FBI Director Christopher Wray warned during an interview on Sunday that the threat of Islamic terrorism was much more significant than most in the U.S. realize.
Wray made the remarks during an interview on CBS News’ “60 Minutes” just two weeks after an ISIS-inspired terrorist killed 14 people on New Year’s Day in New Orleans’ French Quarter.
“There was a guy, a Pakistani citizen just a few months ago who we worked with our Canadian partners to arrest,” Wray said. “This guy was trying to get into the U.S., to get to New York City to conduct a mass shooting at a Jewish center in Brooklyn. And, in his words, not my words, his words, he wanted to conduct the largest attack in the U.S. since 9/11.”
“So what I would say to the American people is that, when you think these things are happening half a world away, it’s like that little inscription on your mirror in your car, ‘Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear,'” he continued.
Wray said that the terrorist in New Orleans, a U.S. citizen, was “radicalized online” and was “determined to try to murder as many innocent people as he could in the name of ISIS.”

He said that lone wolf attacks were the most difficult to stop because terrorists like one in New Orleans “radicalize not in years but in weeks,” and they use crude methods of attack that are deadly.
“And if you think about that old saying about connecting the dots, there are not a lot of dots out there to connect,” he said. “And there’s very little time in which to connect them.”
