Why Meryl Streep And Hollywood Matter To Americans

By  Ben Shapiro

So, in a move only slight less predictable than the Donald Trump tweetstorm that followed, Meryl Streep took the opportunity at winning a lifetime achievement award to bash Trump personally. This made her a “hero” according to some on the left:

Because nothing says heroism quite like saying something with which everybody in Hollywood agrees. And just listen to Hollywood: they’re not a bubble!

Streep’s speech focused in on Trump personally. Why? Because Streep, as Trump says, is a Hillary hack. She claimed that “Hollywood, foreigners, and the press” are “the most vilified segments in American society right now,” which is true if you don’t include Evangelical bakers, Trump voters, and CEOs, among others. It’s a bit rich for Streep to stand there in a multi-thousand dollar dress from the privileged leftist enclave of Hollywood whining about her victimhood.

But she continued by citing foreigners in Hollywood (including Natalie Portman, born in “Jerusalem” – not Israel, of course, since Streep is a leftist). Then she bashed “football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts.” Which, of course, is vilification of a swath of the country that enjoys those two sports.

Streep then continued on by ripping into Trump’s mockery of a disabled journalist. “And this instinct to humiliate, when it’s modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody’s life, because it kind of gives permission for other people to do the same thing,” she stated. “Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.”

This coming from a woman who is a massive advocate for government interventionism, the ultimate bullying, and who has used her platform to cheer a child molester (Roman Polanski) and mock Trump. And the left seemed to have very little problem with Barack Obama using the IRS to crack down on his political opposition.

But here’s the big question: why do Republicans and conservatives care? Why do they still get upset when Hollywood leftists act like Hollywood leftists?

Because Hollywood still represents us. In the 1940s and 1950s, Americans saw Hollywood as our industry – a reflection of America to the rest of the world. We have a stake in what Hollywood is, because Hollywood shapes how people think and feel about the country.

More than that, Hollywood represents something we’re supposed to hold in common: culture. We may not agree on politics, but we can all talk about Game of Thrones. To use a phrase the left likes, most Americans want their entertainment to be a “safe space” for enjoyment rather than political hackery.

Instead, Hollywood plays partisan politics. They have every right to do so, but they shouldn’t be upset with Americans react badly. Hollywood simply doesn’t recognize its own limitations. Streep said in her speech that the “actor’s only job” was “to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like.” But that’s not the job she did last night. She instead decided to give a DNC speech for Hillary Clinton. Americans tuned into the Golden Globes to watch stars be stars, not leftists be leftists. Conservatives and Republicans don’t watch the NFL to be lectured by Colin Kaepernick, Hollywood movies to be lectured by Meryl Streep, or pop music concerts to be lectured by Madonna. We want to draw a line between entertainment and politics.

But the left won’t leave well enough alone. They feel the necessity to infect everything with politics – and then they’re shocked by the fact that Americans look at them and react against their politicking. Which is one of the reasons Hillary lost because she kept trotting out celebrities. The culture gap is real, and Hollywood helps cause it with its constant disrespect of flyover country – not just in terms of its personal politics, but in terms of the content it produces that reflects those politics.

No wonder conservatives, no matter where they stand on Trump, mocked Meryl Streep. She’s certainly worthy of the mockery.
