A 21-year-old woman has been sentenced to jail time for lying about being raped on a college campus in Michigan.
Mary Zolkowski will serve 45 days behind bars and two years probation after pleading guilty to falsely reporting a rape in March.
The woman told her mother she had been raped in a parking lot at Delta College in February. Her mother subsequently called the campus to report the false incident and Zolkowski followed up by filing a formal report.
According to a previous report from MLive, the charge was potentially “punishable by up to four years of imprisonment and a $2,000 fine.”
Police officers on campus were unable to verify the woman’s claims, and, during the investigation, notes Newsweek, Zolkowski “refused to provide a medical examination and was unable to provide a detailed description of the made-up suspect, as she had ‘kind of blacked out’ during it.”
The college student eventually confessed that she fabricated the incident.
In March, Zolkowski clarified that she was allegedly “assaulted previously,” but not on campus.
“I was assaulted previously, not at Delta’s campus,” she said, according to MLive. “And because I was ashamed of circumstances of that, when my mother called, I vented through Delta, which was very wrong of me. I should have been truthful from the very beginning, and I used Delta.”
Per the sentence, Zolkowski is also required to a mental health assessment and will have to serve an additional 220 days if she violates probation, notes USA Today.
