While Sunday’s NFL game in Paris is still on as planned, a fan event for the Pittsburgh Steelers has been canceled following unrest in the city.

ESPN reported on Thursday that the event — planned for a bar in the Bastille neighborhood — was canceled because of safety concerns.

“Following recent events in the Bastille neighborhood, and after careful consideration, we felt it appropriate not to move forward with the planned Steelers House fan event in Paris,” a statement shared with fans said. “Preparations for Sunday’s NFL Paris game at Stade de France continue as planned, with the NFL working closely with local authorities and partners on all operational and security matters.”

The team also told The Associated Press that there had been no disruptions at league sites and described the cancellation as precautionary.

“As a precautionary measure, the Steelers designated bar that had been planned in Bastille — an area that has experienced recent disruptions — will not proceed.”

League Commissioner Roger Goodell said on Wednesday that Secretary of State Marco Rubio was in regular contact with French officials and was keeping the league informed of potential security threats.

“We’ve made all the preparations. Protests are not unusual in France, as you know, and that’s something that we will be aware of and make sure that the appropriate arrangements are made,” he said.

The violent protests — which have swept across Paris and other cities in France — reportedly stemmed from student dissatisfaction with the education system, but quickly grew into broader demonstrations, including blockades of the Louvre and looting of high-end stores in popular shopping districts.
