A Florida woman was arrested and charged with driving under the influence after allegedly driving up to 50 mph on a crowded beach Saturday, nearly hitting a child.
The woman, 26-year-old Sarah Ramsammy of Orlando, drove on the shoreline of New Smyrna Beach as people flocked to the ocean for the holiday weekend. After driving her vehicle into the water, Ramsammy told deputies from the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office that she was trying to turn around and was “not sure” what happened, body cam footage showed, as reported by Fox 35.
“I was the driver, and they kinda stopped us, and they said that we almost hit a child,” Ramsammy told authorities, standing next to her SUV that was partially submerged in the ocean. “I didn’t think that we did, but that’s what they told us.”

Another woman was in the car with Ramsammy. Although vehicles are allowed on some parts of the beach, authorities informed Ramsammy that she had recklessly driven in a restricted area.
“People are down here because you can’t drive on this part of the beach,” the deputies said before telling her she would go to jail.
“And why am I going to jail?” Ramsammy asked.
“Because right now I think you’re driving under the influence,” the deputy responded.
“Okay,” the woman said as her passenger pleaded with the officers not to place her friend under arrest.

Ramsammy had a blood alcohol level of .153, almost double the legal limit, according to authorities. She was also charged with reckless driving and was released on bond Sunday night, ABC News reported.
