Former <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a> Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/lori-lightfoot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Lori Lightfoot</a> is headed to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/harvard" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Harvard</a> University to teach about health policy and leadership.
The Ivy League university <a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/newsplus/lori-lightfoot-appointed-menschel-fellow-at-harvard-chan-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">confirmed</a> on Thursday that Lightfoot, who lost her bid for a second term as mayor this year, will serve as a senior leadership fellow this fall at the T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston.
“We believe our students will benefit from her experiences, insights and knowledge of leadership decision-making,&#8221; Eric Andersen, director of Senior Leadership Fellows Program at the school, <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/columnists/2023/6/1/23744640/former-chicago-mayor-lori-lightfoot-to-teach-at-harvard-t-h-chan-school-of-public-health" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told the Chicago Sun-Times</a>.
In a statement, Lightfoot said she looks forward to teaching about her experience leading the nation&#8217;s third-largest city during the COVID-19 pandemic.
&#8220;I&#8217;ll share specifics about the way we managed the COVID-19 public health crisis, and we&#8217;ll delve into how we approached the crisis as an avenue to address long standing public health equity challenges using data and science,&#8221; Lightfoot said. &#8220;I also look forward to being part of the community of scholars, intellectuals and students at such a world class institution.&#8221;
During her single four-year term as mayor, which ended last month when <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicago-welcomes-new-leftist-mayor-with-vision-of-a-safer-and-more-equitable-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">leftist Brandon Johnson</a> took over the role, Lightfoot made headlines for implementing <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicago-mayor-lori-lightfoot-issues-another-lockdown-advisory-demands-thanksgiving-plans-be-canceled" target="_blank" rel="noopener">strict lockdown</a> <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lori-lightfoot-claims-covid-regulations-prevented-tribute-for-fallen-chicago-cop-thats-not-true-medical-examiner-says" target="_blank" rel="noopener">measures</a> and her inability to put a stop to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/2023/03/01/politics/lori-lightfoot-chicago-mayor-race-crime/index.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">rampant crime in the Windy City</a>. <a href="https://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/newsplus/lori-lightfoot-appointed-menschel-fellow-at-harvard-chan-school/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Harvard Gazette</a> said her &#8220;accomplishments&#8221; includes &#8220;landmark ethics and good governance reforms, worker protection legislation, and key investments in education, public safety, and financial stability.&#8221;

After Lightfoot failed to secure a spot in the run-off contest in the mayoral election in late February, <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/lori-lightfoot-chicago-mayor-news-brandon-johnson/13196138/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ABC7 Chicago reported</a> that in an interview she pointed to the pandemic as well as <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/derek-chauvin-ex-minneapolis-cop-convicted-of-murdering-george-floyd-files-appeal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">George Floyd&#8217;s death</a> and violence that ensued as factors in her defeat.
&#8220;There&#8217;s a lot of anger, frustration and fear that is present, not only in Chicago, but across our country. And, the winds of dissension continue to blow at a furious pace,&#8221; Lightfoot said. &#8220;So, for me, the biggest challenge wasn&#8217;t some particular person&#8217;s name on the ballot. The biggest challenge was breaking through what I call that &#8216;anger bubble.'&#8221;
Appointed a Richard L. and Ronay A. Menschel Senior Leadership Fellow, Lightfoot is expected to start teaching a course tentatively titled “Health Policy and Leadership&#8221; in late August. <a href="https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/policy-translation-leadership-development/recent-menschel-fellows/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Others who have</a> become Menschel fellows include former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and former Boston Mayor Kim Janey.

Russia is blaming the Ukrainian government for a “kamikaze” drone attack on a wealthy Moscow neighborhood this morning. 
 Russian President Vladimir Putin called the incident a “terrorist” attack. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that the drones caused “insignificant damage,” but that the incident brought the war home to the streets of Moscow. Russia, for its part, claimed that it shot down five drones and prevented more damage from occurring. Ukraine has not taken responsibility for the attack and the White House has said it does not support attacks inside Russian territory. The incident comes just weeks after U.S. intelligence reported that Ukraine was likely responsible for a drone attack on the Kremlin in April.

Authorities are looking for answers after a brawl between two large groups in Hollywood, Florida, on Monday evening led to nine being wounded by gunfire. Sister Wilhemina Lancaster died in 2019, yet when her body was exhumed on May 18 by the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles, in Gower, Missouri, the sisters were shocked to find that her body had not decayed since her passing. Originally, her body was going to be moved to a new shrine, but she is now placed in a glass casket for viewing. 
Now, the masses are calling for Sister Wilhelmina to be made into a <a href="https://metrovoicenews.com/catholics-travel-to-small-missouri-town-to-view-incorrupt-body-of-dead-nun" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saint</a>. Since the beginning of the Catholic Church, there have been more than 250 incorrupt bodies of Catholic saints.

Two of the violent incidents happened not far from the home of new Democratic Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/brandon-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brandon Johnson</a>. Johnson blamed poverty and the lack of government programs in the Windy City.
&#8220;Poverty didn’t go away over the weekend,&#8221; he said. &#8220;When you understand that communities have been disinvested in and traumatized, that you’re seeing the manifestation of that trauma.”

The city of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a> was rocked by <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/gun-violence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">violence</a> over the holiday weekend as more than 40 people were wounded and 11 killed, the most deadly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/memorial-day" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Memorial Day</a> weekend in eight years. 
According <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/crime/2023/5/27/23739457/memorial-day-weekend-chicago-shootings-violence" target="_blank" rel="noopener">to a tally</a> from the Chicago Sun-Times, at least 45 people were injured in shootings or stabbings, while another 11 were killed. Two of the violent incidents happened not far from the home of new Democratic Mayor <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/brandon-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Brandon Johnson</a>. 
A woman was found dead from stab wounds two blocks from the mayor’s home, while another individual was injured in a shooting in his West Side neighborhood, according to the Sun-Times. It was the most people killed since 2015, though not the most injured. 
Multiple police officers worked on their days off due to the expected increase in violence over the weekend. 
Homicide victims included a 33-year-old unidentified man who was shot in the armpit, 35-year-old William Hair who was shot in the chest, 22-year-old Johnathan Salgado, a 35-year-old man who was shot in the face while standing on a sidewalk, an unidentified woman killed in a drive-by shooting, a 26-year-old shot in the back, and a 35-year-old man shot in the head while in his car. 
The incidents took place throughout the city, including the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, the Heart of Chicago neighborhood, the Little Village neighborhood, the Austin neighborhood, the Lake View neighborhood, West Garfield Park, and Woodlawn. 
Two non-fatal shooting incidents involved separate 2-year-olds. One involved a young girl accidentally injuring herself with a gun she found in the street, while the other involved a boy who was shot in the hand while playing in a bedroom. 
The deadly <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicagos-endless-summer-violence-34-shot-8-dead-so-far-this-memorial-day-weekend" target="_blank" rel="noopener">weekend comes as</a> Mayor Johnson is rolling out a safety program that includes having more police on the ground, an increase in peace safety officers on hand to de-escalate situations, and programs for Chicago’s youth.

“It’s going to take all of us, not just the police, not just city government, to ensure that our communities can live and thrive in peace and safety,” Johnson <a href="https://www.wbez.org/stories/mayor-brandon-johnson-unveils-safety-plan-for-memorial-day-weekend/d9eee800-fa61-484f-ba05-d49b1416d49d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> last week. “However you decide to spend your holiday weekend in Chicago, your safety is my top priority.”
Chicago was not the only place that experienced excessive violence over the holiday weekend. Nine people <a href="https://apnews.com/article/hollywood-florida-beach-shooting-93dda56246a69d8913f35349c52d83c5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">were injured</a> during a shooting at a beach in Hollywood, Florida. Those injured included children.

I felt something new on a recent international trip to Japan, something I&#8217;ve never felt in my travels to 23 countries across 5 continents. Something I&#8217;m not proud of as an American.
I felt that the United States, in critical areas, is not only not a world leader, but it&#8217;s not even a model anymore.
By the conclusion of every international journey, I&#8217;m reminded how lucky I am to have been born into such a miraculous society and ready, sometimes eager, to return to the United States.
It&#8217;s never one reason or the same reason. In Colombia, Mexico, Panama, and Tanzania, the scenes of urban and rural poverty are jarring. In South Africa, the decay and violence of Johannesburg are terrifying. Egypt and Jordan are beautiful in many ways but culturally backward in others. Russia (Moscow, especially) is suffocating in gloominess. Western Europe is a delight to visit but lacks vitality; it&#8217;s a stunning museum that pays homage to a once-vibrant civilization. 
In the U.S., we&#8217;re blessed with abundant space, resources, and options. Americans take for granted that every day the lights will turn on, the water will come out of the tap, the roads and highways will be open, the grocery shelves stocked, and the WiFi strong — among thousands of other blessings of modernity and competence that ensure most of us rarely have to think about the first two needs of the Maslow hierarchy — physiological and safety needs. 
But there&#8217;s more that makes America exceptional, of course. The U.S. attracts many immigrants whose material needs are met but who want more wealth, opportunity, freedom, creativity, culture, tolerance of risk, and adventure. 
As a tourist anywhere, Japan included, you only notice surface-level characteristics of the society, especially when you don&#8217;t speak the language. But what you see remains valid and relevant. In Japan, I saw a civilization that is functionally more competent and culturally healthier than America in several ways. 
With over 37 million people, Tokyo is the largest city in the world. It is vibrant, bustling, clean, and safe. Yet, have the political leaders of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles attempted to learn from the successes of a metropolis multiple times larger than theirs?
Working professionals dress professionally. The sea of black suits and white shirts is too uniform for my taste, but it beats showing up to work (even if work is at home) dressed for the gym or movie night.  
Every resident I interacted with — from service staff to passersby — was exceedingly courteous, respectful, and deferential by American standards. Service staff performs their work with a sense of care and duty. Each time I would hand my credit card to a cashier, she would receive it with cupped, outstretched hands as if I were giving her something precious and fragile. 
The public transit impresses. Tokyo&#8217;s subway system is a perfectly manageable labyrinth, and the Shinkansen, Japan&#8217;s bullet train, is stellar: fast (up to 200 MPH), comfortable, and practical — I used it to go from Tokyo to Kyoto to Hiroshima and back, over 1,000 miles round trip.
The Japanese do not seem to be infected with many Americans&#8217; reverence for victimhood. There are still Japanese alive who remember Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the even more destructive firebombing of Tokyo, and the humiliation of defeat and occupation. Four out of five Japanese believe the bombings were unjustified, according to a 2015 Gallup survey, and yet Japan holds America in high esteem. According to this 2022 survey, the Japanese are more supportive of dominant U.S. leadership and have a stronger opinion of U.S. democracy than Americans. American brands and stores are ubiquitous on the island, and Japan embraces being under the U.S. military&#8217;s umbrella with China and North Korea across the pond. The Japanese could hate America but don&#8217;t because they don&#8217;t see themselves as victims.
Americans are obsessed with their rights. Japanese with their obligations. Here, Japan has it right. People who prioritize what they owe others make society better than people who prioritize what they feel others owe them.
The American ideal is for the government to be preoccupied with not infringing on Americans&#8217; rights and for Americans to be concerned with fulfilling their obligations to one another. So, for example, drag queen story hour at the local library is not a fundamental American right — but protecting a child&#8217;s innocence is every adult&#8217;s obligation. 
The American ideal of a limited government with enumerated powers, of the people, by the people, and for the people is fit &#8220;only for a moral and religious people&#8221; and &#8220;wholly inadequate to the government of any other.&#8221;
I&#8217;m not moving to Japan. Even if I wanted to, Japan&#8217;s restrictive immigration laws would make it difficult (America could learn a thing or two there). But sometimes, it takes sleeping in someone else&#8217;s house to see how much you can improve about your own.

With Memorial Day upon us, summer is unofficially here and that almost certainly means another season of mayhem in the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Windy City</a>.
As of early Sunday morning, there were already 34 individuals shot with eight dead in Chicago over <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-shootings-shooting-breaking-news-today/13311022/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Memorial Day Weekend</a>.
The deadly weekend comes as Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is rolling out a safety program that includes having more police on the ground — which he&#8217;s accomplished by canceling days off, an increase in peace safety officers on hand to de-escalate situations, and events and programs for Chicago&#8217;s youth.
“It’s going to take all of us, not just the police, not just city government, to ensure that our communities can live and thrive in peace and safety,” Johnson <a href="https://www.wbez.org/stories/mayor-brandon-johnson-unveils-safety-plan-for-memorial-day-weekend/d9eee800-fa61-484f-ba05-d49b1416d49d" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> earlier this week. “However you decide to spend your holiday weekend in Chicago, your safety is my top priority.”
Last year, Chicago had its deadliest Memorial Day in half a decade. More than <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-weekend-shootings-at-least-48-shot-8-fatally-in-memorial-day-weekend-gun-violence/2845854/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">50 were shot and nine were killed</a>. Based on those numbers in comparison to this year, it doesn&#8217;t really seem like Johnson&#8217;s having a major impact in curbing crime. The weekend is not over, and Monday&#8217;s Memorial Day events will likely only bring more bloodshed.
Perhaps those inclined to commit such recklessness in Chicago don&#8217;t exactly fear Johnson or his soft-on-crime policies. Readers should keep in mind what happened after one <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bedlam-as-hundreds-of-teenagers-inundate-downtown-chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">April weekend</a> during which throngs of teenagers rampaged in the streets, jumped on cars, and beat up at least one innocent couple. Johnson effectively dismissed it as youthful shenanigans. He even compared the behavior to his young child jumping down the flight of stairs.
He even told the press that it &#8220;is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities.&#8221;
&#8220;Have you ever taught middle school? I have,&#8221; Johnson <a href="https://news.grabien.com/story-chicago-mayor-elect-defends-looters-demonizing-children-is-wrong" target="_blank" rel="noopener">asked</a>. &#8220;Have you ever raised young people? Do you understand the risk that young people take just because they&#8217;re young? Do you know that home plate is at the bottom of my stairs? I found that out when my son was sliding down those stairs trying to score.&#8221;
He went on to say that youngsters &#8220;make silly decisions! They do. So we have to make sure that we are investing to make sure that young people know that they are supported.&#8221;

Johnson&#8217;s solution to this disarray, as well as the near-daily shootings in Chicago, is more government funding for programs often unrelated to the enforcement of the law. He should be doing more to back the police so that they can feel confident they have the support needed and authority to actually enforce the law.
Of course, the real answer to this chaos can&#8217;t just come from government funding or improved policing. He must, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chaos-rules-in-chicago-the-lack-of-two-parent-homes-is-to-blame" target="_blank" rel="noopener">as this author has previously observed</a>, advocate that fathers stay in the home and encourage mothers and fathers to stay together. Fatherlessness in Chicago, especially in the black community, can explain much of the city&#8217;s crime.
Until a true shift toward focusing the family on happens, Chicago will likely have many more deadly summers.

A fight and a gunshot forced one of <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/chicago-welcomes-new-leftist-mayor-with-vision-of-a-safer-and-more-equitable-city" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chicago</a>’s most popular summer spots to close just hours after opening for Memorial Day weekend. 
Up to 100 teenagers gathered at the North Avenue beach around 1:30 p.m. on Friday when a fight broke out and someone fired a gun, according to police, Fox 32 <a href="https://www.fox32chicago.com/news/police-activity-north-avenue-beach-chicago-memorial-day-weekend">reported</a>. Video of the incident showed the group of teens taunting each other before a single gunshot is heard and the crowd disperses.
No one was injured by the gunfire, and police took a 15-year-old boy and one other person into custody. Chicago’s beaches, which stretch along Lake Michigan, officially opened at 11 a.m. Friday for the summer.

&#8220;The person who fired the weapon was observed,&#8221; Interim Chicago Police Department Supt. Fred Waller <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/north-avenue-beach-shot-fired/">said</a>. &#8220;He was taken into custody after a very, very short foot pursuit. Another subject in the same area was also observed running away with a weapon and he was taken into custody. Two weapons were recovered from him.&#8221;
Claire Nelson, who was at the beach with a group of friends from DePaul University, was only 200 feet away from the group of teenagers at the time of the fight and subsequent gunfire, CBS News <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/chicago/news/north-avenue-beach-shot-fired/">reported</a>. 
&#8220;We were really close, actually. We were having fun, and then all of a sudden these people started fighting, and the police came out, and then we heard a gunshot, and we just ran away to safety,&#8221; Nelson said.

The beach <a href="https://abc7chicago.com/chicago-beaches-north-avenue-beach-closed-shots-fired/13304202/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reopened</a> a few hours after the incident, and the 15-year-old was charged with two felonies: one count of aggravated assault discharge of a firearm and one count of criminal damage to property worth $500 to $10,000.
The city, led by its new leftist mayor Brandon Johnson, <a href="https://www.newsnationnow.com/us-news/midwest/chicago-peacekeeping-force-holiday-weekend/">prepared</a> for another weekend of potential violence by increasing police presence across the city and deploying 30 “peacekeepers” trained in de-escalation and conflict intervention. The Chicago PD also said it would be conducting bag checks of large gatherings at beaches. 
Last year in Chicago, nine people were killed and 40 were injured in <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/violent-weekend-starts-off-summer-in-chicago-with-at-least-five-dead">shootings</a> across the city over Memorial Day weekend.
“It’s going to take all of us not just the police, city government to ensure our communities can live and thrive in peace and safety,” Johnson said while discussing the city’s safety plan for the holiday weekend.

On July 13, 1966, a man broke into a Chicago, Illinois townhouse where nursing students lived. Inside, he found three nurses, and, using a gun and a knife, forced them into a bedroom where three other nurses already were.
The man used torn strips from bedsheets to tie up the six women’s hands and feet, using nautical knots. By midnight, three more nurses returned home and were tied up as well, <a href="https://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/a-mass-murderer-leaves-eight-women-dead" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to the History Channel</a>. 
In the early hours of the morning on July 14, the man robbed the women and began taking them one by one into different rooms of the house, where he stabbed and strangled them to death. One woman was raped before she was killed. The other women, still scared and tied up in one of the bedrooms, could hear the muffled screams of their roommates as they were murdered.
One student, Corazon Amurao, hid under a bed, and was lucky to survive when the murderer lost track of how many women remained in the house. She waited until 6 a.m. before coming out from under the bed, and then crawled onto a second-story ledge and called for help. When police arrived, Amurao provided a detailed description of the attacker, and by the next morning, the sketch of the man believed responsible was on the front page of every local newspaper.

On the night of July 15, Richard Speck was drinking with a drifter named Claude Lunsford and another man near the Starr Hotel, where Speck and Lunsford were staying at the time. The next day, Lunsford saw the sketch in the newspaper and recognized Speck. So, he called the police, but the police didn’t respond.
Speck, apparently seeing his own face in the newspapers, slashed his right wrist and left elbow on July 16 in an attempt to kill himself. The hotel desk clerk called in an emergency around midnight that night, and Spec was taken to Cook County Hospital in the wee hours of July 17. There, Dr. LeRoy Smith recognized Speck from his “Born To Raise Hell” tattoo described in the newspapers about the killings. The police arrived and arrested Speck.
At the time Speck was arrested, the landmark <a href="https://www.uscourts.gov/educational-resources/educational-activities/facts-and-case-summary-miranda-v-arizona" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Miranda</a> decision had just been made, with law enforcement offices across the country unsure how to proceed. Because of this, Speck wasn’t questioned until three weeks after his arrest.
Speck had a lengthy criminal record prior to the murders of eight nurses in Chicago, beginning in Dallas, Texas. He started drinking at the age of 12, and was first arrested in 1955 at the age of 13 for trespassing. Over the next eight years, he racked up dozens more arrests for misdemeanors. He was in jail for disturbing the peace when his daughter, Robbie Lyn Speck, was born in 1962.
In 1963, when Speck was 21, he was sentenced to three years in prison for forgery and burglary, but he was paroled 16 months later in 1965. He immediately returned to committing crimes, getting arrested a week after his release for attacking a woman with a carving knife, but ran away when the woman screamed. He was convicted this time of aggravated assault and sentenced to 16 months to run concurrently with his parole violation.
Six months later, an error led to Speck being released early, and he managed to work three months as a truck driver for a meat company before getting fired. In January 1966, Speck’s estranged wife, whom he married when she was 16 after knowing her for three weeks, filed for divorce. Also in January, Speck stabbed a man during a fight at a bar. His aggravated assault charge was reduced to disturbing the peace, allowing him to pay a $10 fine and spend three days in jail for failing to pay it.
In March 1966, Speck bought an old car and robbed a grocery store for 70 cartons of cigarettes. He sold the cigarettes out of the trunk of the car in the grocery store’s parking lot before abandoning the vehicle. A warrant was issued for his arrest, but Speck’s sister took him to the bus station to board a train for Chicago, Illinois.
He bounced around between family members in the early days of his life in Chicago, before moving across the state into a hotel in Monmouth, IL. While bar hopping in nearby Gulfport, Speck and some acquaintances were detained after Speck allegedly threatened a man in a bar with a knife.
In early April 1966, a 65-year-old woman was raped and robbed and a 32-year-old woman was found dead in an empty hog house behind Frank’s Place, a tavern owned by Speck’s brother-in-law. Speck was briefly questioned by police and he was asked to stay in Monmouth for further questioning, but when police showed up to question him again, he was gone. They found items stolen from the 65-year-old woman’s house and two other burglaries.

Speck then moved in with his sister in Northwest Chicago and began working as a Merchant Marine, but his first voyage was cut short after he developed appendicitis. When he was released from the hospital, he returned to working on a ship until he was dismissed after fighting with one of the boat’s officers.
After failing to find work on another ship, Speck left his sister’s house and moved into a hotel on July 13, 1966, where he began drinking. After drinking at several bars, he attacked a 53-year-old woman at knifepoint before taking her to his room, raping her, and robbing her. Among the items he stole was a handgun. He left her house and ate dinner, returning to drink at the hotel bar until 10:20 p.m. before walking to the nurses’ townhouse and murdering Gloria Davy, Suzanne Farris, Merlita Gargullo, Mary Ann Jordan, Patricia Matusek, Valentina Pasion, Nina Jo Schmale, and Pamela Wilkening.
Speck claimed he didn’t remember killing the nursing students, but he had previously confessed to the crime while he was in the Cook County Hospital following his suicide attempt. The doctor to whom he confessed, however, couldn’t testify because Speck had been sedated when he made the statements.
Speck’s trial began on April 3, 1967. Corazon Amurao, the surviving nursing student, identified Speck as the killer, and fingerprints found at the scene were matched to Speck. After just 49 minutes of deliberation, a jury found Speck guilty and recommended the death penalty.

On June 28, 1971, the U.S. Supreme Court reversed Speck’s death penalty due to jurors being excluded who did not support capital punishment. Speck was resentenced to eight consecutive sentenced of 50 to 150 years for a total of 400 to 1,200 years in prison.
In 1978, Speck publicly confessed to the murders while speaking to a columnist for the Chicago Tribune.
In 1991, he died of a heart attack at the age of 49.

President Joe Biden’s <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/topic/border-crisis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">border crisis</a> has undermined one of the Left’s most treasured virtue-signaling policies: sanctuary cities.
Blue cities that were so eager just a few years ago to declare themselves sanctuaries for illegal migrants are now reaping what they sowed as floods of people arrive, needing food and shelter and draining city resources.
The crisis has quickly worsened since Title 42 expired less than two weeks ago, snowballing into an emergency even Democrats can no longer ignore. Title 42 had allowed border authorities to quickly expel migrants at the border over COVID concerns.
Red state governors in border states like Texas are shipping migrants to sanctuary cities by the hundreds, saying, “You wanted them. You take them.”
Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott has bused <a href="https://www.texastribune.org/2023/05/18/greg-abbott-denver-immigrant-buses/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 19,000</a> migrants to New York, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Denver, and Philadelphia, all Democrat-run cities. Florida GOP Governor Ron DeSantis famously sent a bus of migrants to Martha’s Vineyard, the Massachusetts haven for the uber-wealthy.
In New York City, which has allowed in <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/eric-adams-migrant-crisis-new-york-city-face-the-nation/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more than 70,000</a> migrants in recent months, Democratic Mayor Eric Adams is complaining that they are costing the city an unsustainable fortune, even with federal aid from the Biden administration.
&#8220;We&#8217;ve spent over $1 billion. We&#8217;re projected to spend close to $4.3 billion, if not more. When you look at the price tag, $30 million comes nowhere near what this city is paying for a national problem,&#8221; Adams <a href="https://abc7ny.com/nyc-migrants-work-authorization-asylum-seekers-roosevelt-hotel/13282585/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
The city has taken over more than 150 hotels to shelter more than 41,000 asylum seekers, in some cases <a href="https://abc7ny.com/nyc-migrants-work-authorization-asylum-seekers-roosevelt-hotel/13282585/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">causing</a> paying customers to lose their reservations. Adams and Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul are also calling for expedited work authorizations for migrants in New York.
The border crisis has also <a href="https://www.nydailynews.com/news/politics/us-elections-government/ny-white-house-anger-eric-adams-migrant-criis-cost-democrats-20230521-afeyenilpzcwtnjmoyw7ec654y-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">caused</a> a rift between Adams and the White House. Biden aides are reportedly roiled that Adams said the “national government has turned its back” on New York City and warned that the border crisis could hurt Democrats at the polls.
Just a few miles away on Long Island, Suffolk County lawmakers are trying to block the mayor from foisting the asylum seekers on them.
“We here in Suffolk County are 2,000 miles from the southern border, but we are to become a border county because of the Biden administration’s failed border policies and the sanctuary city policies of New York City,” <a href="https://twitter.com/ImMeme0/status/1660428689782317058">said</a> eastern Long Island Rep. Nick LaLota (R-NY) on Sunday at a press conference.
“I say to the mayor of New York City, sir, put your money where your mouth is,” LaLota said.
Philadelphia is <a href="https://6abc.com/philadelphia-migrants-asylum-seekers-venezuela-new-sanctuary-movement-of-del-rio-texas/13231693/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">scrambling</a> to metabolize hundreds of migrants being bused into the city as well, some sent by Texas.
Philadelphia Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney blasted the Texas governor, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFXQcLt7STQ&amp;t=65s" target="_blank" rel="noopener">saying</a> his “cruel and racist policies” are “sad and outrageous,” and Texas is using migrants as “pawns to shamelessly push their warped political agenda.”
Kenney was in a slightly better mood in 2018 when he <a href="https://www.phillymag.com/news/2018/06/07/sanctuary-city-kenney-sessions/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">did a little dance</a> after a federal judge ruled Philadelphia could remain a sanctuary city and get $1.5 million in federal funding.
In Chicago, migrants have <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/migrants-sleep-chicago-police-stations-shelters-strain-2023-05-18/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">slept</a> on the floors of police stations and overcrowded city shelters as city officials scramble to figure out what to do with them.
The situation is an immediate emergency for Chicago’s new Democratic mayor, Brandon Johnson, who took office last week. Chicago’s freshly ousted mayor, Lori Lightfoot, <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-suburb-says-it-didnt-know-dozens-of-migrants-were-being-sent-from-chicago-as-more-buses-arrived-in-city/2934565/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">upset</a> residents when she bused dozens of illegal migrants out of the city into a nearby suburb. Johnson has not said exactly how he plans to deal with the migrants long-term, but the mayor’s office said 400 migrants might be <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2023/5/19/23730372/wright-college-house-migrants-chicago-asylum-seeker" target="_blank" rel="noopener">housed</a> at a local college over the summer.
Denver has several hundred migrants arriving daily, most from Central and South America. Last week, the sanctuary city <a href="https://www.axios.com/local/denver/2023/05/11/denver-migrant-response-hits-emergency-mode" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ramped up</a> its response to the emergency level. About 1,000 people are now staying in four shelters across the city.
So far, Denver has spent $15.7 million on migrants since December, with less than $250,000 in help from the federal government.
San Francisco <a href="https://www.kqed.org/news/11941173/sf-supervisors-split-on-details-of-citys-sanctuary-policy-shielding-immigrants-from-deportation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dug</a> its heels in on its sanctuary city status earlier this year, even as federal authorities sought an exception for two illegal immigrants, one accused of murder and one of sexually abusing young children.
Meanwhile, Bay Area humanitarian groups are <a href="https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/bay-area-groups-request-help-immigrants-title-42/3233656/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">begging</a> for help as they prepare for a wave of migrants.
There are at least <a href="https://cis.org/Map-Sanctuary-Cities-Counties-and-States" target="_blank" rel="noopener">181 sanctuary cities</a> and counties in 11 states, including California, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, Connecticut, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Mexico, and Vermont.
So far, major cities are dealing with the brunt of the border crisis. Soon though, smaller cities and suburbs could also feel the pressure when big cities inevitably relocate migrants, as Chicago started to do.
In the meantime, Democratic governors and mayors are blaming everyone but themselves for the crisis.

Leftist allies of Chicago&#8217;s new Mayor Brandon Johnson have proposed a budget plan that would tax the rich and businesses, and would effectively defund police in a city already nearly crippled by crime.
The <a href="https://acrecampaigns.org/research_post/first-we-get-the-money/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">budget plan</a> was proposed by ACRE, the Action Center on Race and the Economy, in conjunction with the People&#8217;s Unity Platform and is titled &#8220;$12 Billion for a Just Chicago.&#8221; The first page begins with step one of the plan: &#8220;First we get the money.&#8221;

The <a href="https://acrecampaigns.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/05/First-We-Get-the-Money.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">budget plan</a> calls for $12 billion in new taxes — which would reportedly come in part from reducing the Chicago Police Department <a href="https://news.wttw.com/2023/01/02/sparing-residents-tax-hikes-months-election-chicago-s-2023-budget-takes-effect#:~:text=The%20Chicago%20Police%20Department%27s%20budget,a%20total%20of%20%241.94%20billion." target="_blank" rel="noopener">budget</a> ($1.94 billion in 2023) by 9%, or approximately $175 million. The city would also eliminate all current police department vacancies – which, <a href="https://chicago.suntimes.com/city-hall/2022/8/31/23331411/cpd-chicago-police-vacancies-detectives" target="_blank" rel="noopener">in August of 2022</a>, amounted to over 900 patrol officer vacancies and over 100 detective vacancies.
Corporations — or any business with at least 50 employees — would face a &#8220;head tax&#8221; of $33 per employee, which the report estimated would bring in $106 million in new revenue. Anyone making more than $100,000 would face an additional 3.5% income tax – totaling approximately $1.2 billion. The city&#8217;s top 10% of earners would also get hit with a .4% wealth tax – amounting to $960 million annually.
A real estate transfer tax on transactions of over $1 million — which the report states would generate $1.63 million in revenue — would be used to fund housing projects that the report claims would &#8220;eliminate homelessness.&#8221;
The plan also demanded that Chicago refuse to use any federal money to fund law enforcement or Wall Street interests, arguing that investing that money in public housing would contribute more to community safety.
The conclusion, according to ACRE, was that the city&#8217;s budget had to be approached from a morality standpoint – and that previous budgets had not done so to their satisfaction.

He <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leftist-chicago-mayoral-candidate-defeats-moderate-rival-will-succeed-lori-lightfoot" target="_blank" rel="noopener">defeated</a> moderate rival and former Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas in April to succeed the <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/lori-lightfoot-blames-racism-right-wing-forces-for-devastating-loss-in-chicago-i-leave-my-office-with-my-head-held-high" target="_blank" rel="noopener">incumbent Lori Lightfoot</a> after she was beaten in the February primary election.
Johnson managed to overcome criticism for his past support of the &#8220;defund the police&#8221; movement while touting a <a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/clarence-page-mayor-elect-brandon-100000992.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;holistic&#8221; approach</a> to public safety.
That point of view will be tested as Chicago, the nation&#8217;s third-most populous city, continues to make national headlines for its violent crime. Seven people were killed and 20 others were wounded just this past weekend, <a href="https://www.nbcchicago.com/news/local/chicago-weekend-gun-violence-7-killed-5-teens-among-20-wounded/3141356/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to reports</a>.

&#8220;Too many Chicagoans fear for their safety when they walk down the street to get groceries or drive to the gas station, because our city’s homicide and violent crime rates have consistently outpaced our peer cities,&#8221; Johnson said in <a href="https://twitter.com/Brandon4Chicago/status/1658157347959603201" target="_blank" rel="noopener">a tweet thread</a> on Monday.
In that thread, Johnson also envisioned making the city &#8220;the economic marvel of our state, the Midwest, and this nation.&#8221; This, too, will present a challenge as there are significant disparities in economic opportunity from neighborhood to neighborhood, and particularly low levels of wealth among households with people of color, as shown in an Urban Institute <a href="https://www.urban.org/urban-wire/chicago-neighborhoods-have-stark-differences-economic-opportunity#:~:text=Chicago%20typifies%20wealth%20inequity%2C%20with,wealth%20of%20%241%2C500%20or%20less." target="_blank" rel="noopener">study released in 2022</a>.
Other priorities for the mayor, as seen listed on Johnson&#8217;s <a href="https://www.brandonforchicago.com/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">campaign website</a>, include affordable housing, &#8220;healthcare for all,&#8221; and fully-funded schools.

The public got a taste of how Johnson will tackle public safety when he reacted to large crowds of rowdy teenagers <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/bedlam-as-hundreds-of-teenagers-inundate-downtown-chicago" target="_blank" rel="noopener">flooding the streets</a> of downtown Chicago last month.
Johnson said he did not &#8220;condone the destructive activity&#8221; witnessed at that time, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/leftist-chicago-mayor-elect-after-teenagers-violent-rampage-through-city-dont-demonize-them" target="_blank" rel="noopener">but stressed</a> that it &#8220;is not constructive to demonize youth who have otherwise been starved of opportunities in their own communities.”

The mayor said he is already coordinating with Fred Waller, Chicago&#8217;s new interim police superintendent, to map out ways to quell violence in the city, <a href="https://www.audacy.com/wbbm780/news/local/violence-in-chicago-a-high-priority-for-brandon-johnson" target="_blank" rel="noopener">according to WBBM radio</a>.
“It’s something that I’ve been focusing on throughout my entire political career,” Johnson said. “I’m raising a family in Chicago. I think about the violence that happens in the city of Chicago on a daily basis.”
Johnson faces the major task of preparing the city to host <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/democrats-choose-crime-ridden-city-for-2024-convention" target="_blank" rel="noopener">the 2024 Democratic National Convention</a>, which is set to be held August 19-22 and attract visitors from around the country.

Residents of Chicago&#8217;s South Shore community were not thrilled when they learned that the city planned to take in some 250 <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/this-is-a-free-for-all-nyc-hotel-worker-describes-chaos-as-migrants-have-trashed-rooms-brought-in-drugs" target="_blank" rel="noopener">illegal immigrants</a> – a number that they said was &#8220;fluid&#8221; and could increase over time.
During a public meeting addressing the situation, residents raised questions regarding crime and safety and asked why the city had not bothered to consult the people who lived in the community before making plans to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/migrants-ditch-visas-and-identification-papers-in-sea-of-trash-just-after-illegal-crossing" target="_blank" rel="noopener">bring more people in</a>.

The meeting began with Chicago&#8217;s Chief Engagement Officer Nubia William, who tried to impress upon the residents that they were trying to help mitigate a humanitarian crisis — but the crowd began to shout her down before she could even finish her first sentence.
&#8220;What&#8217;s important is that we really establish that this is a humanitarian crisis —&#8221; she began, but people shouting in the crowd interrupted her.
When the time came for public comments on the issue, the residents and city leaders who chose to speak made it clear that they did not approve of the city&#8217;s plan.
&#8220;While this crisis may constitute an emergency for the city of Chicago, it does not constitute an emergency for the South Shore community,&#8221; 8th Ward Alderwoman Michelle Harris said, prompting cheers and applause from the crowd.
City leaders attempted to explain that the plan included converting an old high school building into a &#8220;respite center&#8221; for illegal immigrants, but the residents were not receptive to any of the officials&#8217; explanations.
&#8220;When it comes to the total number of people at South Shore at any given point in time, it is fluid,&#8221; one official said. &#8220;We&#8217;d start with 250, 500.&#8221;

The crowd erupted in response, and then a resident stepped up to the microphone. &#8220;How could you do that without consulting us?&#8221; she asked, and another added, &#8220;I am concerned with safety in the area.&#8221;
Chicago has been a self-proclaimed &#8220;<a href="https://news.wttw.com/2023/01/14/welcome-chicago-exploring-what-it-means-be-sanctuary-city#:~:text=Chicago%27s%20history%20as%20a%20self,from%20enforcing%20federal%20immigration%20laws." target="_blank" rel="noopener">sanctuary city</a>&#8221; – where city officials are not permitted to enforce federal immigration laws – since former Mayor Harold Washington first issued an executive order to that effect in 1985. However, the recent surge in migrants arriving in Chicago has led to police departments being overwhelmed and outgoing Democratic Mayor Lori Lightfoot declaring a <a href="https://www.chicagotribune.com/politics/ct-chicago-migrant-costs-city-budget-20230509-dia2saihtbekvoqatzrkiffcwa-story.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">state of emergency</a>. &#8220;We&#8217;ve reached a breaking point,&#8221; she said.

Assistant State Attorney Jason Poje, a 20-year veteran prosecutor in Chicago, torched George Soros-backed Cook County State&#8217;s Attorney Kim Foxx this month in his resignation letter and slammed the city&#8217;s &#8220;stupid&#8221; leaders who he said had set the city &#8220;on a course to disaster.&#8221;
The Chicago Contrarian, which <a href="https://www.chicagocontrarian.com/blog/departing-cook-county-prosecutor-upbraids-kim-foxx-in-searing-exit-letter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">obtained</a> a copy of Poje&#8217;s exit email, said that Poje had been described by a former colleague as &#8220;one of the hardest working men I have ever worked with,&#8221; and had an excellent reputation as an ASA.
The publication noted that his email reserved &#8220;special ire for Kim Foxx,&#8221; even though he declined to use her name.
‍&#8221;After 20 years, I always kind of figured an email like this would start with &#8216;It is with a heavy heart that I leave &#8230; &#8216; The truth is, I can&#8217;t get out of here fast enough,&#8221; he began.
He said that he was &#8220;truly honored&#8221; to work every day on behalf of victims of crime and that the opportunity &#8220;has been a gift for which I have no words to explain the extent of my gratitude.&#8221;
&#8220;And yet, I&#8217;m leaving. Why could that be?&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;The simple fact is that this State and County have set themselves on a course to disaster. And the worst part is that the agency for whom I work has backed literally every policy change that has the predictable, and predicted, outcome of more crime and more people getting hurt.&#8221;
&#8220;Bond reform designed to make sure no one stays in jail while their cases are pending with no safety net to handle more criminals on the streets, shorter parole periods, lower sentences for repeat offenders, the malicious and unnecessary prosecution of law enforcement officers, the overuse of diversion programs, intentionally not pursuing prosecutions for crimes lawfully on the books after being passed by our legislature and signed by a governor, all of the so-called reforms have had a direct negative impact, with consequences that will last for a generation,&#8221; he continued.
&#8220;Many years ago, my family found a nice corner of the suburbs,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Now my son, who is only 5, hears gunfire while playing at our neighborhood park, and a drug dealer is open-air selling behind my house (the second one in two years). If it were just me to consider, I&#8217;d stick it out. I&#8217;ve been through enough stupid State&#8217;s Attorney policies before. But this Office&#8217;s complete failure to even think for a moment before rushing into one popular political agenda after another has put my family directly in harm&#8217;s way.&#8221;

Poje said woke prosecutors suffered a &#8220;from a fundamental misunderstanding&#8221; of what their job is, which he said was &#8220;an obligation to fight like hell on behalf of the People.&#8221;
Instead, he said, those same prosecutors have decided &#8220;it&#8217;s worth risking citizens&#8217; lives to have a little social experiment&#8221; and that the result have been &#8220;an increase in crime of all kinds, businesses and families pulling up the stakes, and the bodies piling up; the whole time with a State&#8217;s Attorney who insists there is nothing to see here, and if there is, it must be someone else&#8217;s fault.&#8221;
&#8220;And then they wonder why they cannot retain experienced prosecutors or even hire new ones &#8230; it&#8217;s because any true prosecutor recognizes the importance of this balance, and they will not be permitted to be a prosecutor under this administration,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;I will not raise my son here. I am fortunate to have the means to escape, so my entire family is leaving the State of Illinois. I grew up here, my family and friends are here, and yet my own employer has turned it into a place from which I am no longer proud to be, and in which my son is not safe.&#8221;
