Trump’s Lawyer Just Came Up With A Creative Reason Why The Trump Jr.-Russia Meeting Was No Big Deal

President Trump’s personal lawyer, Jay Sekulow, now appears to be blaming the United States Secret Service for Donald Trump Jr.’s meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya.

Resorting to verbal contortions to defend the seemingly indefensible, Sekulow, who also serves as Chief Counsel for the American Center for Law & Justice (ACLJ), made his rounds on the Sunday morning talk show circuit to reframe Trump Jr.’s infamous meeting in every way imaginable. In other words, he offered every defense at his disposal just to see what stuck. But his most absurd rhetorical offensive reared its head on ABC News’ This Week.

Calling out the Secret Service with the same tone a high school principal uses to reprimand irresponsible prom chaperons, Sekulow suggested that perhaps agents should not have allowed the Russian lawyer and her entourage near Trump’s eldest son.

“I wonder why the Secret Service, if this was nefarious, why the Secret Service allowed these people in,” the president’s lawyer told host Jonathan Karl. “The President had Secret Service protection at that point, and that raised a question with me.”

Watch as Sekulow attempts to fish the most foul-smelling red herring:

As more evidence emerges of Trump Jr.’s meeting with Veselnitskaya, a Russian lawyer with alleged links to the Kremlin itself, both administration officials and the president’s own legal team are finding it more difficult to put a good spin on the scandal.
