Will FBI Director James Comey Have The Guts To Stand In The Face Of The Clinton/Obama Machine?

FBI Director James Comey should be prepared for his spot beneath the Obama bus.

It’s coming directly at him.

As former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton tightens her deathgrip on the Democratic nomination, David Shuster of Al Jazeera America reports that the FBi has reached the end of its investigation of Clinton. Apparently, Comey has been coordinating regularly with Department of Justice prosecutors, and Attorney General Loretta Lynch is being regularly briefed. Now the FBI is solidifying its final interview list, including Clinton, and her former State Department aides Philippe Reines and Cheryl Mills. When Comey completes his investigation, he’ll recommend whether Lynch ought to charge Clinton. Fox News reports that Lynch has signed off on the formal interview requests.

According to former assistant director of the FBI’s criminal investigative division Ron Hosko, “Timing is of the essence, but being right is absolutely critical. Comey must be the one to make the case that the law has been broken and a prosecution is recommended.” And Lynch herself told Congress in February that she would wait for Comey’s recommendation.

Which, of course, puts the blame squarely on Comey should this go forward.

Comey will undoubtedly be cast by the media and the Clinton camp as an anti-Clinton right-wing hack; in 1996, according to Time, he concluded as deputy special counsel to the Senate Whitewater Committee that “Hillary Clinton was personally involved in mishandling documents and had ordered others to block investigators as they pursued their case. Worse, her behavior fit into a pattern of concealment.” Comey called this a “highly improper pattern of deliberate misconduct.” In a later role as a federal prosecutor appointed by George W. Bush, Comey later refused to prosecute the Clintons over the Marc Rich pardon. Comey was later involved in ousting then-Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez by agreeing to release details about Gonzalez placing classified information on the National Security Agency’s Stellar Wind program.

If Comey moves forward by recommending an indictment against Hillary, the left will come for him, torches waving and pitchforks aloft. Lynch has already insulated herself by putting Comey out front; Obama has left him out there hanging, too. Even though Comey was appointed to his post by Obama in 2013, watch for the spin that he’s a Republican hack out to get the Clintons – Hillary’s usual spin – if charges do indeed result.

And what if no charges are forthcoming? The Obama administration will pretend that Loretta Lynch and Obama had nothing to do with it; unless Comey resigns in protest, that will all remain behind closed doors.

So Comey’s on his own. Let’s hope he has the guts to do the right thing in the face of the tsunami that will face him should he buck the advice of National Journal’s Ron Fournier and treat Hillary the way any other citizen would be treated.
