On Monday, Senator John Kennedy (R-LA) excoriated Senate Democrats for blocking the coronavirus stimulus bill in the Senate on Sunday and instead submitting their own version stuffed with all sorts of items on their leftist agenda, saying on Fox News, “Some of my colleagues, they’re acting like A-holes.”
The Daily Wire reported on Sunday, “The fate of a sweeping government rescue package to prop up an economy devastated by the coronavirus pandemic was in limbo on Sunday after Democrats blocked action in the Senate,” The New York Times reported. “The 47-47 vote was a stunning setback for a package that was emerging as the largest economic stimulus measure in modern American history – now expected to cost $1.8 trillion or more.”
The bill the Democrats submitted included, as Townhall’s Guy Benson reported Monday, “unprecedented collective bargaining powers for unions,” “increased fuel emissions standards for airlines,” and “expansion of wind and solar tax credits.” The bill also planned to bail out the U.S. Post Office.
On the floor of the Senate, Kennedy had stated, “You know what the American people are thinking right now, Mr. President? They’re thinking that this country was founded by geniuses but is being run by a bunch of idiots. . . What are we going to leave to our children if we allow this economy to crash?”
Appearing on Fox News, Kennedy was asked why the Democrats had acted in such a selfish and mean-spirited way. He answered:
I think that they think that they have the Republicans over a barrel and the president. You know, reality calls and Congress is hanging up; I meant what I said on the floor. More charitable Americans are thinking to themselves, “Well, there are some good members of Congress but we can’t figure what they’re good for. Less charitable Americans are saying, “How did these morons make it through the birth canal?”
He continued, “People are losing their jobs; they’re losing their savings; they’re losing their 401k. We think we know how to get the economy back on its feet over the next 60 to 90 days until we can get control of the virus, and some of my colleagues, they’re acting like A-holes. I’m sorry, I’m not saying they mean to, but nonetheless, they’re killing it. They’re just throwing in every special interest political want, not need, thinking that they can ram it through, because we’re too scared to vote against it. And it’s wrong, man, it’s just wrong.”
A little later, Kennedy asserted, “It’s basically they want the Green New Deal and they’re saying, “If you Republicans don’t endorse it, we’re going to strangle the American people economically.” Look, for a small segment of our population, it’s true: the Corona virus can kill you. For a small segment. But you know what else can kill you? Poverty. Hunger. Losing the entire economy. And we have to stop thinking about the next election and try to think a little more about the next generation and what we’re going to leave to them, which is going to be the little end of nothing if we let this economy collapse. And it’s avoidable, we can stand it back up. But we don’t have months to do it; we’ve got days.”
