Higher education is in a downward spiral of decreasing public confidence from which it is incapable of escaping without outside intervention.
For ideological and political reasons, however, most of higher ed is rejecting out-of-hand the Trump administration’s offers to help move higher ed back towards the center. That may prove to be a historic mistake.
A recent <a href="https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2025/10/15/growing-share-of-americans-say-the-us-higher-education-system-is-headed-in-the-wrong-direction/">Pew survey shows</a> 70% of Americans, including majorities across all major demographic groups and both political parties, believe academia is going in the wrong direction. In 2010, 75% of Americans thought college was “very important,” <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/695003/perceived-importance-college-hits-new-low.aspx">according to Gallup</a>, and today only 35% do. This is an all time low.
There are many reasons for the loss of confidence, but part of it certainly is that higher education, particularly at the “elite” level, is a liberal bubble isolated from the mainstream. <a href="https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2025/9/3/faculty-response-liberal/">At Harvard</a>, for example, under 10% of the faculty self-identify as conservative or very conservative compared with <a href="https://news.gallup.com/poll/655190/political-parties-historically-polarized-ideologically.aspx">approximately 38%</a> of the general public. Over 60% identify as liberal/very liberal compared to only 25% of the general public.
Harvard and other elite institutions do not “look like” America politically. For decades campuses cultivated a <a href="https://criticalrace.org/">Critical Race and DEI culture</a> that prizes group identity over individual merit, orthodoxy over debate, and exclusion over persuasion.
I see it at Cornell. DEI is a worldview that treats people as members of group identity categories and functions with something close to religious fanaticism. Changing the name from DEI to Inclusion and Belonging, as Cornell did, is just a superficial ploy.

While mocking the general public, higher ed depends on that public, in the form of the federal government, which provides <a href="https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/G160311A027NBEA">hundreds of billions</a> in federal grants and support annually. Many top-tier research universities rely on federal grants and support for substantial <a href="https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/how-much-federal-funding-do-colleges-and-universities-receive">double-digit</a> percentages of their budgets.
With the change in federal government control from Joe Biden to Donald Trump, a clash over funding and the trajectory of higher education was inevitable.
President Trump’s critics say he is trying to smash higher education. That is wrong. What he is doing, with a bluntness that makes people uncomfortable, is using federal funding, the only lever left to rescue the failing system.
The administration’s new <a href="https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/Compact-for-Academic-Excellence-in-Higher-Education-10.1.pdf">Compact</a> for Academic Excellence in Higher Education offers financial incentives and expedited funding for institutions that reform and certify compliance in encouraging diversity of viewpoint, stopping discrimination, and raising merit rather than group identity as the focal point for advancement.
It’s a carrot and stick approach. The reward for moving towards the center is preferential funding treatment. For those that refuse, they can continue in the current system, where scrutiny of civil rights compliance risks loss of funding.
While the Trump administration has encouraged schools to seriously consider and provide feedback on the Compact, <a href="https://www.foxnews.com/us/universities-defiant-trumps-academic-excellence-compact-feedback-deadline-passes">most who have responded</a> have rejected any negotiation.
Instead, academia has embarked on a campaign to demonize the Trump proposal, framing it as “extortion.” While the higher education public relations campaign has had <a href="https://archive.is/2025.10.24-233217/https://www.chronicle.com/article/americans-think-trump-is-overreaching-on-higher-ed">some impact</a> in turning the public against Trump’s Compact, that doesn’t change the reality of public loss of confidence in higher education.
Objections to the Compact center on maintaining academic independence. That’s great in concept, but the reality is that nearly-complete independence has turned higher ed into an unsustainable political bubble.
Up to now, higher ed had almost unlimited funding and independence. All they had to do was not go crazy left. But they couldn’t restrain themselves, and that’s how they got Trump’s Compact.
An adult in the room is needed, and the Trump administration is attempting to play that role.
Most of the Compact’s proposed reforms are necessary. Protect free expression. Enforce existing conduct rules. Make administrators responsible for compliance. Limit practices that have turned American universities into leftist enclaves detached from the nation. The goal is not to impose a conservative orthodoxy but to restore diversity of thought and bring higher ed back towards the center.
Though the original deadline for the first nine schools has passed, the administration <a href="https://x.com/EDSecMcMahon/status/1979323613548364278">continues in discussion</a> with them and others and has signaled openness as well. The universities should engage enthusiastically.
The Compact is not perfect, and there are some provisions that could be negotiated at least on a school-by-school basis. But to reject it out of hand is a sign that higher ed has not yet come to grips with reality.
Under the current system, America’s universities are losing the public&#8217;s confidence and will lose public funding and relevance. The Compact is not an attempt to destroy higher education, it’s an attempt to save higher ed from itself.

Don’t trust the Ivy League to produce well-educated students.
The eight institutions that make up the Ivy League are among the most selective in the United States, and their graduates occupy the elite echelons of American life. Parents often spend $80,000 or more per year for their children to attend Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Penn, Columbia, Brown, Cornell, or Dartmouth and have an opportunity to punch a ticket to the top.
But what really happens there? Do graduates really join “the fellowship of educated men and women,” as Harvard used to assert each year at its commencement ceremony?
Some do. Many don’t.
Like most American colleges, most of the Ivies grant signiﬁcant latitude in the undergraduate curriculum. (Columbia is the only exception.) Students not only choose a major — from as many as ninety options—but they also choose the content of their core curriculum. Core curricula historically guaranteed consistency for undergraduates, reflecting a wise faculty’s determination of the knowledge and academic skills most worth having. Today, however, most general education requirements in the Ivies are so general — some arts here, some sciences there—that they are simply another opportunity for undirected self-actualization. Hundreds of course options can fulﬁll each “requirement.”
These options, moreover, vary tremendously — from serious, rigorous, and open to challenge, to whimsical, activist, and tendentious. This variation is greatest in the humanities and social sciences. For every course seeking to develop a broader or deeper understanding of man, nature, and the cosmos, there are dozens preoccupied with pop culture, identity politics, progressive activism, or hyper-specialization.

Writing requirements are even worse. Putatively about writing, such courses indulge the moral and political conceits of their instructors. At the other extreme, most courses that meet science requirements actually teach science, even though light courses are available for slackers. (At Cornell, the course discussing Disney films to learn about animals is an exception, and Columbia still offers Physics for Poets.)
A generation ago, the critique of Ivy League curricula was that a student could graduate without being required to take any Shakespeare, American history, or Western civilization. That complaint remains well-grounded. Today, the situation is worse: Can a serious student find even one core course on Shakespeare or America worth taking?
By not providing a content-rich core curriculum — a set of required courses in the arts and sciences — but instead allowing students to choose from a wide range of courses to fulﬁll vague distribution requirements, most of the Ivies risk having students graduate with what the American Council of Trustees and Alumni calls a “thin and patchy education, with no guarantee that they have mastered a core set of facts or skills.” Absent strong curricular requirements, universities cannot guarantee that students “learn what they need to know to be informed citizens, effective workers, and lifelong learners.”
Fortunately, a strong education remains available to Ivy students in most areas of general education. They will have to work for it and get wise advice. But by far, Ivy League students are offered, and thus receive, a truly substandard education by any reasonable measure. Dante or Cardi B? Every educated man and woman ought to know the difference.

Cornell University, which had $1 billion in federal funds <a href="https://edition.cnn.com/2025/04/09/us/cornell-northwestern-federal-funding-freeze/index.html">frozen</a> by President Donald Trump earlier this month and is reportedly <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/04/08/us/politics/cornell-northwestern-university-funds-trump.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share&amp;referringSource=articleShare">facing an investigation</a> for its antisemitism, is now refusing to cancel a performance by an openly antisemitic performer at its end-of-year celebration.
R&amp;B singer Kehlani, who released a video in 2024 that opened with “Long Live the Intifada” and featured a Palestinian flag in the background with dancers wearing keffiyahs and brandishing, also published a <a href="https://x.com/episodesent/status/1795271167500333566">post</a> on X in which she stated, “It’s f*** Israel, it’s f*** Zionism, and it’s also f*** a lot of y’all too.” In July 2024, she said at a performance, “Beyond an end to the ceasefire, we need an end to the occupation,” as the Cornell Daily Sun <a href="https://www.cornellsun.com/article/2025/04/kotlikoff-rebuts-kehlani-s-slope-day-headline-it-s-too-late-to-secure-another-performer">reported</a>. Kehlani also “shared a map online that eliminates the state of Israel and refused to condemn Hamas for the Oct. 7, 2023, massacre,” the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2025/04/20/us-news/cornell-ripped-for-inviting-kehlani-to-perform-on-campus/">stated</a>.
Kehlani <a href="https://archive.ph/59KkF">shared</a> several X posts which stated, ‘Zionists are all evil.’ She continued her rant, claiming Zionists were the ‘scum of the earth’ and told them to ‘go to hell,’” StopAntisemitism <a href="https://stopantisemitism.org/as-week/kehlani/">noted</a>. “In additional Instagram stories, Kehlani falsely accused Israeli forces of beheading Palestinian babies and intentionally burning people alive.”
On April 10, it was publicly announced that Kehlani would headline Slope Day, the annual celebration after the end of classes on May 7. Later that week, Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff<a href="https://www.cornellsun.com/article/2025/04/kotlikoff-rebuts-kehlani-s-slope-day-headline-it-s-too-late-to-secure-another-performer"> protested</a>, “We found out about the social media of this performer roughly three weeks ago. It’s too late to secure another performer that will be acceptable or appropriate for Slope Day.”
“We also altered that contract to make it clear that if there are any political events at the performance, there is full forfeit of the whole compensation. We assured ourselves to the extent [possible] that this will be a successful event … without politics,” he added.
“In a sign of mounting backlash, members of the student group Cornellians for Israel <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSehZROdjHLYGXcCAAruSkCXfvTFgj8DPoh4dOUyRA5jE1_1Ng/viewform">have launched a </a>petition <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/aaeyed-stand-up-against-antisemitism-at-cornell-university?attribution_id=sl:d5f847f9-962d-43ba-adea-8f3ef6c2ae68&amp;lang=en_US&amp;utm_campaign=fp_sharesheet&amp;utm_content=amp13_c-amp15_t1&amp;utm_medium=customer&amp;utm_source=copy_link">and GoFundMe drive</a> demanding that the school replace Kehlani with another performer — or they will boycott the event and select their own entertainer to headline a unifying counter-concert on the Ithaca campus,” The New York Post added.
Billboard <a href="https://www.billboard.com/culture/pride/kehlani-sexuality-queer-twitter-8367038/">reported</a> in 2018 that Kehlani said in a series of tweets, “i’m queer, not bi, not straight. i’m attracted to women, men, REALLY attracted to queer men, non binary people, intersex people, trans people. lil poly pansexual papi hello good morning. does that answer your questions?”

Cornell Refuses To Cancel Performance By Openly Antisemitic Singer

A PhD candidate at Cornell University whose hatred of the United States &#8220;knows no bound” has been ordered to surrender to immigration authorities after his student visa was revoked by the Trump administration.
Momodou Taal, a dual citizen of Gambia and the United Kingdom, is a plaintiff in a lawsuit attempting to block the enforcement of Trump’s executive orders to deport foreign nationals who participated in anti-Israeli protests at various American universities. Taal is an outspoken left-wing activist whose <a href="https://africasacountry.com/2024/09/from-cairo-to-cornell">academic career</a> has centered on the study of Marxism, Islam, anti-colonialism and Pan-Africanism.
“We cannot allow international students, faculty, immigrants and people of conscience to live in fear,” Taal <a href="https://x.com/MomodouTaal/status/1901258157545967998/photo/4">stated</a> after filing suit. “This is a fight for a future free from oppression. A fight that refuses to normalize genocide and our ability to speak out against it. I expect this will be a long drawn out battle, but we will be victorious.”
On Friday, the Trump administration <a href="https://freebeacon.com/campus/trump-admin-yanks-visa-from-cornell-protest-leader-who-said-he-takes-his-cue-from-the-armed-resistance-in-palestine/">sent</a> Taal and his legal counsel an e-mail informing him that his visa was revoked and that he was no longer welcome in the United States. &#8220;ICE invites Mr. Taal and his counsel to appear in-person at the HSI Office in Syracuse at a mutually agreeable time for personal service of the NTA and for Mr. Taal to surrender to ICE custody.&#8221;
Taal’s supporters claim that his visa was revoked as retaliation for the lawsuit.
“Lawyers at the so-called Justice Department made this request to his attorneys within hours of us having asked the court to stop them from doing precisely that,” immigration attorney Eric Lee told <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/mar/21/ice-cornell-university-student-sued-trump-administration">The Guardian</a>. “It’s very difficult to explain how unprecedented this is.”
Hundreds of Cornell students and faculty rallied in support of Taal on Thursday, after a failed attempt by law enforcement to detain him.
“We have academic freedom on this campus; we have freedom of speech on this campus,” Cornell Professor Risa Lieberwitz <a href="https://www.wbng.com/2025/03/20/rally-held-cornell-momodou-taal-amid-lawsuit-against-trump/">said</a>. “We will act together collectively to push back and to protect our colleagues, our students, and our staff.”

Those who support deporting Mr. Taal have pointed to his long history of violent anti-American rhetoric. In 2022, shortly before entering the United States, Taal wrote: “The end of the US in our lifetime in sha Allah [god willing].” He has also <a href="https://thepostmillennial.com/trump-admin-revokes-visa-of-cornell-student-that-took-cue-from-the-armed-resistance-in-palestine-called-for-americas-destruction">stated</a>: “My Hatred of the US Empire knows no bounds” and that “absolutely anyone the US calls an enemy is my friend.”

As if to belabor the point, in the aftermath of the October 7th attacks, which killed roughly 1,200 civilians in Israel, including more than 40 Americans, Taal <a href="https://freebeacon.com/campus/trump-admin-yanks-visa-from-cornell-protest-leader-who-said-he-takes-his-cue-from-the-armed-resistance-in-palestine/">voiced</a> his support for Hamas, stating: “Wherever you have oppression, you will find those who [are] fighting against it. Glory to the resistance!&#8221; In a 2024 campus demonstration, Taal told fellow protestors to take their “cue from the armed resistance in Palestine.”
Taal has also called for the destruction of the state of Israel, repeating genocidal slogans such as “from the river to the sea” and stating that “there can be no path forward except for the complete eradication of zionism.”
The case bears some similarities to the recent arrest of Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia student whose green card was revoked in response to his participation in violent anti-Israel campus protests during his time as a grad student.
“In the past 48 hours, the administration has taken unprecedented steps to bypass the courts, by pressuring our client, Mr. Momodou Taal, to surrender to ICE,” Taal’s lawyer, Maria Kari, <a href="https://x.com/MomodouTaal?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor">said</a> in a statement. “This case is a litmus test for the state of free speech in America. Each of us &#8211; regardless of our political beliefs &#8211; should be alarmed by the government punishing people for their opinions.”
The Trump administration remains adamant that the deportation of Taal, Khalil, and their fellow travelers is a matter of national security, not an infringement on freedom of speech, and that immigration to the United States is a privilege and not a right.
“I find it ironic that a lot of these people out there defending the First Amendment speech, alleged free speech rights of these Hamas sympathizers, they had no problem pressuring social media to censor American political speech,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/rubio-rips-censorship-advocates-for-saying-pro-terrorist-foreigners-have-first-amendment-rights">said</a> last week during his appearance on CBS’ &#8220;Face the Nation.&#8221; “The bottom line is this, if you are in this country to promote Hamas, to promote terrorist organizations, to participate in vandalism, to participate in acts of rebellion and riots on campus … you’re going to leave. We don’t want terrorists in America.”

The Cornell University professor who cheered the slaughter of innocent Israelis on October 7 as “exhilarating” has returned to teaching.
Professor Russell Rickford had taken an <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ivy-league-prof-takes-abrupt-sabbatical-after-cheerleading-exhilarating-hamas-attacks" target="_blank" rel="noopener">abrupt leave of absence</a> just weeks after the massacre following blowback to his comments. Now, nearly 11 months later, Rickford is back teaching, the New York Post <a href="https://nypost.com/2024/09/15/us-news/cornell-prof-russell-rickford-who-lauded-hamas-attack-back-at-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>.
Rickford, a history professor, was shamed into taking “voluntary leave” after he cheered the deaths of more than 1,200 people on Israeli soil.
“It was exhilarating, it was energizing! &#8230; I was exhilarated!” Rickford <a href="https://www.thecornellreview.org/breaking-cornell-prof-hamas-attacks-exhilarating-energizing/">said</a> on October 15 of last year.
The next day, Rickford <a href="https://cornellsun.com/2023/10/18/rickford-a-statement-regarding-my-actions-from-oct-15/#:~:text=Russell%20Rickford%20is%20an%20associate,at%20rr447%40cornell.edu." target="_blank" rel="noopener">apologized</a> in The Cornell Daily Sun for his remarks following intense backlash.
“I apologize for the horrible choice of words that I used in a portion of a speech that was intended to stress grassroots African American, Jewish and Palestinian traditions of resistance to oppression,” Rickford said in his apology. “I recognize that some of the language I used was reprehensible and did not reflect my values. As I said in the speech, I abhor violence and the violent targeting of civilians. The apology didn’t quell dissent, and a Change.org petition was launched demanding he resign. The petition gathered more than 11,000 signatures, and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Rep. Claudia Tenney (R-NY) also called for Rickford to resign.
“As a person of authority at an educational institution, to celebrate murder, rape and abducting children and slaughtering children, I think he should be fired,” <a href="https://cnycentral.com/news/local/new-york-senator-calls-for-firing-of-cornell-university-professor" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gillibrand said.</a> “There’s certainly no space for pro-Hamas protestors. That is someone who is supporting death, destruction, rape, murder, and slaughtering of innocent children, and families and seniors and holding hostages, so that cannot be supported.”
“By perpetuating these abhorrent views, Professor Rickford has not only violated his ethical responsibility as an educator but has also jeopardized the safety of the Jewish community and tarnished Cornell University’s reputation,” Tenney said in a letter to Cornell University’s president.
Rickford then took a nearly year-long leave, <a href="https://www.thecornellreview.org/rickford-called-hamas-attacks-exhilarating-takes-leave/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">announced</a> by Cornell University’s media relations department.
“Professor Russell Rickford has requested and received approval to take a leave of absence from the university,” the statement said.
But now he is back to teaching without any punishment, though it is unclear whether he was paid while on leave.
Rickford is teaching at least two courses at Cornell this semester, the Post reported, including African Americans Vision of America and Socialism in America. He is also teaching a seminar.
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) blasted the professor’s return.
“He found the 10/7 massacre, rape and torture of 1,200 civilians as ‘exhilarating,’” Fetterman said in a post on X. “Unsurprisingly, he was welcomed back. This is the personification of elite educational rot and antisemitism at the core of so many anti-Israel campus protests.”

Cornell University President Martha Pollack announced her resignation on Thursday, becoming the third Ivy League school president to step down this year after being blasted for their handling of anti-Israel demonstrations that swept through college campuses.
Pollack said her decision to quit &#8220;is mine and mine alone,&#8221; saying her seven years of leading the university were &#8220;fruitful and gratifying,&#8221; The Wall Street Journal <a href="https://www.wsj.com/us-news/education/cornell-university-president-martha-pollack-retirement-13ff2f12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The Cornell president will officially resign on June 30, and Provost Michael I. Kotlikoff will serve as the interim president.
“I understand that there will be lots of speculation about my decision, so let me be as clear as I can: This decision is mine and mine alone. After seven fruitful and gratifying years as Cornell’s president—and after a career in research and academia spanning five decades—I’m ready for a new chapter in my life,” Pollack wrote in a letter.
With Pollack&#8217;s announcement, three Ivy League school presidents will have resigned within months of each other after facing calls to be fired over anti-Semitism going unchecked on the colleges&#8217; campuses. In a letter to the board&#8217;s chair, Lindseth also accused Cornell of prioritizing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) over &#8220;discovering and disseminating knowledge.&#8221;
Lindseth <a href="https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-13402605/Cornell-University-President-Martha-Pollack-donor-antisemitism-campus-Israel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">added</a> that he is &#8220;alarmed by the diminished quality of education offered lately by my alma mater because of its disastrous involvement with DEI policies that have infiltrated every part of the university.&#8221;

Another Ivy League School President Resigns After Months Of Anti-Israel Protests On Campus

Columbia University, Cornell University, and University of Pennsylvania are among seven schools being investigated for alleged incidents of anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim harassment, the Education Department announced on Thursday.
Other schools facing the probe are Lafayette College, Wellesley College, The Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, and a public school district in Kansas, the Maize Unified School District.
The investigation <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/16/politics/department-of-education-antisemitism-islamophobia-investigations?cid=ios_app" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reportedly</a> involves five allegations of anti-Semitic harassment and two complaints of anti-Muslim harassment. The Education Department did not disclose which schools are facing which allegations.
However, the University of Pennsylvania and Wellesley were accused of anti-Semitism in federal complaints filed last week by a Jewish legal advocacy group.
The group cited an email from Wellesley dorm advisors that allegedly stated that “there should be no space, no consideration, and no support for Zionism” at Wellesley.
Wellesley reportedly <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/penn-lafayette-other-colleges-under-investigation-for-alleged-antisemitism-and-islamophobia/3698937/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> that the Education Department&#8217;s investigation is in response to the complaint from the advocacy group. The school also <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/penn-lafayette-other-colleges-under-investigation-for-alleged-antisemitism-and-islamophobia/3698937/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement that Wellesley “responded quickly and decisively” to the dorm email incident.
The Jewish advocacy group also claimed University of Pennsylvania professors have made anti-Semitic comments in the classroom and on social media and that the university has not done enough to support Jewish students while pro-Palestinian rallies are held on campus.
Also this month, the University of Pennsylvania <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/06/business/upenn-fbi-antisemitic-threats/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">alerted</a> the FBI to a series of threatening anti-Semitic emails sent to university staff.
University of Pennsylvania President Liz Magill <a href="https://www.nbcphiladelphia.com/news/local/penn-lafayette-other-colleges-under-investigation-for-alleged-antisemitism-and-islamophobia/3698937/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> the school &#8220;has made clear antisemitism is vile and pernicious and has no place at Penn,&#8221; adding that the university will &#8220;continue to vigilantly combat antisemitism and all forms of hate.&#8221;
Earlier this month, a Cornell University student was <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/01/us/cornell-university-antisemitic-threat-suspect-wednesday/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">arrested</a> and federally charged for allegedly posting threats to kill Cornell’s Jewish students. Cornell canceled all classes on November 3 amid “extraordinary stress” over the situation.
The schools being scrutinized by the probe risk losing federal funding if they do not comply with recommendations the Department of Education gives them at the end of the investigations.
“Hate has no place in our schools, period. When students are targeted because they are — or are perceived to be — Jewish, Muslim, Arab, Sikh or any other ethnicity or shared ancestry, schools must act to ensure safe and inclusive educational environments where everyone is free to learn,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/11/16/politics/department-of-education-antisemitism-islamophobia-investigations?cid=ios_app" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> in a statement on Thursday.
The investigations come in the wake of October 7, when Palestinian terror group Hamas launched deadly terrorist attacks on Israel that killed more than 1,400 people, including women and children. Israel has responded with airstrikes and a ground offensive.
Since Hamas&#8217; attack, college campuses have been rocked by pro-Palestinian protests and allegations of anti-Semitic incidents on campus.
At New York University (NYU) this week, a group of Jewish students <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/jewish-students-sue-nyu-alleging-egregious-anti-semitism-on-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">filed</a> a lawsuit against the school alleging the school has allowed a climate of anti-Semitism to fester on campus, leaving Jewish students feeling “under siege.” Before that, a law firm <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2023/10/11/us/nyu-law-harvard-hamas-israel.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rescinded</a> its job offer to an NYU law student who made what the firms said were “inflammatory comments” about Hamas’ attack.
At Harvard University, the student Palestine Solidarity Committee and 30 other student groups signed a statement that said Israel’s “apartheid regime is the only one to blame” for Hamas’ attacks. At least 10 CEOs and other executives <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/major-ceos-back-call-not-to-hire-pro-hamas-harvard-students" target="_blank" rel="noopener">backed</a> a call last month not to hire the students who signed onto that letter.

American universities have become factories that produce “ignorant activists” instead of educated citizens after decades of radical leftists getting into faculty positions on campuses across the country, Michael Knowles said at Cornell University Monday night. 
Knowles spoke to a crowd of college students at the New York college hosted by the Young America’s Foundation as a group of around 60 Cornell students <a href="https://cornellsun.com/2023/11/06/students-gather-against-conservative-speaker-event-proceeds-uninterrupted/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gathered</a> outside Knowles’ speech to hold a “Vigil for Trans Lives” in protest. The Daily Wire host began his speech, titled “You, Me, and World War 3,” focusing on the radical leftism that has sprouted at major universities across the U.S.
“[T]he change of the American university — not just Cornell, not just the Ivy League, virtually all of them — from institutions of higher learning for producing educated citizens into radical indoctrination factories for producing ignorant activists, the new perspective is no coincidence: the radicals won the campus fights of the 1960s, and they now run those universities as ‘tenured radicals,’ to borrow a phrase from Roger Kimball.” 
The leftist takeover of the universities that started in the 1960s is evident even in how college faculty members describe themselves today, according to Knowles.
“Today, according to surveys, some 24% of college professors in the social sciences call themselves ‘radical.’ 21% call themselves ‘activists.’ 18% call themselves as ‘Marxist.’ The ratio of liberal to conservative professors, according to another survey, is 8:1 in poli-sci. It’s 17:1 in history departments; it’s 44:1 in sociology, 48:1 in English, and it’s 108:0 in race and gender studies.” 
Knowles then gave examples of radical leftists who had made it into the halls of prestigious universities after putting their radicalism on full display. 
“As my friend Chris Rufo pointed out in his excellent new book ‘America’s Cultural Revolution,’ the most prominent leaders of the radical student movement of the 1960s — I’m thinking of Bill Ayers, the leader of the Weather Underground … Angela Davis, a communist terrorist who plotted an attack, a kidnapping that led to the death of four people, including a judge — those people and many others ended up with cushy university sinecures.” 
“Meanwhile the radicalism spreads,” Knowles continued. “Yet again, on Cornell’s campus which just last week saw the arrest of a student who was threatening to kill all the Jews.”

A spokesperson from the university told The Daily Wire that students, faculty, and staff would instead observe a &#8220;community day.&#8221;
&#8220;No classes will be held, and faculty and staff will be excused from work, except for employees who provide essential services,&#8221; the spokesperson said in an email. &#8220;We hope that everyone will use this restorative time to take care of yourselves and reflect on how we can nurture the kind of caring, mutually supportive community that we all value.&#8221;
Jewish students on the university&#8217;s campus in Ithaca, New York, were put on high alert on Sunday night after at least six screenshots allegedly taken from the Greek Rank website displayed online threats from anonymous users who said &#8220;&#8216;israel&#8217; deserved 10/7&#8221; and &#8220;eliminate jewish living from cornell campus&#8221; to another user who claimed they would &#8220;shoot up 104 west.&#8221;
Within 48 hours, a Joint Terrorism Task Force <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cornell-student-faces-5-years-in-prison-after-allegedly-making-online-threats-to-jewish-students-on-campus" target="_blank" rel="noopener">identified</a> Patrick Dai, a junior student enrolled in the prestigious Cornell School of Engineering, as the suspect.
Dai, 21, originally from Pittsford, New York, was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on Tuesday, charging him with posting threats to kill or injure another using interstate communications, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney&#8217;s Office in the Northern District of New York.
The complaint against Dai alleges he posted threatening messages to the Cornell section of an online discussion site, which included calling for the deaths of Jewish people and carrying out a mass shooting of the 104 West building, which is a Cornell University dining hall that caters predominantly to Kosher diets, located next to the Cornell Jewish Center.
&#8220;In another post, Dai allegedly threatened to &#8216;stab&#8217; and &#8216;slit the throat&#8217; of any Jewish males he sees on campus, to rape and throw off a cliff any Jewish females, and to behead any Jewish babies,&#8221; authorities said in a news release. &#8220;In that same post, Dai threatened to &#8216;bring an assault rifle to campus and shoot all you pig jews.'&#8221;

Dai faces a maximum term of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and a term of supervised release of up to three years if convicted.
NBC News <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/cornell-university-cancels-classes-student-patrick-dai-was-accused-thr-rcna123306" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a> that Dai did not enter a plea on Wednesday when he appeared in federal court. Authorities assigned him a federal public defender and scheduled a preliminary hearing for November 15.

Even though it was unsubstantiated, it adds to the stress we are all feeling. Cornell Police continue to have an increased presence on campus, and especially in high-priority areas.&#8221;
Threats against Jewish communities in the U.S. continue to rise after the Israel-Hamas war entered its fourth week over the weekend, which has sparked a wave of anti-Semitism from supporters of Hamas.

Joel M. Malina, vice president for university relations at Cornell University, told The Daily Wire in an emailed statement that the Ivy League campus remains &#8220;shocked&#8221; and &#8220;condemn[s] these horrific, antisemitic threats and believe they should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.&#8221;
&#8220;We know that our campus community will continue to support one another in the days ahead,&#8221; Malina said. &#8220;Cornell Police will maintain its heightened security presence on campus as the university continues to focus on supporting the needs of our students, faculty and staff.&#8221;

&#8220;We can confirm that a subject has been identified as a suspect in the antisemitic threats made against our Jewish students on Sunday and is currently in custody,&#8221; Joel M. Cornell Hillel, a chapter of the self-described largest Jewish campus organization in the world, warned on social media for students and staff to avoid the 104 West building, which is home to the university&#8217;s Kosher Dining Hall and nearby the Center for Jewish Living, following the online threats.
&#8220;The Cornell University administration has been made aware of this concerning language, and the Cornell Police Department is monitoring the situation and is on site at 104West to provide additional security as a precaution,&#8221; officials for the group wrote in a statement.
According to the organization&#8217;s website, approximately 3,000 undergraduate and 500 graduate Jewish students attend Cornell, comprising 22% of the student body.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said Tuesday that state police had questioned &#8220;a person of interest&#8221; as part of the investigation.
&#8220;When I met with Cornell students yesterday, I promised them New York State would do everything possible to find the perpetrator who threatened a mass shooting and antisemitic violence on campus,&#8221; Hochul said in a <a href="https://www.governor.ny.gov/news/statement-governor-kathy-hochul-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news release</a>.
