Former Health and Human Services Secretary and current California Democratic gubernatorial candidate Xavier Becerra smirked and sipped his coffee when his Republican opponent, Steve Hilton, blasted him over his record on immigration.
During a CNN debate earlier this week, Hilton unleashed a devastating reality check on Becerra’s disastrous stint in the Biden administration. The showdown turned toxic when Becerra attempted to play the race card against Hilton, a U.K.-born immigrant.
Becerra sneered, “You seem to welcome immigrants who look like you, but deport immigrants who look like me.”
“What a disgraceful remark that was,” Hilton fired back, pointing out that Becerra had zero solutions for struggling everyday Californians. “All you’ve got is to talk about your federal politics. … That’s nothing but an insult to every Californian who is desperate for something to change.”
When Tapper pressed Becerra on the fact that illegal border crossings smashed all-time records under Biden before plunging under Trump, Becerra tried to pivot, giving a canned speech about border regulation and constitutional rights while insisting immigrants shouldn’t be “treated like animals.”
That’s when Hilton went in for the knockout blow.
Calling out the former HHS boss directly for his horrifying track record handling border kids, Hilton brought the hammer down on Becerra’s deadly negligence as Becerra smirked and sipped.
“When you were HHS secretary, you were responsible for 479,000 unaccompanied migrant children,” Hilton snapped. “You dismantled the vetting. … You sent thousands of young children directly into the clutches of child sex and labor traffickers!”
Hilton didn’t hold back, reminding viewers that a staggering 100,000 of those missing kids were under the age of 10. “I cannot believe that you haven’t apologized, that you haven’t any kind of sense of shame or responsibility for what you did to those children, and you stand here lecturing people!”
Becerra tried to brush off the nightmare stats as “retread Trump talking points.”
But Hilton pointed out, “It was The New York Times. They won a Pulitzer Prize for it!”
