In February, Steven Crowder went to the University of Texas, Austin, to film the second edition of a “Change My Mind” episode about guns. During his time there, he spoke with two women who agreed to go to a gun range and learn the ins and outs of firearms and firearm safety. They also agreed to possibly purchase a gun themselves.
Cut to Monday — the Louder with Crowder gang has released the latest episode of “Change My Mind,” and this one is quite different.
Shauna and Tara, who previously agreed to go to a gun range with Crowder, began their training. The video shows Crowder first teaching his students basic handgun safety, such as always keeping their fingers off the trigger and keeping any gun (even unloaded) pointed away from any human. Next up were rifles and shotguns.
At the shooting range, the target was placed seven yards away. Crowder debunked the popular myth that people can and should shoot any assailant in the leg or shoulder. With a moving target at seven yards, this would be incredibly difficult, he told the women.
During this segment, Crowder shared with Shauna and Tara some of the useless features that were previously illegal under the assault weapons ban, which expired in 2004. For example, if a shotgun had a “pistol grip,” it was banned, even though a pistol grip does nothing to enhance the gun’s killing power.
As the shooting practice continued, Crowder added, “Concealed carry holders are actually six times less likely to commit crimes than even off duty police officers.” Additionally, he made sure the women knew that the “AR” in AR-15 stands for “Armalite,” not “assault rifle.”
After the practice, Crowder had one of the women go through the process of purchasing a gun. However, because she was under 21, she wasn’t allowed to buy a handgun. She walked through the background check process anyway.
The firearms seller told the group about “straw purchases,” saying, “If you were to come in here and I get the feeling that you’re buying a gun for her, but you’re doing a background check in your name, I can go to jail if I sell you the gun and don’t say anything.” He added that he’s previously refused to sell someone a gun before because he believed they were purchasing for someone else.
