On Wednesday, President-elect Donald Trump announced his slogan for his re-election campaign in 2020, and it’s pretty much exactly what you’d guess: “Keep America Great!”
Just think of all those red hats!
Trump revealed the new slogan during an interview with The Washington Post, a publication he temporarily banned from campaign events during the 2016 presidential election.
“Are you ready?” asked Trump, hyping up the simple but sure to be effective slogan: “‘Keep America Great,’ exclamation point.”
Turning to a lawyer of his, Trump said: “Will you trademark and register, if you would, if you like it — I think I like it, right? Do this: ‘Keep America Great,’ with an exclamation point.”
“With and without an exclamation. ‘Keep America Great,” he added, giving himself some options.
“Got it,” the lawyer answered.
Trump’s 2016 “Make America Great Again” slogan was a homerun. His supporters would chant those four words in intense enthusiasm at his massive rallies, or they’d slap the slogan as an acronym on their social media profiles: #MAGA. Trump himself would sport an iconic old-school red hat with the four words embroidered on it in white to every campaign event.
Sometimes he’d switch it up and go for a white or camouflage hat, but the “Make American Great Again” slogan would always be written across the front. His supporters bought endless #MAGA merch, too. The slogan had a life of its own.
Trump explained that his 2020 slogan, although conceived so early, will work because he’s so confident that American will be “great” by the end of his first term.
“I am so confident that we are going to be, it is going to be so amazing,” he told the Post. “It’s the only reason I give it to you. If I was, like, ambiguous about it, if I wasn’t sure about what is going to happen–the country is going to be great.”
Trump’s 2020 slogan will likely be effective, just as his last; though there better be an uptick in the economy and our standing in the world if he wants the “Keep America Great!” expression to hold any weight.
“And we’re going to show the people as we build up our military, we’re going to display our military,” Trump told the Post.
“That military may come marching down Pennsylvania Avenue. That military may be flying over New York City and Washington, D.C., for parades. I mean, we’re going to be showing our military,” the PEOTUS added.
Trump predicted that starting Monday, after he’s officially sworn in, the people will start to feel the country becoming “great” again.
“Wait till you see what happens, starting next Monday,” he stated. “A lot of things are going to happen. Great things.”
