President Donald Trump delivered a State of the Union Address on Tuesday night that struck a bipartisan cord and earned high marks from a majority of the American people, according to snap polling from both CNN and CBS.
But, predictably, a group of panelists at CNN, especially Mr. “White Lash” himself, Van Jones, were repulsed by Trump’s speech.
After former Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA) praised President Trump for the overtly bipartisan tone of the address, Jones chimed in to call the speech “psychotically incoherent,” riddled with “cookies and dog poop.”
“I see it very, very differently,” asserted Jones. “I saw this as a psychotically incoherent speech with cookies and dog poop. He tries to put together in the same speech these warm, kind things about humanitarianism, and caring about children. At the same time, he is demonizing people who are immigrants in a way that was appalling.”
Santorum interjected to question whom Trump was demonizing exactly. “Demonizing child trafficking?” he asked.
“No, no, hold on a second. Hold on a second,” Jones persisted. “There were people in that gallery who were children, who have been torn away from their mothers at the border. He did not mention them. There were soldiers who were transgender, who have been thrown out of the military. He didn’t mention them. There are people who — there are veterans — he talked about veterans. There are veterans who he has thrown out of this country who are ‘DREAM-ers.’ He did not mention them. And he didn’t say one positive thing.”
“So, he’s supposed to mention everyone you want him to mention?” asked Santorum in disbelief.
Trump should have talked “about the one who drowned saving people in Houston after the storm,” Jones suggested. “Talk about the people who have given their lives to this country.”
“You guys see this very differently,” Jones added.
But it appears three in four Americans viewed the speech very differently from Jones, not Santorum.
As reported by The Daily Wire on Wednesday morning, CNN begrudgingly told their viewers that 76% of those who watched Trump’s address approved of it.
“So I just want to stress here for a State of the Union Address, the president’s partisans, his supporters tend to turn out to watch the speech,” qualified CNN political director David Chalian. “This is true of a president of either party. Tonight we saw a heavily skewed Republican audience turn out to watch the president’s speech.”
Likewise, CBS News found 76% of those who watched the speech approved of it; a mere 24% disapproved.
Although Jones has praised the president’s bipartisan work concerning criminal justice reform — which was a focus of Trump’s Tuesday address, the leftist has been open about his disdain for the president and his supporters more often than not. Following the 2016 presidential election, for example, Jones called Trump’s win a “white lash.”
“This was a white lash. This was a white lash against a changing country, it was a white lash against a black president, in part. And that’s the part where the pain comes,” Jones said.
