In case you haven’t been paying much attention to the Cleveland Browns this year — which would be understandable since they did manage to go 0-16 in 2017 — they’ve found themselves a star in quarterback Baker Mayfield, who helped lead them to a remarkable turnaround season that ended with a solid record of 7-8-1.
But it’s not just his play on the field that makes Mayfield a must-watch, it’s his charismatic personality, something his coaches and teammates have been saying since his time at the University of Oklahoma, where he won the Heisman in 2017.
The Browns know they’ve got the new face of their franchise, so they’re smartly highlighting him with every opportunity, including in a “mic’d up” video of their victorious Week 16 contest against the Cincinnati Bengals that provides 11 minutes of pure Mayfield gold.
A few highlights:
To guy helping him warm up: “Man, you didn’t have to give me so much crap in that video. What else am I supposed to do with my hands? I felt like Ricky Bobby. … I mean it felt like I was floating on a spaceship…”
After “In the Air Tonight” starts playing: “Oh come on, Philly! Philly Collins in this b*tch!” Singing nasally: “‘I’ve been waiting for this moment for all of my life…'”
Later: “Hey, last time they cut it before the beat dropped. …I mean how do you cut Philly Collins off? I would never disrespect Phil.” After playing air drums: “Woo! Woo! Woo!”
After trick play he didn’t think would work worked: “Oh my god? What the f*** is wrong with him? How did that work?”
After scrambling out of the pocket and throwing a touchdown pass: “(screams like a banshee repeatedly)!”
After celebrating in the end zone: “I’m glad I got in that Hollywood celebration.”
To ref after play: “Hey, I know you liked that one. That one was pretty tricky, huh?”
In huddle: “Hey, I’ll be honest. My fake on that one was f***ing beautiful.”
On the sideline: “My completion percentage is about as good as Drew Brees right now — shuffle passes. … I know one thing, I block better than David!”
Along with one-liners and obvious fun he’s having on the field, the young QB also consistently builds up his teammates, offering to block for his running backs and celebrating others’ success.
