A child in China was reportedly ambushed by a monkey and dragged by her hair before a bystander intervened to save her.

Footage from Chinese state-controlled broadcaster CCTV shows a toddler in Chongqing Municipality attempting to ride her scooter. A monkey then approached her from behind and suddenly threw her to the ground, dragging her across the pavement by her hair.

A bystander, however, intervened while the girl’s mother was cooking inside. According to The Sun, the mother reported the incident to local authorities.

“According to accounts of concerned neighbors, the monkey first arrived in the village last May and was already known to police having attacked pensioners on multiple occasions,” The Sun reported. “Local police say the tiny animal inhabits mountains nearby and occasionally comes to the residential area to cause havoc. But, despite numerous attempts to catch the monkey, search efforts have remained fruitless.”

Authorities plan to give the monkey over to the wild animal protection department once the creature is captured.

Last year, however, The Sun reported that a two-month-old baby in Butterworth, Malaysia, had been “bitten numerous times and dragged around on the floor” by another monkey.

“The predator attacked when the baby was in the living room while his mother was in the kitchen. Upon hearing the 7-week-old crying loudly, the mother checked the living room to find her bloodied son on the floor and the animal standing near the front door of the house,” the outlet reported. “The family’s house was reportedly locked at the time of the attack and it is thought that the monkey gained entry by shaking the door until the latch opened.”

“According to a police report filed by the woman’s 27-year-old husband, who had come home with his other child shortly after the attack, the baby had bite marks on his right cheek, the back of his head and his abdomen,” The Sun continued, adding that the child was taken to the hospital to treat the bite marks.

In another memorable primate attack in Asia, a band of monkeys stole blood samples of patients who had tested positive for COVID-19 from a medical official.

“Authorities said they were not clear if the monkeys had spilled the blood samples, but people living near the leafy campus feared further spread of the virus if the monkeys carried the samples into residential areas,” Reuters reported in May 2020. “Monkeys have been increasingly straying into human settlements in India and causing disturbances, even attacking people. Environmentalists say the destruction of natural habitat is the main reason the animals move into urban areas in search of food.”

“No evidence has been found that monkeys can contract the infection,” Dr. S. K. Garg, an official at the state-run medical college where the attack took place, told Reuters.
