Washington, D.C.’s Democratic Mayor Muriel Bowser announced Wednesday that individuals ages 12 and up will be required to show proof of vaccination — meaning at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine — starting January 15, 2022.
In response, Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) called on Congress to re-assert its constitutional right to the exclusive jurisdiction over the nation’s capital while others pointed out how the vaccine will impact D.C. citizens and business owners.
Individuals will be required to prove their vaccination status by either an original or copy-photo of their vaccine card or a digital passport at restaurants, bars, nightclubs, indoor cultural and entertainment facilities, indoor exercise and recreational establishments, and indoor event and meeting establishments.
Likewise, beginning March 1, 2022, all eligible students in D.C. will be required to receive the COVID-19 vaccine:

However, similar to Chicago’s vaccine passport mandate announced yesterday, individuals running in for pick-up items or to use the restroom will not have to show proof.
According to local reports, exceptions to the mandate include “grocery stores, museums and places of worship.”
Businesses will also be required to check vaccine IDs and post a notice on their establishment regarding the need for verification. The mayor also stated that by February 15, 2022, all individuals visiting the aforementioned establishments must have proof of two doses of vaccines.
In reaction to the news, Congressman Thomas Massie (R-KY) stated that it was “Time for Congress to assert the Constitution and overrule this medical apartheid: ‘The Congress shall have Power To… exercise exclusive Legislation in all Cases whatsoever, over’ Washington, DC.”

As pointed out by GOP consultant Matt Whitlock, this announcement will also severely impact black residents in D.C.:
“WOW — with no test-out option,” Whitlock tweeted. “Only 46% of DC’s black population is vaccinated and only 34% of the 18-24 age range.”

American Moment’s Nick Solheim — whose operation is headquartered in D.C. — tweeted, “I am not vaccinated for COVID-19, I will not be getting vaccinated for COVID-19, and I will never comply with this rule. Spending my afternoon moving all my assets, memberships, and meetings for the next three months out of the District.”
“I will never give in,” he added. “You are not alone.”

On Monday, Bowser announced that D.C. city employees would have to be fully vaccinated in order to keep their job and that mask mandates were going back into effect starting immediately.
