Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX) urged President Donald Trump on Saturday to step down from the office of the presidency in order to unite the country and subsequently allow Congress to pass sweeping political reforms.

“The best possible path, especially if you are concerned about a country that has never been more divided, perhaps more highly polarized every day, is for this president to resign,” O’Rourke said during a panel at the annual Texas Tribune festival. “Allow this country to heal, and assure that we come back together with the greatest, most ambitious agenda we’ve ever faced, none of it possible while he remains in power.”

O’Rourke’s remarks come only days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that her Democratic caucus would be moving forward with an impeachment inquiry after reports emerged from a whistleblower that Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden by withholding the country’s foreign aid.

At the time of Pelosi’s decision, the reports were not confirmed. The White House released a transcript of the two leaders’ exchange the following day, which many have argued does not show the direct quid pro quo that was initially alleged.

“I think back to what we saw in 1974 with [former president] Richard Nixon,” O’Rourke said. “At the end of the day, before we got to the end of the trial and the end of impeachment hearings, Republican senators went to the White House and met with the president and said for the good of the country, for the good of your political career, for any legacy that you want to be able to maintain, the right thing for you to do now is to step down.”

“And he did,” he continued. “I think there is a similar opportunity open to members of the Senate right now, and frankly, open to those around Donald Trump.”

The former Texas congressman, who has been a vocal critic of Trump, has long demanded that Congress move forward with his impeachment.

During O’Rourke’s failed bid to unseat Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), he notably defended his support for impeachment pointing to the Trump campaign’s alleged efforts to collude with Russia during the 2016 presidential election. After spending more than $30 million, Special Counsel Robert Mueller concluded there was not enough evidence to corroborate the aforementioned allegation.

“We know from the whistleblower complaint that there are those close to the president who shared information with the whistleblower because they were so concerned about what the president said to the president of Ukraine asking for a favor, a political, personal favor, and using the leverage of the United States government … to exact that political and personal concession,” O’Rourke said at TribFest. “That they hid the phone call, and they began to share with the whistleblower their concerns.”

“Those people close to the president can sit down with [Trump] and level with him and make sure that he understands what is going to happen to him going forward,” he continued. “And that they also understand their complicity, and the judgment of history, and the judgment of our courts should they fail to act while there is still time to do it.”

O’Rourke was further pressed on whether he would pardon Trump if he was elected president in 2020.

“No,” O’Rourke replied amid cheers from the crowd.
