Democratic Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot has stepped up her campaign to promote the available COVID-19 vaccines, suggesting in a Thursday social media post that she planned to pay citizens to get the jab.

“The message is clear. Get vaccinated from the comfort of your home and this stack could be yours,” Lightfoot’s message read. The tweet included a photo of the Chicago Mayor standing next to the words “GET VAX’D” spelled out with 41 $20 bills, one $5 bill, and a folded $1 as an apostrophe — which adds up to a total of $826.

Lightfoot has previously implemented a COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all city workers, making exceptions for those who were willing to instead test twice weekly. She has also imposed a mandate on numerous businesses — primarily gyms, restaurants, and other entertainment venues — in Chicago, demanding that they require proof of vaccination from patrons if they want to remain operational.

But Lightfoot’s latest attempt to push the vaccine was largely met with ridicule — primarily from people who were certain that the tweet couldn’t possibly be real. But this soon gave way to people suggesting that she looked like a “Batman villain” to those who were critical of the condition of the couch that also appeared in the photo.

“She looks like a Batman villain with that money and pose,” Frank Fleming tweeted, adding, “She really needs an aide constantly whispering in her ear, ‘Don’t be weird. Stop being weird.'”

“It’s simple, we kill the Batman,” Stephen Miller added.

“This is a mayor of a US metropolis,” said Barrington Martin II.

Siraj Hashmi noted, “The reboot of MTV Cribs sucks.”

“Whoever told her this was a good tweet should be fired immediately,” Ben Askren tweeted.

“I am now terrified of the vaccine,” Bethany Shondark Mandel remarked.

“The message is clear. Get your couch cleaned and stop trying to bribe people,” was the tweet from Aldous Huxley’s Ghost™.

Lightfoot is far from the only public official offering incentives for those who get vaccinated — numerous states have offered lotteries with jackpots of thousands or even millions of dollars in prizes for those who have gotten the vaccine. The largest single jackpot was $5 million offered by the state of New Mexico.

Private companies have gotten onboard as well, offering everything from Krispy Kreme donuts to free rides to get the vaccine via Uber or Lyft. Some companies even offered cash incentives to their employees — bonuses ranging from $25-500 — who got the vaccine.

Lightfoot followed her Thursday post with two more on Friday, urging Chicago residents to get the vaccine in an effort to stem the tide of Omicron variant infections.

The best defense against #Omicron is vaccination. Get it done,” she said, adding, “The vaccine saves lives.”
