Who’s Really Undermining Faith In Our Elections? Democrats, Mostly

By  Ben Shapiro

On Monday, Nate Silver of 538 observed that President Trump’s overheated rhetoric about the impact of voter fraud endangered Americans’ perceptions regarding the validity of our electoral system. Here’s what he tweeted:

Silver’s not wrong about Trump’s overwrought language: there’s a massive difference between Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) stating that Florida election law has been violated and President Trump stating that Democrats are voting multiple times in elections, and thereby shifting election results.

But Silver has been less than forthcoming about mainstream Democrats, who have repeatedly claimed over the last 48 hours that Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams actually won a race she lost. Take, for example, Hillary Clinton:

Or Senator Sherrod Brown (D-OH):

Or Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-FL) with regard to Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL):

Here’s the sad truth: some Republicans have suggested that voter fraud has been taking place on a wide scale, and that is inconsistent with the available evidence; mainstream Democrats have, without any similar blowback, been claiming widespread voter suppression without evidence. None of this is good for faith in our electoral system.

You know what would be good for such faith? Abiding by the law, which officials in Florida simply are not doing. Here’s the update from Alex Seitz-Wald at NBC News:

Republicans should be upset about this, as should everyone else. As for accusations of voter suppression in Georgia, those are simply nonsense. As Erick Erickson has pointed out, those on the pending list in Georgia had failed Social Security Number verification; Stacey Abrams’ New Georgia Project was “responsible for 23% of those, or 11,024 votes…None of those 11,024 voters have ever attempted to vote or contact a local board of elections to provide the correct social security number. In other words, 75% of the people provided the wrong four last digits of their purported social security numbers and 23% were actually filed not by the voter, but by a group associated with Stacey Abrams.” Erickson has been documenting for weeks in advance that Abrams would try to claim voter fraud or suppression if she lost.

Undermining electoral faith isn’t a partisan issue. It’s a bipartisan problem. But the media only seem concerned when Republicans cry foul.
