Trump visited the cemetery to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After leaving Arlington, Trump is scheduled to rally with supporters at Capital One Arena. Later Sunday evening, Trump is expected to speak at a candlelight dinner.
Trump returned to Washington, D.C., on Saturday after a round of golf at his club in Sterling, Virginia. The president-elect spent the night at the Blair House, the official guest residence of the U.S. president on Pennsylvania Avenue, in line with tradition.
The festivities and ceremony will continue tomorrow on Inauguration Day. Trump will be sworn into office in the Capitol building after frigid temperatures expected in the nation’s capital pushed the ceremony indoors. The traditional parade was canceled.

One of those orders will be a stay on a ban of the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok from the U.S. Trump has sworn to hold off banning the app temporarily to give TikTok’s parent company Bytedance time to sell the platform to comply with legislation targeting the app’s Chinese ownership.
“I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security. The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order,” Trump announced in a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/113855616848696050">post</a> on Truth Social on Sunday.

Democratic Rep. Jared Golden of Maine bucked his own party to side with Republicans on voter ID requirements recently, but only after voting against similar requirements twice when he was a state legislator.
Golden is a vocal supporter of the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, a Republican bill to bolster election security, including through instituting a voter ID requirement to register to cast a ballot in a federal election. But a decade prior when Golden was serving in the Maine legislature, he voted against similar state legislation twice.
In 2015, Golden <a href="https://legislature.maine.gov/LawMakerWeb/rollcall.asp?ID=280054332&amp;chamber=House&amp;serialnumber=51" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> to kill LD 197, &#8220;An Act To Strengthen Maine&#8217;s Election Laws by Requiring Photographic Identification for the Purpose of Voting.&#8221;
Two years later in 2017, Golden <a href="https://www.mainelegislature.org/LawMakerWeb/rollcall.asp?ID=280062603&amp;chamber=H&amp;serialnumber=49" target="_blank" rel="noopener">voted</a> again against voter ID legislation. Golden and his fellow state Democrats voted in favor of a motion not to pass <a href="https://www.mainelegislature.org/legis/bills/getPDF.asp?paper=HP0089&amp;item=1&amp;snum=128" target="_blank" rel="noopener">LD 121</a>, which “requires that a voter provide proof of identity with photographic identification for the purpose of voting. The bill specifies the types of photographic identification that may be used to verify the identity of a voter.”
Last year, Golden seemingly shifted his stance on voter identification laws. The Maine Democrat, who was elected to United States Congress in 2018, voted in support of the GOP-led SAVE Act. He voted for it again earlier this year.
Golden later justified his support for the SAVE Act in a post on his Substack that bashed his fellow Democrats for fearmongering.
“Ensuring American elections are only for citizens is a proposition supported by 83% of Americans. It enjoys bipartisan support,” Golden <a href="https://jaredgolden.substack.com/p/dear-mainer-the-save-act-and-the" target="_blank" rel="noopener">wrote</a>. “But just like pro-worker, anti-free trade policies that were once welcomed for consideration by Democrats, this basic election integrity proposal has been sucked into the broader dynamic of resistance to anything that has support from Republicans, and specifically support from President Trump. Some are using misleading fear tactics about voter suppression because they think it will give them an upper hand in politics and elections.”
Golden’s swing toward Republican-backed bills could be a reflection of his competitive seat. He barely <a href="https://ballotpedia.org/Jared_Golden" target="_blank" rel="noopener">won</a> reelection last year by less than a point over his Republican challenger Austin Therialt. Golden’s district, Maine&#8217;s 2nd Congressional District, voted for President Donald Trump in 2020 and 2024. Recent polling has <a href="https://mainebeacon.com/opinion-maine-voters-want-our-leaders-to-stand-up-to-trump/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">suggested</a> Golden is well underwater with voters.

Maine’s Jared Golden Has A Shaky History Supporting Voter ID Laws

President Donald Trump named Fox News host and former prosecutor Jeanine Pirro to fill in as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia on Thursday.
Trump announced Pirro’s new role in a <a href="https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/114474584669905764" target="_blank" rel="noopener">post</a> on Truth Social. Pirro will take the place of acting U.S. Attorney Ed Martin, whose nomination to serve in the role under Trump was withdrawn.
“I am pleased to announce that Judge Jeanine Pirro will be appointed interim United States Attorney for the District of Columbia. Jeanine was Assistant District Attorney for Westchester County, New York, and then went on to serve as County Judge, and District Attorney, where she was the first woman ever to be elected to those positions,” Trump said.
“In addition to her Legal career, Jeanine previously hosted her own Fox News Show, Justice with Judge Jeanine, for ten years, and is currently Co-Host of The Five, one of the Highest Rated Shows on Television,” he continued. “Jeanine is incredibly well qualified for this position, and is considered one of the Top District Attorneys in the History of the State of New York. She is in a class by herself. Congratulations Jeanine!”
Trump <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/trump-teases-new-great-pick-for-d-c-u-s-attorney-after-withdrawing-ed-martin" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> earlier Thursday that he was withdrawing Martin’s nomination for the role after struggling for Republican support in the Senate.
“He is a terrific person,” Trump said in comments from the White House. “He wasn’t getting the support from people that I thought.”
“And he wasn’t rejected, but we felt it would be very – it would be hard. And we have somebody else that we’ll be announcing over the next two days who’s going to be great,” he added. Trump said that he would look at Martin for a possible position elsewhere in the Department of Justice.
Martin’s nomination ran into a snag after he met with GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina on Monday. On Tuesday, Tillis told reporters that he broke with Martin over comments the former nominee made on the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.
“I have no tolerance for anybody that entered the building on Jan. 6, and that’s probably where most of the friction was,” the Republican senator said.
Tillis said he has recommended that Trump tap SEC Chair Jay Clayton for the role.
“If you take a look at his tenure as SEC … he’s a rock solid, smart guy,” Tillis said. “So all I’ve said was: ‘Look, if we’ve got to find another nominee, I wouldn’t count him out if he would be willing to serve.’”

Trump Taps Former DA And Fox News Host For Acting D.C. U.S. Attorney: ‘In A Class By Herself’

President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that he would tap a new nominee to serve as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia after his pick, Ed Martin, struggled for support.
In comments from the Oval Office, Trump expressed disappointment in Martin’s situation. The nomination was pulled after GOP Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina met with Martin and said Tuesday that he would not back him for the U.S. attorney role.
&#8220;He is a terrific person,” said Trump. “He wasn&#8217;t getting the support from people that I thought.”
“I just want to say, Ed is unbelievable. Hopefully we can bring him into, whether it&#8217;s DOJ or whatever, in some capacity because he’s really outstanding,” the president continued. “To me, it was disappointing. I have to be straight. I was disappointed. A lot of people were disappointed. But that’s the way it works sometimes. That&#8217;s the way it works.”

Tillis <a href="https://www.politico.com/live-updates/2025/05/06/congress/thom-tillis-opposes-ed-martin-00330664" target="_blank" rel="noopener">told</a> reporters on Tuesday that his opposition to Martin was largely over disagreements about the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
“I have no tolerance for anybody that entered the building on Jan. 6, and that’s probably where most of the friction was,” the Republican senator said. He added that he had visited with Trump and suggested SEC Chair Jay Clayton be appointed to the post.
“If you take a look at his tenure as SEC &#8230; he’s a rock solid, smart guy,” Tillis said. “So all I’ve said was: ‘Look, if we’ve got to find another nominee, I wouldn’t count him out if he would be willing to serve.’”
It’s unclear if Trump means to take Tillis’ advice. Tillis’ pushback to Martin blocked his nomination in committee. As a member of the Judiciary Committee, Tillis’ opposition meant that Martin’s nomination would stick in committee in an 11-11 vote, assuming all other Republicans supported the nominee and all Democrats opposed.
Martin is currently serving as acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia. His appointment is set to expire on May 20.
The acting U.S. attorney sparked some pushback among Republicans over his past comments on the January 6 riot and some of the people involved.

Trump Teases New, ‘Great’ Pick For D.C. U.S. Attorney After Withdrawing Ed Martin

The Federal Reserve on Wednesday voted to hold interest rates steady while Chairman Jerome Powell warned that tariffs and trade wars are creating inflationary pressures.
“If the large increases in tariffs that have been announced are sustained, they’re likely to generate a rise in inflation, a slowdown in economic growth, and an increase in unemployment,” Powell said at a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB0ZL_52K74" target="_blank" rel="noopener">news conference</a>.
Powell also said that the economic picture in the United States is unclear. He said he does not know “which way this will shake out” whether to be concerned or not about U.S. economic growth.
“It’s really not at all clear what it is we should do,” said Powell.
The Fed’s vote on Wednesday will keep interest rates at 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent, where they have remained since December after some cuts to interest rates last year.
President Donald Trump has placed tariffs on dozens of countries, focusing particularly on top U.S. trading partners Canada, China, and Mexico. The tariffs and the White House messaging around them has sent the stock market into chaos at points over the past couple of months.
 While Canada and Mexico have negotiated with the Trump administration over immigration, drug trafficking, and other issues, Beijing has ratcheted up tensions with Washington. Talks between China and the United States have not yet started, though Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday that a date had been set for U.S. officials to meet with officials from Beijing.
“I was going to be in Switzerland to negotiate with the Swiss. Turns out, the Chinese team is traveling through Europe and they will be in Switzerland also. So, we will meet on Saturday and Sunday,” the treasury secretary <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/breakthrough-trump-officials-set-date-for-direct-trade-talks-with-china" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a>.
While tariff talk has spooked markets, Trump has pursued a business-friendly deregulatory agenda and promised an extension of his 2017 tax cuts.

Fed Makes Interest Rate Decision With Inflation Concerns As Backdrop

The first day of the conclave to elect the late Pope Francis’ successor closed without a decision.
The 133 cardinals sworn to secrecy to take part in the election gathered in the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday to begin the process to decide the next head of the Catholic Church. Francis’ death just over two weeks ago set the process of choosing his successor in motion.
Black smoke billowed from the Sistine Chapel on Wednesday night, signaling to a crowd of tens of thousands of onlookers that the conclave had closed its first day with no decision. The result was expected as the first vote has little chance of resulting in a pope.
For the next pope to be elected, he must receive a two-thirds vote from the cardinals in the conclave. The conclave is made up of Catholic cardinals under the age of 80. Bishop Robert Barron, founder of Word on Fire, said that the first vote, while inconclusive, is an important gauge for the cardinals to see who the viable candidates may be.
“For the first time they’re going to sense exactly who are the candidates,” said Barron, according to <a href="https://www.cnn.com/world/live-news/new-pope-conclave-day-one-05-07-25#cmae76xdt001g3b6p6z3wvvg5" target="_blank" rel="noopener">CNN</a>. “Maybe some people that we’ve all been talking about are not really going to get votes. And then they’ll see, ok, probably someone a little more left, someone a little more right. So, this vote will be an important one, almost certainly indecisive, but it will give a good indication of where the conclave is.”
The cardinals will reconvene in the Sistine Chapel on Thursday to resume voting. As many as four votes may be held that day. When a new pope is chosen, white smoke will rise from the chimney in the chapel, a message to the Catholic faithful that the conclave has been successful.

This conclave is the largest in history, according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/live/2025/05/07/world/pope-conclave-updates/heres-the-latest?smid=url-share" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>. Most of the 133 cardinals involved were handpicked by Francis.
In some sense, the election of the next pope may be a referendum on Francis’ papacy. The late pontiff was accused of making confusing statements and ignoring canon law.
“I think it was a very conflictual legacy,” Fr. Conclave Closes Day One With Key First Vote, No Pope Chosen

The Department of Education, led by Education Secretary Linda McMahon, has cut off funding for a grant that supported controversial children’s programming at PBS and elsewhere.
The Trump administration has slashed funding to NPR and PBS. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which supports NPR and PBS, announced in a <a href="https://cpb.org/pressroom/CPB-Statement-US-Department-Education-Terminating-Ready-Learn-Grant" target="_blank" rel="noopener">statement</a> on Tuesday that the federal government terminated the $23 million Ready To Learn program.
“Nearly every parent has raised their kids on public broadcasting’s children’s content. For the past 30 years, Ready To Learn-funded PBS KIDS content has produced measurable, real-world impacts on children’s learning,” said Patricia Harrison, the president and CEO of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. “We will work with Congress and the Administration to preserve funding for this essential program.”
Education spokeswoman Madi Biedermann said the Ready To Learn grant was being used to fund “racial justice educational programming,” according to <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/06/us/politics/doe-kills-grant-pbs-childrens-shows.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The New York Times</a>.
“The Trump Department of Education will prioritize funding that supports meaningful learning and improving student outcomes, not divisive ideologies and woke propaganda,” said Biedermann.
The grant’s termination came after President Donald Trump last week signed an executive order for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and other federal agencies to cut funding to NPR and PBS.
Ready To Learn funded productions such as the popular children’s show “Sesame Street,” which has been mired in controversy in recent years over programs related to Black Lives Matter, the LGBT movement, and other political agendas.
The official social media accounts of “Sesame Street” have endorsed gay and trans “pride” by sharing the Pride Progress flag.
“On our Street, we celebrate inclusion, belonging, and freedom of authentic self-expression. Happy #PrideMonth to all the people in our neighborhoods!” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sesame-street-dragged-on-twitter-for-sharing-progress-pride-flag" target="_blank" rel="noopener">said</a> one June 2023 post.
In 2022, the popular children’s show encouraged children to receive the COVID vaccine.

But you cite ZERO scientific evidence for this,” Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/ted-cruz-blasts-sesame-street-for-promoting-covid-vaccine-for-young-kids" target="_blank" rel="noopener">posted</a> at the time.
In June 2021, “Sesame Street” aired a “Family Day” episode that featured a gay couple, Dave and Frank, and their daughter, Mia. Alan Muraoka, who co-directed the episode, <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/love-is-love-says-director-of-sesame-street-family-day-episode-which-stars-married-gay-couple-and-their-daughter" target="_blank" rel="noopener">touted</a> it on Facebook with a message of “Love is love,” a slogan used to spurn traditional views on marriage and family.
In March of that year, “Sesame Street” <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/sesame-street-casts-black-muppets-to-teach-children-the-abcs-of-racial-literacy" target="_blank" rel="noopener">introduced</a> two black characters, a father and son named Elijah and Wesley Walker, to teach children about “racial literacy.”
PBS’s agenda-driven content has stretched beyond “Sesame Street.” The White House <a href="https://www.dailywire.com/news/white-house-publishes-list-of-grievances-trashing-pbs-npr-grift-that-has-ripped-us-off" target="_blank" rel="noopener">released</a> a list of grievances against PBS last month to justify slashing funding to the broadcaster.
