Tracy Chapman made a rare appearance at the 2024 Grammys on Sunday, where she surprised fans when she joined Luke Combs on stage to sing an acoustic version of her song, “Fast Car.”

During the 66th annual awards show, Chapman sang a few lines of her 1988 hit before the 33-year-old country singer joined in with his more gritty version that blew up the music charts last year.

Chapman, 59, sounded as beautiful as ever as the two took turns with the verses in a duet that wowed the star-studded audience in the room and viewers at home.

At one point, the camera cut away to the audience, showing superstar singers like Taylor Swift and Jelly Roll standing and singing along with Chapman and Combs.

At home, the performance was received just as well, with people reposting clips of the performance on social media and describing the duet as the highlight of the night.

“Watching Tracy Chapman perform ‘Fast Car’ with Luke Combs made me very happy,” one account posted. “I love how respectful he’s been of her work and her legacy.”

Another added, “Okay America needed this moment! THEE Tracy Chapman performing Fast Car with Luke Combs #GRAMMY”

While a third wrote, “I can’t remember being this moved by a performance. The peerless Tracy Chapman performs Fast Car with Luke Combs for the first time in years at the Grammys. This is very special.”

At the end of the song, the stars in the room cheered and gave Chapman and Combs a standing ovation.

Combs’ version of “Fast Car” made him a crossover hit over the summer, topping Billboard’s Radio Songs chart for four weeks, Variety noted.

It made it to the number one spot on the adult pop and country charts for two weeks each, and No. 6 on Top 40 radio and No. 2 on the Hot 100, the outlet noted. Combs also broke into the U.K. Top 40 for the first time with the Chapman cover.

Chapman, who has only performed in public three times since the conclusion of her tour in 2009, peaked at No. 6 on the Hot 100 in the U.S. in 1988 and hit the fifth spot in the U.K. two times, once in 1988 and then again 23 years later in 2011, the outlet noted.
