In recently surfaced footage, Pennsylvania Lt. Governor and Democratic Senate nominee John Fetterman responded affirmatively when asked if he agreed that LGBTQ education should be “mandatory” in schools nationwide.

During a 2021 interview with Powered By Rainbows, the candidate — then competing for the Democratic Senate nomination — was asked whether he would be supportive of bills that make “LGBTQ education” mandatory in subjects such as history, literature, and science.

“I’m for as many perspectives in letting everybody be included in, because we are all part of America, and we all have history, and that should be a part of American history because you are a part of America in these communities,” Fetterman, dressed in a rainbow top hat and draped in a rainbow flag, responded.

The resurfaced comments from Fetterman, who is campaigning against Republican Senate nominee Dr. Mehmet Oz, came as many states advanced bills prohibiting leftist ideology in public schools. Earlier this year, Disney garnered controversy for opposing Florida’s parental rights legislation that banned classroom instruction about sexual orientation and gender identity from kindergarten to third grade. In an exclusive survey from The Daily Wire, 64% of Americans — including 62% of Democrats and 57% of independents — supported the Florida law.

Meanwhile, parents across the country have been finding books that promote homosexuality and transgenderism in public school libraries. One graphic novel found in a Hawaii high school included illustrations of sex between two males with a sex toy, as well as oral sex, masturbation, and other explicit content.

According to Fetterman’s campaign website, the longtime mayor of Braddock, Pennsylvania, was the “first and only elected official” in the Keystone State to “solemnize same-sex weddings” as early as 2013, even though the practice was still illegal. He vows to vote for the Equality Act — a bill that would insert “sexual orientation” and “gender identity” into the Civil Rights Act of 1964 — if elected to the Senate.

“I will also support efforts to end the hateful practice of so-called ‘conversion therapy,’ and fight to strengthen anti-harrassment policies on school and college campuses,” Fetterman’s campaign website adds.

During the interview with Powered By Rainbows, Fetterman shared that he had attended “many, many Pride events … in red counties” — a reality signaling that Republicans are increasingly “embracing these communities.” Indeed, a majority of Republican voters had for the first time indicated that they support same-sex marriage earlier in 2021, according to a poll from the Public Religion Research Institute.

“We need to give equal protection under the law to the gay and trans communities — certainly here in Pennsylvania, but everywhere in our country,” Fetterman remarked.

In a recent poll from CBS News and YouGov, Fetterman was supported by 52% of respondents, while Oz was backed by 47%. Voters also indicated a higher level of favorability for the former candidate — 56% of Fetterman supporters said they are backing him “mainly because” they like him, while only 15% of Oz voters said the same.

Democrats are hoping that Fetterman will contribute to a majority in the evenly divided Senate. However, Fetterman suffered a stroke days before the state’s primary election and has since stumbled during speeches at multiple campaign events. Roughly 41% of voters believe that Fetterman is not in “good enough health” to serve in office.
