As other Hollywood celebrities have vowed to boycott the state of Georgia, movie mogul Tyler Perry has called upon the Department of Justice to investigate the state for its voter integrity laws.

In a statement to Fox News, Perry, who runs a television and movie studio in Atlanta, decried the election integrity law as a “voter suppression law,” declaring it unconstitutional.

“As a Georgia resident and business owner I’ve been here a few times with the anti-abortion bill and the LGBTQ discrimination bill,” Perry said. “They all sent a shockwave through Georgia and the nation but none of them managed to succeed.”

Perry went as far as to liken the new law to the “Jim Crow era,” though he cautioned others against boycotting the state, noting the blue outcome.

“I’m resting my hope in the DOJ taking a hard look at this unconstitutional voter suppression law that harkens to the Jim Crow era,” he continued. “As some consider boycotting, please remember that we did turn Georgia blue and there is a gubernatorial race on the horizon — that’s the beauty of a democracy.”

Tyler Perry is hardly the first person to compare the election integrity laws to Jim Crow, a buzz phrase that has regularly been used by leftists since Republican Governor Brian Kemp signed the bill into law.

“The Republican who is sitting in Stacey Abrams’ chair just signed a despicable voter suppression bill into law to take Georgia back to Jim Crow. The Senate must pass the #ForThePeople Act and John Lewis Voting Rights Act immediately – our democracy is at stake tonight,” tweeted Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA).

“From passage of the #SB202 voter suppression bill targeted at Black and brown voters to the arrest of a Black legislator who was advocating for the voting rights of her constituents, today was a reminder of Georgia’s dark past. We must fight for the future of our democracy,” tweeted failed gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams.

“Make no mistake, this Georgia Jim Crow law and the similar ones being proposed in Arizona, Iowa dozens of other states are as much about motivating Republican voters who are downcast after the 2020 and January 2021 losses as they are about suppressing Democratic votes,” tweeted MSNBC’s Joy Reid.

“This is Jim Crow in the 21st Century. It must end,” President Joe Biden said in a written statement. “Republicans in the state instead rushed through an un-American law to deny people the right to vote. This law, like so many others being pursued by Republicans in statehouses across the country, is a blatant attack on the Constitution and good conscience.”

“Among the outrageous parts of this new state law, it ends voting hours early so working people can’t cast their vote after their shift is over,” he continued. “It adds rigid restrictions on casting absentee ballots that will effectively deny the right to vote to countless voters. And it makes it a crime to provide water to voters while they wait in line – lines Republican officials themselves have created by reducing the number of polling sites across the state, disproportionately in Black neighborhoods.”
