White House Homeland Security Advisor Stephen Miller fired back after a 60 Minutes correspondent accused CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss of yanking a story about the Trump administration’s deportation of hundreds of immigrants to CECOT for “political reasons.”
“This is another pathetic 60 Minutes hatchet job. They are trying to tell sob stories about Tren de Aragua gang members who drill holes in people’s hands, who rape and murder little girls?” Miller <a href="https://grabien.com/story?id=562966&amp;utm_source=cliplist&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=cliplist20251224&amp;utm_content=story562966">said</a>.
“You actually have somebody, from the outside, new, who’s trying to actually act like an adult over at 60 Minutes and say, ‘Hey, wait a minute, you failed to talk to the administration, you failed to put in any sort of context, whatsoever, for the story, and so she’s decided to pause the story and now there’s an open revolt at 60 Minutes,” Fox News host Charles Hurt said to Miller. “First of all, were you contacted at all about this package, and what do you make of all of it?”
“I don’t remember anybody reaching out to me,” Miller replied. “Of course, as you know people put things at the comms inboxes and general feedback comments, but I don’t remember getting anything.”
“But more fundamentally, this is another pathetic 60 Minutes hatchet job,” he continued. “They are trying to tell sob stories about Tren de Aragua gang members who drill holes in people’s hands, who rape and murder little girls? This is the gang who kidnapped, sexually assaulted and murdered Jocelyn Nungaray. Remember her? That precious 12-year-old girl from Texas who was taken from her mom and went through horrors none of us can imagine?”
“And you have these 60 Minute producers who are living in comfort and security in their West End condos trying to make us feel sympathetic for these monsters?” he asked rhetorically. “Have you seen the tattoos, the face tattoos, the body tattoos on these killers? Would one 60 Minutes producer or writer agree to spend 30 minutes — I’ll make a deal. We will pick one person at random that we sent to CECOT, just a random lottery drawing, and they will spend one day, overnight, in your apartment.”
“Who is taking that deal at 60 Minutes? Nobody, because they know that these are monsters who got exactly what they deserved,” he declared. “Because under President Trump, we are not going to let little girls get raped and murdered anymore. And every one of those producers at 60 Minutes engaged in this revolt, fire them. Clean house, fire them. That’s what I say, Charlie.”
“And yet, somehow, they’re the compassionate ones and you’re the mean ones. But we’re glad you&#8217;re the mean ones and getting the job done,” Hurt concluded.
“I held that story because it was not ready,” Weiss <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/22/business/media/cbs-news-bari-weiss-60-minutes.html">said</a>, adding that the story had been reported by other news organizations. “The public knows that Venezuelans have been subjected to horrific treatment in this prison.”

“The data we present paints an incongruent picture. Of the 252 Venezuelans sent to CECOT, we say nearly half have no criminal histories. In other words, more than half do have criminal histories. We should spend a beat explaining this,” Weiss said. “We then say that only 8 of the 252 have been sentenced in America for violent offenses. But what about charged? My point is that we should include as much as we can possibly know and understand about these individuals.”

In a five-point memo sent to CBS News staff on Sunday, Editor-in-Chief Bari Weiss laid out each of her reasons for <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/cbs-news-pulls-60-minutes-segment-on-notorious-el-salvador-prison-needed-additional-reporting">postponing</a> a &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; segment on the Salvadoran prison where the Trump administration has sent hundreds of illegal immigrants.
Weiss prevented the segment on El Salvador&#8217;s CECOT prison from airing on Sunday over concerns that the piece lacked important information, such as &#8220;the Trump administration&#8217;s argument for why it sent 252 Venezuelans to CECOT.&#8221;
The segment, spearheaded by CBS News journalist Sharyn Alfonsi, focused on interviews with some of the illegal immigrants who were sent to CECOT and have since been released. After Weiss pulled the story from Sunday&#8217;s lineup, Alfonsi claimed that it was for &#8220;political&#8221; reasons, arguing that if they hold a story because the government has not commented on it, they are becoming a “stenographer for the state.”
Weiss, however, argued that the segment did not attempt to go deep enough to present its viewers &#8220;with the full context they need to assess the story.&#8221; In the first point her <a href="https://x.com/thesimonetti/status/2003142908854313225">memo</a>, Weiss argued that other legacy media networks had already extensively covered the &#8220;horrific conditions&#8221; at the Salvadoran prison and CBS News needed to do more to &#8220;advance&#8221; the story to justify a &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; segment.
&#8220;Last month, many outlets, most notably The New York Times, exposed the horrific conditions at CECOT. The segment reportedly focused on highlighting the “brutal and torturous conditions” endured by those sent to CECOT. Despite CBS News pulling the segment domestically, it aired briefly in Canada and then was shared online.
Weiss urged &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; producers to &#8220;push harder&#8221; to set up interviews Trump administration officials, such as adviser Stephen Miller and border czar Tom Homan.

Weiss concluded by telling the staff that CBS News should better explain &#8220;the legal rationale by which the administration detained and deported these 252 Venezuelans to CECOT.&#8221;
&#8220;It’s not as simple as Trump invoking the Alien Enemies Act and being able to deport them immediately. And that isn’t the administration’s argument. The admin has argued in court that detainees are due &#8216;judicial review&#8217;—and we should explain this, with a voice arguing that Trump is exceeding his authority under the relevant statute, and another arguing that he’s operating within the bounds of his authority,&#8221; Weiss argued. &#8220;There’s a genuine debate here.&#8221;
CBS News said on Sunday that the CECOT segment would air at a later date.

A &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; segment on the notorious CECOT prison in El Salvador, where the Trump administration has sent hundreds of illegal immigrants, was postponed by CBS News on Sunday, sparking controversy within the newsroom now led by Bari Weiss.

Democrats and the legacy media have focused much of their criticism of Trump&#8217;s massive deportation operation on the Salvadoran prison, where Trump has sent planeloads of people. The prison is used by El Salvador&#8217;s right-wing president, Nayib Bukele, to hold violent gang members and drug traffickers. Earlier this year, Bukele agreed to take in illegal immigrants deported by the Trump administration and place them in CECOT.
Weiss, who became CBS News editor-in-chief in October, was concerned about apparent bias in the &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; CECOT piece and suggested adding an interview with a White House official, such as Stephen Miller, <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/21/business/60-minutes-trump-bari-weiss.html">according</a> to The New York Times. In a statement on Sunday, Weiss said that it&#8217;s common to hold stories and segments that &#8220;lack sufficient context&#8221; or &#8220;are missing critical voices.&#8221; She added that she looks forward to airing the CECOT prison segment &#8220;when it&#8217;s ready.&#8221;
“My job is to make sure that all stories we publish are the best they can be,” she said.
Alfonsi, however, called the last-minute decision to pull the segment from Sunday&#8217;s show &#8220;political,&#8221; saying that the segment had already undergone extensive fact-checking and legal review.
“It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now, after every rigorous internal check has been met, is not an editorial decision, it is a political one,” Alfonsi wrote. The journalist said that they had reached out to the Trump administration for comment, arguing that if they hold a story because the government has not commented on it, they are becoming a &#8220;stenographer for the state.&#8221;

President Donald Trump on Monday accused  Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene of being a &#8220;jilted&#8221; traitor after the Georgia Republican said Trump&#8217;s policies were not &#8220;America First&#8221; during an interview on &#8220;60 Minutes.&#8221;
Trump said that Greene was no longer MAGA or America First because of her shifting policy views. In recent weeks, Greene has become increasingly critical of Trump. She has also announced plans to step down in January, with over a year left on her term as a congresswoman.
&#8220;The only reason Marjorie &#8216;Traitor&#8217; Brown (Green turns Brown under stress!) went BAD is that she was JILTED by the President of the United States (Certainly not the first time she has been jilted!). Too much work, not enough time, and her ideas are, NOW, really BAD &#8211; She sort of reminds me of a Rotten Apple! During the interview released Sunday, Greene said Trump was too focused on international issues rather than domestic policy.
&#8220;For an ‘America First’ president, the number one focus should have been domestic policy, and it wasn’t. And so, of course, I was critical, because those were my campaign promises,” Greene said. “Once we fix everything here, then fine, we’ll talk to the rest of the world.”
Greene was once a fierce defender of Trump, but recently clashed with the president over the release of the files related to Jeffrey Epstein. Trump has said that she became upset with him after he shared polling with her indicating she would perform poorly if she made a bid for the Senate.
Her resignation will lower the already tenuous Republican majority in the House, which currently sits at 220-213.
Trump said that he was upset that CBS News allowed the interview to air.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) suggested on Sunday evening that he might file a complaint with the Federal Communications Commission over the fact that President Donald Trump&#8217;s &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; interview with Norah O&#8217;Donnell was edited for time.
Citing the lawsuit filed by Trump over a &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; interview of former Vice President Kamala Harris — just days before the 2024 presidential election — Schumer claimed that he could simply copy and paste the complaint from that lawsuit.

President Donald Trump sat for an interview with CBS News anchor Norah O&#8217;Donnell on October 31 — which aired Sunday on &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; — and the pair <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/read-full-transcript-norah-odonnell-60-minutes-interview-with-president-trump/">discussed everything</a> from China and tariffs to former President Joe Biden, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and recent Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids.
For those who don&#8217;t spend their Sunday mornings glued to the television — and their Sunday afternoons attempting to dig through a week&#8217;s worth of network and cable news media spin — The Daily Wire has compiled a short summary of what you may have missed.
Trump himself teased the interview that aired Sunday evening, but he could not resist taking a jab at the network over the recent lawsuit — which he won — over a pre-election &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; interview with Harris. CBS parent company Paramount paid out millions after the parts of the interview that made the cut for the final broadcast were apparently edited to make Harris sound less incoherent.
Aboard Air Force One, Trump joked about the Harris interview as he previewed his own appearance. Saying that he&#8217;d likely be delayed but planned to watch his own interview, he added, &#8220;Let’s see if they treat me better than they treat other people. Although, I do say this, they treated Kamala very well. In fact, they changed her answers.&#8221;

In another segment that never aired, Trump once again brushed off the possibility that he would run for president again in 2028 — while taking aim at the 2020 election in the process.
&#8220;I like so many people. We have an unbelievable bench. We could run two people together. We have a great bench. So I don’t wanna start talking about elections. It’s too early. One thing I can tell you, the 2020 election was rigged,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And a lotta people say when it’s rigged you’re allowed to do it again. It was rigged. And it’s been caught. And they — and you see the same information that everybody else does. And it’s coming out now in spades. But with all of that, we have a great bench.&#8221;
In some of the comments that did make it to air, Trump scolded O&#8217;Donnell for asking him to reveal military plans with regard to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/i-cant-give-away-my-secrets-trump-scolds-cbs-host-for-asking-about-taiwan-and-military-plans">Taiwan</a>.
When the CBS anchor asked Trump why he wouldn&#8217;t just announce now what he might do if China were to invade Taiwan, the president balked.
&#8220;Well — I don’t want to give away — I can’t give away my secrets,” Trump shot back. “I don’t want to be one of these guys that tells you exactly what’s gonna happen if something happens. The other side knows, but — I’m not somebody that tells you everything because you’re asking me a question. But they understand what’s gonna happen. And — he has openly said, and his people have openly said at meetings, ‘We would never do anything while President Trump is president,’ because they know the consequences.”

President Donald Trump said that the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids carried out by his administration have not gone “far enough” because they have been hampered by &#8220;liberal judges.&#8221;
Trump, who campaigned on enacting mass deportations, defended his illegal immigration crackdown during an interview on “60 Minutes” broadcast on Sunday. When asked by CBS correspondent Norah O’Donnell about accusations of ICE tear-gassing neighborhoods and similar tactics, the president stood by his administration’s efforts. 
“I think they haven&#8217;t gone far enough because we&#8217;ve been held back by the judges, by the liberal judges that were put in by Biden and by Obama,” Trump said. 
Judges have blocked Trump&#8217;s efforts to <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-rips-judiciary-after-judge-nixes-mass-deportation-plan">deport</a> suspected Venezuelan gang members under the Alien Enemies Act and <a href="https://www.pbs.org/newshour/politics/federal-judge-halts-trump-effort-to-expand-speedy-deportations-of-detained-migrants">efforts</a> to carry out speedy deportations.
The Trump administration has conducted ICE raids in major cities across the country that have often prompted violent reactions. Over the summer, riots broke out in Los Angeles County after federal agents started making arrests in the area. In recent weeks, ICE has been active in the Chicago area, and federal efforts have faced major protests.
Trump reiterated that he supported ICE being aggressive when asked by O&#8217;Donnell about his administration&#8217;s tactics. 
“You have to get the people out. You know, you have to look at the people. Many of them are murderers. Many of them are people that were thrown out of their countries because they were, you know, criminals,” Trump said. “Many of them are people from jails and prisons. Many of them are people from, frankly, mental institutions. I feel badly about that, but they&#8217;re released from insane asylums. You know why? Because they&#8217;re killers.”
Trump said that more than 11,000 illegal immigrant murderers had been released into the country, and that over half of those had killed multiple people. He said the deportation efforts were focusing on getting the “bad ones” out of the country.

“We have to start off with a policy, and the policy has to be you came into the country illegally, you&#8217;re gonna go out,” Trump said. “We&#8217;re gonna work with you, and you&#8217;re gonna come back into our country legally. Because we have a lotta good people. We have some great people.”

President Donald Trump poked fun at New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani in an interview that aired on Sunday, claiming he is better-looking than the 34-year-old Democrat.
Trump sat for an interview with CBS News’ “60 Minutes,” his first interview with the program in five years. CBS correspondent Norah O&#8217;Donnell asked the president about Mamdani and for Trump’s thoughts on some comparisons that have been made between the two.
“Some people have compared him to a left-wing version of you. Charismatic. Breaking the old rules. What do you think about that?” O’Donnell asked.
“Well, I think I’m a much better-looking person than him,” replied Trump.
The president also called Mamdani a “communist.”

Trump voiced skepticism at Mamdani&#8217;s ability to lead New York City, if he were to win the election for mayor.
“I think he&#8217;s probably gonna make [former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio] look great. I think he will make de Blasio look like one of our great mayors. De Blasio was the worst mayor we&#8217;ve ever had,” <a href="https://www.cbsnews.com/news/read-full-transcript-norah-odonnell-60-minutes-interview-with-president-trump/">said</a> the president.
The interview was taped ahead of time and edited down for the slot in which it aired on Sunday evening. Trump <a href="https://x.com/EricLDaugh/status/1985126293298397196">told</a> reporters on Air Force One that he would try to watch it, though he would be “delayed.”
“Let’s see if they treat me better than they treat other people. Although, I do say this, they treated Kamala very well. In fact, they changed her answers,” said Trump.
In July, the president reached a $16 million settlement with Paramount, the parent company of CBS News, over a “60 Minutes” interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris during the 2024 presidential campaign. Trump has sued the company for $10 billion, alleging that CBS had edited the interview with Harris in a way to “tip the scales in favor of the Democratic party” during the election.
After the settlement, Trump’s legal team <a href="https://www.wsj.com/business/media/paramount-to-pay-16-million-to-settle-trump-lawsuit-over-60-minutes-interview-fd8dd21c?mod=hp_lead_pos3">called</a> it “another win for the American people as he, once again, holds the Fake News media accountable for their wrongdoing and deceit.”

Speaking on CBS’s “60 Minutes,” Trump negotiators Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff bluntly rebutted the charge of “genocide” that has been hurled at Israel as it fought its war of survival against the terrorist group Hamas.
Asked by host Lesley Stahl, “Would you say now, having been there, that it was genocide?,” Kushner declared, “No. No,” as Witkoff added, “Absolutely not. No, no, there was a war being fought.”
Kushner detailed what his team sees as the next phase after the cease-fire they arranged, which allowed Israeli hostages taken by Hamas to be returned.
“You can&#8217;t replace a corrupt government with another corrupt government,” Kushner said of Hamas. “So the goal here is to set up a transparent, good government. This can be very, very difficult to do, but we&#8217;re in the very early phases of trying to accomplish that.&#8221;
Stahl said, “Part of the plan is the reconstruction, the building, rebuilding of Gaza. And — you&#8217;re builders. You&#8217;ve been in real estate. As you said, it&#8217;s extremely complex. Tell us more about the plan and how much it&#8217;s gonna cost. Where is the money gonna come from? And who&#8217;s gonna award the contracts?”

“You know, the estimates are in the $50 billion range,” Witkoff replied. “It might be a little bit less; it might be a little bit more. I happen to think that that&#8217;s not a lot of money in that region. You have governments that are gonna jump on in &#8230; you&#8217;ll see European participation and so forth.”
“We have plans already,” he continued. “We have a master plan already. And by the way — and Jared&#8217;s been pushing this and we&#8217;re working together on it — and I think if the world saw the progress so far they&#8217;d be pretty impressed.”
“By the way, none of the reconstruction money is gonna be going in until you have terror-free zones, because nobody wants to invest this money into a place where it&#8217;s just gonna get destroyed again by terrorism,” Witkoff elaborated.
“If Gaza is starting to show signs of being peaceful and not a threat to Israel, there&#8217;s nothing more that Israel would like more than to not have to have a heavy military presence there,” Kushner said.
Stahl turned to the antisemitism that has mushroomed since the October 7 Hamas massacre of more than 1200 Israelis, saying, “It seems that this war has created a rash of antisemitism everywhere.”
“Well, that&#8217;s unacceptable,” Witkoff replied.
“And it&#8217;s even going on in the United States of America,” Stahl pointed out.
“Well, that&#8217;s my point,” Witkoff said, then emphasized that President Trump agreed, adding, “That&#8217;s unacceptable. And that&#8217;s the president&#8217;s position.&#8221;

CBS News and Stations President Wendy McMahon announced on Monday that she is resigning over disagreements with the network as CBS&#8217; parent company, Paramount, looks to settle a massive lawsuit brought by President Donald Trump.
McMahon said her time with the network was &#8220;a privilege and joy,&#8221; but added that recent months have been &#8220;challenging,&#8221; according to <a href="https://www.nbcnews.com/business/media/cbs-news-chief-steps-down-over-trump-tensions-rcna207700" target="_blank" rel="noopener">NBC News</a>. Her resignation comes as Paramount moves closer to settling a $20 billion lawsuit brought by Trump, which alleges that &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; deceptively edited an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris to cover up her poor answer while she was running for president. Paramount&#8217;s controlling shareholder and chair, Shari Redstone, wants to settle the lawsuit as she also <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2025-04-28/behind-the-60-minutes-upheaval-a-big-merger-seeking-approval" target="_blank" rel="noopener">seeks</a> the Trump administration&#8217;s approval to sell her company to the entertainment company, Skydance.
&#8220;It’s become clear that the company and I do not agree on the path forward,&#8221; McMahon wrote in a memo to CBS News staff. &#8220;It’s time for me to move on and for this organization to move forward with new leadership.&#8221;
McMahon, who took over as CBS News and Stations president in August 2023, put herself in the crosshairs of Paramount executives with her support of former longtime &#8220;60 Minutes&#8221; executive producer Bill Owens, who resigned last month, citing a lack of control over the direction of the stalwart news program, The New York Times <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/19/business/media/cbs-60-minutes-trump-wendy-mcmahon.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">reported</a>. The leadership at Paramount was reportedly growing anxious with how the show reported on the Trump administration.
Redstone also slammed CBS News leadership last October after it reprimanded “CBS Mornings” anchor Tony Dokoupil for asking Left-wing activist Ta-Nehisi Coates tough questions about the Israel-Gaza conflict. McMahon informed Dokoupil that he had violated &#8220;the preproduction process where questions are run through Race and Culture and Standards and Practice.&#8221; Redstone <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2024/10/09/business/media/ta-nehisi-coates-cbs-interview-shari-redstone.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said publicl</a>y that CBS News&#8217; decision to reprimand the anchor was &#8220;a mistake.&#8221;
“I think we all agree that this was not handled correctly,” Redstone said.
McMahon will continue to work as CBS News president for a transition period that will last &#8220;a few weeks,&#8221; according to George Cheeks, the chief executive of CBS. McMahon will be replaced by Tom Cibrowski, who recently joined CBS News after working for ABC News for 30 years in multiple roles, and Jennifer Mitchell, who currently &#8220;oversees 27 CBS-owned stations and manages stations operations in 17 markets.&#8221;
