Friday morning, “Today” show host Hoda Kotb broke down into tears nearing the end of her interview with former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, who, along with his wife Brittany, recently donated a stunning $5 million to coronavirus relief efforts in Louisiana.

Kotb formerly worked as an anchor at WWL-TV in New Orleans, Page Six noted Friday.

“The popular anchor has been flying solo in the 30 Rockefeller studio as her co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is self-isolating and coming live from her home,” the report outlined. “And it just appeared too much as mom of two Kotb was overcome after talking to New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees about his efforts to help the state amid a staggering spike in coronavirus cases there.”

Wrapping up her interview with Brees, Kotb told the former QB, “I also think a lot of things are contagious, including generosity. Our hope is that because you let us know that you made this big, generous donation, I think other people look at that and say, ‘Hey, maybe I can help out, too.'”

“Drew, we love ya!” Kotb told Brees

“Love you, too, Hoda,” he returned. “Thank you.”

“Okay, a lot more,” Kotb started to say before trailing off and breaking down into tears.

“Sorry, sorry,” the popular host said, hand over her face.

“Ugh, Hoda, I know,” Guthrie told her co-host. “It’s a lot. Hoda, I’m so sorry, hun. Take a moment,” she advised. “It’s a lot.”

Kotb again quietly apologized, “Sorry.”

“It’s a lot. I know where your heart is, my dear. I do,” Guthrie said, before teasing the upcoming stories on the show for her co-host.

On Thursday, the Brees family announced their generous $5 million donation toward coronavirus-related efforts and relief for the people of Louisiana in a social media post urging folks to “maintain hope.”

“Brittany and I are committing $5,000,000 to the State of Louisiana in 2020. The priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time,” Brees wrote on his Instagram page.

“After considerable research and conversations with local organizations, we will be mobilizing our partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr to prepare and deliver over 10,000 meals per day throughout Louisiana for as long as it takes to children on meal programs, seniors, and families in need,” he added. “Let’s all do our part, maintain hope, and get through this together.”

Brees is known for his generosity throughout Louisiana. In July, for example, the famed football player donated $250,000 to New Orleans schools.

New Orleans has become a new coronavirus hotspot, with at least 997 confirmed cases, according to a Fox News report. Throughout Louisiana, there have been 2,305 confirmed COVID-19 cases, and a total of 83 deaths.

New Orleans Mardi Gras was likely a factor in the spread, experts suggest, the Fox report outlined: “More than a million revelers crowded into the city’s famed French Quarter and other neighborhoods over several weeks to celebrate the costumed gathering, the culmination of the Carnival celebration. The Mardi Gras season ran from Jan. 6 to Feb. 25, or Fat Tuesday.”
