WATCH: Trump Primary Challenger Joe Walsh Confronted Over His ‘Racist’ Twitter Comments

On Sunday, conservative talk radio host and former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh announced his intention to primary President Trump on ABC’s “This Week” with George Stephanopoulos.

During the segment, in which Walsh called President Trump “unfit,” as well as “erratic” and “cruel,” Stephanopoulos questioned whether the former congressman is the right person to face the president, given his history.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You said you want to make the case against the president. The question is, are you the best messenger? You said you wanted to make a moral case against the president. Here’s what The Washington Examiner, conservative newspaper, said in response to your potential candidacy this week: “There is the matter of his history of being Trumpier than Trump. He has made a living on peddling the same sort of demagoguery, conspiracy-mongering, and right-wing bomb-throwing for which he now condemns the president.”

Your response?

WALSH: I helped create Trump. And George, that’s not an easy thing to say. Look, we were divided before Trump. I went to Washington eight years ago, part of the Tea Party class, wanted to shake Washington up. I got involved in the battles. And there were plenty of times where I went beyond the policy and the idea differences, and I got personal, and I got hateful. I said some ugly things about President Obama that I regret. And it’s difficult, but I think – I think that helped create Trump. And I feel responsible for that.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You did provide aid and comfort for the kind of things he was saying. You mentioned Obama. You called President Obama a Muslim, an enemy, a traitor, and you often spoke out on racial themes.

Stephanopoulos then showed two tweets in which Walsh used racial language while writing about former President Obama and current 2020 candidate Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA).

“That’s kind of textbook racism and sexism,” Stephanopoulos stated.

Walsh replied: “Well, again, the beauty of what President Trump has done is, George, he’s made me reflect on some of things I have said in the past. I had strong policy disagreements with Barack Obama and too often I let those policy disagreements get personal.”

STEPHANOPOULOS: Did you really believe he’s a Muslim?

WALSH: God, no – and I have apologized for that. And that’s not an easy thing to do, not at all. But think about the contrast, George. Again, I’m bearing my soul with you right now on national TV. We have a guy in the White House who’s never apologized for anything he’s done or said. I think it’s a weakness not to apologize. I helped create Trump. There’s no doubt about that – the personal, ugly politics. I regret that, and I’m sorry for that, and now we have got a guy in the White House, George, that’s all he does.

The tweets noted by Stephanopoulos are just two of many in which Walsh used racial language, referred to Obama as a “Muslim,” or made other similar remarks.

October 2017 (referring to a joke on “SNL” by comedian Michael Che): He calls Trump a “cheap cracker.” On national TV. Would a comedian still have a job if he called Obama a “n*****?”

August 2017 (referring to the suspension of an umpire): Imagine if he had called him the biggest f***** in the league.

March 2017: And your way wrong on your main point Angela. We LOWERED the bar for Obama. He was held to a lower standard cuz he was black.

December 31, 2016: Obama is a Muslim. Happy New Year!

April 2016: A professional hockey player was just suspended for 1 game for using the word “f**” during a game last night. The p***ification of America.

December 2015: Loretta Lynch, this is America dammit! I have a right to say whatever I want about Muslims. If Muslims don’t like it, they can leave. Dig?

June 2014: Found out if I said Redskins or Cracker or Redneck Bible Thumper, I could stay on. But if I said N***** or Sp***, they cut me off.

June 2014: So if “Redskins” is so racist, why do even liberals say & print the term. We’d never use n*****, sp***, honky, or cracker in a tweet. Right?

On Thursday, in response to a question about deleting old tweets, Walsh tweeted the following: “I don’t delete tweets. If I tweet something, it’s mine. I’ve probably got 50,000? tweets out there. There are easily a few hundred where I went over the line, got ugly, or tweeted something demanding an apology. I’ve done my best to own them & apologize where necessary.”

Walsh has also been replying to twitter users bringing up his past remarks:
