judge granted the boy&#8217;s mother full custody of the boy and ordered him returned to her. Rose and Blue were located by Cuban authorities on April 16, according to the Justice Department. 
Lawyers for the defendants have not been identified. They appeared in court for an arraignment in Virginia and will be transferred to Utah for further proceedings.

You know, I’m old enough to remember a kinder, gentler America, with safe suburban streets of well-kept houses where a kid could go out on his bike after school and not return until sunset around six years later after which he would just sit silently in a corner of the house staring into the middle distance and occasionally pulling the legs off a spider or a mouse or maybe his kid sister while dreaming of the day he’d be free to hunt and kill at will… or maybe that was just me.
But in any case, today’s America is so hostile and so divided, that I just wish we could find a way to build bridges of communication and even friendship between conservatives and the flaming dirtbags trying to destroy everything that good people hold dear.
It’s not that all progressives are sinister Communist authoritarian perverts looking to bring the nation to its knees by allying themselves with Islamist terrorists and illegal immigrant gangsters in order to reduce our civilization to ashes then seize power in the ensuing chaos so they can enchain us in yet another of their drab utopias where everyone is equally miserable except for the small cadre of bitter lowlifes who derive some small pleasure from imposing their own unhappiness on everyone else — well, okay it is that, but it’s also the smug look on the faces of these schmucks that just makes you want to squeeze their noses between the knuckles of your first two fingers and twist them like Moe used to do to Curly on “The Three Stooges,” except not playing around this time.
But as Christians, we have to remember that Jesus told us to love our enemies and, sure, a lot of good that did him, but still, it’s up to us to try to understand those of our fellow citizens whose deeply-held principles lead them to oppose anything that even smells remotely like common decency.

For instance, take Ilhan Omar. Here’s a woman who escaped the violence of civil war in the primitive hellhole called Somalia, an African word that means “please get me out of this primitive hellhole.” By the grace of a loving God who clearly just wasn’t paying attention that day, Omar’s family was granted asylum here in the United States, where she then rose to become a congresswoman in the corruption-riddled filth-pit of Minnesota, an Indian word that means, “Please get me out of this corruption-riddled filth-pit.”
Surely, such a woman must feel deep gratitude to a country so welcoming and generous and self-destructive.
And yet the other day, Congresswoman Omar said she was “incredibly proud” of her daughter Isra for traveling with other assorted snot-faced idiots to the Communist cesspool called Cuba, a Spanish word meaning, “Please get me out of this Communist cesspool.” The luxurious Cuban junket was intended, Omar said, to show solidarity with Cuba against the United States because the U.S. is cruelly attempting to free the Cubans from Communist cess-poolery. Omar went on to call her daughter a “brilliant young leader,” presumably referring to Isra’s arrest for demonstrating at Columbia University in support of the Iranian-funded rapist-murderers called Hamas, and also to the t-shirt Isra wore to Cuba celebrating the George Floyd-inspired burning of Minneapolis, an Indian word that means, “Please get me out of Minneapolis.”
So, in an attempt to build bridges of friendship with the congresswoman, I wrote her a polite email, saying, “Dear Communist terrorist witch-demon, shouldn’t you show more gratitude to the country that rescued you from a hellhole and elected you to Congress in a filth-pit?”
To give credit where credit is due, Congresswoman Omar did reply promptly, writing, “Your Islamophobia is not who we are as Americans. Who we are as Americans are people who allow a Somalian grifter to play us for suckers while she’s simultaneously plotting to crush us under the iron heel of Islamist Communism. That’s who we are as Americans, if by ‘we’ I mean you.”
So there it is, my friends, we really can learn to communicate with those on the other side of the political aisle. Just remember to wear a steel-tipped boot and aim for the ass.

In the humid outskirts of Havana, I felt like I’d drifted into a sepia-tinted parallel timeline.
“A ‘Fidel’.”
My laughter wasn’t forthcoming. Not that it wasn’t funny. I was paralyzed by the surrealism. It was the last week of six decades of Castro rule and the final week of Raúl Castro’s presidency, yet here I was with his granddaughter Gabriella. And her boyfriend was selling me drugs.
Hadn’t her grandparents put people to death for selling drugs? Yes. Four high-ranking officials were executed by firing squad in 1989 for drug-smuggling. Despite this, her presence gave me an odd sense of safety. Some farm animals are more equal than others. And these, surely, were the most equal of all.
“And half a gram?”
He eyed me.
“…a ‘Raul’.”
Try as they might, Marxists can’t escape hierarchies. I wondered if they’d caught the irony. At least this one had a sense of humor. I turned to see if Gabriella was amused. The Castro name is quite a burden to carry. New World nobility. Her face remained stoic as a Castilian queen. She was more interested in the music.
If this was their way of welcoming me to their country, they went overboard with the midnight Lada racing through the capital. Cuba’s cocaine communists really put North London’s champagne socialists to shame.
Speaking of which, in the latest season of Radical Chic, eight years on from the Castros, a flotilla of useful halfwits has arrived.
From England comes cardigan-commie Jeremy Corbyn, Labour backbencher Richard Burgon, and YouTuber Owen Jones. Influencer Hasan Piker swapped Hollywood for Havana, wearing glasses worth $1,380 and a $690 T-shirt. “We have just been living la vida loca … Just peppering people with wads of cash,” he humbly divulged to the press — oblivious to what this revealed about which society better delivers material prosperity.
He was joined by fellow Americans Christian Smalls, the former Amazon unionist, the women-led anti-war group CODEPINK, and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar’s daughter Isra Hirsi. Isra proudly following in her mother’s footsteps by siding with the enemies of the nation that so warmly welcomed her family from Somalia.
They are all part of the Nuestra América Convoy, which arrived in Havana this week. The delegation brought together over 650 people from 33 countries and 120 organizations, delivering roughly 20 tons of humanitarian aid. What a hoot. I only hope their phones have enough battery to capture selfies when they hear ordinary Cubans chanting “Down with communism!” through the blackouts.
And that is exactly what Cubans have been chanting in Morón, outside the local headquarters of the Communist Party of Cuba. But the Nuestra América Convoy is not there to protest decades of brutal dictatorship, but rather the US “blockade,” recently reinforced by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
On 29 January, the United States issued Executive Order 14380, titled “Addressing Threats to the United States by the Government of Cuba.” In it, President Trump declared that the situation with respect to Cuba “constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat” and announced a national emergency.
The real question is how long it will take Corbyn &amp; Co to realise they are on the side of Cuba’s dictatorial regime. After all, none of them have uttered a word about the lack of democracy in a country where only Communist Party members may hold office.
Not a peep about the breadlines — which I have witnessed on every one of my trips to Cuba over the last twenty years, both during and since the Castro era. Breadlines in Santiago de Cuba. Breadlines in Trinidad. Breadlines in Havana.
While there have been <a href="https://x.com/FoxNews/status/2036521369492725871?s=20">interesting reports</a> about how the Radical Chic Flotilla was funded by the US-born self-described Marxist billionaire Neville Roy Singham, the root of this idiocy was perhaps best articulated by the Irish rap band Kneecap.
If the Black Panthers had Leonard Bernstein, what does it say about the Nuestra América Convoy that their house band are Kneecap? The Belfast hip-hop trio is most famous for its vocal support of Hamas and Hezbollah — and the resulting terrorism charges against one member. On a Havana boulevard, they dish out their Radical Chic <a href="https://x.com/ultras_antifaa/status/2035502703804080378?s=20">insights to the press</a>.
Móglaí Bap, Kneecap’s rapper, has things to get off his chest: “I can’t remember the last time Cuba invaded a country.” Bless his cotton socks. They have. Panama and the Dominican Republic (1959), Algeria (1963–64), Congo (1965–67), Guinea-Bissau (1966–74), Angola (1975–91), Ethiopia (1977–89), Syria (1973–83), Mozambique (1975–80s), South Yemen (1970s–80s), Nicaragua (1979–90s), and Grenada (1979–83).
But it’s not just stupidity that motivates Kneecap. “They wanna isolate all these countries and make them feel like they have no support … and then when that happens, that’s when imperialism takes over.” Here Bap gets to the heart of it.
Anti-imperialism. It is the same blind ideology that has these rappers supporting the forces of evil wherever they emerge: Gaza, Tehran, Caracas. But it could not be more fitting than here in communist Cuba, for it is the central pillar of Castroism.
“I propose the immediate launching of a nuclear strike on the United States. The Cuban people are prepared to sacrifice themselves for the cause of the destruction of imperialism and the victory of world revolution.”
So said Fidel Castro in a telegram to Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev on 26 October 1962, at the height of the Cuban Missile Crisis. <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/1992/10/23/opinion/castro-wanted-a-nuclear-strike.html">According to Fedor Burlatsky</a> — a member of Khrushchev’s inner circle — this was the real turning point. So shocked was Khrushchev by Castro’s brazen desire for national suicide that the Soviet leader immediately changed tack and sought a resolution with President Kennedy. Imagine an ideological derangement so potent it makes Soviets blush.
Today, despite the cries for “libertad!” from Cubans downtrodden by six decades of this anti-imperialist experiment, the ideology is thriving — not in Cuba, but in the coffee shops of Islington, the vegan restaurants of Beverly Hills, and the congressional district offices of Minnesota. Anti-imperialism is the ultimate luxury belief.
My last interaction with Gabriella Castro came as we stepped out of the car after racing around Havana. She’d made it clear she was staunchly anti-American, but I thought I’d poke a bit further.
“How does one say ‘friends’ in Spanish?” I asked, knowing the answer but pretending otherwise.
“Amigos.”
“But what if it’s male and female?”
“Amigos.”
“It’s still masculine?”
“Sí.”
“Isn’t that a little…”
“Sexist. Yes…”
She paused, looking seriously into the distance.
“…we should change it.”

The communist dictatorship in Cuba has never been closer to collapse. Thankfully, the cadre of leftist American activists and influencers that descended on Havana this week will not be able to save it. While the island endured its second total electrical grid collapse in a matter of days, the regime welcomed a delegation of limousine socialists from the United States. They quickly pulled out their phones, merging grotesque voyeuristic <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/22/world-news/champagne-socialists-in-cuba-stage-concert-stay-in-5-star-hotel-as-country-plunges-into-nationwide-blackout/">slum tourism</a> with propagandistic livestreams from their five-star, regime-owned hotel. As their diesel generators hummed, the rest of the country starved in the dark.
The good news? This is late-stage communism. Cuba’s 67-year-old experiment with Marxist ideology could finally end if the Trump administration avoids the traps of negotiation and holds the line on its successful oil embargo. It would be a historic accomplishment for Trump 2.0, and petroleum is the key.
Margaret Thatcher famously observed that the problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money. This is happening in real time in present-day Cuba: The government has run out of other people’s oil. It scraped by for decades on Venezuelan crude shipments, using Venezuela&#8217;s oil imports to generate electricity, which is the least efficient task imaginable. This imported crude is in addition to the 25,000 barrels of oil per day that the regime pumps for itself.
The ouster of Nicolás Maduro and President Trump’s total oil embargo have set a countdown clock for the regime. The punishment will continue; the power outages will get worse. What’s more, they presage a breakdown in the paltry benefits the regime still offers.
Decades ago, Bernie Sanders <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ad-v0qpB3A&amp;t=22s">infamously claimed</a> that bread lines were “a good thing” because they meant that the poor were not starving. Eventually, he argued, people received bread. The 2026 energy shortage in Cuba has given that interpretation a new, grim twist. Limited gasoline for transportation and power for baking means that there will be less bread for the bread lines.
As President Trump recently noted, “They have no energy. They have no money. They’re in deep trouble.” Trump is correct.
Deputy Cuban Foreign Minister Fernández de Cossío declared that the oil blockade “cannot be sustained forever.” The regime is obviously betting that the White House will eventually cave and let foreign tankers arrive in Cuban ports. This should not happen, since it will extend the lifespan of this regime once more.
Conditions on the ground are ripe for public unrest not seen since Cuba’s nationwide protests in July 2021. Unlike the previous unrest due to blackouts, however, the regime no longer has a Venezuelan patron to bail them out. Their current strategy is to play for time.
Here’s what we do next:
The administration must hold the line on the current oil embargo. The Cuban regime has learned how to manipulate public opinion by claiming that an end to the U.S. embargo will end the poverty of the Cuban people. In reality, it is the regime’s communist economic policies that have made them poor. It is why the <a href="https://x.com/TheCCShowcast/status/2035796964529365458?s=20">cavalcade of socialist influencers has backfired</a> on the government.
By showcasing the desperate poverty of the Cuban people and retreating to their hotel rooms to broadcast their support for the regime from a swanky 42-story high-rise, the woke circus of the “Stop the Siege” campaign inadvertently showed the disconnect between the luxury of communist elites and the people they imprison.
Next, the administration should not accept the “Venezuelan model” for Cuba. Simply replacing a few leaders at the top will not cure the island’s woes.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio seems to understand this, recently declaring that Cuba’s current leaders “can’t fix it,” namely, the economy. This is accurate. It is also why asking for a change in management at the top will not work.
Cuba needs a fundamental restructuring, similar to Central Europe after 1989.
As we learned from successful post-communist countries in Europe, gradual reforms lead to corruption and take too long to yield the desired results. Conversely, rapid changes shock the system into embracing free-market mechanisms that have not existed for decades. Poland and the Czech Republic are the shining examples of this rapid teardown and rebuilding.
Lastly, President Trump can and should do more to use the bully pulpit of his presidency to encourage the Cuban people. Ultimately, they cannot be “given” freedom; they must use the regime&#8217;s weakness to seize their own national destiny. Trump has the loudest megaphone in the world; he should use it to remind everyday Cubans that America is waiting to make the island rich through trade, investment, and most importantly, energy.
Because none of this can happen while the current regime remains in power, the White House should fully embrace a straightforward idea: “Viva Cuba libre.”

Cuba is preparing for the possibility of military conflict with the United States, a top Cuban official warned Sunday, as tensions between the two countries continue to escalate.
“Our military is always prepared, and in fact it is preparing these days for the possibility of military aggression,” Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío said in an interview on &#8220;<a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/cuban-deputy-fm-reacts-to-trump-s-threats-to-take-over-cuba-full-interview-259825733583?utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm">Meet the Press</a>.&#8221; “We would be naïve” not to consider the possibility, he added, while insisting that Havana “truly hope[s] that it doesn’t occur” and sees “no justification whatsoever” for conflict.
The warning comes after a <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-says-he-can-take-cuba-i-could-do-anything-i-want-with-it">series of statements</a> from President Donald Trump as his administration ramps up pressure on the island’s communist government. He said he would have the “honor” of “taking Cuba in some form … Free it. Take it. I think I could do anything I want with it.” Secretary of State Marco Rubio has <a href="https://thehill.com/policy/international/5787874-cuba-political-change-rubio/">also signaled</a> that Cuba’s leadership is in a precarious position, warning that those in power “don’t know how to fix” the country’s mounting crises.
Fernández de Cossío dismissed those remarks, insisting that regime change is “absolutely” not up for discussion. “The Cuban political system is not up for negotiation,” he said. “Cuba is a sovereign country … and would not accept becoming a dependent state of any other power.”
The standoff comes as Cuba faces a severe and worsening economic crisis, driven in large part by an energy shortage that has crippled the island. The Trump administration has moved to choke off fuel supplies by threatening penalties on countries that export oil to Cuba, a policy Cuban officials describe as a “very severe” blockade.
“What’s happening today is that the U.S. is threatening … any country that might export fuel to Cuba,” Fernández de Cossío said, arguing the pressure campaign “cannot be sustained forever.”
However, Cuba has already experienced repeated <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/anti-government-riot-breaks-out-in-cuba-over-blackouts?author=Reuters&amp;category=News&amp;elementPosition=undefined&amp;row=0&amp;rowType=Vertical+List&amp;title=Anti-Government+Riot+Breaks+Out+In+Cuba+Over+Blackouts">nationwide blackouts</a> in recent weeks, including multiple grid collapses that left much of the island without electricity. With limited fuel, transportation, hospitals, and food distribution systems have all come under strain.
Tensions have also intensified following a U.S. military operation earlier this year that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro, a key ally of the Cuban regime.
The loss of Venezuelan oil shipments, long a lifeline for Cuba’s economy, has compounded the island’s crisis and further strained relations with Washington.
Despite the rhetoric, both sides have acknowledged ongoing communication. Fernández de Cossío confirmed that Cuban and U.S. officials remain in dialogue on certain bilateral issues, though he stressed that core political questions such as leadership and single-party governance are off the table.
“No sovereign country negotiates its internal political system,” he said. Cuban officials have rejected calls for political reform, with Fernández de Cossío criticizing the U.S. system in return, noting that America itself operates under a two-party structure.
While Cuban officials emphasized readiness, they also sought to downplay the likelihood of imminent conflict. “Our country has historically been ready to mobilize … for military aggression,” Fernández de Cossío said. “We truly always see it as something far from us. We don’t believe it is something that is probable.” Still, he reiterated that failing to prepare would be a mistake given current global tensions.
The warnings come as Cuba faces one of the most precarious moments in decades: economic collapse, widespread blackouts, and growing public frustration. At the same time, the regime continues to reject any discussion of structural political change, even as pressure mounts from both abroad and within the island. For now, Havana is signaling two things at once: it wants to avoid war, but is preparing for it anyway.

Cuba Prepares For Possible U.S. Military Action As Tensions Surge

Cuba said it had begun efforts early on Sunday to restore power after its grid collapsed for the second time in a week amid a U.S. oil blockade that has dealt a major blow to the island&#8217;s already ailing energy infrastructure.
The grid collapsed Saturday evening at 6:32 p.m. (2232 GMT) after a major power plant in Nuevitas, in eastern Cuba&#8217;s Camaguey province, failed and went offline, grid operator UNE said, causing a cascade effect that knocked out power to the nation&#8217;s approximately 10 million people.
Cuba&#8217;s energy and mines ministry said early on Sunday it had established microsystems &#8211; smaller, closed circuits &#8211; in all of the island&#8217;s provinces to restore power for vital services like hospitals, water supply and food distribution.
The country&#8217;s two gas-fired power plants, operated by Energas, were running in Varadero and Boca de Jaruco, and electricity had reached the nearby Santa Cruz oil-fired plant, the energy ministry said on social media.
Shortly after sunrise on Sunday, the streets of the capital Havana were crowded with early risers sitting on doorsteps, lamenting the situation with neighbors and swatting mosquitoes in cool weather under clear skies.
&#8220;Life doesn&#8217;t change. We&#8217;re stuck in the same rut,&#8221; said Havana resident Leoni Alberto, who said he was forced to cook with firewood at least twice a week due to the outages. &#8220;It&#8217;s absolute madness. There&#8217;s no other way around it.&#8221;
Cellular service and internet was almost entirely unavailable in most areas, leaving many without communication of any kind.
Cuban prime minister Manuel Marrero said the recovery effort was taking place under &#8220;very complex circumstances.&#8221;
Cuba&#8217;s electrical grid has been teetering on the edge of collapse and unreliable for months, leaving the island&#8217;s residents in the dark for hours a day, and sometimes longer, even in better times.
But Saturday&#8217;s blackout incident marks the third major power outage this month, as a majority of the system went down on March 4 when a key thermoelectric generating plant failed. The power grid also went completely offline on Monday for unexplained reasons.
Cuba has experienced a series of total outages in recent years, but two nationwide blackouts in the space of a week is exceptional.
U.S. President Donald Trump began taking measures to block oil from reaching the Caribbean island after Washington deposed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on January 3. Venezuela had previously provided oil to its close ally on favorable terms.
Since then, Trump has cut off Venezuelan exports to Cuba and threatened other countries with punitive tariffs if they sell oil to the island.
Cuba has long blamed the U.S. trade embargo for economic failures including its obsolete power grid, while Washington has attributed the shortfalls to Cuba&#8217;s Soviet-style command economy.

Cuba Begins Recovery Efforts After Second Grid Collapse In A Week

Hundreds of left-wing activists from the United States, Europe, and Latin America descended on Havana this weekend, meeting with communist officials, staying in upscale hotels, and traveling in air-conditioned buses as ordinary Cubans grapple with widespread blackouts and severe shortages of basic necessities.
The “Nuestra América Convoy,” also called the “Our America Convoy to Cuba,” brought roughly 650 delegates from 33 countries and more than 100 organizations to the island, transporting about 20 tons of humanitarian aid, according to organizers.
Delegates arrived by air from countries including Italy, France, Spain, and the United States, with additional participants traveling by sea in a flotilla from Mexico. Some activists arrived earlier in the week, delivering supplies to hospitals in advance of the main delegation.
Some delegates were reportedly housed in high-end accommodations, including five-star hotels, while others were seen traveling in air-conditioned buses and attending official meetings with Miguel Díaz-Canel at government facilities.
Large portions of the island have experienced prolonged blackouts, with outages in some areas stretching beyond 20 hours a day. The country’s fragile infrastructure has been pushed to the brink, leaving millions struggling to access food, water, and medical care.
The Cuban government and activists have blamed U.S. energy restrictions, particularly moves by Donald Trump to target oil shipments, for exacerbating the island’s economic collapse. Organizers framed the convoy as a direct challenge to what they describe as “collective punishment.”
“We cannot allow this,” said David Adler of Progressive International, one of the groups behind the effort. “We cannot normalize it.” Cuban officials echoed that message, with Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernández de Cossío insisting that the country’s political system is “not up for negotiation” in any talks with Washington. At the same time, critics argue the regime’s decades of centralized control and economic mismanagement have played a central role in the island’s long-running hardship.
The optics of foreign activists enjoying stable electricity and modern amenities while locals endure daily deprivation have drawn sharp backlash, particularly from Cuban exiles. “This is a gigantic mockery of the entire Cuban people,” said Mayra Dominguez, a Cuban living in exile in the United States, to the <a href="https://nypost.com/2026/03/21/world-news/tone-deaf-activists-flock-into-havana-staying-in-5-star-hotels-while-island-in-crisis-mockery-of-cuban-people/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CThis%20is%20a%20gigantic%20mockery,It%20is%20outrageous%2C%E2%80%9D%20she%20added.">New York Post</a>. “The left visits Cuba as if it were a party at a zoo and they go to admire the misery from a luxury hotel.”
Cuban artist Salomé García Bacallao, now based in Miami, similarly criticized the government for welcoming foreign delegations while many Cubans remain barred from returning home.
The convoy includes a mix of activists, political figures, and organizations from across the global Left. Among them is leftist streamer Hasan Piker, who <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/DVtURa3FFoa/">broadcast</a> from Havana to his large social media following while promising to produce additional “content” from the trip.
Other participants include international political figures such as Jeremy Corbyn and representatives from leftist parties across Latin America and Europe.
Some of the groups involved, such as The People’s Forum and Code Pink, have previously drawn scrutiny from U.S. officials over alleged <a href="https://naturalresources.house.gov/news/documentsingle.aspx?DocumentID=415189">ties to foreign influence networks</a>.
The effort has also been linked to Mariela Castro, daughter of former Cuban leader Raúl Castro, underscoring the close coordination between activists and the Cuban government.
