China has passed a sweeping national security law that human rights activists are describing as a “weapon of repression to be used against government critics” in Hong Kong, as the Chinese Communist Party continues to tighten its grip on the region.
Chinese President Xi Jinping signed into a law on Tuesday a bill banning acts of sedition, subversion, and terrorism, according to the South China Morning Post. The National People’s Congress Standing Committee (NPCSC), China’s top legislative body, reportedly passed the legislation in a 162-0 vote on Tuesday morning.
