President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/joe-biden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Joe Biden</a> announced Thursday that he would commute the sentences of around 1500 people, many of whom were moved from prison and placed into home confinement during the height of the COVID lockdowns. 
In addition to those granted clemency, Biden said he was also pardoning 39 people convicted of non-violent crimes, including drug offenses. In total, the White House said that Biden&#8217;s actions “represent the largest single-day grant of clemency in modern history.”
“The President has issued more sentence commutations at this point in his presidency than any of his recent predecessors at the same point in their first terms,” the White House said. “In the coming weeks, the President will take additional steps to provide meaningful second chances and continue to review additional pardons and commutations.”
The White House said that one person he pardoned is &#8220;a decorated military veteran and pilot.&#8221;
“These individuals are parents, veterans, health care professionals, teachers, advocates, and engaged members of their communities. Many of them have used their experiences in the criminal justice system to inspire and encourage others,” the White House said. 
The White House said as his term winds down, Biden would &#8220;continue to review clemency petitions and deliver criminal justice reform in a manner that advances equity and justice, promotes public safety, supports rehabilitation and reentry, and provides meaningful second chances.&#8221;

Biden previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bidens-mass-pardon-for-marijuana-possession-likely-benefitting-offenders-guilty-of-worse-crimes-expert-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rolled out</a> a mass pardon for those convicted of simple marijuana possession. That mass pardon was criticized by critics who said it would benefit people who were arrested for more serious crimes but plea-bargained down.
“You are going to have a very large number of people affected by this who were charged with something far more serious so that the government had leverage to get them to cooperate, and then they pled it down to a simple misdemeanor possession,” said Paul Larkin at the time, a senior legal research fellow at The Heritage Foundation.
The White House’s announcement on Thursday comes after Biden was widely criticized for giving a sweeping pardon to his son Hunter after promising not to do so. Hunter was facing potential prison time for gun and tax crime convictions. 
One recent Associated Press—NORC Center for Public Affairs Research poll found that only 22% of Americans approved of the Hunter pardon. While 38% of Democrats supported the pardon, just 12% of independents did, and only 7% of Republicans.

House lawmakers released their final comprehensive report on COVID on Monday detailing how government officials misled the public about the origins of the pandemic. 
The <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/12.04.2024-SSCP-FINAL-REPORT.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">520-page report</a> from the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic covered everything from school closures to gain-of-function research to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/show/fauci-unmasked" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Anthony Fauci</a>’s leadership of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. The release of the report comes after the committee spent two years conducting over 30 transcribed interviews and depositions, holding 25 hearings and meetings, and going over over one million pages of documents. 
“The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted a distrust in leadership. Trust is earned,” Chair Brad Wenstrup (R-OH) wrote in a letter accompanying the report. “Accountability, transparency, honesty, and integrity will regain this trust. A future pandemic requires a whole of America response managed by those without personal benefit or bias. We can always do better, and for the sake of future generations of Americans, we must. It can be done.”
One of the key findings of the report was that COVID likely originated and leaked out of a lab, a view that was once banned by Facebook but now echoed by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/covid-likely-leaked-from-wuhan-lab-senate-gop-report" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Senate Republicans</a> and the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/china-responds-to-u-s-energy-departments-revised-wuhan-lab-leak-theory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Department of Energy</a>. The report said that COVID “likely emerged because of a laboratory or research related accident.”
The report noted that public officials from both China and the United States tried to hide facts that might confirm the lab leak theory. “The Chinese government, agencies within the U.S. Government, and some members of the international scientific community sought to cover-up facts concerning the origins of the pandemic,” the report said. 
For example, the lawmakers said that Fauci prompted the writing of an academic paper to undermine the lab leak theory in early 2020. The paper, known as “The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/pandemic-origins-subcommittee-suggests-fauci-prompted-doctors-to-draft-paper-to-disprove-lab-leak-theory" target="_blank" rel="noopener">argued</a> that it was not plausible for the virus to come from a lab. 
The lawmakers further concluded that the NIH funded gain-of-function research at the Wuhan Institute of Virology. According to the report, this research was facilitated by the EcoHealth Alliance and Peter Daszak, who the government <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/hhs-moves-to-defund-ecohealth-alliance-says-action-needed-to-protect-the-public-interest" target="_blank" rel="noopener">moved to bar</a> from future federal funding earlier this year.

The report accused former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo of “medical malpractice,” saying that he acted to publicly cover “up the total number of nursing home fatalities in New York.”  The panel previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/house-panel-refers-andrew-cuomo-to-doj-for-criminal-prosecution-over-covid-testimony" target="_blank" rel="noopener">made a criminal referra</a>l against Cuomo for allegedly lying about his knowledge of a report that was used to defend a New York policy that placed COVID patients in nursing homes.
Additionally, the report was critical of the Biden administration&#8217;s vaccine mandate, which was later struck down by the Supreme Court. The lawmakers wrote that the government was currently failing &#8220;to efficiently, fairly, and transparently adjudicate claims for the COVID-19 vaccine injured.&#8221;
Other findings of the report were that lockdowns of schools caused significant learning challenges for children and that pandemic aid was plagued by fraud and waste. Wenstrup wrote that the lockdowns were overly strict and broad and caused &#8220;predictable anguish and avoidable consequences.&#8221;
“Just a few short years ago, arguing that COVID came from a Chinese lab and that lockdowns &amp; authoritarian measures didn’t work would get you censored and kicked from social media,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) said of the report. “This report will stand as a warning for future generations of what NOT to do.”

In the highlighted sections, Fauci wrote that &#8220;abundant evidence from top evolutionary virologists and leading scientists in other fields strongly suggests that the virus jumped species from an animal reservoir to humans at the Huanan Market in Wuhan, China, and then spread throughout China and the rest of the world.&#8221;
The former White House medical advisor added, &#8220;Trump gave credence to unproven and potentially dangerous substances for COVID-19 prevention and treatment such as bleach injection.&#8221;

Fauci&#8217;s new paper comes just as Trump has named Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, one of Fauci&#8217;s leading critics, to head the National Institutes of Health in the incoming administration.

He told Fox News in 2023 that both Fauci and then-NIH Director Francis Collins had &#8220;created an illusion of scientific consensus around their ideas and marginalized anyone that disagreed with them even though there wasn&#8217;t a scientific consensus. It&#8217;s a pattern of behavior that reflects an abuse of power by American scientific bureaucrats at the very top of our scientific bureaucracies.&#8221;

The 84-year-old Academy Award winner discussed the incident during a recent interview with <a href="https://people.com/al-pacino-had-no-pulse-after-contracting-covid-19-during-pandemic-exclusive-8723931">People</a> to promote his upcoming memoir, “<a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/entertainment">Sonny Boy</a>.” 
&#8220;I thought I experienced death. I might not have. I don&#8217;t think I have, really. I know I made it,&#8221; Pacino told the outlet.
He continued. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think I died. Everybody thought I was dead. How could I be dead? If I was dead, I fainted,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;And when I opened my eyes, there were six paramedics in my living room. There was an ambulance outside the door, and two of my doctors in those space suits [like] on Mars. I looked around and I thought, &#8216;What happened to me?'&#8221;
&#8220;So I couldn&#8217;t have died, because how did all those people gather together, the ambulance in front of my house?&#8221; Pacino said.
The “Scarface” star said his assistant, Michael Quinn, realized what a serious situation Pacino was in and called the ambulance.

Speaking about the same incident with <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/05/magazine/al-pacino-interview.html">The New York Times</a>, Pacino said, “I didn’t see the white light or anything. There’s nothing there. As Hamlet says, ‘To be or not to be’; ‘The undiscovered country from whose bourn, no traveler returns.’ And he says two words: ‘No more.’ It was no more.”

According to a new report, former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo “edited” a state report that minimized the death count in nursing homes from COVID-19.
The House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic, which will interview Cuomo on Tuesday, said Cuomo’s office made “demonstrably false” statements while engaging in a “cover-up,” the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/09/us-news/cuomo-aides-knew-nursing-home-mandate-would-be-great-debacle-helped-gov-edit-report-that-deflated-deaths-house-covid-panel-finds/">reported</a>.
In June 2024, Cuomo blamed federal and state health officials for the nursing home directive. “They [Cuomo and his then-staff] want to assert that that order is exactly the same as the federal CMS, which it is not,” Rep. Marc Molinaro <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/06/11/us-news/cuomo-grilled-by-house-panel-over-nys-covid-nursing-home-deaths-dont-see-a-lot-of-remorse/">said</a>. “The state order says, ‘You shall take back individuals and you cannot deny them solely on the basis of COVID,’ which left them no option but to accept individuals that we knew would cause risk to the other patients.&#8221;
“Andrew Cuomo was attempting to shift blame for what was a clear directive,” Molinaro continued. “When they identified and knew that the order was causing great loss, they subsequently cooked the books to suggest that the numbers of those who died in nursing homes were much less than we knew.”
On March 25, 2020, the New York Department of Health issued an advisory that stated nursing homes had to accept residents returning from hospitals whether or not they had a diagnosis of COVID-19. The <a href="https://skillednursingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/03/DOH_COVID19__NHAdmissionsReadmissions__032520_1585166684475_0.pdf">advisory</a> stated:

During this global health emergency, all NHs must comply with the expedited receipt of residents returning from hospitals to NHs. Residents are deemed appropriate for return to a NH upon a determination by the hospital physician or designee that the resident is medically stable for return.  Hospital discharge planners must confirm to the NH, by telephone, that the resident is medically stable for discharge. Comprehensive discharge instructions must be provided by the hospital prior to the transport of a resident to the NH.
No resident shall be denied re-admission or admission to the NH solely based on a confirmed or suspected diagnosis of COVID-19. NHs are prohibited from requiring a hospitalized resident who is determined medically stable to be tested for COVID-19 prior to admission or readmission.

In the fall of 2020, speaking to Finger Lakes Daily News, Cuomo defended himself from the charge that his policies caused more deaths from COVID in nursing homes, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2020/10/02/andrew-cuomos-latest-nursing-home-deception/">reported</a>. In response to a question about the issue, Cuomo blamed the federal government, attacked Florida&#8217;s state government, claimed that New York “flattened the curve effectively,” and said, “It just never happened in New York, where we needed to say to a nursing home, ‘We need you to take this person even though they’re COVID positive.&#8217; It never happened.”
New York State has reported &#8220;more than 6,600 nursing home COVID-19 related deaths,&#8221; Finger Lakes Daily News reported, &#8220;but that number is likely much higher since New York does not include residents who initially contracted the virus at a nursing home but died after being transferred to a hospital.&#8221; State Senator Tom O’Mara co-sponsored a bill requiring the Department of Health to provide the accurate death toll from those in nursing homes. &#8220;He said many believe that number could be twice as high,&#8221; the Daily News noted.

The outlet asked Cuomo, “Governor, you said earlier that you lie down at night and you can sleep knowing that you saved lives. What would you say to New York residents who lost their loved ones in nursing homes due to your mandate back in late March regarding sending COVID-positive patients back to nursing homes?”
“Yeah, I would say, first of all, that’s not why they lost a loved one,” Cuomo protested. “Your premise, the premise of your question, is just factually wrong. People who were lost in nursing homes were lost because that’s where the virus preys. The virus preys on senior citizens. The virus was introduced in this country in Washington, state of Washington in a nursing home. That’s who succumb to this virus, are immune-compromised senior citizens, and they’re predominantly located in nursing homes.”
“Number two: you look at the nursing home deaths in this state; do you know what number we are by percentage before you made that statement? We’re number 46 out of 50 states,” Cuomo boasted. “And we had the worst problem, and we’re number 46 in terms of percentage of deaths in nursing homes.”

At issue is how the Minnesota-based nonprofit Feeding Our Future (FOF) was <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mn/pr/five-defendants-found-guilty-their-roles-250-million-fraud-scheme" target="_blank" rel="noopener">implicated</a> in what the Department of Justice (DOJ) described as a $250 million fraud scheme that &#8220;exploited&#8221; an operation meant to feed hungry kids in need during the COVID pandemic.

&#8220;Statements in the press by you and your representatives indicate that you and other executive officers were involved, or had knowledge of, MDE’s administration of the FCNP and responsibilities and actions regarding the massive fraud,&#8221; she added.
The committee also sent subpoenas for documents to MDE Commissioner Willie Jett, Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, and Agriculture Department Inspector General Phyllis Fong. Walz and the others received a September 18 deadline.

In 2022, federal prosecutors announced charges against dozens of defendants linked to FOF in what the DOJ described at the time as being &#8220;the largest COVID-19 fraud scheme in the nation.&#8221;
In June of this year, U.S. Attorney Andrew Lugar <a href="https://www.justice.gov/usao-mn/pr/five-defendants-found-guilty-their-roles-250-million-fraud-scheme" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> that five defendants had been convicted by a federal jury, and a total of 23 individuals had been &#8220;held accountable&#8221; for their roles in the $250 million fraud scheme.
Foxx&#8217;s letter to Walz noted that the governor, when asked about not holding agencies accountable and whether MDE employees would be disciplined, <a href="https://www.startribune.com/we-can-always-do-better-gov-tim-walz-says-of-education-department-after-report-criticizes-oversight-of-feeding-our-future/600374449" target="_blank" rel="noopener">replied</a>, &#8220;This wasn’t malfeasance.&#8221;
Walz also stated, &#8220;There’s not a single state employee that was implicated in doing anything that was illegal. They simply didn’t do as much due diligence as they should’ve.&#8221;
The Office of the Legislative Auditor in Minnesota <a href="https://www.auditor.leg.state.mn.us/sreview/pdf/2024-mdefof.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a report this summer that said MDE&#8217;s oversight of FOF had been &#8220;inadequate&#8221; and listed ways in which it &#8220;created opportunities for fraud.&#8221;
A spokesperson for Walz told <a href="https://www.axios.com/local/twin-cities/2024/06/14/feeding-our-future-fraud-minnesota-department-education-audit" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Axios</a> his administration &#8220;made many of the corrective actions suggested by the OLA [Office of the Legislative Auditor] and taken &#8216;strong steps to find and eliminate any remaining vulnerabilities in government programs.'&#8221;

Former New York Gov.Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, will testify before Congress next week regarding his response to the COVID pandemic.
Cuomo will be questioned publicly for the first time on September 10, the Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Pandemic said in <a href="https://oversight.house.gov/release/breaking-former-new-york-governor-andrew-cuomo-to-testify-at-public-hearing-on-september-10/">a press release</a>. The press release said Cuomo would be questioned “about his Administration’s issuance of unscientific guidance that forced New York nursing homes and long-term care facilities to admit COVID-19 positive patients.”
On March 25, 2020, then-Gov. Cuomo’s office issued a <a href="https://skillednursingnews.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2020/03/DOH_COVID19__NHAdmissionsReadmissions__032520_1585166684475_0.pdf">mandate</a> requiring nursing homes in New York to accept COVID-positive patients on short notice, whether they were equipped to isolate and care for them or not. The policy led to nearly 13,000 nursing home deaths – or about 14% of New York’s pre-pandemic nursing home population, according to a <a href="https://www.empirecenter.org/publications/the-states-revised-nursing-home-death-toll/">report</a> from the Empire Center, a non-partisan think tank.

The Cuomo administration <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/nursing-home-deaths-in-new-york-were-massively-undercounted-new-york-ag-finds">undercounted</a> the deaths by including thousands of nursing home patient deaths with hospital deaths since the patients had been transferred to hospitals before they died.
In a thread <a href="https://x.com/COVIDSelect/status/1830914951499690140">posted</a> to X, the subcommittee said that it had privately interviewed Cuomo about his nursing home policies and that he was “shockingly callous when discussing New York’s nursing home mortality rate.”
&#8220;…let&#8217;s say there&#8217;s a 3,000 [deaths] differential, 2500. Who cares? What difference does it make in any dimension to anyone about anything?&#8221; Cuomo reportedly asked, according to the subcommittee, which will be releasing the transcription before the former governor testifies.
Also during that interview, according to the subcommittee, Cuomo claimed he was unaware of the March 25 mandate until a month after it had been issued. He then reportedly claimed that nursing homes had “an escape valve” and were not actually forced to admit COVID-positive patients. He then said his only regret was that nursing homes were “confused” by the mandate, before clarifying that he didn’t “accept the premise that they were actually confused by it.&#8221;
“Andrew Cuomo owes answers to the 15,000 families who lost loved ones in New York’s nursing homes during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Committee Chairman Brad Wenstrup (R-OH). “On September 10, Americans will have the opportunity to hear directly from the former governor about New York’s potentially fatal nursing home policies.”

“During closed-door testimony, Mr. Cuomo was shockingly callous when pressed to explain discrepancies in nursing home death counts, repeatedly deflected responsibility for the nursing home directive, and most egregiously, showed little remorse for the thousands of lives lost,” Wenstrup added. “A true leader owns up to his mistakes and takes responsibility for wrongdoing. That is not what we saw from Mr. Cuomo during his term as governor nor during his transcribed interview. We hope that during his public hearing next week, Mr. Cuomo will stop dodging accountability and honestly answer the American people.”

Vice President <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/kamala-harris">Kamala Harris&#8217;</a> presidential campaign is mandating the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/covid-19-vaccine">COVID-19 vaccine</a> for those interested in working for her.
On the official presidential <a href="https://kamalaharris.com/work-with-us/">website</a> for Harris and her running mate Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, under the option “work for us,” is a list of job opportunities with the campaign.
The individual <a href="https://jobs.lever.co/BFP/a3db8c48-0d22-4863-8ee1-b43b8d0d1a95">jobs</a> pages contain a list of responsibilities and qualifications and underneath those is a paragraph about being vaccinated.
“Harris for President requires all employees to be ‘up to date’ on COVID-19 vaccination status as prescribed by the CDC as a condition of employment, unless otherwise prohibited by applicable law,” the statement read.
“If you seek a reasonable accommodation in relation to the campaign&#8217;s COVID-19 policy, you should speak to the HR Department prior to reporting to an office location,” the statement added.
A message on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) <a href="https://www.cdc.gov/covid/vaccines/stay-up-to-date.html">website</a> reads, “CDC recommends the 2023–2024 updated COVID-19 vaccines—Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, or Novavax—to protect against serious illness from COVID-19.”

As the campaign stated, “up to date” per the CDC means, “People aged 5 – 64 years. You are up to date when you get 1 age-appropriate updated COVID-19 vaccine.”
And for people aged 65 years and older, it said, “You are up to date when you have received 2 updated 2023–2024 COVID-19 vaccine doses.”

In February, the largest global study to date looked at medical issues among nearly 100 million people who received the COVID vaccine and found a higher-than-expected increase in neurological- and heart-related problems following the shot, as previously <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/largest-covid-vax-study-to-date-finds-higher-than-expected-increase-in-heart-and-brain-issues-following-jab">reported</a>.
As the Daily Wire <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/legacy-media-acknowledges-possible-injury-from-covid-vaccine">previously reported</a>, there have been nearly 13,000 claims filed with the vaccine compensation program alleging harm caused by the pandemic response, with more than 10,000 of those claims citing the vaccine as causing injury or death.

Minnesota, under Democratic Gov. Tim Walz, prioritized non-white residents for COVID-19 treatments during the pandemic.
In Minnesota, an “ethical framework” prioritized black 18-year-olds over elderly whites, even though the elderly were at a much higher risk of severe complications due to COVID, the Free Beacon <a href="https://freebeacon.com/coronavirus/food-and-drug-administration-drives-racial-rationing-of-covid-drugs/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in January 2022.
The racial discrimination <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/multiple-states-prioritizing-covid-care-based-on-race-thanks-to-the-fda" target="_blank" rel="noopener">stemmed from</a> the FDA’s guidance when authorizing monoclonal antibodies and oral antivirals for emergency use. The FDA only authorized these treatments for “high risk” patients, and included race as a factor determining someone to be “high risk.”
As the Free Beacon noted in 2022:
<blockquote>The <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/149534/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener">FDA “fact sheet” for Sotrovimab</a>, the only monoclonal antibody effective against the Omicron variant, states that “race or ethnicity” can “place individual patients at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19.” The <a href="https://www.fda.gov/media/155050/download" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fact sheet for Paxlovid</a>, Pfizer’s new antiviral pill, uses the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s definition of “high risk,” which states that “systemic health and social inequities” have put minorities “at increased risk of getting sick and dying from COVID-19.”</blockquote>
Even though the guidance is nonbinding, several states used it to justify race-based triage to the detriment of those at a higher risk of dying from COVID-19.
Minnesota, for example, explicitly cited the FDA as the reason it prioritized lower-risk minorities over higher-risk white people.
“The FDA has acknowledged that in addition to certain underlying health conditions, race and ethnicity ‘may also place individual patients at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19,’” Minnesota’s racial triage plan states. “FDA’s acknowledgment means that race and ethnicity alone, apart from other underlying health conditions, may be considered in determining eligibility for [monoclonal antibodies].”
The FDA said race may be considered, but it never said race should be the priority when determining who should get treatment.
Unsurprisingly, even though men were approximately 50% more likely to die from COVID than women – according to <a href="https://www.brookings.edu/blog/up-front/2021/10/19/at-least-65000-more-men-than-women-have-died-from-covid-19-in-the-us/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">research</a> from the Brookings Institution – sex was not included as a risk factor in the FDA guidance.
As the Free Beacon noted, the triage in Minnesota gave non-white patients two points when determining risk, whereas comorbidities like “hypertension in a patient 55 years and older” were only worth one point.
The policy followed others in Minnesota, which are getting renewed attention after Vice President Kamala Harris chose Walz as her running mate. Another policy Walz implemented was a COVID hotline that allowed Minnesotans <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/flashback-walz-implemented-covid-hotline-to-snitch-on-neighbors" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to snitch on their neighbors</a> for violating lockdown orders.

Minnesota Democratic Governor Tim Walz’s COVID policies during the 2020-2021 pandemic included a stay-at-home order, required masking, school closures, and a state hotline for residents to report others who violated government guidelines.
On March 25, 2020, Walz replaced his initial stay-at-home order with another one that allowed for gatherings of friends and family of 10 people or less. By July 2, he signed another executive order requiring Minnesotans to wear a face covering in indoor businesses and indoor public settings.
“Right now there’s no better way to demonstrate our Minnesotan values than by wearing a mask,” he declared.
That same month, the state of Minnesota implemented a hotline for residents to report violators of COVID-19 orders; it was reportedly monitored by law enforcement until November 2020.
“A hotline set up by Gov. Tim Walz’s administration to monitor compliance with his 2020 stay-at-home order generated thousands of reports from Minnesotans who snitched on their neighbors for things like playing basketball in a park, walking their dogs, and throwing small parties,” Alpha News <a href="https://alphanews.org/one-minnesota-thousands-reported-on-neighbors-using-tattle-tale-hotline-during-pandemic/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> in July 2022. “The hotline was launched in March 2020 and law enforcement continued to monitor it until November, well after the stay-at-home order ended.”
The hotline angered the state’s top Republican, Senate Majority Leader Paul Gazelka, who <a href="https://minnesotareformer.com/briefs/gazelka-criticizes-state-hotline-asking-minnesotans-to-report-violations-of-stay-home-order/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">tweeted</a>, “Please take this hotline down @GovTimWalz. It’s not necessary and it’s not how Minnesotans want to treat each other. We can all show a bit of kindness to our neighbors as we manage our times and needs differently in the stay-at-home efforts.”

Walz responded, “It is being used, and we simply want to let people be able to call and let folks know. It’s for their own good. If we see people that may not be as informed on this, it’s an educational piece.”
In August 2020, the Upper Midwest Law Center <a href="https://www.umlc.org/minnesota-supreme-court-approves-governor-walzs-covid-19-emergency-declaration/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed a lawsuit</a> on behalf of 16 Minnesota citizens, business owners, and churches, challenging Walz’s executive order mandating masks in indoor public spaces. “UMLC argued that the Governor was taking upon himself the whole legislative power of the State, but only the state legislature has the authority to enact such laws consistent with the Minnesota Constitution,” UMLC noted.
In May, the Minnesota Supreme Court <a href="https://www.startribune.com/minnesota-supreme-court-pandemic-emergency-declaration-ok-under-state-law/600365089">ruled</a> that Walz&#8217;s actions were constitutional and he acted within his executive powers.
Walz did not remove the statewide mask requirement until May 13, 2021, stating, “This great day is possible because vaccines have proven to be effective.”

In one example of a complaint, someone alerted authorities to a church service that wasn’t following Walz’s “legal requirements,” the outlet noted.
“I am aware that the apostolic Lutheran church at [address] is planning to hold church services oct 2-4th [sic]. Hundreds are expected And [sic] they will be serving meals in the church dining hall. I don’t believe this fits with legal requirements and I am. Aware [sic] that multiple families that attend this church currently have coronavirus.&#8221;
People also called in lists of “non-essential” businesses that remained open or didn’t strictly follow government masking requirements.
A recording of the hotline circulating online reveals a prerecorded message telling callers they have reached the “Office of Public Safety Stay At Home Hotline.”
“The information you leave is considered public information,” it continued. “At the tone, please leave the following information: your name, your callback number, how the stay-at-home order is being violated, and where the stay-at-home order was violated.”

The hotline flew in the face of the message Gov. Walz sent in 2023 regarding LGBT issues.

He was immediately met with responses from people pointing out the snitch hotline.
In addition to calling in tips, people could also email complaints. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) noted to Alpha News that about 10,000 COVID-related emails were sent, many of which were spam.
According to the outlet, in one email someone reported “a very large gathering of a pick up basketball game with a lot of observers that easily totaled 30+.”

Another person reported that they had seen a Facebook photo of a small group of people working out at a local park, even though the people could be seen spaced out several feet from each other.
“I have a real problem with this and they are inviting more people to join,” the person reporting complained.”
The list goes on, including someone who reported an employee who was “not practicing social distancing and [was] displaying risky behaviors during this crisis.” Another person reported a police officer who threw a birthday party at his house, and someone else reported that there were “too many people in Walgreens at once.”
Another email complained that people were “going to their cabins,” and others noted that construction workers weren’t practicing social distancing, and that call centers were still operating. Yet another person complained that an insurance agency had three employees in the office.
Another complained that people were buying non-essential items at a convenience store, like lottery ticks, candy, or soda.
“Customers are coming and saying, ‘I’m bored and needed to get out of the house,’” the complaint said. “They buy lottery tickets, a candy bar, a soda … those items are not ‘essential.&#8217;”
