Employees at the downtown St. Louis branch of UMB Bank discovered a smashed front window and a wild surveillance video when they arrived at work on Thursday morning — all caused by a very confused and frightened deer.

According to reports, police were dispatched to the UMB Bank branch near Market Street and Broadway around 5:45 a.m. local time. Officers contacted animal rescue services immediately and attempted to help the deer to safely exit the building.

“CRAZY VIDEO: this is surveillance video from UMB Bank off Market and Broadway,” @KMOV reporter Gabriela Vidal tweeted. “At 5:30 a.m., a deer entered the building, breaking thru glass and struggling to get out of the building. The deer eventually gets out before police arrive.”

The surveillance video, which circulated on social media, showed the deer as it entered the building, bursting through one of the street-level windows and into the lobby. The frightened animal then raced around the lobby — apparently looking for a way out — slipping and skidding several times as it tried to navigate the bank’s slick tile floor.

Officers on the scene tried to help steer the deer toward a safe exit, but the animal was so scared by that point that it left the bank the same way it had come in — smashing through a second window in the process.

Animal rescue services did not arrive until after the deer had made its way out of the building and away from the immediate area. According t0 local reporting, no humans were hurt when the incident occurred. The condition of the deer is unknown.

KMOV reporters spoke to a someone from the Missouri Department of Conservation, who explained that deer often find their ways into strange places — particularly in the fall, during mating season. They said that the deer that crashed into the bank Thursday was more likely a yearling that had simply gotten lost.

Offbeat local news outlet The Riverfront Times took a different tone in reporting the incident, framing it as a “poorly executed” bank heist.

“According to a representative from the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department, officials received a 911 call about the incident just before 5:45 a.m. Police then contacted Wildlife Rescue, who are better-equipped to handle shoddy bank heists poorly executed by woodland creatures. But when those officials arrived on the scene, the doe was in the wind, indicating that she was at least smart enough to have a getaway driver waiting outside,” they wrote. “At present the deer is still at large.”
