Vice President JD Vance promised again on Tuesday that no American troops would be deployed to Gaza as Hamas tests the limits of the ceasefire with Israel that was brokered by President Donald Trump.

Vance met with Israeli leaders in southern Israel to discuss the ceasefire and hostage deal, saying at a press conference that he’s “optimistic” that the agreement will hold. The vice president then assured the American people that the Trump administration would not deploy U.S. forces to Gaza.

“I think it’s important for Americans to know a couple of things. Number one: there are not going to be American boots on the ground in Gaza,” Vance said. “The President of the United States has made that very clear. All of our military leadership has made that very clear.”

“What we can do is provide some useful coordination,” he added, saying that the United States would continue to act as a mediator between the Gulf Arab states, Egypt, Turkey, and Israel.

“The only real mediators are the United States of America. That’s the role that we’re going to play [that] I think the American people should be proud of,” Vance said. “But they should know that there are going to be no American boots on the ground in Gaza.”

President Trump warned Hamas last week, saying that if the terrorists continue their violence in Gaza, “we will have no choice but to go in and kill them.” Trump later said that he was not referring to U.S. forces being used to take out the terrorists.

“I didn’t say who will go in, but somebody will go in,” he said. “It’s not going to be us. We won’t have to. There are people very close, very nearby that will go in. They’ll do the trick very easily, but under our auspices.”

Shortly after the ceasefire went into effect and Israeli troops withdrew from much of the Gaza Strip, Hamas publicly executed men whom it accused of conspiring with Israel and started fighting rival groups within Gaza. Hamas has also failed to locate and hand over the rest of the deceased hostages.

Trump added in a Truth Social post on Tuesday, “an end to Hamas will be FAST, FURIOUS, & BRUTAL!” if the terror group fails to abide by the terms of the deal.

Vance said at the press conference, “We know that Hamas has to comply with the deal, and if Hamas doesn’t comply with the deal, very bad things are going to happen. But I’m not going to do what the President of the United States has thus far refused to do, which is put an explicit deadline on it, because a lot of this stuff is difficult. A lot of this stuff is unpredictable.”

Vance said that the United States and its partners would continue to work to bring the deceased hostages home and rebuild Gaza. He added that he believes some of the Arab nations are growing impatient with Hamas.
